Abstract:

Only two percent of new books released in Germany are professionally edited for visually impaired people. However, more and more print publications are made available to the public in digital formats through online content delivery platforms like “libreka!”. The automatic conversion of such contents into DAISY would considerably increase the number of publications available in accessible formats. Still, most data available on “libreka!” is published as non-tagged PDF. In this paper, we examine the potential for automatic conversion of “libreka!”-based content into DAISY, while also analyzing the potentials and limitations of current conversion tools.

Abstract:

This thesis presents a survey of type design during the period 1987 to 1997, the decade after the widespread adoption of device-independent digital type design and typesetting software. Prompted by technological innovation, this study explores the ways in which the new technologies of type have changed type design practice. Throughout this text there is an emphasis on the cultural and economic circumstances of type design; the examination of the influence of technology on design practice is reconciled with the recognition of the broader context of that practice. Each of the four chapters that make up the body of this thesis concentrates on the design of type within a specific geographical region: The West and East Coasts of America, London and the.Netherlands. All of these locations are proposed as centres of significant contemporary type design activity. Dealing with these regions in series of distinct chapters, it is suggested that the practice of type design is not uniform across the globe, but is, in part, a product of local culture. While it is acknowledged that digital communications technologies are most likely to be used to promote globalisation, within this thesis the emphasis is on the ways in which those technologies allow the pursuit of the small-scale and the local. This thesis is original in scope; the subject of digital type design has been explored within dissertations written by graphic design students as part of undergraduate or graduate design degrees, but there has been no other sustained research into the subject at this level. Equally it is original in nature; drawing not only from the models of typographic history, but also from those of design history and cultural studies, this thesis stands apart from the body of writing that already exists on the subject. It is hoped that this text will contribute to the understanding of recent type design practice and will also indicate new paths of research into type design and typography.

Abstract:

L'avvento dei moduli CSS specifici per la creazione di documenti nel formato di stampa, i paged media, ha riscosso grande attenzione per la possibilità di estendere le funzionalità dei linguaggi cardini del web anche alla carta stampata. Lo stato delle specifiche è tutt’ora in working draft, molte delle funzionalità non sono state implementate su tutti i browser e i moduli sono applicati solo quando viene aperta la finestra di dialogo “stampa”. La libreria Paged.js permette di rappresentare direttamente sulla finestra di browser il flusso di testo descritto in HTML con un page layout, facendo polyfill dei moduli di stampa CSS, forzando le specifiche. In questo progetto di tesi il framework viene ampliato con una tecnica di fitting per adattare il testo alla pagina tenendo conto di vincoli tipografici d’armonia e qualità dell’impaginato. L’algoritmo, che chiameremo Fitting Algorithm, si basa sulla scelta di una sequenza di flusso ottimale basata su un punteggio stabilito dalle posizioni di page break. Nell’elaborato verranno inizialmente descritti i moduli di CSS per il page layout: Paged Media, Fragmentation, Generated Content, Page floats. In seguito, si andrà a esplorare il funzionamento di Paged.js, troveremo i limiti che presenta la libreria su cui si porranno le basi per l’algoritmo di fitting. Analizzeremo le caratteristiche principali che governano l’algoritmo come: i vincoli tipografici da rispettare, le soluzioni applicabili e il punteggio, cuore dell’algoritmo. Nel capitolo successivo, scenderemo più nel dettaglio andando ad analizzare la struttura a blocchi dell’algoritmo e alcune funzioni interessanti. Valuteremo anche la sua efficacia ed efficienza con una serie di comparazioni tra l’utilizzo di Paged.js senza e con l’implementazione dell’algoritmo di fitting. Dimostrando come i limiti evidenziati siano stati effettivamente superati ed elencando nuovi obiettivi per il futuro e possibili estensioni.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine whether three typeface variations of dot matrix print [single density, dual density, and photocopied dot matrix type] and two formatting variations [fully justified and left justified] had any effect on the reading rates or reading comprehension of college students when compared to the same typewritten material. A pretest/posttest design with experimental and control groups utilized the Cloze Reading Test and the Nelson Denny Reading Test to measure reading comprehension and reading rates respectively to college students [N= 240]. Subjects were randomly assigned to the groups to test the effects of the six treatment levels and two control groups of the independent variables [typefaces and type formatting] on the dependent variables [reading comprehension and reading rates. Four test sessions were used to collect the data and answer the research question: Do either of the three typeface variations of dot matrix print or the two formatting variables have any effect on reading comprehension or reading rates of the subjects when compared to typewriter type? A factorial analysis of covariance [p. < .05] was used to analyze reading comprehension; and a two way analysis of variance [p. < .05] was used to analyze reading rates. The findings indicated that typefaces or formatting made no significant difference in the reading rate or reading comprehension scores of the subjects tested. Ph. D.

