Fox, Margaret Elizabeth. "Formal Relationships in Clara Wieck's Piano Concerto Op. 7." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32002.

Abstract:
Clara Wieck Schumann’s 1836 Piano Concerto Op. 7 represents an era of radical formal experimentation in the early nineteenth century. As such, critics including Robert Schumann questioned its unity, thus prompting late twentieth-century scholars to reassess both its departures from tradition and its cohesive mechanisms. I propose that the concerto’s formal innovations are a result of Wieck’s decision to construct a tripartite work from her autonomous Concertsatz, which became the Finale after the addition of a first and second movement. This study uses William Caplin’s theory of formal functions and Steven Vande Moortele’s theory of two-dimensional sonata form to examine how Wieck complemented the independent Finale with a formally divergent first movement, which facilitates the projection of an overarching sonata form spanning the entire work. In doing so, this study produces a model to assess the concerto’s internal logic.

Abstract:
A search for new physics in events with two photons and missing transverse energy is performed. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.93 fb−1 in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are analyzed. No excess of events with large missing transverse energy is observed by comparing the data to the expected standard model processes. The results are interpreted within the general gauge-mediated supersymmetry model and through simplified model spectra. Upper limits on the signal production cross sections and exclusion regions at the 95% confidence level are set in the parameter space of the respective models.

Sanseviro, Michael Lenard. "Student Government Presidents' Perceptions of their Role in Institutional Decision-Making at a Two-Year Public College." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/eps_diss/7.

Abstract:
This qualitative study investigated the roles students play in institutional decision-making, and in particular how the students perceive both what their roles should be and what their roles actually are. Five Student Government Association (SGA) presidents, serving sequential one-year terms from 1999 to 2004 at one campus of a multi-campus two-year public college located in a large metropolitan area in the southeast, were interviewed. The qualitative research methodology employed thematic analysis to describe the students' perceptions in the context of both the letter and spirit of policy implementation regarding institutional decision-making. Through analysis of interviews, institutional documents, and documents at the statewide system level, this investigation explored a wide array of variables that affect the roles students play in institutional decision-making. Framed through a critical lens, this study argues that student involvement in institutional decision-making is necessary to engage students as active citizens capable of civil discourse that results in informed action for the benefit of the community in which the citizens are engaged, perpetuating a democratic society. However, this is not what the students perceived from their experiences in institutional decision-making. Based on the data, this study concludes that students play an advisory role at best, but more frequently are co-opted into serving the desired ends of the administration in a hegemonic fashion. This study offers both suggestions for praxis, and raises questions for further research, in an attempt to reconcile the tensions between the corporatization of higher education and the cultivation of democracy.

Abstract:

This dissertation describes the search for large extra dimensions. Such extra dimensions could solve the hierarchy problem, one of the greatest puzzles in the field of particle physics. The hierarchy problem is the mystery of why gravity is significantly weaker than the electromagnetic, strong, and weak forces. A solution would unify the strength of gravity with the strength of the other forces. There are many possible tests for extra dimensions. Presented is the analysis of proton-proton collisions with final states in which a single photon recoils from an invisible particle. These data were collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector during the 2011 Large Hadron Collider run at CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV.

Backgrounds are estimated using data driven techniques for those due to W → νe, hadronic jets, and non-collision backgrounds such as beam remnants faking a photon, and anomalous energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The less significant backgrounds are estimated using Monte Carlo simulation, Wγ, dijet, and jet + γ. The irreducible Z(νν)+ γ background was estimated in Monte Carlo for the extra dimension search, but in later studies this component should be estimated by using a ratio of the measured Zγ → μμγ cross section.

The results are consistent with the predicted Standard Model cross section of Z bosons decaying to neutrino pairs. Subsequently, the worlds best limits are placed on the monophoton topology of large extra dimensions. The same analysis provides a measurement of the Z(νν)+γ cross section consistent with next to leading order predictions.

