Abstract:
In this article, the author analyses the phenomenon of myth—a significant element of culture—by presenting miscellaneous types of myths that have accompanied human beings from the dawn of time to the present, interpreting them from the point of view of (for example) philosophy or psychoanalysis, the functions of myths, and their ways of influencing human beings in the contemporary world. Myths are complex cultural phenomena, difficult to assess unambiguously. One of the main reasons is the fact that they are not only holy tales having some religious background; we can also talk about secular myths, for example in art or in sport. As far as our contemporary world—brazenly hi-tech and filled with the spirit of logos—is concerned, it is an interesting fact that myths do not surface but remain hidden, as it were; they are in many cases a subconscious way of seeing things. It depends on the individual whether he or she somehow notices those wisdoms existing somewhere under the mask of the world, industrialized and permeated by unemotional technology as it is. Without a shadow of a doubt, myths fulfil many important functions—they are a wonderful source of wisdom, teach people humility, and give hope and strength in difficult periods. Undoubtedly, they are not—as some people would probably prefer—mere relics of a distant past. The forms of myths may, however, evolve. Looking closely into this phenomenon, one can notice that myths may occur (in different realms of life) in somewhat changed, modernized forms. The author of this article has based his analysis on numerous works of a group of illustrious researchers who specialize in exploring the phenomenon of myth, e.g., among others: Bronisław Malinowski (a Polish anthropologist, one of the most important anthropologists of the 20th century), Mircea Eliade (a Romanian historian of religion, one of the leading interpreters of religious experience), and Sigmund Freud (an Austrian neurologist, founder of the discipline of psychoanalysis).

Abstract:
Indonesia has a new sociological trend about dialectical reconciliations between counter-myths and dominant myths and vice versa (macro-level), and it is reflected semiotically in scenes in three Indonesian horror movies, like Pengabdi Setan, Suzanna Bernapas Dalam Kubur, and Sebelum Iblis Menjemput (micro-level). Sometimes the scenes (in horror movies) contain the collisions between counter-myths and dominant myths (and vice versa), or the scenes show the dialectical reconciliations between both myths. Therefore, this study aims to analyse how the collisions between dominant myths and counter-myths and vice versa are described in three Indonesian horror movies. Sociologically, the semiotic examination shows the trend of the last two types of dialectical reconciliations between Islamic teachings and adultery and between Islamic teachings and corrupt practices, since the first two reconciliations have been explained in another manuscript. Also, there are four motives why people adopt counter-myths, like (1) the treasure (harta), (2) the political position (takhta), (3) the romance (asmara), and (4) the sexual pleasure (kesenangan seksual). In contrast, there are two motives why people go back to re-adopting dominant myths, like (1) regret (penyesalan) and (2) safety (keamanan). Moreover, the study discusses the draft of the new Postmillennial Gothic, which rehabilitates and beautifies Indonesian demonic characters to fight criminals who practice the dialectical reconciliation between dominant myth and counter-myth. Finally, it is possible to apply this idea in Indonesia because there are cultural and sociological situations that support its implementation. Keywords: Counter-myth, dominant myth, dialectical reconciliations, film model, semiotics.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the concept of the “foundation myth” in the context of historical politics. A number of overlapping concepts are analyzed that describe historical narratives that act as symbolic boundaries of ethnic and national identities. It is shown that the basic meaning of the concept of “foundation myth” had a narrower meaning, describing myths about the moment of the emergence of groups and political systems. Later, the context of the concept was expanded by Russian authors, who included in it the idea of the role of wars and revolutions in the formation of collective identity. An alternative research approach focuses on ethnogenetic myths about great ancestors. Within the framework of ethnosymbolism, the idea of “myths of origin” is developing, linking the past and present of modern nations through genealogical and ideological types of values. The broadest concept is the “constitutive myth”, which covers the totality of myths of the foundation of a separate national state. Within the framework of historical policy, it is important to identify the substantiating and counter-representative type of myths that describe different strategies for connecting the past and the present in historical narratives. As the analysis of examples shows, military narratives define most of the plots, which allows us to conclude that they play a central role in encoding cultural representations of identity. Most of the analyzed concepts describe the conflict of founding myths within states as a choice of the trajectory of national identity and ways of further development.

