Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted to analyze impacts of weeds on biomass of two varieties of rain fed upland paddy (cv. Radha-4 and Neemai) during the Kharif session of 2004-2005 in the Terai region of Nepal. Four experiments were conducted in randomized block design with three replications. A total of 55 weed species were identified with densities of 240 individual plants per sqm in Radha-4 and 236 individual plants per sqm in Neemai. The annual net primary productivity of paddy crop was maximum (2329.3 g m-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 2170.3 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in weed-free plots and lowest (1659.8 g m-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 1659.4 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in unweeded plots. Hand weeding was done twice at 25 and 50 days after broadcasting and proved to be better than herbicides in the paddy biomass. The mean maximum biomass of paddy in weed free plots was 2418.7 and 2270.3 g m-2 in Radha-4 and Neemai. This biomass was similar to twice hand weeded plots being 1% lower in both the varieties. Compared to weed-free plots the biomass reduction in Radha-4 and Neemai in herbicides treated plots was lower by 1.4% in both the varieties. Compared to weed-free plots the biomass reduction in unweeded plots was recorded 29% lower in Radha-4 and 23% in Neemai. The weed biomass was highest in unweed plots (516.4 and 436.6 g m-2) and lowest (169.3 and 192.3g m-2 in twice hand-weeded plots. The net annual primary productivity of weeds was highest (437.9 g m>-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 376.6 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in unweeded plots and lowest (119.7 g m-2 yr-1 in Radha-4 and 145.5 g m-2 yr-1 in Neemai) in twice hand weeded plots. The trend of grain yield in both the varieties were; weed-free plots (TT) > twice hand-weeded plots (T1) > chemical fertilizer and butachlor plots (T2) > unweeded plots (To).Key words: Paddy; weeds; upland; biomass; Teraidoi: 10.3126/eco.v13i0.1623 Ecoprint (An International Journal of Ecology) Vol. 13, No. 1, 2006 Page 15-22

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough various studies have shown that robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (RATHA) is associated with improved component positioning to plan and reduced intraoperative complications, there is still a learning curve for implementation even for experienced surgeons. This study assessed this learning curve for fellows during their training year, by comparing the accuracy and precision of acetabular component positioning, leg length, component offset, and center of rotation between manual THA (MTHA) and RATHA. Six fresh-frozen lower extremity specimens were utilized for surgical procedures performed by two adult reconstruction fellows who were halfway through their training year. The specimens were randomized to undergo one side with manual instrumentation and the contralateral side with RATHA. The final intraoperative surgical plan for rotation, cup orientation, leg length, and offset values were recorded and compared with the actual values measured by computed tomography (CT) scan. Using pre- and postoperative CT scans, the RATHA group was then compared with the MTHA group for accuracy and precision to plan. To assess differences in standard deviations of each measurement, 2-variances testing was performed using α = 0.05. To assess differences in central tendencies of each measurement for each group, Mann–Whitney U tests were performed using α = 0.05. RATHA exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) greater accuracy and precision to plan compared with MTHA in shell version (2.3 ± 1.2° vs. 7.8 ± 4.6°), shell inclination (2.1 ± 1.2° vs. 7.2 ± 3.2), and leg length discrepancy (0.8 ± 0.8 mm vs. 6.4 ± 3.7 mm). Center of head rotation was reported for each anatomical plane. There was no statistical difference in distance from original center of head rotation when considering the superoinferior, mediolateral, and anteroposterior planes as well as when combined as a total deviation in all three planes. The use of CT-guided preoperative planning and intraoperative robotic technology can help surgeons achieve desired implant placement. Results from this study indicate that with limited RATHA experience, surgeons in fellowship training were able to place THA components more accurately and precisely to plan for several important parameters compared with MTHA, namely shell inclination, shell anteversion, and leg length discrepancy.

