Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This project is concerned with the circumstances under which people come to support issues that affect Black women. In particular, Intersectional Solidarity challenges the notion that racial consciousness or gender consciousness alone shape political preferences and instead argues that when it comes to issues that affect marginalized groups at the intersection of multiple identities, intersectional group consciousness shapes political behavior. This book defines intersectional solidarity as a political disposition that is characterized by awareness and distress over the oppression of marginalized subgroups, such as Black women and LGBTQ+ people of color. The central contribution of this book is the development of original measure: the intersectional solidarity index (ISI). The ISI is a four-item scale that captures group consciousness at the intersection of race, gender, class, and sexuality. By measuring intersectional solidarity, we are better able to understand the types of people who support addressing issues that disproportionately and directly affect Black women. Finally, Intersectional Solidarity focuses on how intersectional solidarity influences support for issues that affect Black women. The book expands the types of policies examined by exploring intersectional issues, such as the circumstances under which the mass public support the Maternal CARE Act, a policy that addresses the racial disparity in maternal healthcare, as well as Equal Pay Certification, which is a policy that addresses the race/gender pay gap. Intersectional Solidarity demonstrates that to fully understand how people come to care about issues that affect Black women, scholars are required to ask new questions.

The introduction lays out a model of social movement relationships that are neither coalitions nor oppositional, including their form and outcomes. It outlines three types of relationships between feminists and conservatives: collaborative adversarial relationships, narrow neutrality, and ambivalent alliances. It gives an overview of the three case studies (pornography, child sexual abuse, and the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA). It discusses feminist and conservative engagement with the intersections of gender and race in issues of violence and crime. It discusses mechanisms and paths of social movement outcomes for federal legislation and policy and cultural processes within the state, including emotion, frames, and discourse. It gives an overview of the book’s methodology and data, including analysis of transcripts of congressional hearings, conservative and feminist publications, amicus briefs, and governmental and archival material.

Abstract:
The interwar years saw the flourishing of agrarian populist ideology all over East Central Europe. However, rather than a homogeneous movement, there were several types of agrarianism, responding to local exigencies and often marked by considerable internal cleavages. The main common denominator was the doctrine of a “third way,” which usually meant a critique of both liberal Western capitalism and socialist collectivism. While the private ownership of land was unquestioned, agrarian theoreticians argued that this did not fit the logic of capitalistic production. There was no consensus, however, whether in the future these countries would eventually become industrialized or whether the international division of labor would keep them forever agrarian. Agrarian populism had many intersections with ethno-populism and the stress on the peasantry as the only “uncontaminated” social class could also have nationalistic connotations. Nevertheless, most peasant parties rejected the radical nationalism characterizing neo-conservative and extreme-rightist political camps.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores the intersections of values and meanings in two types of replay: where video games meet classical music, and vice versa. From the bleeps and bloops of 1980s arcades to the world’s most prestigious concert halls, classical music and video games have a long history together. Medieval chant, classical symphonies, postminimalist film scores, and everything in between fill the soundtracks of many video games, while world-renowned orchestras frequently perform concerts of game music to sold-out audiences. Yet combining video games and classical music also presents a challenge to traditional cultural values around these media products. Classical music is frequently understood as high art, insulated from the whims of popular culture; video games, by contrast, are often regarded as pure entertainment, fundamentally incapable of crossing over into art. By delving into the shifting and often contradictory cultural meanings that emerge when classical music meets video games, Unlimited Replays offers a new perspective on the possibilities and challenges of art in contemporary society.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary argument of this chapter is that children’s and youth’s defiance may be misread and misinterpreted unless a greater understanding of the interplay of genders, races, and ethnicities is grasped. It analyzes various types of aggression to illustrate that the norms that determine harms from aggressive behavior need to be articulated and critiqued. The chapter sets out central characteristics of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), then analyzes the larger context for understanding defiant behavior. Research on features of aggression in children’s play is included, and this leads to an analysis of how to understand the harms of aggression. The author also examines the matrix of raced, gendered, and classed intersections in the interpretation and reproduction of norms for behavior. This analysis of the construct of aggression makes it more difficult to interpret certain behavior as maladaptive defiant traits. The chapter ends with considerations as to why children (and adults) might have reasons for being defiant.