Abstract:
A common perception is that police officers hold very negative attitudes about rape victims. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to establish whether police officers do accept stereotypical rape myths at a higher level compared to members of other populations. There were 3 comparison samples, composed of police officers, law students, and psychology students, that completed the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance scale. Male and female police officers accepted “she lied” myths at a higher level than the student samples. Student samples were found to accept 2 types of rape myths (“she asked for it” and “he didn’t meant to”) at a higher level compared to police officers. No significant differences were found in the other 4 subfactors. Therefore, the pattern of results suggests that police officers do not adhere to stereotypical myths about rape victims more than do other populations.

Abstract:
The article shows that the consideration of myth as a type of the apprehension of the world makes it possible to explain the anthropological necessity of myth, manifested in its "omnipresence", and to distinguish terminologically different types of myths that appear when one or another type of world perception dominates. A distinction is made between the analytical and mythopoetic types of world perception, the main characteristics of the mythopoetic type of world perception, the causes and features of the manifestation of the otherness of the myth in analytical culture and society are analyzed. The conclusion is made about the unavoidability of the mythological as a necessary element of human perception of the world and culture, and a distinction is established between the myths proper, characteristic of mythopoetic culture, and quasi-myths existing in the culture of the analytical type.

Abstract:
This study examines myth as an ideological component of extremism. The objective is to define the role and meaning of myths in extremist activities. Extremism is a socio-cultural and political phenomenon of modern culture, expressed in actions against the foundations of the constitutional order and public security. Myths contribute to the formation of a holistic picture of the world, to the construction of an alternative social reality, and the creation of models of thinking and behavior that correspond to the goals and objectives of extremist organizations. The research methodology is based on the theories of myth by A. Losev and M. Eliade, on the phenomenological approach of P. Berger and T. Luckmann to the construction of reality, on the cognitive features proposed by A. Kruglanski, and the interpretation of deviance by J. Gilinsky. Extremist behavior is a form of deviance, expressing in the committing of non-normative actions that threaten the stability of society and activate the mechanisms of social control. Extremist thinking is the result of psychological construction, which arose on the basis of the unnatural functioning of the cognitive system. Extremist ideologies contain myths about the future ideal state and/or society, heroes, and legendary personalities, as well as eschatological myths. Essentially, these myths do not differ from the myths inherent in other types of activity and socio-cultural phenomena. However, they contribute to extremism by demonstrating acceptable and unacceptable norms of behavior as exemplified by some legendary personalities; interpretation of historical events and processes of social reality following the political goals of organizations; creation and transmission of relevant ideas and values; the formation of identity and a sense of exclusivity among extremists. Abstract:
Seeing a social sign, results in striving to derive the meaning from the sign when it is used. One of the events that appear in various types of social sign is a disaster. It creates various myths that also act as a social sign; one of them is a myth about the relationship between humans and nature. This study aims to explain the perception of the local community in the Sumber Mujur village of Semeru Mountain Slope about social signs made as myth post-disaster eruption in 2022. The myth that is believed by the local community proved to have relevance to ecological sustainability. This research uses qualitative methods through deep interviewing technique. Informants in this study are a local community in the Semeru Mountain area, East Java which is part of the 2021 Semeru eruption survivors. Based on existing findings, most myths grow in line with a scientific view. Although the background or ways of working is different, myth and logos have compatible relevance in the context of ecology sustainability. This study concludes that myths give impact on society’s attitude so as to maintain ecological sustainability, as well as a form of cultural adaptation, both in terms of conservation awareness and mitigation.

