Abstract:
This essay explores whether the sexual murderer is a unique type of sex offender. Two competing hypotheses of sexual homicide are outlined: the unique type hypothesis and the situational hypothesis. The essay discusses the heterogeneity of sexual murderers and reviews the different typologies of sexual homicide and the most common types. Differences and similarities between sexual murderers and non-homicidal sex offenders are reviewed, focusing on offender characteristics, criminal career, situational factors, and modus operandi/crime characteristics. The essay examines the factors leading to a lethal outcome in sexual assaults by looking at the most important factors, and the combinations of factors, leading to the death of the victim. Misconceptions about the modus operandi of sexual murderers are discussed along with the main behaviors they use to commit their crime. Finally the essay explores the differences between serial and non-serial sexual murderers.

Abstract:
There is a growing recognition among clinicians that any type of sexual behavior can become pathologically impulsive or compulsive. There is quite a bit of debate about terminology for this condition, the diagnostic criteria, assessment methods and treatment approaches. In the absence of clear consensus, clinicians are struggling with how to help the many men and women who suffer and seek help from this type of problem. This chapter will review the author’s assessment and treatment approach. Clinicians will need to keep abreast of the literature as new research evolves and follow the continued debate around this controversial area.

Abstract:
Well-controlled, double-blind, multisite investigations have demonstrated the efficacy of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors for the treatment of erectile problems of mixed etiologies. A large number of studies affirm that serotonergic antidepressants delay ejaculation in men with premature ejaculation. Similarly, studies have demonstrated the efficacy of transdermal testosterone therapy in restoring sexual function in women after oophorectomy. There is suggestive evidence of the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of sexual dysfunction in both sexes. However, the number and methodological rigor of such studies are limited and the effect sizes tend to be smaller than studies of pharmacological therapies.

Full text
Abstract:
Focusing on online-facilitated sexual abuse, this book takes a rigorous approach to existing literature to address some of the most pressing public and policy questions on this type of abuse. The book examines which children are most vulnerable, how their vulnerability is made, what they are vulnerable to and how we can foster resilience. It begins with an overview of online child sexual abuse. Victims are made both by the acts perpetrated on them and by the social context in which these acts take place and the consequences that are felt. The book examines online-facilitated child sexual abuse research through the lens of this social context, which contains multiple definitions of what is childhood, sex, and abuse as it connects to the Internet. The book calls for greater clarity and agreement on definitions and measurement practices concerning online child sexual victimisation. In conclusion, it recommends that guardianship responsibility is extended to children themselves and considers some of the technical tools that might assist their participation.

Abstract:
The importance of nutrition in sexual health cannot be overemphasized. Given the prevalence of obesity in America and its associated morbidities such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, sadly, sexual dysfunction is on the rise. Some—usually men —confronting a sexual problem may seek to consume commercial supplements or specific foods traditionally believed to improve sexual performance. However, the scientific evidence makes it clear that oysters, asparagus, or supplements are far less relevant than optimizing one's daily diet. Macronutrition impacts sexual function in many ways and as a consequence of specific dietary regimens, habits, and health practices. Nutritional patterns negatively affect testosterone, nitric oxide, cortisol, and inflammatory pathways and have other impacts. This chapter sets out what science says about macronutrition's key role in sexual function and dysfunction and advocates the best nutritional strategies for improved sexual function, vitality, and overall health.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the economics of international human trafficking of women for commercial sexual exploitation. It begins with a review of the economics literature on sex trafficking, with particular emphasis on factors that determines which type of country people are trafficked to and where people are trafficked from. It then describes the datasets that have been and can be used in studying trafficking. It also considers some economics papers that work toward integrating the analysis of trafficking to include both sending and receiving countries. It suggests that the economic literature on human smuggling is particularly promising and should be incorporated by economists studying trafficking. The article concludes by highlighting gaps in the economics trafficking literature and outlining possible areas of future research.

Lehmann, Vicky, and Marrit A. Tuinman. Body Image Issues Across Cancer Types. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190655617.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: This chapter provides a broad overview of body image challenges experienced by cancer patients and survivors, first focusing on patient characteristics and common treatment side effects that can affect body image and then summarizing findings specific to certain clusters of diagnoses. Research in the area of body image and cancer has largely focused on patients with breast cancer. A growing body of research also recognizes the negative impact of altered appearance and functioning on body image outcomes of patients with sexual organ-related, gastrointestinal, head and neck, skin, and other cancers. Body image is typically evaluated within the context of a single type of cancer and rarely compared across different types. This chapter proposes a visibility-stability model as a conceptual framework to facilitate understanding of the impact of cancer on body image across cancer types. This framework further considers functional body changes and survivors’ subjective evaluations as core components.

Stanghellini, Giovanni. Schizophrenia and the disembodiment of desire. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198792062.003.0030.

Full text
Abstract:
The schizophrenic person’s existential trajectory reflects the intolerable mixture of his desperate need for the Other and his hopeless attempts to orientate in human, and especially erotic, relationships. The schizophrenic person may turn away from actual reality into a mystical-romantic, ‘higher’ ideal, which like a dim mist protects him from the encounter with the real Other. Two features seem to best characterize this type of existence. One is his philosophy of life that indulges in cramping reflections concerned with spirituality, that is, rectitude, fidelity, nobility, and purity. The second is disembodiment. Sexual excitement is experienced as a storming, oppressing experience of something going through and travelling across one’s own body. The ‘higher’ ideal image of love seems to downplay this intolerable feeling and transform sexual excitement into a disembodied type of desire. The essential feature of this type of existence is its being disembodied.

Fisher, Bonnie S., and Heidi L. Scherer. Exploring the methods behind sexual violence estimates. Edited by Teela Sanders. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190213633.013.2.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay documents the innovations that have been made to improve measuring the scope and dimensions of sexual violence over the last four decades. How sexual violence has been defined and operationalized and methodological factors (e.g., context, two-stage measurement process, question wording, reference period, and mode of administration) are compared and contrasted for several national-level victimization data sources. This essay explores the development of a number of national and international surveys designed to estimate the scope and dimensions of different types of sexual violence. This essay also includes a cross-national examination of sexual violence rates focusing on both differences and similarities across countries, concluding with a discussion of unresolved measurement issues. It also provides thoughts on future directions in measuring sexual violence.