Abstract:
The chapter discusses the administration, economics, population, poverty, life expectancy, and practices of Roman imperial urban life and New Testament intersections with them, focusing chiefly on the eastern Mediterranean. It describes the Roman Empire as a network of cities hierarchically arranged according to differing kinds of privileges. It treats the architecture usually found in cities and the usual offices of city administration. It presents typical urban demography and population density. It considers taxation, urban poverty, and wealth distribution, presenting Christians as impoverished as a corrective to scholarship that has exaggerated their wealth. It discusses the artisan economy of cities and the lives of tradespeople as a backdrop for the settings of Christianity. The administration and organization of differing types of associations are considered as an analogy for conceiving Christian assemblies. It describes the integration of Jews in urban life, together with ad hoc rather than empire-wide policies of toleration. It discusses “god-fearers” as a term to describe non-Jews affiliated with synagogues, as well as a word used to describe the piety of devotees of other religions.

Jackson, Pamela Braboy, and Rashawn Ray. How Families Matter. Lexington Books, 2018. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666999143.

Full text
Abstract:
The family remains the most contested institution in American society. How Families Matter: Simply Complicated Intersections of Race, Gender, and Work explores the ways adults make sense of their family lives in the midst of the complicated debates generated by politicians and social scientists. Given the rhetoric about the family, this book is a well overdue account of family life from the perspective of families themselves. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a whole view of different types of families. The chapters focus on contemporary issues such as who do we consider to be a part of our family, can anyone achieve family-life balance, and how do families celebrate when they get together? Relying on stories shared by a racially/ethnically diverse group of forty-six families, this book finds that parents and siblings cultivate a family identity that both defines who they are and influences who they become. It is a welcomed installment to conversations about the family, as families are finally viewed within a single study from a multicultural lens.

Abstract:
This book makes complicated concepts and findings in modern neuroscience accessible to anyone with an interest in how the brain works. It explains in detail how every experience we have from the moment we are conceived changes our brains. Finally, it advances the idea that psychotherapy is a type of life experience that alters brain function and corrects aberrant brain connections. The chapters explore what makes our brains different from our nearest genetic neighbors; how life’s experiences affect the way genes in the brain are expressed and neurons connect with each other; why connections between different parts of the brain are important in both health and disease; what happens in the brains of animals and humans in the face of sudden fear, in depression, or when falling in love; and how medications and psychotherapies work. The book is based on cutting-edge research in neuroscience, psychiatry, and psychology and includes references to the scientific literature. Written by an author who studied human behavior and brain function for three decades, it is presented in a highly accessible manner, full of personal anecdotes and observations, and it touches on many of the controversies in contemporary mental health practice.

This chapter deals with the residues of a Bruhat-Tits building whose building at infinity is an exceptional quadrangle. It begins with the remark that if Λ‎ is an arbitrary quadratic space of type Eℓ for ℓ = 6, 7 or 8 or of typeF₄ over a field K that is complete with respect to a discrete valuation, and if in the F4-case the subfield F is closed with respect to this valuation and if Δ‎ is the corresponding Moufang quadrangle of type Eℓ or F₄, then there always exists a unique affine building Ξ‎ such that Δ‎ is the building at infinity of Ξ‎ with respect to its complete system of apartments. The chapter also considers the standard embedding of the apartment A in the Euclidean plane which takes the intersection of A and R to the set of eight triangles containing the origin. Finally, it describes a Moufang polygon with two root group sequences.

Mandell, Hinda. Sex Scandals, Gender, and Power in Contemporary American Politics. ABC-CLIO, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216013389.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing tabloidization of politics and focus on politicians involved in sex scandals is both problematic and important. This book examines how gender impacts political sex scandals in the United States, in the past and today; explains how political sex scandals contribute to the mistrust of government; and identifies why these titillating events do have serious consequences for our political system. When a major political sex scandal occurs, it occupies as much as 25 percent of all news coverage in the United States. Even if people may deny it, they enjoy "consuming" and talking about political sex scandals. Written by a former journalist who has frequently explored the intersections of politics, sex, and gender in the United States, Sex Scandals, Gender, and Power in Contemporary American Politics investigates how political sex scandals contribute to the mistrust of government and why these titillating events have great significance in our frenzied media environment. The book makes use of comprehensive descriptive data (including statistics) to explain how political sex scandals are a representation of society's broader gender dynamics, conveying subtle messages about power and morality. It addresses the roles of men and women in political sex scandals over time, the increasing tabloidization of politics, and the often-overlooked consequences of sex scandals for the political system. Readers will see how the types of sex scandals that politicians are typically involved in differ by political party, and that all major political sex scandals have involved male—not female—politicians engaged in bad behavior. Author Hinda Mandell also documents how scandals' multiple negative effects for the politicians themselves and for society include turning politics into a spectator sport, contributing to the mistrust of government, the questioning of politicians' competence and judgment as a group, and politicians' diminishing effectiveness in office.

