Full text
Abstract:
If you are holding this textbook in your hands, it means that you understand the need to solve problems when studying a physics course at school. Indeed, it is difficult to overestimate the effect that the solution of problems in the study of physics gives. The textbook contains about 800 problems for the high school physics course. The tasks are based on the examination materials of various universities, including the Republic of Crimea, data from the magazines "Kvant", "Physics at School", information received from correspondence physics and mathematics schools of the Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov, National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI", Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State University). We also used the problem books that were released in various years to help those entering universities. The number of problems and their selection are not random and allow, according to the compilers, to demonstrate the types of problems that are often found in the high school physics course, the most rational methods, general approaches and ideas for solving them, and also help to acquire certain skills in solving problems. Can be useful for use in secondary schools when working with students for whom physics is of interest, optional, if you prepare for the entrance exams for physics, a specialized school with advanced study of physics, as well as anyone who wants to learn how to solve problems in physics.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how convergence-related transformations are redefining what it means to be a magazine producer and how this differentiates those who work in magazine production from other individuals, organizations, and industries involved in the production of culture. It considers how these changes are leading to increased demands on workers, interorganizational tensions, and a professional culture that tends to favor certain types of people. It also explores whether this emergent professional culture has the potential to reproduce gender hierarchies and other social inequalities. The chapter suggests that the concurrent trends of multi-skilled labor and consumer co-creative practices in the digital age have resulted in a further deprofessionalization of roles and positions within women's magazines. However, the effects of this deprofessionalization are being felt unevenly across the industry, and decision-making power is firmly locked into traditional organizational hierarchies.

Abstract:
The present volume is the result of many years of research on the letters published in the agony column of Italian weekly magazine "Grazia". The author aims to show the evolution of women's social roles and of the models of femininity in the discourse of press and advice-giving in 20th century Italy, as well as to present the diachronic changes which occurred in the letters themselves. The analysis provides information on women’s interests and problems, the type of content promoted by the magazine and the solutions suggested by the agony aunts, drawing the reader’s attention to the constantly evolving relationship between sender and recipient, symptomatic of the changes that concerned not only the readers of female magazines, but Italian society in general.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the role of fashion as a discursive force in Rosamond Lehmann’s 1932 coming-of-age novel Invitation to the Waltz. Reading the novel alongside such fashion magazines as Vogue, it demonstrates Lehmann’s awareness that 1920s fashion, in spite of its carefully stylized public image as harbinger of originality, emphasized the importance of following preconceived (dress) patterns in the successful construction of modern feminine types. Invitation to the Waltz, it argues, opposes the production of patterned types and celebrates difference and disobedience in its stead. At the same time, the novel’s formal appearance is nonetheless dependent on the very same tenets it criticizes. On closer scrutiny, it is seen to reveal its resemblance to Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927). A tension between imitation and originality determines sartorial fashion choices. This chapter shows that female authorship in the inter-war period was subjected to the same market forces that controlled and sustained the organization of the fashion industry.

Ionitiu, Ionela. English for Civil Engineering. Student's Book. Part II. Editura Universitara, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5682/9786062800642.

Full text
Abstract:
The textbook is a compilation based on the authentic texts adapted from websites and magazines (USA, UK, Canada) and is intended for civil engineering students. One of the aims of this project has been to develop materials both for testing the foreign language competence of civil engineers and for teaching them the language that they need to require for their professional certification. I do not assume that my users will have an in-depth knowledge of civil engineering works. Therefore, the units have been devised to help students improve their knowledge and use of English in an engineering environment. Each unit covers vocabulary related to a certain topic area- ranging from basic civil engineering vocabulary to roads, architecture, bridges, types of foundations and so on- and is designed to reinforce and improve their communicative skills.

