Abstract:
Abstract This article investigates the beginnings of Arabic typographic composition with typesetting machinery. It discusses different claims in literature of the first instance of mechanical composition and juxtaposes them with findings from original research in archives of typesetting machinery manufacturers active at the beginning of the twentieth century. Based on this evidence, it suggests a new account of the development and use of the first Arabic casting machine. The article raises geographical and socio-cultural aspects that provided the circumstances for this development and re-situa

Accurate recognition of handwritten mathematical expressions has proven difficult due to their two-dimensional structure. Various machine-learning techniques have previously been employed to transcribe handwritten math, including approaches based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and larger encoder/decoder-based models. In this work, we explore a CNN-based method for transcribing handwritten math expressions into the typesetting language known as LaTeX. This approach utilizes machine learning not only for classifying individual characters but also for extracting individual characters fro

Abstract:
A discourse, according to Alan Sekula, is "an arena of information exchange, that is a system of relations between parties engaged in communicative activity."1 Sekula immediately qualifies his definition by pointing out that "the notion of discourse is a notion of limits," and arguing that "it is this limiting function that determines the very possibility of meaning." In the capacity of testing the acceptable limits of any possible subject, jokes often reveal contradictions or ambivalent feelings about the meaning of power relations. This seems especially true about jokes involving sexual or e

In The World Is Not a Desktop, Marc Weisner, the principal scientist and manager of the computer science laboratory at Xerox PARC, stated that, “a good tool is an invisible tool.” Weisner cited eyeglasses as an ideal technology because with spectacles, he argued, “you look at the world, not the eyeglasses.” Although Weisner’s work at PARC played an important role in the creation of the field of “ubiquitous computing”, his ideal is widespread in many areas of technology design. Through repetition, and by design, technologies blend into our lives. W

The move from analog distribution to online digital delivery is common in the contemporary mediascape. Music is in the midst of an ipod driven paradigm shift (Levy), television and movie delivery is being reconfigured (Johnson), and newspaper and magazines are confronting the reality of the world wide web and what it means for business models and ideas of journalism (Beecher). In the midst of this change, the book publishing industry remains defiant. While embracing digital production technologies, the vast majority of book content is still delivered in material form, printed and shipped the o

Abstract:
Local weekly newspapers in market towns, or serving localities in large urban centres, were usually produced, alongside local-interest journals and a few books, in general printing offices which served the local businesses and community: John Cossar & Son of Govan is an example of this type of printing office. The firm had its origins in the 1870s, and later became the publisher of local weekly newspapers in Glasgow. John’s son, Thomas, invented the ‘Cossar Patent Flat Bed Web Newspaper Printing Machine’ in 1899. The machine used the existing skills and typesetting equipment available in every letterpress printers, but was reel- (or web-) instead of sheet-fed, keeping small circulation local weekly newspapers viable with a technology that remained unchallenged for fifty years.