Abstract:
Female writers have always been vocal against the tyranny of the overwhelming demon of patriarchy. Some of the writings of contemporary Bangladeshi female writers like Selina Hossain and Purabi Basu, exhibit a strong sense of resistance to the overpowering hegemony of paterfamilias. The aim of this paper is to focus on the tendency of de-centering the masculine logocentricism as shown in two of the short stories of Purabi Basu, “Radha Will Not Cook Today” and “Saleha’s Desire”. In these texts, we will find two resistant female protagonists, Radha and Saleha, who stand in their own way against societal expectations and break away with the roles the society has imposed on them. Their weapons are either silence or indifference or even violence. Moreover, their resistance may not lead to any positive conclusion. Yet, they are to be celebrated because of their power to oppose the oppressive or suppressive power. Stamford Journal of English; Volume 6; Page 177-185 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/sje.v6i0.13912

Abstract:
Ozyptila balkarica Ovtsharenko, 1979, belonging to the Holarctic Ozyptila rauda-group was thought to be a junior synonym of O. orientalis Kulczyński, 1926, because of its indistinguishable females. Comparison of topotype males from Caucasus and Kamchatka revealed clear differences in the shape of copulatory organs and carapace patterns; thus the junior name is revalidated here. Because the differences between the two taxa are of the same level as between O. orientalis and O. basegica Esyunin, 1992, which is considered a subspecies of the former species, subspecific rank to O. orientalis balkarica stat. nov. is suggested. Males of the two subspecies are illustrated, and a synopsis of the whole O. rauda-group accounting 14 species and subspecies is given. O. sedotmikha Levy, 2007, from Israel was found to belong to this group. Distribution of all species is mapped.

Abstract:
Ozyptila utotchikini Marusik in Marusik and Chevrizov (1990) was described from two male specimens from the Anuchino District of Maritime Province, Far East Russia. Since then it has also been reported from Sikhote-Alin’ Reserve (Marusik & Koponen 2001). Ozyptila utotchkini belongs to the Holarctic O. rauda-group which comprises about 10 species. The examination of both, newly collected material and specimens from museum collections from Maritime Province has uncovered the undescribed female of this species. Although collected previously, it was not known to be conspecific to the male of O. utotchkini, or a member of the O. rauda-group, as it has an unusual epigyne. Recently we recognized that O. utotchkini may represent a junior synonym of O. gasanensis Paik, 1985, known only from female holotype collected in Korea. The holotype of this species is not available (all types deposited in the private collection of K.Y. Paik were lost after his death). The goal of this paper is to describe both sexes of O. utotchkini to allow clarification of the status of the two Far Eastern species, O. gasanensis and O. utotchkini, in the future.

Abstract:
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a species of crops which is highly sensitive to drought. The sensitivity to water stress varies from genotypes to genotypes of rice. An experiment was performed to compare twenty-five different rice genotypes for drought tolerance in the seedling stage at Gokuleshwor Agriculture and Animal Science College, Baitadi Nepal from July to August 2018. The genotypes were tested under two conditions viz., water stress and non-water stress. The research work was carried out in a completely random design (CRD) with three replications. The results exhibited the height of seedling, length & breadth of leaf, number of leaves/plant decreased, and number of leaves shedding increased under water stress condition. Clustering was done by the method of average linkage, and genotypes were categorized into five clusters. The genotype, namely Radha 11 grouped in Cluster-V had higher plant height, bigger length & breadth of leaf, maximum number of leaves/plant and minimum number of leaf shedding. Thus, this genotype showed the best performance for morphological traits under water stress condition. Therefore, this genotype Radha 11 can be utilized further for developing rice variety with drought-tolerance.