Anker, Victoria, Rachael Maysels, and Maria Valasia Peppa, eds. Pushing the Paradigm of Global Water Security. IWA Publishing, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.2166/9781789062540.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This book brings together early career researchers, non-governmental organisations and industry practitioners, indigenous and local communities, and government agency workers to interrogate the concept of water security. By collating multicultural perspectives, diverse contributions, and illustrative media, we challenge the current anthropocentric, technocratic narrative of water security, according to which: water security is solely for humans; development initiatives and interventions are driven by neocolonial and neoliberal ideologies; the socio-cultural approach to water security is secondary to a technical, engineering-based approach; and interdisciplinarity is not practical in its application. Presented here is an amalgamation of our personal and professional efforts to address these challenges. The nuance of this book is in our methodology: transnational cooperation, collaboration across disciplines, and diagnostic problem-solving. While we do not promise a single solution (there is no such thing as ‘one size fits all’), we believe this timely contribution broadens the discussion around water security through its firm rejection of reductionist approaches to this most complex of ‘wicked problems’. Most notably, we push for the radical acceptance of the indivisibility of environmental conservation, social stability, and economic vitality. We resist the temptation of ‘green growth’, recognising it as little more than neoliberalism in disguise. The brilliance, innovation, and recall to tradition that emerge through this book demonstrate the importance of solutions that are informed by a plurality of knowledge types (from scientific and technical to indigenous and local) and generated through collaboration and partnerships to support the attainment of socio-ecological justice. Essential reading for water practitioners, policy makers, and multilateral organisations in the development sector, it is also a must-read for doctoral and master's students working at intersections of water, and undergraduates who want to challenge their subject-specific perspectives on water and push disciplinary boundaries. Abstract:
The prevalence of both deception and communication technology in our personal and professional lives has given rise to an important set of questions at the intersection of deception and technology, referred to as ‘digital deception’. These questions include issues concerned with deception and self-presentation, such as how the Internet can facilitate deception through the manipulation of identity. A second set of questions is concerned with how we produce lies. For example, do we lie more in our everyday conversations in some media than in others? Do we use different media to lie about different types of things, to different types of people? This article examines these questions by first elaborating on the notion of digital deception in the context of the literature on traditional forms of deception. It considers identity-based forms of deception online and the lies that are a frequent part of our everyday communications.

This chapter highlights the methodological contributions of Robert E. Rodes Jr. Writing at the intersection of law and theology, Rodes shows how conceptual tools used to distinguish between different types of legal statements can shed light on knotty theological and ethical problems. He distinguishes among three functions of law: normative, constitutive, and epistemic. He also differentiates between two methods by which the law promotes moral values: didactic and instrumental. And he identifies two strategies for relating the church to the world: Erastian and High Church. By reframing conflicts like the one between religious liberty and same-sex marriage, Rodes offers legally-inspired strategies for diffusing the culture wars.

This chapter examines how social delineations of boys’ singing inform the boychoir conductor’s choices for vocal technique, programming, and rehearsal procedure. The introduction identifies structural elements that delineate a boychoir from other types of choirs, especially in the United States, with its traditions of multistage maturity level singers across different vocal registers. Once established, the chapter examines signature programming, rehearsal, and performance norms, with attention to the intersection of traditional and contemporary practices. Following a consideration of the boychoir community and its relationship to the community-at-large, the chapter closes with the concluding assertion of a boychoir pedagogy that synergizes the handling of different levels of boychoir development (especially voice changes) and adult and boy meanings of boys’ singing.