Abstract:
Background. This article discusses the thematic types of Uzbek folk legends and myths and their reflection in translation. The names of the genres of myths and legends, their artistic compositional features, scientific and theoretical views on the development and evolution of the genre are described. Successes and shortcomings in the translation of myths and legends in Uzbek and English are substantiated by sufficient evidence. In myths, motifs and images interpreted on the basis of primitive religious-mythological views of ancient people, such as animistic, totemistic, shamanistic, fetishistic, magical, attract attention with their "planetary" migration. It is reported that some mythical motifs and images were later incorporated into fairy tales and epics. Marilyn Petersen's book "Treasury of Uzbek Legends and Lore" contains translations of more than 20 Uzbek folk tales. The article provides feedback on these. Research methods and materials. Among the legends translated from Uzbek to English so far, there are more translations of toponymical and historical legends. Because abroad, people are especially interested in the geographical location of our country, the nature of paradise, the bravery and courage of our brave and courageous ancestors. It should be noted that legends are created in a simple and concise form, such as myths, legends, narrations, in a short and concise volume. It is observed that not only their content, but also their simple and concise form made it convenient for translators and led to the translation of many samples. Because the shorter the text, the easier it is to understand and translate. Results and discussions. Legends, like legends, are one of the most ancient, traditional and widespread genres of Uzbek folklore. They also serve the purpose of informing the listener about any information. In that sense, they are like legends. Again, they stand close to the legends even with the simple and straightforward construction of the plot. Only they do not have an interpretation of unusual, supernatural events. Also, the events described in the legends take place within a historically specific time frame. Conclusion. So, like other phenomena, folklore samples have their own typological features, roots of historical origin. In particular, among them are works in the genre of myths and legends, formed on the basis of real events in the history of the nation, the events of life. After all, they are characterized by the encounter of real images, vitality and history. Therefore, the artistic-aesthetic and educational significance of such folklore samples is high.

Abstract:
Arsène Lupin, Maurice Leblanc’s character born in 1905, is the figure of the gentleman-thief. But, is this expression, create by the author, the own property of the character or is it a new term for a new literary type? By the observation of the literary origins of the character, of the authors potential inspiration ; by the study of Lupin’s heirs, I try to define if the Leblanc’s character is a new type, original, and, further, underscore the deep originality of Arsène Lupin. An existence of hundred years cant have tailing off the audiences interest for the gentleman-thief, and through the study of the character, of his predecessors (Hornung’s Raffles, Darien’s George Randal), of his heirs (Roger-Francis Didelot’s Samsom Clairval, José Moselli’s baron Stromboli and John Strobbins, Stanislas-André Steeman’s Silas Lord), I want to underline that Lupin is unique, powerful, a myth constantly evolving

Abstract:
The collection of work presented under this title is directed to a single question, that of mimesis, taken as a decisive ontological question and thereby elevated to the rank of a question belonging to "first philosophy. " consequently, the elaboration and then the treatment of this question imply a procedure which, in undertaking to deconstruct the classical mimetology of philosophy (that is to say, the theory of "imitation"), necessarily takes a distance (along its limits) from a philosophical manner of proceeding. It is not a matter of re-evaluating mimesis by simply countering its traditional devaluation from at least the time of plato (excepting a few rare cases). It is a matter of rethinking, according to the most dissimulated logic of truth (of aletheia), the essence of what greek thought has more or less clearly determined, up to the present, as techne-that is to say, indissociable from one another, art and technique (or, in another register, language and knowledge). This deconstruction of mimetology draws upon the heideggerian deconstruction. This is why it does its work in the texts of the "philosophical" or "literary" tradition : platon and aristote, diderot and holderlin, hegel and freud, baudelaire (or mallarme) and nietzsche. But it takes into its movement heidegger's thought itself, which is necessarily implicated, for reasons that are at once aesthetic, philosophical, and political, in the mimetology that it pretends to delimit. And thus, it is on the basis of a late remark by heidegger concerning the mutation of european onto-theology in the modern domain of nihilism and of the "death of god" that the hypothesis was proposed concerning an "onto-typology" latent in metaphysics since plato and awaiting only the (relatively) recent emancipation of the subject to establish, following the politico-technical (or aesthetic) procedures systematized in our time, the examples or models - the "types" - that now govern in humanity's pretention to world hegemony : the worker, the soldier, the subject of desire. In this perspective, the nazi movement - in which heidegger implicated himself with hardly any explanation - appears as "revelatory" of the political destiny of metaphysics