AbstractFor Glaciar Santa Rosa, in the Cordillera Raura, Peru, the extent and volume are determined for 1980 and 1961 from topographic mapping, and for two undated earlier stages LME and MAX from moraines. The regime of the glacier in terms of ice flow and mass balance is evaluated for the 1977–83 period. More than half of the water discharge from the glacier is not renewed by precipitation but supplied by the ice thinning. The rate of surface lowering of 2 m a−1liquid-water equivalent corresponds to an energy amount for melting of 22 W m−2. Sensitivity analyses of Glaciar Yanamarey in the nearby Cordillera Blanca show that such a decrease of energy available for melting could be produced by a cloudiness increase of one-tenth, an air temperature decrease of more than 2°C, a decrease in specific humidity of 1 g kg−1, or some combination of heat-budget processes. Such changes in the atmospheric environment would be required to stabilize the glacier at its recent volume. As another indication of the recent imbalance, the maximum volume flux is found about 100 m below the equilibrium-line altitude. Under continuation of recent climatic conditions, the glacier may disappear within a few decades. These inferences coorroborate a recent assessment for the neighboring Cordillera Blanca.

A field experiment was conducted at Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project (Zone office), Bijuwar, Pyuthan from 18th April, 2017 to 12nd September, 2017 to evaluate the efficacy of Trichoderma viride in the management of leaf blast diseases of rainy season rice under field conditions. The experiment was laid out in two factors factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with five replications. The treatment consisted of two varieties of rice of which one is improved and resistant to blast disease (Sabitri) and another is local (Radha 7) and two rates of Trichoderma viride (5 ml/lit. and 0 ml/lit.). The leaf blast disease was scored three times using the disease rating scale 0-9 given by IRRI, 2002 from 75 DAT to 85 DAT at 5 days interval. The disease incidence, severity and AUDPC value were calculated and analyzed by using RSTAT. The variety factor and Trichoderma viride factor varied significantly for leaf blast incidence, severity and AUDPC, however, the interaction of variety and Trichoderma viride factor varied significantly only in AUDPC value. Disease incidence, severity and AUDPC were found least in Sabitri in comparison to Radha 7. T. viride had significant role in reducing the disease incidence, severity and AUDPC value. The interaction of Sabitri and Trichoderma viride treatment was found best with the mean AUDPC value being the least 3.228. So, the application of Trichoderma viride was found efficient for leaf blast management and it is more effective when applied along with an improved and resistant variety.

Abstract:
AbstractRecent studies of Asian religious traditions have critiqued Western philosophical understandings of mind–body dualism and furthered the productive notion of mind–body continuum. Based on intensive fieldwork among two kinds of devotional groups of Bengal—claimants to an orthodox Vaishnavism, who focus on participating in the erotic sports of the Hindu deity-consort Radha-Krishna in imagination and a quasi-tantric group, which claims to physically apprehend Radha-Krishna's erotic pleasures through direct sexual experience—I demonstrate that, although these devotional groups stress on combating theologies, with emphases respectively on the ‘mind’ and the ‘body’, in their narrations of religious experiences, however, both groups allude to rarefied phenomenological states of cognition and embodiment. So, while influenced by ideas of (mental) ‘purity’ and (bodily) ‘actuality’, respectively, practices of both groups rely on similar states of mind–body continuum. So I argue that the mind–body complex has intensely nuanced articulations in the discursive and experiential domains of these non-Western religious contexts. Through my analyses of the texts and embodiments of these opposed devotional groups, I show that theology gets both organically entangled with as well as challenged by phenomenological experiences. I further argue that explorations in the tenor of religious studies sharply enrich the anthropology of religiosities. Also, such engagements between theology and anthropology have been relatively lacking and need more emphasis in studies of contemporary South Asian religions.

ABSTRACT This study has aimed to carry out a phytosociological survey of weeds in different collection periods, in cassava crops of two varieties grown in two consecutive years. The varieties were Pão, of the sweet class, and Racha-terra, of the bitter class. The weeds surveys were performed at 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, 168, 196, 224, 252, 280 and 308 days after planting in the experimental units of each variety. For weeds sampling, a sampler with an area of 0.25 m2 released twice at random in the floor area of the treatments was used. The phytosociological survey quantified 5,708 individuals distributed in 17 families, represented by 32 species, of which 25 were dicotyledonous and seven were monocotyledonous. The most representative families in number of species were Euphorbiaceae and Poaceae, followed by Cyperaceae and Fabaceae. The most important species in the two growing seasons were Axonopus affinis, Mimosa pudica, Spermacoce verticillata and Paspalum multicaule. Other important species of the Poaceae family were Axonopus affinis, Axonopus fissifolius and Homolepis aturensis.