Abstract:
In a new era of global virology that requires novel methodologies to improve the comprehension of viruses and viral phenomena,Viral Behaviorsexplores the cultural, material, and artistic significance of viral agents. Across a rich variety of case studies stemming from different areas of interest—covering literature, the graphic arts and scientific visualization, as well as performance, installation and bioart—this book asks whether embracing the complexity of viruses, rather than obsessively measuring, dissecting, or precisely mapping their parts and manifestations, may provide new methodological directions in the intersection of scientific thinking and artistic practice. The book examines the struggles and successes of science and technology to tame the elusive nature and behavior of viruses, and the potential of art-based and cross-disciplinary collaborations to better communicate their complex making and intense entanglement with the world at large. Combining perspectives from art, philosophy, science and technology, it places biological and informational viruses alongside each other, revealing that, while the two types of agents affect the world in very different ways, their histories and manifestations contain surprising similarities that speak to a cultural continuum. Viral Behaviorsunravels the extraordinary mobility of viruses across disciplines, and their intersection with all aspects of culture, rather than their import within one specific disciplinary realm. It shows how the numerous attempts by artists, scientists and professionals to tackle, represent and appropriate viruses, and their intricate dynamism, can lead to new nuanced and sophisticated understandings of these substances and their related phenomena, and reveals the contribution of non-measurable or non-traditional practices in their construction and dissemination.

This chapter focuses on religious discrimination. Not only does freedom of religion or belief prohibit undue infringements into a person’s religious freedom; it also prohibits discrimination—the denial of equality and unfair treatment based on religion. The discussion on discrimination has become more and more complex in recent debate, both with a view to different types of actors (State institutions, de facto authorities, and non-State institutions) and to different forms of discrimination (direct, indirect, structural, intersectional). While many experiences of discrimination continue to be overt and recognizable, more sensitivity has also arisen concerning concealed forms of discrimination, such as indirect discrimination, sometimes hidden under seemingly neutral rules. Reasonable accommodation should be used to tackle these phenomena. Moreover the State bears the responsibility to address the root causes of intolerance, societal discrimination, and violence committed in the name of religion.

Abstract:
The colonial days of America marked not only the beginnings of a country, but also of a new culture, part of which was the first American music publishers, entrepreneurs, and instrument makers forging musical communities from New England to New Spain. Elements of British, Spanish, German, Scots-Irish, and Native American music all contributed to the many cultures and subcultures of the early nation. While English settlers largely sought to impose their own culture in the new land, the adaptation of native music by Spanish settlers provided an important cultural intersection. The music of the Scots-Irish in the middle colonies planted the seeds of a folk ballad tradition. In New England, the Puritans developed a surprisingly rich—and recreational—musical culture. At the same time, the Regular Singing Movement attempted to reduce the role of the clergy in religious services. More of a cultural examination than a music theory book, this work provides vastly informative narrative chapters on early American music and its role in colonial and Revolutionary culture. Chapter bibliographies, a timeline, and a subject index offer additional resources for readers. TheAmerican History through Musicseries examines the many different types of music prevalent throughout U.S. history, as well as the roles these music types have played in American culture. John Ogasapian's volume on the Colonial and Revolutionary period applies this cultural focus to the music of America's infancy and illuminates the surprisingly complex relationships in music of that time.

This chapter discusses the free 2-ball quotients arising as finite covers of the projective plane branched along line arrangements. It first considers a surface X obtained by blowing up the singular intersection points of a linear arrangement in the complex projective plane, as well as a smooth compact complex surface Y that is a finite covering of X. If Y is of general type with vanishing proportionality deviation, then it is a free 2-ball quotient. The chapter then looks at line arrangements that have equal ramification indices along each of the proper transforms of the original lines, along with cases of blowing down rational curves and removing elliptic curves. It also enumerates all possibilities for the assigned weights of the arrangements, under the assumption that divisors of negative or infinite weight on the blown-up line arrangements do not intersect.

Abstract:
This book explores how and why controversies over liquid biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel) and hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) unfolded in surprisingly similar ways in the Global North and South. In the early 2000s the search was on for fuels that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, spur economic development in rural regions, and diversify national energy supplies. Biofuels and fracking took center stage as promising commodities and technologies. But controversy quickly erupted. Global enthusiasm for these fuels and the widespread projections for their production around the world collided with local politics. Rural and remote places, such as coastal east Africa and Canada’s Yukon territory, became hotbeds of contention in these new energy politics. Opponents of biofuels in Kenya and of fracking in the Yukon activated specific identities, embraced scale shifts across transnational networks, brokered relationships between disparate communities and interests, and engaged in contentious performances with symbolic resonance. To explain these convergent dynamics of contention and resistance, the book argues that the emergence of grievances and the mechanisms of mobilization that are used to resist new fuel technologies depend less on the type of energy developed than on intersecting elements of the political economy of energy—specifically finance, ownership, and trade relations. Taken together, the intersecting elements of the political economy of energy shape patterns of resistance in new energy frontiers.