Abstract:
Krokodil produced state-sanctioned satirical comments on Soviet and international affairs from 1922 onward. Authored by professional and non-professional contributors, and published by Pravda in Moscow, it became the satirical magazine with the largest circulation in the world. Every Soviet citizen and every scholar of the USSR was familiar with Krokodil as the most significant and influential source of graphic satire in the USSR. This book uses an original framework for reconsidering the forms, production, consumption, and functions of Krokodil magazine. It considers the magazine's content, structures and conventions; it also uses modern cultural and media theory to look beyond content analysis to consider visual language and the performative construction of character. Empirical analysis of Krokodil is thus used to extend and nuance our understanding of Soviet graphic satire beyond state-sponsored propaganda. In several ways, this book challenges existing approaches. It conducts close readings of a large range of different types of cartoons that have not before been discussed in depth, and it does so in ways that reveal new insights. It shows that Krokodil's satire was complex, subtle and intermedial. It highlights the importance of Krokodil's readers' and artists' collaborative exploration and shaping of the boundaries of permissible discourse, and it argues that Krokodil's cartoons simultaneously affirmed, refracted and critiqued official discourses, counterposing them with visions of Soviet citizens' responses. Ideology, Krokodil's satire suggests, is an interpretive tool for negotiating everyday reality and official discourses, and it was not always to be taken seriously.

Abstract:
The chapter analyzes language use in Circuit Noize, a magazine distributed at circuit parties, a type of rave dance party for gay men. The magazine positioned itself as representing the “circuit boy” subculture that developed around circuit parties. The magazine promoted the use of in-group circuit boy slang and awarded prizes for examples of witty camp language overheard at circuit parties. After an overview of circuit subculture, the chapter presents a detailed discussion of the language ideology promoted by the magazine. The language ideology in Circuit Noize served to differentiate circuit boys from other men, both gay and straight. Although the personal style of circuit boy subculture emphasized expressions of masculinity similar to those associated with heterosexual men, the use of language promoted by the magazine serves to differentiate circuit masculinity from heterosexual masculinity.

Full text
Abstract:
Transatlantic Modernism and the US Lecture Tour examines how the US lecture tour served as a vital infrastructure for bringing regional audiences from all across America into direct contact with international modernists. In doing so, the book reroutes scholarly understandings of modernism away from the magazines and other mass media that have so far characterized its circulation and toward the unique form of cultural distribution that coalesced around public lecturing. More specifically, it highlights the role the lecture circuit played in the formation of transatlantic modernism by following a diverse group of international authors—Oscar Wilde, W. B. Yeats, Rabindranath Tagore, Gertrude Stein, and W. H. Auden—on their wide-ranging tours through the American landscape. By analyzing these tours, this study illuminates how this extremely physical form of literary circulation transformed authors into commodities to be sold in a variety of performance venues. Moreover, it shows how these writers responded to such broad distribution by stretching their own ideas about modernist authorship. In this way, Transatlantic Modernism and the US Lecture Tour adds to a critical tradition of revealing the popular dimensions of modernism by demonstrating how the tour’s social diversity forced modernists to take on new, more flexible forms of self-presentation that would allow them to appeal to many different types of audiences.

Abstract:
This chapter traces a rhetorical history of the male computer geeks, engineers, and other high-tech types who came to epitomize autism in the late 1990s. It employs rhetorical analysis of key texts, including Simon Baron-Cohen's book The Essential Difference, a Wired magazine article titled “Silicon Valley Syndrome,” and a series of articles diagnosing Silicon Valley titans such as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates as autistic by drawing on topoi of technology, geekdom, and cognitive capitalism, or the “knowledge economy.” As presented, gendered characters help make a cultural phenomenon seem livelier and more immediate to readers, often in ways that stereotype people—in this case, autistic people—in order to make a larger rhetorical point.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that the ‘tale of terror’ may be read as a form of hybrid ‘medico-popular’ writing to be classed alongside non-fiction medical texts such as Robert Macnish’s The Anatomy of Drunkenness (1827) and The Philosophy of Sleep (1830), as well as one of the most canonical ‘literary’ medical case histories, Thomas De Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1822). The first section introduces Macnish’s first medico-literary project in relation to De Quincey’s Confessions, before moving on to an examination of the development of the tale of terror in relation to the type of popular medical material previously published in monthly magazines and the case history tradition. The chapter closes by discussing the engagement with the genre by three medical contributors to Blackwood’s, the surgeons, Robert Macnish (1802–37), John Howison (1797–1859) and William Dunlop (1792–1848).