In this collection of nine essays, the authors grapple with the difficult question of whether the courts have done more harm or good to women's causes. The result is an interesting, at times challenging, and sometimes puzzling set of reflections on the future of women's legal strategies in Canada.

Abstract:
AbstractThe current study presents a fully qualitative palynological investigation carried out on the Raha Formation encountered from three wells in the Bakr Oil Field of the Gulf of Suez, Egypt. Around 30 species of pteridophytic spores, 26 species of angiosperm pollen, 24 species of gymnosperm pollen and 27 species of dinoflagellate cysts have been recorded. However, achritarchs, microforaminiferal test linings and freshwater algae are impoverished and sparsely documented throughout the Raha Formation. Two palynozones have been identified based on some stratigraphically significant pollen and spores, arranged from youngest to oldest: (1) Palynozone I (Classopollis brasiliensis–Tricolpites sagax Assemblage Zone) of late Cenomanian age; (2) Palynozone II (Afropollis jardinus–Crybelosporites pannuceus Assemblage Zone) of early-middle Cenomanian age. The distribution and ecological affiliation of specific palynomorph species, as well as various palynofacies parameters, are interpreted. A shallow marine environment from supratidal to distal inner neritic under proximal suboxic–anoxic to dysoxic–anoxic shelf conditions is reconstructed. Palaeobiogeographically, the absence of elaters from the recovered taxa is interpreted in terms of minor floral variation. This may be attributed to climatic and/or an environment-controlled niche establishment, which possibly was shaped by the existence of a physical barrier hindering the distribution of such type of elaterate parent plants.

Abstract:
Various lane-changing models have been developed for use within microscopic traffic simulation software to replicate driver merging behavior. An understanding of human driving behavior, which can be gained through such modeling, will be critical in harmonizing emerging advanced vehicle technology, such as connected automated vehicles, with human drivers. Therefore, it is important to ensure that lane-changing models are clearly understood, appropriately designed, and carefully calibrated. An earlier study by Kang and Rakha proposed and developed a decision-making model for merging maneuvers using a game theoretical approach considering two drivers: the driver of the subject vehicle (DS) in an acceleration lane and the driver of the following lag vehicle (DL) in the target lane. The previous model assumed that the DS and DL decide on an action at the first point only, where the subject and lag vehicles are identified. The current study extends the Kang and Rakha model by introducing the concept of a repeated game, assuming that a lane change decision is made repeatedly to adjust to changes in surrounding conditions. For example, drivers often decide to change their initial decision as a result of conflicts with other drivers. A repeated game helps the proposed model produce more realistic decision-making in the lane-changing process. To evaluate the model, driver decisions at a certain stage, along with accumulated historical decision data, were extracted from Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) data. The validation results reveal that the proposed repeated game model produces considerable prediction accuracy (above 75%).

Abstract:
The first part of this article seeks to discuss the development of Islamic architectural calligraphy in Sultanate Bengal in the context of its cultural history. Most early Islamic monuments of the region had some kind of calligraphic embellishment since in Islamic culture inscriptions are considered a powerful medium for conveying visual, cultural and spiritual messages. These inscriptions were rendered in various styles: Ku¯fi¯, thulth, naskh, riqa¯‘, rayha¯ni¯, muhaqqaq, tughra¯‘ and Biha¯ri¯. The second part focuses on some hitherto unpublished inscriptions discovered by the author in Gaur and Pandua, two early capitals of the Sultans of Bengal. Special attention is paid to deciphering and editing these new epigraphic texts, and to the analysis of information derived from them in their historical context, such as the names of the contemporary rulers, local administrative officers, religious figures, military commanders and their titles. These findings help us understand the contemporary political, administrative, social, religious and cultural implications for the region.

The Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis W.G. Jones, K.D. Hill & J.M. Allen) is shown to possess a unique architecture. The model is notdescribed by any of the 23 basic models previously described (Bell 1991), butcan be described by a modified Cook model whereby growth is rhythmic ratherthan continuous. This differs from all other extant members of Araucariaceae, which conform to the models of either Rauh or Massart. The branching andcoppicing habits can both be interpreted as adaptive reiterations. Both thearchitectural model and the two types of adaptive reiteration are advanced orautapomorphic conditions in the Wollemi pine.

A new species of Paramongaia, P. multiflora, and of Rauhia, R. albescens, are described from Peru. We also present an updated parsimony analysis of aligned ITS sequences across the tetraploid Andean clade of Amaryllidaceae subfam. Amaryllidoideae that places both the new species and the only other species known of Paramongaia into a clade within the tribe Clinantheae with three erstwhile species of Clinanthus. We propose an expanded concept of the genus Paramongaia, conserved over Callithauma, for all five species, provide a neotype for Paramongaia viridiflora, and make the necessary combinations in the genus. Paramongaia is morphologically delimited from Clinanthus by the erect, uniformly glaucous leaves, the fusion of the spathe bracts on one side or proximally, the short pedicels, and the insertion of the free filaments below the rim of the staminal corona. A key to the species of Paramongaia is provided. We additionally present some taxonomic notes for the genus Stenomesson.

Abstract:
In order to reduce electricity consumption, the vertical loop geothermal heat pump (GHP) system coupled with a normal air conditioner was installed in an experimental room in the Parot Racha Building, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand for a comparative, long-term measurement program. The decrease in electricity consumption was approximately 30%. On the basis of the data derived from our measurements, the underground temperature seemed to be consistent and lower than the average outside air temperature, over two years. The underground system consisted mainly of two 50-m-long drilling wells and pipes with a total length of 170 m. The well performance was not examined, but both soil and groundwater aquifer (Bangkok aquifer) at 25 to 50 m. could be utilized for the cooling operation. Moreover, the major controlling factors of electricity consumption were found to be the outside air temperatures and the underground water circulation temperatures. In addition, we considered the geology, underground temperature, and aquifer of Bangkok concluding that almost all Bangkok areas are suitable for GHP installation, except for those where the subsurface temperature is too high compared with the outside air temperature.

Abstract:
The article analyzes two Finnish theatre adaptations of Fanny och Alexander, by Ingmar Bergman, and Rauta-aika, by Paavo Haavikko, premiered in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The key question is, how the two works brought the filmic originals’ wealth of material to theatrically manageable proportions, and how the themes of poverty and prosperity were developed by their scenic machineries – a question of theatricality, but also, if you will, of a sort of theatrical exchange: “golden age” to exile or decline in the story-worlds, lavish film to theatrical constraint in production. The first two sections take a specifically economic perspective on the original TV projects and their central storylines; the two final sections address how these storylines were locally woven by the revolving stage and the revolving auditorium used in the theatre productions. On various levels, a playfully “monetary” distinction of metonymy and metaphor is suggested in which metonymic contiguity stands for contextual prosperity (as experience, community, immediacy), metaphoric substitution for relative deprivation (as distance, abstraction, exchange).

Abstract:
SUMMARY The Viet-Muong languages present a wide variety of systems having four to six tones, and reflecting two earlier systems: a six-tone system and a four-tone system in which final -h is preserved. Vietnamese, Muòng and Cuoi are representative of a pure six-tone system in the traditional definition. Sách/ Ruc and Thavung have a four-tone system in which vowel breathiness is preserved in the low tone series. When in such a system breathiness is lost too fast, as in Maleng, the result is a kind of eroded two-tone system. In some languages like Pong and some Vietnamese dialects, final -h was lost without giving contrastive tones, the result being a kind of heterodox four-tone system. The situation of tone systems in Viet-Muong languages is of the highest importance for the theory of tonogenesis.