Abstract:
This article discusses the connection between the matrix models and algebraic geometry. In particular, it considers three specific applications of matrix models to algebraic geometry, namely: the Kontsevich matrix model that describes intersection indices on moduli spaces of curves with marked points; the Hermitian matrix model free energy at the leading expansion order as the prepotential of the Seiberg-Witten-Whitham-Krichever hierarchy; and the other orders of free energy and resolvent expansions as symplectic invariants and possibly amplitudes of open/closed strings. The article first describes the moduli space of algebraic curves and its parameterization via the Jenkins-Strebel differentials before analysing the relation between the so-called formal matrix models (solutions of the loop equation) and algebraic hierarchies of Dijkgraaf-Witten-Whitham-Krichever type. It also presents the WDVV (Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde) equations, along with higher expansion terms and symplectic invariants.

Asian American Identities and Practices: Folkloric Expressions in Everyday Life probes the intersection, interplay, and interconnection of Asian and Asian American folklore and folklife in globally fluid and culturally creative landscapes among Asian American communities and subjects. Asian American folklore, as a way of life and practice, has emerged and continues to emerge as Asian Americans lay claim and take root in the American mosaic. As such, the contributors in this volume all show how the Asian American historical experiences and continued international migration inform the production of new folkloric practices, subjectivities, and ideologies, which in turn strengthen specific Asian American ways of life while normalizing folklore that are squarely produced in Asian America. This collectionillustrates that Asian American folklore and folklife is interwoven with social relationships, the creation of various types of ethnic, cultural, and national identities, and adaptive strategies within the particular historical periods, communities, and shifting boundaries and demographics of Asian America. The global context of Asian American folklore and folklife, especially in the racially charged post-9/11 context, bespeaks how Asians, past and present, maneuver the cultural spaces of their host society and old traditions to create new sites and new opportunities for cultural folkloric production and expression in everyday life.

Abstract:
This book provides an introduction to algebraic cycles on complex algebraic varieties, to the major conjectures relating them to cohomology, and even more precisely to Hodge structures on cohomology. The book is intended for both students and researchers, and not only presents a survey of the geometric methods developed in the last thirty years to understand the famous Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, but also examines recent work by the author. It focuses on two central objects: the diagonal of a variety—and the partial Bloch-Srinivas type decompositions it may have depending on the size of Chow groups—as well as its small diagonal, which is the right object to consider in order to understand the ring structure on Chow groups and cohomology. An exploration of a sampling of recent works by the author looks at the relation, conjectured in general by Bloch and Beilinson, between the coniveau of general complete intersections and their Chow groups and a very particular property satisfied by the Chow ring of K3 surfaces and conjecturally by hyper-Kähler manifolds. In particular, the book delves into arguments originating in Nori's work that have been further developed by others.

Abstract:
This book follows how medical ideas, stemming from the so-called birth of the clinic, zigzagged across the intellectual landscape of the French Revolution and its aftermath. It was a remarkable “hotspot” in the historical timeline, when doctors and scientists pioneered a staggering number of fields — from forensic investigation to evolutionary biology — and their innovations captivated the public imagination. During the 1790s and beyond, medicine left the somber halls of universities, hospitals, and learned societies and became profoundly politicized, inspiring a whole panoply of different — often bizarre and shocking — subcultures. The book reconstructs the ethos of the time and its labyrinthine underworld, traversing the intersection between medicine and pornography in the works of the Marquis de Sade, efforts to create a “natural history of women,” the proliferation of sex manuals and books on family hygiene, anatomical projects to sculpt antique bodies, the rage for physiognomic self-help books that taught readers to identify social and political “types” in post-revolutionary Paris, the use of physiological medicine as a literary genre, and the “mesmerist renaissance” with its charged debates over animal magnetism and somnambulism. In creating this reconstruction, the book argues that the place and authority of medicine evolved, at least in part, out of an attempt to redress the acute sense of dislocation produced by the Revolution. The book exposes how medicine then became a subversive, radical, and ideologically charged force in French society.