This thesis focuses on the ideological workings of Germany’s main public diplomacy organization, the Goethe-Institut. Drawing upon his experience doing fieldwork at the Goethe-Institut in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and employing discourse and semiotic analysis, the author identifies four ideological currents within the organization. Relating these currents to four specific interest groups for which the Goethe-Institut is a strategic point of operation, and examining their complex interrelation, allows for an analysis of how their interplay at once constructs, deconstructs and reconstructs the notion of the German Nation.

The aim of this study is to identify, map and understand the anthropology – the science of man – that can be distinguished in foreign news pages in Swedish daily papers. Concepts of nationality, ethnicity and gender are crucial parameters in this anthropology. Foreign news can be regarded as a textual system in which form and content interact to create its own object of knowledge: the Other, or rather, the Others. Thus, the relationship between foreign news as a textual system and foreign news as anthropology is central to this dissertation.

The years 1987, 1995 and 2002 have been selected for examination on the following grounds: 1987 belongs to the cold war era; 1995 belongs to the post-cold war era, and is also the year when Sweden joined the EU; and 2002 belongs to the era defined by the events of September 11 2001. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of a total of 1,162 foreign news articles published during one week in each year, was carried out. The qualitative analysis consists mainly of discourse analysis. Foucault’s discourse theory constitutes the theory of knowledge in the study. It is combined with Barthes’ theory on myths as well as postcolonial and other theories on nationality, ethnicity and gender and the representation of these aspects in journalism and elsewhere.

Discourse type is a central concept in the analysis. Discourse types resemble subgenres, but are specifically defined by certain perspectives. Other defining aspects are voices, style, mode of address and closeness/distance to an event/a development. Seven discourse types that constitute the order of the discourse in foreign news pages were identified in this study: On location narratives, Elite event reports, Catastrophe event reports, Situation reports, Commentaries, Picture paragraphs and Quotation paragraphs. The representation of different regions of the world, of different nationalities and ethnicities, and of men and women, are related to these discourse types throughout the study.

The anthropology of foreign news establishes vast differences between people. These differences depend on regions, spheres in society, gender and skin colour. They also depend on the textual setting, i.e. the discourse type. Some regions, like Western Europe, USA, the Middle East and North Africa, are always centred. Others, like South America and parts of Africa, are practically ignored. Women are also ignored, hence “othered” by exclusion. When women do appear, this occurs in discourse types which exoticize them concerning gender as well as nationality/ethnicity. Women with darker skin are generally more negatively represented, compared to “white” women. The ruling groups, normally represented by men, appear as quite alike around the world. They are not exoticized and generally speak for themselves. However, powerful men from the Middle East and North Africa and from the (former) Soviet Union are treated differently and represented as threats, sometimes even as tabooed.

All these aspects stand out as relatively stable during the research period. Differences in the order of discourse consist mainly of an increase of exoticizing perspectives and of the use of pictures — both of which correspond to a relative increase of women — and of a simultaneous decrease of plain, scanty reports and increase of explicitly subjective articles. International aspects also increase over the years. However, this undermining of the hegemony of the nation on the foreign news pages, still exists within the discourse of the nation. The idea of the nation still limits the understanding of the world. In a similar way, the explicitly subjective articles increase within the discourse of journalistic objectivity. This is an interesting and thought-provoking paradox in the genre of foreign news.