Abstract:
A data sample with integrated luminosity 7.1 inverse microbarns of pp collisions was collected with a minimum bias trigger at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. It is analysed to identify large pseudorapidity gaps. The inelastic cross section is presented differentially in Delta eta F, the largest continuous region of pseudorapidity which extends from the edge of the detector at eta= plus or minus 4.9 and which contains no final state particles above a threshold pT cut. The measurement is presented in the region 0 < Delta eta F < 8 for 200 < pT cut< 800 MeV. Diffractive topologies are isolated at large gap sizes. The distribution is interpreted using triple Regge models of diffractive scattering, and the dependence of the inelastic cross section on the kinematics of diffraction is studied and compared with other LHC measurements.

Abstract:
A measurement using the ATLAS detector has been made of the fraction of events in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV that do not contain additional jets in the rapidity region bounded by a di-jet system. This provided a strong test of perturbative QCD in the new energy regime of the Large Hadron Collider. Additional measurements have been made of the mean jet multiplicity in the rapidity bounded region and using a variety of different event selections. These observation were compared to recent next to leading order dijet predictions produced by POWHEG and a variety of leading order generators.

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis developed techniques with context-awareness support, based on the MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 standards, in order to personalize and to adapt Interactive TV content. One of the challenges in this area is the development of personalized programs with rich multimedia content, high interactivity and accessibility through a variety of devices (mobile and non-mobile). Most part of the problem is that the approaches found in literature do not provide context support, do not allow separation between programs and objects descriptions and have low level of segmentation granularity. These features make difficult or impossible, in some cases, the development of Interactive TV applications. The techniques developed in this work are based on MPEG-7 compliant schemes and on programs segmentation into MPEG-4 objects. The schemes are used to describe structure, composition and semantics of programs and component objects. An infra-structure to creation, delivery and consumption of Interactive TV programs was also defined. The joint utilization of infra-structure and techniques allows for the development of Interactive TV advanced applications. As an example of these applications, this work developed an automatic Interactive TV personalization and adaptation service. This service allows a user to access, on-demand, a program specially designed to match his interests and allowing content access through devices with mobile and non-mobile features.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider a two-level supply chain involving a manufacturer and a retailer who serves as the quality gatekeeper. The manufacturer determines a wholesale price and a defective rate and announces his decisions to the retailer, who then makes her decisions on the retail price and identification rate that means the percent- age of the defects identified by the retailer and reflects the retailer’s gatekeeping effort on her quality assurance. We accordingly develop a leader-follower game and solve it to find Stackelberg equilibrium for the manufacturer and the retailer. In order to examine whether or not the supply chain benefits from the retailer's quality gatekeeping effort, we also develop and solve another leader-follower game where the manufacturer still announces its wholesale pricing and defective rate decisions but the retailer only decides on the retail price. We show that the manufacturer’s equilibrium defective rate for the game with the retailers gate-keeping is higher than that for the game without the retailer’s gatekeeping. The ratio of the manufacturers profit to the retailer’s profit is increased when the retailer serves as the gatekeeper. Moreover, the retailer reduces her price when she acts as the gatekeeper, if and only if the supply chain-wide cost decreases as a result of the retailer’s gatekeeping effort. We also perform sensitivity analysis of each parameter in our game models to further examine the impacts of the retailer’s gatekeeping on the manufacturer’s and the retailer’s decisions and profits. We find that the retailer’s penalty cost per defect has more significant impacts than the manufacturer’s unit penalty cost. The paper ends with a summary of managerial insights.

Abstract:
Caspase-7 is a member of a family of cysteine proteases that includes apoptotic initiators (caspases-8, -9 and -10) and executors (caspases-3, -6 and -7). During apoptosis, executioner caspases are cleaved by initiator caspases either by the extrinsic (death receptors) or by the intrinsic (mitochondrial) pathway of caspase activation. Caspase-7 is an obligate dimer in the cell and cleavage of the interdomain connector (IDC), which split the catalytic domain in two subunits, at either site 1 or site 2 allows the conversion of the enzyme from the zymogen (inactive) state to the active state through a conformation switch that leads to the creation of a substrate binding pocket and the catalytic site. During caspase-7 activation, a 23-residue N-terminal peptide is also cleaved. Consequently, caspase-7 displays different N-terminal residues from those of its zymogen. This can change the stability of caspase-7 according to the N-end rule, which relates the half-life of a protein with the residue presented at its N-terminus. This degradation pathway controls the ubiquitination of the protein based on the N-terminus. To replicate the different forms of caspase-7 produced during its activation process in a controlled manner, a TEV protease cleavage site [ENLYFQ[arrow down](S/A)] was strategically inserted to mimic the different possibilities of IDC cleavage: 1) cleavage at site 1 only, 2) cleavage at site 2 only, or 3) a double cleavage. This was done in order to obtain the N-terminal residues normally presented during the cleavage of caspase-7. These constructions have been also optimized to preserve the proteolytic activity of the enzyme with as little change as possible to the length of the IDC. These constructs were cleaved by TEV protease in vitro and in cellulo and allowed the activation of apoptosis. Furthermore, the cellular half-life of caspase-7 seems to be changed by its cleavage. In conclusion, we have developed an interesting tool for the study of caspase-7.

