This chapter discusses how Judson associated the Barbirolli years with a period of change in his managerial interests. Barbirolli remained at the Philharmonic until 1943, completing his two-year contract in 1942 as one of several guest conductors. For Barbirolli, the New York years represented an apprenticeship of sorts. The decision to hire Barbirolli came one year after Judson had resigned his management post in Philadelphia. He remained the most powerful manager in America, with connections on symphony boards across the country and a near monopoly on conductors. But his reactions to Barbiro

In contrast, discretionary award givers enjoy leeway in deciding whom to honour. This type of award acknowledges laudable behaviour ex post and is not a reward individuals normally expect to receive. This chapter examines individuals’ career-making in professional service firms. Using Kanter’s (1989) typology of bureaucratic, professional, and entrepreneurial career forms, it argues that within PSFs are elements of all three, sometimes working in parallel and sometimes in competition. After a broad overview of Kanter’s ideal types as manifest within the PSF, the chapter considers how these are institutionalized through particular career practices. It highlights the importance of the client in professional career-making, working either as a mechanism of social closure, or of transformation.

He identifies four types of human will: the created will, which he describes as a hinge; the fallen will, a link in a chain binding human beings to sin; the redeemed will, which is a root of love; and the fully free will, to be enjoyed in the next life, when perfection is made complete. This chapter explores the nature of the connections between contemporary understandings of the bodhisattva path as socially engaged, and the canonical Mahāyāna tradition in India—the Ugraparipṛcchā-sūtra and the works of Śāntideva. These canonical treatments of the bodhisattva’s career are compared with a contemporary understanding as reflected in the commentary on Śāntideva’s Bodhicaryāvatāra by Pema Chödrön. This analysis reveals distinct visions of the bodhisattva, from the Ugra’s elite superhero, to Śāntideva’s saintly bodhisattva, to the modern view of the bodhisattva as social activist.