Abstract:
Cajal’s last will and testament bequeathed his scientific materials to his disciples at the Cajal Institute and his personal belongings to his family. The mysterious dream book of Santiago Ramón y Cajal was not among the two thousand extant manuscripts; scholars generally assumed that the unpublished work was lost during the Spanish Civil War. In fact, Cajal’s unfinished dream book was not a formal manuscript but, rather, a collection of loose sheets of used paper and notes composed in the margins of newspapers and magazines. It was never formally published as a book. Just before he died, Cajal surreptitiously handed over this material to José Germain Cebrían, who dutifully typed up the scattered diary into a proper manuscript, although Cajal’s calligraphy often was illegible, including numerous errors, deletions, and blank spaces. The dream diary finally surfaced in November of 2014 when Cajal’s work became public domain.

Full text
Abstract:
Through a historical account of a century of Swedish consumer guidance (1900–2012), this chapter provides insights into the development and organizational practices aimed at shaping buyers. The analysis reveals a great variety of organizations acting as guides to consumers, from agricultural societies, savings banks, cooperatives, municipalities, and government agencies to private businesses recently supplemented by private persons acting as bloggers. We scrutinize their methods, ranging from market chats at the kitchen table, teachers’ manuals, and cooperative member magazines, to kitchen standards and monitoring, product labelling, television shows, and blogs. In recent times consumers have been faced with a plethora of advisers and a multitude of advice about how to act in markets. They must know not only how to choose between and within product categories, but also how to choose among consumer guides—a type of ‘meta-advice’—as consumer guidance has turned into a service category in itself.

Esterhammer, Angela. The Improvisation of Poetry, 1750–1850. Edited by George E. Lewis and Benjamin Piekut. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195370935.013.24.

Full text
Abstract:
The “Romantic century” (1750–1850) saw the rise and decline of a distinctive type of improviser: theimprovvisatoreorimprovvisatrice, a solo poet-performer who spontaneously composed verses on subjects assigned by the audience. As this primarily Italian tradition spread across Europe, it generated wide-ranging debates about poetics, aesthetics, and the role of improvisation in political rhetoric and communal leadership. Often this discussion focused on the relationship between modern poetic improvisers and the rhapsodes of classical antiquity, especially Homer. Variations on the questions “Was Homer animprovvisatore?” and “Areimprovvisatorithe descendants of Homer?” show up in antiquarian, poetic, and political discourses, influencing Romantic ideas about the public role of poets while changing the direction of Homeric scholarship. Since the performances of poetic improvisers and the debates they generated took place in the midst of a rapidly expanding culture of periodical magazines and other print media, the reception of orally improvised poetry during the Romantic era also affects the evolving relationship of orality and print.

Bullock, III, Charles S., Susan A. MacManus, Jeremy D. Mayer, and Mark J. Rozell. African American Statewide Candidates in the New South. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197607428.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
African American candidates for statewide office in the United States face unique challenges given the nation’s complicated racial dynamics. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the United States had elected only one African American as governor in its history—L. Douglas Wilder, a grandson of slaves who achieved this historic goal in 1989 in Virginia, once the capital of the Confederacy. Numerous media accounts at the time declared a major breakthrough in racial politics in the United States with one national news magazine actually featuring in bold type on its cover “The End of the Civil War.” More than thirty years since Wilder’s election, while Black candidates have risen to office in states such as Illinois, Massachusetts, and California, there are not many successes for African American candidates seeking statewide office in the South. This is particularly puzzling because Blacks are most numerous in the South, as a percentage of the population. This book includes analyses of the campaigns of mostly unsuccessful and some successful Black statewide candidates in the South. The purpose is to untangle the factors that lead to electoral success for these candidates, and those that continue to hold them back, from the vantage of recent election cycles with some historically close races in the South featuring African American candidates for governor of Florida and Georgia (2018), for lieutenant governor in Virginia (2017), and for the US Senate in South Carolina and Georgia (2020). But statewide contests are not limited to state offices; some of the most important southern campaigns in the twenty-first century have featured Black candidates running in the southern presidential primaries. Most notably, Barack Obama’s 2008 nomination campaign blazed a trail in the South that many believed was a template for a new style of black politics. Examining broader regional demographic and political trends, the authors project that the South is on the threshold of a major breakthrough for African American statewide candidates, which will have a substantial role in not only fundamentally changing the political dynamics of the region, but nationally as well. This change will be driven by not only African American candidates and voters but a rising coalition regionally of minorities and also White voters increasingly willing to vote for Black candidates.