Full text
Abstract:
A data sample of pp collisions with an integrated luminosity of 6.75 nb\(^{-1}\) was collected using a combination of a minimum bias trigger and a single jet trigger at √s = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. It is analysed to study diffractive dijet production, i.e. events with a hadronic system containing at least two jets in addition to a large region of pseudorapidity devoid of hadronic activity. The cross section is presented differentially with respect to Δη\(^F\), the largest continuous region of pseudorapidity which extends from the edge of the detector at η = ±4.9 and contains no final state particles above threshold momentum cuts, over the region 0 < Δη\(^F\) < 6.5. It is also presented differentially in the variable ξ\(^±\), which estimates the fractional momentum loss of the proton in single diffractive dissociation (pp → pX) events. Comparing the data distributions with a Monte Carlo model suggest that fluctuations in the hadronisation process allow non-diffractive dijets to look like diffractive events, but that the data cannot be described solely by non-diffractive dijet production. In addition, the monitoring of the electromagnetic and jet efficiencies for the ATLAS Level-1 Calorimeter Trigger is described.

Abstract:
For the first time, the Z0 boson angular distribution in the center-of-momentum frame is measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(S) = 7 TeV at the CERN LHC. The data sample, recorded with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 36 pb-1. Events in which there is a Z0 and at least one jet, with a jet transverse momentum threshold of 20 GeV and absolute jet rapidity less than 2.4, are selected for the analysis. Only the Z0’s muon decay channel is studied. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the measured angular distribution is in agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions.

Abstract:
The top quark has been extensively studied since the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) began operating in 2010. The excellent performance of both the LHC and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector has enabled complex analyses of many properties of the top quark. In this thesis inclusive and differential top pair (tt) production cross sections have been measured. Inclusive tt cross sections of 145.6 ± 8.2 (stat.) +38.1/28.3 (syst.) pb and 237.4 ± 1.9 (stat.) +20.4/-16.9 (syst.) pb were measured at 7 TeV and 8 TeV center-of-mass collision energies using luminosities of 1 fb⁻¹ and 19.7 fb⁻¹, respectively. These measurements were performed in the semi-leptonic channel by means of a maximum likelihood t of the lepton's pseudorapidity. The work in this thesis focuses specifically on the muon-plus-jets channel. The methods used for measuring the inclusive cross sections were built upon to measure differential cross sections with respect to event level observables. These observables include the missing transverse energy (Emiss T ) as well as some other kinematic distributions involving the jets, lepton and Emiss T in the decay. These results are unfolded to remove detector and selection effects and have uncertainties in the range of 3% to 15%. A low uncertainty is achieved by normalising the differential cross section using the total cross section. This leads to cancellations of some uncertainties. The results were compared with different Monte Carlo generators and with different input parameters. No significant deviations from predictions of the Standard Model were observed. This thesis also contains test beam results on CMS ECAL Endcap Lead Tungstate (PbWO4) crystals. These crystals had been damaged using various doses of proton irradiation. The damage for some crystals is expected to be roughly equivalent to 300 fb-1 of integrated luminosity at √s = 14 TeV. The energy resolution for these crystals was seen to reduce by close to a factor of 20.