Abstract:
This book highlights the importance of time and timing in economic and social development. ‘Compressed development’ consists of two key features and their interaction: the tendency for development processes to unfold more rapidly (compression) and the institution-shaping influences of major periods of change and growth, especially when countries become integrated into the global economy (era). Using an interdisciplinary conceptual framework of state–market and organization–technology co-evolution, the authors contrast the experiences of ‘early’ and ‘late’ developers such as the United Kingdom and Japan, with countries–most notably China–which have become more deeply integrated with the global economy since the 1990s. Compressed developers experience ‘thin industrialization’, layered types of employment, and ‘double burdens’ or challenges in social development. National development strategies must accommodate global value chains and powerful international actors on the one hand, and decentralization on the other. To cope, and thrive, states must remain developmental, whilst being increasingly engaged and adaptive in multiple levels of governance. Compressed Development explores the historical and contemporary features of economic and social development at the intersection of development studies and studies of globalization. By bringing a new perspective on the ‘middle-income trap’, as well as the emerging digital economy, and the state–market and geopolitical tensions that are currently upending conventional wisdoms, the book offers timely insights that will be useful, not only for students of development, but for policymakers, business, and labour organization seeking to navigate the rushing currents of contemporary capitalism.

Abstract:
Abstract The advent of digital technologies has transformed markets and resulted in unprecedented levels of market concentration, with a handful of digital giants controlling the provision of many goods and services. Against these changing market dynamics, Competition Law and Policy in Digital Markets: A Comparative Analysis of the EU and China provides a critical comparative analysis of the application of competition law in digital markets in the European Union (EU) and China. The book deciphers how these two key competition law jurisdictions apply their respective competition laws against different digital giants and the potential impact of those applications in the evolution of digital markets. This book first maps the characteristics of digital markets and the challenges they raise for competition law enforcement and, second, critically discusses decisional practice and policy developments in the EU and China. The discussion identifies potential competition law problems in the digital economy and covers various types of anticompetitive conduct at the intersection of consumer, data protection, and competition law. It also identifies contentious cases, querying whether competition law can act as a gap filler or whether other regulatory tools are better suited to address such problems. Pioneering and timely, Competition Law and Policy in Digital Markets examines the challenges posed to competition law enforcement by these new dynamics. The similarities and divergent approaches between competition law enforcers in the EU and China are examined in a bid to contribute to a more transparent debate between the two.

Abstract:
This unique text is an accessible and practical guide addressing legal and related issues stemming from the deprivation of liberty of children and young people. It provides a roadmap to the deprivation of liberty of children and young people, from initially identifying that a child or young person may be deprived of their liberty or that a deprivation of liberty may be required, through to taking an application to court and the course of proceedings. This includes the scope of the Family Court, the Court of Protection and the Family Division of the High Court. This title: - Defines a deprivation of liberty, considering how this may look for both children and young people (under 16s and 16 and 17 year olds) - Explores how a deprivation of liberty may be authorised, including the different statutory schemes and courts - Considers the intersection with care proceedings and the interplay between deprivations of liberty and the Children Act 1989 - Explains the different placement types for children and young people including placements outside of the jurisdiction - Provides practical guidance on the transition of children into adulthood - Includes case law summaries The book unpacks the complicated and convoluted issues surrounding this challenging area of law, and in doing so, supports advocates, practitioners, parents, family and carers who are involved in the lives of children and young people who are deprived of their liberty. This title is also available within Bloomsbury Professional's Family Law online service.

Abstract:
Abstract This book is an example of applying the feminist perspective in philosophy, ethics, and bioethics to the consideration of future human space missions. Feminism is a thought perspective that is rarely present in the reflection on space and space missions. This book focuses on bioethical issues that may arise in future long-term and long-distance space missions. The issues are primarily human enhancement and human reproduction in space. Applying the perspective of feminist bioethics makes it possible to see potential risks that are not usually raised by nonfeminist bioethics. The book points out the consequences of space missions for traditionally marginalized and excluded groups, such as women, nonwhites, people with disabilities, indigenous people, and the sexually nonbinary. In a manner appropriate to feminism, the book discusses ethical and bioethical issues using such explanatory categories as sex and gender, power, oppression, discrimination, domination, and exclusion. The book offers a broad perspective, going beyond bioethical issues to a wider context that includes the global situation in the world. The book offers an intersectional perspective, highlighting the dangers and risks of overlapping different types of oppression and discrimination. While most attention is given to the situation of women and their potential oppression in space, particularly in the context of their reproductive rights, considerable attention is given to other excluded groups, including the disabled. The book aims to sensitize us to the need to recognize in our activities the risks of inequality and exclusion that may be replicated in space.