Abstract:
Corrosion and corrosion prevention all have maintenance challenges and associated costs. The cost of preventative maintenance (which includes equipment), the cost of repair/overhaul and the potential cost of engine component mechanical breakdown that is due to corrosion. Ultimately, the benefits of having an intimate understanding of how corrosion occurs can lead to the correct decision making when participating in corrosion prevention measures. This paper will focus on the different types of operating environment, the types of internal and external corrosion, the materials and coatings used, the documented effects of good versus poor maintenance practices and the dispelling of some of the myths regarding maintenance philosophies in the different operational environments.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper challenges the current industry practice of specifying very low levels of residual soluble salts prior to permitting coating application. The paper provides antidotal information based on the practical experience of one of the authors and empirical data to support the position of the authors that the industry has defaulted to specifying very low levels in many instances where there is no science to support the specified levels. The paper evaluates general specified industry thresholds residual soluble salt concentrations at which it is commonly believed that salts begin to have a detrimental effect on coating performance. The analysis method used takes into consideration different factors such as type of service, coating type and surface preparation. The paper reviews historical practices and the evolution of current practices in the light of the science (or lack thereof) to support these practices. A cost/benefit analysis demonstrates the need for a more practical approach than industry has been led to believe.

Abstract:
Abstract Archaeological digs have found many types of knives, with varying quality of steel and microstructure. Typically, these steels are carbon steels with carbon contents on the order of 0.60%. Historically, there have been many myths concerning the quenchants used by ancient blacksmiths in the heat treatment of swords and knives. Various liquids have been cited in the archaeometallurgical literature as quenchants. Each of these quenchants is supposed to extend to the knife special and even mythical properties. However, none have been examined for cooling curve behavior. In this paper, various quenchants are examined for typical heat transfer, and microstructure is predicted for simple steels commonly used in ancient knife making.

Abstract:
In the era of universal and compulsory education, in which attention is paid to the ability to think scientifically, there should be no room for unscientific views. However, unscientific theories often appear in the media, and they find numerous supporters. Therefore, it was decided to investigate which of the common beliefs about the "chemical vs. natural" pair are believed by Poles. And whether belief in unscientific myths depends on gender, age, level of education or its type. Checking these relationships will allow, inter alia, to evaluate the effectiveness of science education in Poland. Within 4 years, the beliefs of 2,473 people were examined. The obtained results show that the universality of education does not prevent misconceptions. There was also no correlation between the correctness of the answers to the questions on age, gender, education level or its type. It seems that the way science is taught should be completely modified in such a way that students can distinguish truth from myth. Keywords: science misconceptions, common beliefs, fake news

Full text
Abstract:
Significant research on Arctic sea ice trends and the potential for resource development have been well documented and illustrated as drivers for changes to Arctic shipping traffic patterns. There is a strong awareness of the potential risks to the environment such as an oil spill in ice as well as impacts on traditional human activity. Similarly, there is awareness that there will be a demand for increased navigation services such as aids to navigation, charting and emergency response capacity. However, many questions remain about what impact sea ice trends and resource development have had on shipping and accidents. To date, the Arctic Marine Shipping Assessment (AMSA) project has provided a snapshot of Arctic shipping traffic patterns and activity for the year 2004 and suggests a further research opportunity exists to conduct a trend analysis of shipping activity. The AMSA report suggests that “As marine activity continues to expand in the Arctic, statistical trends indicate that the potential risk of vessel mishaps and marine pollution incidents also increases” (Arctic Council, 2009). However, this is not necessarily the case where risks are managed. Accident trends in the Canadian Arctic suggest that safety management, vessel design and navigation experience have had positive impacts and one must look more closely at specific areas of operation, vessel types and activity to identify opportunities to improve risk management including both prevention and response. So the question remains “What can we learn from recent trends in vessel traffic and accident rates to better understand potential navigation impacts in the future?” Using the AMSA Shipping Database (Arctic Council, 2009) and a spatial trend analysis of Canadian Arctic shipping traffic and vessel accident rates covering the period 1987 to 2008, this paper will report on preliminary findings, show where accident rates are increasing and decreasing, provide traffic trends for each Shipping Safety Control Zone, help to dispel a few myths, and possibly confirm other rumours.