Abstract:
Short lived resonances can be used as a useful probe into the fundamental interactions that occur within the collisions of particles at high energy, as conducted in high energy experiments, such as the ones performed at the A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The environments studied range from the broad hadronic interactions created within the collisions of protons at unexplored centre-of-mass energies, to an entirely different form of hadronic matter created in the hot and dense region resulting from colliding heavy ions at high energy. However, due to the short lifetimes of resonances, they cannot be measured directly and instead must be studied using the products they decay into. The analysis conducted focuses on the extraction of a number of resonances seen in the π\(^+\) π\(^-\) channel; the invariant mass spectrum created contains many components which need to be accounted for within the extraction process, which also requires numerous corrections applied to it in order to accurately measure the desired peaks.

Abstract:
The study of the angular distribution of photon plus jet events in pp collisions at √S =7 TeV with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is presented. The photon is restricted to the central region of the detector (|η| < 1.4442) while the jet is allowed to be present in both central and forward regions of CMS |η| < 2.4). Dominant backgrounds due to jets fragmenting into neutral mesons are accounted for through the use of a template method that discriminates between signal and background. The angular distribution, |η*|, is defined as the absolute value of the difference in η between the leading photon and leading jet in an event divided by two. The angular distribution ranging from 0-1.4 was examined and compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions and was found to be in good agreement.

The search is based on the semi-leptonic tt channel searching for the process t → H⁺b where H⁺ → cs⁻. The invariant mass distribution of the dijet system consistent with the hadronic decay of a W⁺ is used to search for a secondary bump from hadronic H⁺ decays. With no observation of the charged Higgs signal, 95% confidence level upper limits on the decay branching ratio of top quarks to charged Higgs bosons are set as a function of the charged Higgs boson mass.

The data used corresponds to 4.6 fb−1 of integrated luminosity taken during 2011 at the LHC at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV. The spin correlation is studied utilising different observables with different sensitivities to the production mechanism, in particular to gluon-gluon fusion in the like or unlike helicity state, quark anti- quark annihilation in the unlike helicity state, or a combination of the three. In addition cuts are made on the invariant mass of the ttbar system to enhance or suppress contributions from different initial state production mechanisms. The analysis presented is a precision test of both ttbar production and decay in the SM. These measurements are compared to the most current theoretical predictions. No deviation from the SM expectation was observed. In a subset of the data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb−1, the hypothesis of zero spin correlation is excluded at 5.1 standard deviations.

A measurement of the W+ and W− cross section in the electron channel is presented. The measurement is performed using data collected with the ATLAS experiment in 2011, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 4.58 fb−1. The centre of mass energy is √s = 7 TeV. The measurement is performed differentially in the electron pseudorapidity. The W charge asymmetry is also presented. The results are compared to theoretical predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD using various Parton Distribution Functions.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis had as its aim the asymmetric synthesis of tetrathia[7]helicene derivatives using a newly developed multiple kinetic resolution (multi-KR) approach. The derivatives obtained (formyl- and diformylhelicene) should also be useful intermediates for the synthesis of chiral push-pull systems. The first part of the project was devoted to the synthesis of 7,8-dipropyltetrathia[7]helicene reported by Licandro and Maiorana. A key intermediate in this synthesis is the benzo[1,2- b:4,3-b']thiophene building block, previously obtained via a photochemical reaction, and for which we developed an alternative chemical synthesis1. The second part of the project focused on the kinetic resolution, designed to obtain formyland diformylhelicene. Two strategies were identified to obtain the desired aldehydes: direct asymmetric formylation using novel chiral formamide reagents and/or asymmetric lithiation using (–)-sparteine followed by a DMF quench. The chiral auxiliaries were first examined in single kinetic resolution experiments in order to identify the most suitable conditions and auxiliaries. Asymmetric lithiation proceeded in up to 84% e.e. and the asymmetric formylation using a chiral formamide gave at best 42% e.e. The most successful examples were chosen to design several multi-KR approaches using a suitable combination of matched and/or mismatched steps. These strategies have allowed us to synthesise very highly enantioenriched helicene derivatives that can be recrystallized to enantiopurity. Finally, the synthesis of (electron donor)-(chiral-)-(electron acceptor) [D-(chiral-)-A] and (electron acceptor)-(chiral-)-(electron acceptor) [A-(chiral-)-A] chiral push-pull systems was examined. Racemic A-(chiral-)-A structures were readily obtained, and although one racemic D-(chiral-)-A target was synthesised; the synthesis of this latter class of compound has proved to be more challenging because of issues with the stability of the synthetic intermediates. Both D-(chiral-)-A and A-(chiral-)-A structures are to be examined in photophysics experiments by Pr. T. Verbiest at the University of Leuven.

