Full textRare-earth doped fibers are very good candidates to develop short-pulses lasers. Indeed, they exhibit very large optical spectra and, in addition, various methods to achieve passively mode-locking can be used. In this work, we have theoretically investigated a fiber laser passively mode-locked through nonlinear polarization rotation. The laser contains a polarizer placed between two polarization controllers in a unidirectional ring cavity. The model reduces to a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and allows obtaining analytic solutions in the continuous or mode-lock regimes. Unstable regime is also obtained. The orientation of the polarization controllers allows switching from one regime to the other. The model is in very good agreement with the experimental results obtained in the case of the ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber laser. Both the cases of the erbium-doped and the stretched-pulse lasers have been investigated

Full textThe increasing use of surface coatings in fields such as electronic, microelectronic or optic makes the evaluation of their physical properties necessary. For the characterisation of elastic parameters and the thickness determination, the non-destructive ultrasonic testing can be used. More particularly, laser can generate and detect acoustic waves among which Rayleigh waves. The laser-ultrasound technique has the advantage of not requiring contact with the sample to inspect contrary to the conventional piezoelectric methods. In the coated structures, the Rayleigh wave is denatured by the layer and becomes dispersive. Several modes of propagation called Rayleigh modes can be studies. The purpose of this work was to help characterize these structures. A finite element method has been developed too in order to predict the propagation of the first Rayleigh mode. Results obtained by two complementary methods allowing a non-contact measurement in a large bandwidth (frm 5 MHz to 200 MHz) are presented, and the dispersion of the Rayleigh wave propagation velocity is analyzed to determine the thickness and elastic parameters of the considerated layers

Full textAs part of surface treatments with high power of a CO2 laser beam, particularly we were interested to surface melting of sintered ceramic materials to improve mechanical properties. The auxiliary heating apparatus, that we have realized, allows increase to bring sample temperature over 1Z00°C. We have realized melted layers without. Cracks on three oxides alumina, zirconia and mullite. The microstructural, study of melted layers has been done with different technicals of characterization: optical microscopy S. E. M. And X-ray diffraction. This study shows that melted lasers have a dendritic and fine structure. The mechanical properties that result from this microstructure is proving interesting. In the case of alumina and zirconia, the melted layer is harder than the substrate. The hardness depend on grain refinement and the densifying of the melted zone. The apparent value of Young's modulus, measured by dynamic method, is decreasing strongly, particularly in the case of alumina. The fracture toughness KIC of the melted layers are decreased, except for the case of zirconia which shows a clear increase. In the end of this study, we have realized 3 point bending test on alumina treated samples. The fracture strength increases when the treated area is in the tensile state, but decreases in the opposite case

Full textA growing number of applications such as micro-machining of electronical components need high average power in a various range of wavelengths (infrared at 1030 nm, green at 515 nm and ultravioletat 343 nm). These high average power lasers are generally design using a MOPA (MasterOscillator Power Amplifier) scheme. Following this idea, Eolite systems wants to develop its own oscillators since it already masters the different difficulties when trying to reach high average power, especially by using rod-type fibers with a large mode area. The development of high power picosecondfiber oscillators is a essential piece in the global amplification scheme. In the frame of a CIFRE contract between Eolite Systems and the Laboratoire Onde et Matière d’Aquitaine of the Universitéde Bordeaux 1 we have developed different laser oscillators with an average power of more than10 W at a repetition rate of 74 MHz. The pulse duration generated is ranging from 20 ps down to130 fs. The pulsed regime was initiated using non-linear polarization evolution in the fiber and in anormal dispersion laser cavity. This lead to the generation of pulse energies in the range of 150 nJ for the different architectures. We also developed a numerical code in ordre to fully understand the influence of the different elements in the laser cavity. The results are in good agreement with those obtained with the experimental setup