The article is devoted to the study of modern forms of national consciousness in the Altai Mountains. The main stages of formation of the national consciousness of the Altaians are indicated: religious, formation of national intelligentsia and ethnosophical. The modern ethnosophical stage is characterised by new forms of mythologisation, corresponding to the archaisation of both life and consciousness: the revival of the institution of zaisanatstvo, national holidays, clothing and cuisine, the creation of ethnopolitical myths, the reduction of history and the appropriation of the heritage of archaeological cultures. It is noted that ethnosophy, claiming to create a “national philosophy”, nevertheless remains a type of mythological thinking.

Abstract:
The context of the COVID -19 pandemic placed e-learning in the mainstream, to prove its usefulness and efficiency, but it also brought to the fore the shortcomings of this type of alternative learning. Previous educational concerns have generally focused on improving online learning platforms, on the development and improvement of digital applications - in general, on technical aspects, inherent to the development of learning processes. The issues of Internet connection, user-friendly interfaces, educational platforms' security are further intensely addressed - as well as technical issues. But real practice during the pandemic has brought out additional aspects: psychological issues, such as adapting to new learning conditions; picking up new teaching and learning methods; understanding the differences between online and face-to-face education, and pedagogical ones, regarding content delivery and evaluation methods. To these problems few or no solutions have yet been found, despite the intense and widely publicized efforts made in this respect. In our opinion, however, an important cause of the e-learning failures is the mindset inertia of the actors involved in institutionalized education. On the one hand, the transition from face-to-face education to online learning was too rapid, which meant that all actors involved made the switch, without having a choice or time to adapt. On the other hand, those involved imagined that e-learning could fully replace traditional learning, and that the transition would simply mean a conversion of the communication environment and not a complex rethinking of educational paradigms. We believe that people have actually ignored that each communication medium has its own strategies for efficiently conveying the messages and for obtaining adequate feedback. We also believe that the relational aspect among advanced technologies and the expectations of the actors involved, of students, teachers, and especially decision-makers, was given too little attention.

Ferguson, Thomas, and Servaas Storm. Myth and Reality in the Great Inflation Debate: Supply Shocks and Wealth Effects in a Multipolar World Economy. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp196.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper critically evaluates debates over the causes of U.S. inflation. We first show that claims that the Biden stimulus was the major cause of inflation are mistaken: the key data series – stimulus spending and inflation – move dramatically out of phase. While the first ebbs quickly, the second persistently surges. We then look at alternative explanations of the price rises. We assess four supply side factors: imports, energy prices, rises in corporate profit margins, and COVID. We argue that discussions of COVID’s impact have thus far only tangentially acknowledged the pandemic’s far-reaching effects on labor markets. We conclude that while all four factors played roles in bringing on and sustaining inflation, they cannot explain all of it. There really is an aggregate demand problem. But the surprise surge in demand did not arise from government spending. It came from the unprecedented gains in household wealth, particularly for the richest 10% of households, which we show powered the recovery of aggregate US consumption expenditure especially from July 2021. The final cause of the inflationary surge in the U.S., therefore, was in large measure the unequal (wealth) effects of ultra-loose monetary policy during 2020-2021. This conclusion is important because inflationary pressures are unlikely to subside soon. Going forward, COVID, war, climate change, and the drift to a belligerently multipolar world system are all likely to strain global supply chains. Our conclusion outlines how policy has to change to deal with the reality of steady, but irregular supply shocks. This type of inflation responds only at enormous cost to monetary policies, because it arises mostly from supply-side difficulties that require targeted solutions. But when supply plummets or becomes more variable, fiscal policy also has to adapt: existing explorations of ways to steady demand over the business cycle have to embrace much bolder macroeconomic measures to control over-spending when supply is temporarily constrained.