Abstract:
Fruit rot caused by Aspergillus niger and Colletotrichum sp. could cause rapid and severe damage on orange fruits. Current control method of orange fruits is mainly applied by usage of harmful pesticides, leading to chemical residues on fruits, environmental pollution and human poisoning. One of alternative methods of reducing pesticides is to use botanical extracts. This study was conducted to evaluate the in vivo antifungal efficacy of aqueous extracts from the leaves of neem and basket plants against A. niger and Colletotrichum sp. Orange fruits artificially inoculated by fruit rot pathogens were immersed into leaf extracts of 6% (w/v) neem or basket plants for 30 s, and kept for 11 days to record lesion length at room temperature. Orange fruits immersed into sterile distilled water were used as the control treatment. The results showed that at 11 days after inoculation, extracts of neem and basket plants significantly reduced the Aspergillus rot lesions by 109.08 and 124.00 mm, respectively. In addition, anthracnose lesions on orange fruits were statistically inhibited by treatments of neem and basket plants, with the average lesion diameters approximately 160.00 and 154.75 mm, respectively, at day 11 of the conducting experiment. The results of this study showed that leaf extracts of neem and basket plant at the concentration of 6% could be used as a natural alternative to control the in vivo growth of rot pathogens of orange fruits. These extracts have a bright future in modern plant protection to replace conventional synthetic pesticides in agro-ecosystem.

Abstract:
The measurement of missing transverse momentum in the ATLAS detector, described in this paper, makes use of the full event reconstruction and a calibration based on reconstructed physics objects. The performance of the missing transverse momentum reconstruction is evaluated using data collected in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in 2010. Minimum bias events and events with jets of hadrons are used from data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 0.3 nb(-1) and 600 nb(-1) respectively, together with events containing a Z boson decaying to two leptons (electrons or muons) or a W boson decaying to a lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino, from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 36 pb(-1). An estimate of the systematic uncertainty on the missing transverse momentum scale is presented.

Abstract:
Pseudorapidity gap distributions in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV are studied using a minimum bias data sample with an integrated luminosity of 7.1 mu b(-1). Cross sections are measured differentially in terms of Delta eta(F), the larger of the pseudorapidity regions extending to the limits of the ATLAS sensitivity, at eta = +/- 4.9, in which no final state particles are produced above a transverse momentum threshold p(T)(cut). The measurements span the region 0 < Delta eta(F) < 8 for 200 MeV < p(T)(cut) < 800 MeV. At small Delta eta(F), the data test the reliability of hadronisation models in describing rapidity and transverse momentum fluctuations in final state particle production. The measurements at larger gap sizes are dominated by contributions from the single diffractive dissociation process (pp -> Xp), enhanced by double dissociation (pp -> XY) where the invariant mass of the lighter of the two dissociation systems satisfies M-Y less than or similar to 7 GeV. The resulting cross section is ds sigma/d Delta eta(F) approximate to 1 mb for Delta eta(F) greater than or similar to 3. The large rapidity gap data are used to constrain the value of the Pomeron intercept appropriate to triple Regge models of soft diffraction. The cross section integrated over all gap sizes is compared with other LHC inelastic cross section measurements.