Direct Laser Writing (DLW) has been an exponentially growing research field during the last two decades, by providing an efficient and robust way to directly fabricate three dimensional (3D) structures in transparent materials such as glasses using femtosecond laser pulses. It exhibits many advantages over the lithography technique, which is mostly limited to two dimensional (2D) structuring and involves many fabrication steps. This competitive aspect makes the DLW technique suitable for future technological transfer to advanced industrial manufacturing. Generally, DLW in glasses induces physical changes such as permanent local refractive index modifications that have been classified under three distinct types: (Type I, Type II & Type III). In silver containing glasses with embedded silver ions Ag+, DLW induces the creation of fluorescent silver clusters Agmx+ at the vicinity of the interaction voxel. In this work, we present a new type of refractive index change, called type A occurring in the low pulse energy regime that is based on the creation of the photo-induced silver clusters allowing the creation of new linear and nonlinear optical waveguides in silver containing glasses. Various waveguides, a 50- 50 Y beam splitter, as well as optical couplers, were written based on type A modification inside bulk glasses and further characterized. In addition, a comparitive study between type A and type I waveguides is presented, showing that finely tuning the laser parameters allows the creation of either type A or type I modifications inside silver containing glasses. Finally, based on type A near-surface waveguides, a highly sensitive refractive index sensor is created in a 1 cm glass chip, which could exhibit a pioneer demonstration of double sensing refractive ranges. The waveguiding properties observed and reported in the bulk of such silver containing glasses were transposed to ribbon shaped fibers of the same material. Those results pave the way towards the fabrication of 3D integrated circuits and fiber sensors with original fluorescent, nonlinear and plasmonic properties that are not accessible using the standard type I modification.

Full textEach of the 176 beams of the Laser MégaJoule (LMJ) facility will deliver an energy of 8 kJ at 351 nm, in the nanosecond regime, on a millimeter scale target. This energy density is likely to be absorbed by sub-surface defects induced by the polishing processes. This absorption eventually leads to laser-induced damage sites. These initiated damage sites absorb the laser energy during the subsequent shots and are likely to grow in size. The thick (34mm) optical windows situated after the frequency conversion module are exposed to the highest laser energies at 351nm and are the most sensitive to these phenomena. The goal of this thesis is to study the initiation and growth of damage sites on thick optical components with a laser beam that have similar properties to those of a LMJ beam. Such a beam can be delivered by the MELBA facility which can reach similar energy densities to those that can be found on the LMJ. The beam energy is evenly distributed on a centimeter scale circular aperture and the pulse shape and duration can be defined by the user. Three main axes have been explored in this work. The measurement of damage initiation on thick fused silica optical components have firstly been studied with an accurate metrology of the energy density after the propagation through the optical component, thus taking Kerr small scale self focusing into account. The growth of a population of damage sites have secondly been studied as a function of the laser fluence and pulse duration. Finally, the growth of damage sites up to millimeter scales have been studied

Full textThis thesis is directed at the study of the C02-pumped Mid-Infrared NH3 Chapter 1 gives some spectroscopic data for the ammonia molecule. The influence of an electric field on its rotation-vibration spectrum (Stark effect) is recalled. Chapter II which concerns the off-resonance pumping of NH3 and the development of powerful Raman sources is divided into two parts: In part A the 12 μm local gain is analyzed as a function of the main parameters. The sudy, realization and optimization of a ring CW 12 m Raman laser are described. In part B, a CW Raman amplifier is studied. A first simplified, but analytical propagation model is developed. A second numerical model is elaborated which includes both the transverse intensity profiles (Raman and pump) and the heating effects. Experiments carried out on a 12. 08 μm oscillator-amplifier system confirm the validity of this model. Scaling laws are established for high power systems. Chapter III is related to the frequency tunability of an NH3 laser with population inversion (on-resonance pumping). A rate equation model is established for the small signal gain. Results on Multiline operation and bidirectional emissions are briefly reported. The frequency tunability of the pressure-broadened emissions is inverstigated using a Fox-Smith laser cavity. The Stark tuning of the laser and the realization of a hybrid waveguide are then described. A simple line shape model is developed to interprete the experimental results