Additional records of previously described species of Ischnosoma Stephens, 1829 are reported from Georgia, partly also from other regions. Seven species of the genus have reliably been recorded from Georgia, two species of the I. pictum group and widespread, five of the I. spelaeum group and with restricted distributions. Abstract:
The first‐order horizontal and vertical derivatives of the self‐potential (SP) anomalies caused by a 2-D inclined sheet of infinite horizontal extent are analysed to obtain the depth h, the half width a, the inclination α and the constant term containing the resistivity ρ and the current density I of the surrounding medium. The vertical derivative of the SP anomaly is obtained from the horizontal derivative via the Hilbert transform, which is also redefined to yield a modified version, a 270° phase shift of the original function. The point of intersection of these two Hilbert transforms corresponds to the origin. The amplitudes constitute a similar case. The practicability of the method is tested on a theoretical example as well as on field data from the Surda area of Rakha mines, Singhbhum belt, Bihar, India. The results agree well with those of other methods in use. Since the procedure is based on a simple mathematical expression involving the real roots of the derivatives, it can easily be automated.

Abstract:
Tutkimusaineisto koostuu kotitalousasiantuntijoiden teemahaastatteluista (n=11). Analysoimme kotitalousasiantuntijoiden näkemyksiä siitä, miten he rakentavat ymmärrystä arjen haasteista kartoittamalla nuorten elämismaailmaa sekä miten he vastaavat nuorten tuen tarpeeseen. Nuoret tarvitsevat konkreettista, arkeen suuntautuvaa, sosiaalipedagogisesta näkökulmasta suunniteltua tukea muiden tukipalveluiden rinnalle.

Abstract:
A germplasm collection of 59 Schlumbergera Lemaire clones was assayed for isozymes of aspartate aminotransferase, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, leucine aminopeptidase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase, shikimate dehydrogenase, and triosephosphate isomerase. The collection included cultivars of holiday cactus [S. truncata (Haworth) Moran and S. ×buckleyi (T. Moore) Tjaden] plus accessions of S. kautskyi (Horobin & McMillan) N.P. Taylor, S. opuntioides (Löfgren & Dusén) D. Hunt, S. orssichiana Barthlott & McMillan, S. russelliana (Hooker) Britton & Rose, S. ×exotica Barthlott & Rauh, and S. ×reginae McMillan & Orssich. Twelve loci with 36 alleles were detected. Percent polymorphic loci, mean number of alleles per locus, and mean heterozygosity were 83, 3.00, and 0.24, respectively, for the entire collection. Forty-one clones (69%) could be distinguished solely on the basis of their isozyme profiles, but the remaining 18 clones shared profiles with one or two other clones. Isozymes proved useful for determining the parentage of some clones and verifying that some progeny were interspecific hybrids. About 28% of the genetic diversity within the entire collection is unique to four Schlumbergera species that have scarcely been exploited for breeding holiday cactus cultivars.

Abstract:
The importance of this study lies in presenting a program to enable the students with mild intellectual disability to acquire some pre-academic mathematical concepts. It also provides a scale to measure the pre-academic mathematical concepts among the educable students with intellectual disability. The study applied the experimental method on a sample of 20 children with intellectual disability who were distributed into two groups; control and experimental. The sample was selected from Rafha Province schools. The program was made up of 96 sessions, four sessions a week. Each session lasted for 60 minutes and was divided into two 30-minute sessions (activities). The researcher used a pre-academic mathematical concepts scale to collect data and to compare the performance of the experimental and control groups in the pre and post-tests. The results of the study indicated that there are statistically significant differences in the pre-academic mathematical concepts scale among the students of the two groups at the (0.01) level in favor of the experimental group. The improvement in the acquisition of some pre-academic mathematical concepts among the sample members is attributed to the student’s utilization of the program used in the current study, which is based on the guided discovery method. The researcher used a group of attractive activities desired by children. The researcher applied number of immediate reinforcements and constant encouragements to enhance proper functioning. He took into consideration presenting these activities in a gradual simplified way, moving from the easy to the hard.