Abstract:
New metastable massive particles with electric and colour charge are features of many theories beyond the Standard Model. A search is performed for long-lived gluino-based R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31 pb(-1). We search for evidence of particles that have come to rest in the ATLAS detector and decay at some later time during the periods in the LHC bunch structure without proton-proton collisions. No significant deviations from the expected backgrounds are observed, and a cross-section limit is set. It can be interpreted as excluding gluino-based R-hadrons with masses less than 341 GeV at the 95 % C.L., for lifetimes from 10(-5) to 10(3) seconds and a neutralino mass of 100 GeV.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the diphoton invariant mass distribution mγγ is measured using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011. The inte- grated luminosity collected suitable for data analysis during this time was L = 4.9 fb^−1 ± 1.3%. The properties of the mγγ distribution are studied by observing the data in a control region 140 GeV < mγγ < 400 GeV. A statistical procedure is used to search the mγγ distribution for the presence of a statistically significant excess of events in a generalised manner. The p-value for this search is 0.734 ± 0.004, which is consistent with the null hypothesis. The 95% Bayesian limit on the cross-section times branching ratio of the Randall Sun- drum graviton decaying to diphotons σ × Br G → γγ in the data, along with the expected limit, is determined as a function of mass with a coupling param- eter of k/Mpl = 0.1. The exclusion limits are recast to other values of k/Mpl by scaling the cross-section limit according to its theoretical dependence of the cross-section on k/Mpl . The parameters of the Randall Sundrum model are bounded by the analysis with approximately mG > 1 TeV for k/Mpl = 0.01 and mG > 2 TeV for k/Mpl = 0.1.

Abstract:

In this thesis, we perform the measurement of the production of W and Z bosons in proton-proton collisions at [the square root of]s = 7 TeV with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the LHC, W and Z bosons are produced at a high rate, providing for large yields, which along with the clean signature of W boson decay into a muon and neutrino and the Z boson decay into two muons, allow for precision measurement of their production within the first year of operation. Deviation of these values from standard model predictions gives a clear indication of new physics interactions occurring at the LHC. We present the measurement of the inclusive W--> [mu] [epsilon] and Z --> [mu]+ [mu]- cross sections along with the W boson charge ratio (W+/W-) and the W/Z production ratio in the muon channel using the first data corresponding to 35.9 pb-1 of proton proton collisions at [the square root of]s = 7 TeV. Measured values of ... are in agreement with the most advanced NNLO predictions. These are currently the most precise Electroweak measurements at the LHC.

CMS is one of the main detectors installed in the LHC that is able to study different physical aspects, from the Standard Model to dark matter search. This general purpose detector was constructed to measure muon properties with high precision and all subdetectors were built with high granularity making possible to identify and characterize the kinematic properties of all final stable particles. The event reconstruction algorithm includes the jet identification, in other words, it is possible to identify the signature of parton production in the collision. The measurement of the cross sections of multijet production is one of the methods to explore perturbative QCD contributions, allowing the evaluation of the predictions implemented in the event simulation. Focusing on the characterization of the QCD related process in proton-proton collision at √s = 7 TeV , the measurement of the inclusive multijet production in CMS is presented. The measurement is done using real data with low pileup events collected in 2010 with integrated luminosity of L = 2,869 pb-1 and using jets in almost all pseudo-rapidity accessible range |n| < 4,8 and low transverse momentum pT > 30 GeV/c2. The detector effects in the measurement was removed, called unfolding procedure, and compared with Monte Carlo predictions.

Abstract:
Prompt photons are produced primarily by quark-gluon compton scattering and quark-anti-quark annihilation mechanisms that their measurements are driven by several motivations at hadron colliders. Measurement of prompt photons can be used for probing perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Prompt photons are produced in the final states of important decays providing evidence for low mass Higgs boson and new physics searches. Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the multi-purpose experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to study the Standard Model (SM) physics including prompt photons and new theories in proton-proton collisions. In this thesis, photon reconstruction is discussed along with the photon identification methods in the CMS experiment. Photon efficiency measurements are presented as an important ingredient for photon+jet cross section measurement. Photon High Level Trigger (HLT) efficiencies, reconstruction (RECO) efficiencies, and identification (ID) efficiencies are presented that are measured from collision data recorded by the CMS detector and Monte Carlo simulation data. Efficiency corrected differential photon+jet cross section measurement results are presented in this study. Abstract:
Measurements are presented of differential cross-sections for top quark pair production in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV relative to the total inclusive top quark pair production cross-section. A data sample of 2.05 fb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used. Relative differential cross-sections are derived as a function of the invariant mass, the transverse momentum and the rapidity of the top quark pair system. Events are selected in the lepton (electron or muon) + jets channel. The background-subtracted differential distributions are corrected for detector effects, normalized to the total inclusive top quark pair production cross-section and compared to theoretical predictions. The measurement uncertainties range typically between 10 % and 20 % and are generally dominated by systematic effects. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectations are observed.