Abstract:
Info-metrics is a framework for modeling, reasoning, and drawing inferences under conditions of noisy and insufficient information. It is an interdisciplinary framework situated at the intersection of information theory, statistical inference, and decision-making under uncertainty. In a recent book on the Foundations of Info-Metrics, Golan (OUP, 2018) provides the theoretical underpinning of info-metrics and the necessary tools and building blocks for using that framework. This volume complements Golan’s book and expands on the series of studies on the classical maximum entropy and Bayesian methods published in the different proceedings started with the seminal collection of Levine and Tribus (1979) and continuing annually. The objective of this volume is to expand the study of info-metrics, and information processing, across the sciences and to further explore the basis of information-theoretic inference and its mathematical and philosophical foundations. This volume is inherently interdisciplinary and applications oriented. It contains some of the recent developments in the field, as well as many new cross-disciplinary case studies and examples. The emphasis here is on the interrelationship between information and inference where we view the word ‘inference’ in its most general meaning – capturing all types of problem solving. That includes model building, theory creation, estimation, prediction, and decision making. The volume contains nineteen chapters in seven parts. Although chapters in each part are related, each chapter is self-contained; it provides the necessary tools for using the info-metrics framework for solving the problem confronted in that chapter. This volume is designed to be accessible for researchers, graduate students, and practitioners across the disciplines, requiring only some basic quantitative skills. The multidisciplinary nature and applications provide a hands-on experience for the reader.

Abstract:
The Inter-Relationship Between E-Commerce and Right to Privacy: An Assessment” explores the intricate dynamics between the burgeoning world of e-commerce and the fundamental right to privacy. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of how these two spheres interact and influence each other, especially in the context of the digital age where online transactions and data exchanges are ubiquitous. Beginning with an introduction to the core concepts, the book systematically examines the nature and scope of information technology and e-commerce. It delves into the various types of e-commerce, their benefits and limitations, and the unique position of e-consumers in a borderless market. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to understanding the right to privacy, its meaning, and its particular relevance in India. A comparative study follows, exploring how different global regions, including the European Union, Japan, the United States, China, and Singapore, approach consumer privacy in e-commerce. This provides a diverse international perspective on the issue. The book then shifts focus to the Indian context, discussing the rights of consumers and the specific challenges posed by data privacy in e-commerce and e-banking. It analyzes the Indian legal system’s approach to consumer protection in e-commerce, highlighting cases of fraud and the measures taken to address these issues. Abstract:
The multiple facets of this volume belong to five large themes. The first theme, that of persuasion and manipulation, is studied here through electoral campaigns (i.e., mental filters used in voting manipulation, the mechanisms of vote mobilisation, manipulation and storytelling models). The institutionalization of education represents the second theme, approached here through specific interdisciplinary instruments: the intersection of higher education with public learning, the answers of the knowledge society to the issues of contemporary work problems, the institutional relationships used to solve educational problems specific to childhood and adolescence, as well as the role of media competencies in professional development. The third theme is related to the inheritance and transmission of cultural identity, instrumentalized through issues such as: the duty of intergenerational justice with regard to cultural heritage, education and vocational training in library science, the social inclusion role of public and digital libraries. The collective and cultural identity of communities represents the fourth large theme, being approached through a triple perspective: the philosophical background of restoring the political dignity of communities, the communication space as a point of a needle towards the community space, and the communicational issue of the European capital of culture programmes. Lastly, the fifth theme belongs to practical and applied philosophy, specifically philosophical counselling, debating issues such as: the identification of the communicational background for this type of counselling, the secular approach to the problem of evil from a philosophical counselling perspective, the discussion of Platon’s attitude towards suicide and of frank speech in the Epicurean school, the socio-anthropological perspective of immortality, as well as the formal approach of the relationship between real and imaginary.