Abstract:
Cultural Studies have played a pivotal role in understanding and evaluating the power dynamics of the social, political, economic and ethical world order by empirically engaging and focusing on the present-day culture, tracing its historical roots and explicating its attributes with reference to a particular literary text and its reception in a society. Arvind Adiga, the Man-Booker Prize winning Indo-Australian author, in Selection Day, has adroitly detailed how cricket as an individual entity impacts the cultural phenomena of a society by confronting its inherent myriad issues. The narrative delves deep into the lives of two siblings – Radha and Manju, witnesses the dramatic turnaround of events and tries to capture the themes of unfulfilled desires and preordained destinies. The novel also explores how the sport holds different meanings and significance for different characters, each of whom view the game in the light of their own ideology. The author foresees and sensitizes the theme of homosexuality, which is still a taboo and been unheard of, within the sports fraternity. Adiga’s critique of the parental felony, embodied in Mohan Kumar, and its repercussions is the most compelling theme at the heart of this work of fiction. Selection Day powerfully binds together the societal phenomena of class construction, unquenchable thirst for money, sexual orientations and ideologies with a single thread and studies how culture, in itself, is an ever-evolving phenomenon.

Abstract:
The rites of passage are the rites and ceremonies that mark the transition of an individual from one stage to another. These processes consist of separation, transition and incorporation into the new environment. It covers birth, marriage and death. The article attempts to delve into the lifecycle ceremonies of the Kharam and Liangmei inhabitants in Manipur. In pregnancy and child birth, the Kharams take every precaution not to occur any unwanted incident to the mother and child. In naming of the child, rituals like Ratha Kakoi and Laamtol are performed for social recognition and protection of the child. In marriage, they follow clan exogamy and observe certain rituals like Asrke Ka-en and Tui Kahe. Aarke-ka-en is an omen observation performed by the Kathem (village priest) sacrificing a cock. Death is the final crisis in the lifecycle of an individual; and death rituals are meant to ensure for safe passage of the soul to the Kathikho (village of death). It is believed that the departed soul does not go to the Kathikho until the Kumbu Kathak (last mortuary rite) is performed after one or two years. And the soul of unnatural death is not permitted to live in the Kathikho. The Liangmeis also perform rites and rituals in birth, marriage and death for wellbeing, prosperity and safe journey of the soul to the land of death.

Abstract:
We have studied a panel of 10 genes and cDNA sequences that are expressed in a cell cycle-dependent manner in different types of cells from different species and that are inducible by different mitogens. These include five sequences (c-myc, 4F1, 2F1, 2A9, and KC-1) that are preferentially expressed in the early part of the G1 phase, three genes (ornithine decarboxylase, p53, and c-rasHa) preferentially expressed in middle or late G1, and two genes (thymidine kinase and histone H3) preferentially expressed in the S phase of the cell cycle. We have studied the expression of these genes in nonpermissive (tsAF8) and semipermissive (Swiss 3T3) cells infected with adenovirus type 2. Under the conditions of these experiments, adenovirus type 2 infection stimulates cellular DNA synthesis in both tsAF8 and 3T3 cells. However, four of the five early G1 genes (c-myc, 4F1, KC-1, and 2A9) and one of the late G1 genes (c-ras) are not induced by adenovirus infection, although they are strongly induced by serum. The other sequences (2F1, ornithine decarboxylase, p53, thymidine kinase, and histone H3) are activated by both adenovirus and serum. We conclude that the cell cycle-dependent genes activated by adenovirus 2 are a subset of the cell cycle-dependent genes activated by serum. The data suggest that the mechanisms by which serum and adenovirus induce cellular DNA synthesis are not identical.

Abstract:
A simple and efficient in vivo propagation protocol of two cultivars of Euphorbia ×lomi Rauh is described. Mother plants of ‘Nguen Muang’ and ‘Porn Ying Yai’ were soilless grown in 1 coconut coir dust:1 perlite (by volume) and 2 sphagnum peat:1 perlite (by volume) to produce cuttings. Plants cultured in peat-based substrate showed thicker stems (36.0 versus 30.5 mm, respectively), higher production of cuttings (10.4 versus 5.6 per plant), higher water absorption (265.7 versus 153.5 mL/plant/d), and higher content of nutrients in the root zone as compared with those cultivated in coir dust mixture. Cuttings harvested from 1-year-old mother plants of both cultivars were treated with 4000 ppm of α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) powder and inserted into bottom-heated benches filled with different substrates [perlite, 1 perlite:1 coir dust (by volume), coir dust] for rooting. Cuttings in pure perlite evidenced higher rooting percentage (86.2%) and longer roots (6.2 cm) than those in other media. Application of NAA resulted in higher rooting capacity (78.8 versus 68.3%, respectively) and higher amount of roots per cutting (13.4 versus 10.2) than treatment without auxin. Rooted cuttings grown in 1 peat:1 perlite medium (by volume) produced higher marketable potted plants than in 2 peat:1 perlite medium.

Abstract:
This paper examines the causes and consequences of the shifting values infused in the displaced Diasporas in comparison to those who are not from diasporic background yet colonized. Amitav Ghosh’s critically acclaimed novel The Glass Palace introduces few dislocated figures particularly Rajkumar Raha, and his mentor Saya John, who overlook the power play of the British acting as collaborators. Arriving in Burma as orphans, they amassed enormous profit with teak business in the Burmese forests, and gradually transform themselves into business tycoons. Utilizing colonial havoc, they become affluent while fully understand the British power politics. This novel also throws light on two other Nondiasporic characters; Beni Prasad, the District Collector, and Arjun, a Lieutenant in the British Indian Army, who equally shake hands with their European masters being part of their exploitative venture and ideological network. However, interestingly they could not flourish like Rajkumar and Saya John, rather collapsed completely under British policy. Ultimately, they committed suicide through an acute remorse. This paper shows how people from displaced Diaspora become the instances of failed Cosmopolitanism who are unable to rise as transnational in their new home. It also clarifies that, the construction of identity is interrelated with the discourse of power, and the multi-dimensional impact of power and politics.

Abstract:
This article analyses five fourteenth-century Old Norse travel narratives in light of the learned geographical tradition of medieval Iceland. Three of the narratives, Þorvalds þáttr víðfǫrla, Eiríks saga víðfǫrla, and Yngvars saga víðfǫrla, focus on the travels of Nordic people to eastern Europe and Asia; while the latter two, Eiríks saga rauða and Grœnlendinga saga, tell of travels to the continent later named North America. While the travels to the East deal with pilgrimage and the search for the terrestrial Paradise in the service of individual salvation and missionary activities in Scandinavia and Iceland more specifically, the travels to the West are focused on the violent conquest and Christianization of newfound peripheral areas and their peoples. What these narratives have in common, and owe to the learned (Plinian) tradition, is their dehumanized view of foreign and strange people: the giants and monsters of the East, and the skrælingar (indigenous peoples) and einfœtingar (sciopods) of the West. In these sagas travels to the East, while dangerous, introduce heroes to courtly manners, encyclopedic knowledge, and salvation; whereas travels to the West lead to mayhem and death and all attempts at settlement there fail miserably, making Greenland the westernmost outpost of Christianity in the world. This article aims to show how this learned tradition was adapted for use in saga literature to contrast the monstrous and heathen periphery with the more central and piously Christian Iceland.