Abstract:

The significant role of the female printer in the American home-based print shops during the colonial and early republic periods has been documented in print history, socioeconomic, labor, and women studies, yet with the industrialization of the printing trade, women’s presence is thought to have disappeared. Contrary to the belief that industrialization of the print shop eradicated women’s involvement in skilled employments such as typesetting, the creation of the Women’s Cooperative Printing Union in California and the creation and chartering of the Women’s Typographical Union in New York, both in the late 1860s, clearly indicate that women continued to work in printing. The assumption that industrialization brought with it the unionization of the trade denies the possibility of non-union shops, as well as the continuation of home-based businesses across the ever-expanding nation as it moved westward. This research has sought to uncover and restore to history women who have been involved in the trade from the early transition of the home shop at the beginning of the 1800s to the signing of the WTU charter in 1869 by union employed compositors, as well as to identify establishments that hired female compositors. Digital newspaper databases have been used as a means of locating both women and opportunities available to them in the American printing trade between 1800 to 1869. Several women significant to this history, both those who have been found to be employed as compositors/typesetters and those who created opportunities for the employment of trained women compositors/typesetters, are discussed.

碩士 崑山科技大學 資訊管理研究所 107 The trend of publishing industry varies with user demands recently, i.e., components were converted into a publishing product, the constants change existed for a work assembled with numerous components in the development process. In the tedious process of publishing, various contents are generated, such as creativity, ingenuity, design, aesthetics, etc. Before the AI technology is matured, human’s design efforts are still the most crucial for publishing products, i.e., it still needs a lot of skills of an expertise, design layout for multimedia, typesetting and so on. Especially, the multimedia design is regarded as one of the important role in the professional publishing process. Generally, the multimedia design industry is preceded by scattered SOHO studios where task management is not a problem; nonetheless the development of a certain scale of enterprises has faced a large number of personnel and working hour management problems. The project management model is designed to solve this problem by proposing alternative solutions and management platform to actually participate in the real publishing cases. In our developed project, a useful work planning system is incorporated into the project management for publishing Corp. which effectively assist company managers to accurately estimate project times and costs in different phases, and evaluate accurate working hours; cost needed, personnel efficiency, and delayed project controls, etc shifting from passive management to proactive approach .

High-quality typesetting system LaTeX by the American computer scientist Leslie Lamport in 1984 to develop, many of the world's leading academic institutions will LaTeX typesetting format as the standard document formats. For xample: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) journal and relevant a thesis are LaTeX documents as the first choice; American Mathematical Society (AMS) publications to which all documents are required to use LaTeX typesetting, and provides its style template file. Although LaTeX mainly used in research reports and papers typesetting, but used to make other books are also a satisfactory finished product, the purpose of this study is to: through to LaTeX typesetting software, editing suitable mathematics textbooks for high school students to read and used in class, and mathematics test paper typesetting and answers design. No campo da Tradução Audiovisual, há um tipo de legendagem menos convencional e menos conhecido que o profissional: o fansubbing. A presente dissertação tem como objetivo rever literatura a respeito desta forma de legendagem, complementá-la, oferecer uma perspetiva mais atualizada e enquadrá-la à realidade portuguesa. Neste processo, são expostas certas características heterogéneas dentro do fansubbing, são apresentados os métodos de trabalho dos fansubbers (organização, meios técnicos, técnicas de legendagem, etc.) e é analisada a sua qualidade resultante, demonstrando-a em última instância através do estudo de dois casos concretos do fansubbing português. A par com isto, são quebradas possíveis ideias preconcebidas sobre o fansubbing e é chamada a atenção para as suas inovações e/ou vantagens face à legendagem convencional. In the field of Audiovisual Translation, there is a type of subtitling that is less conventional and less known than the professional one: fansubbing. This dissertation aims to review literature on this form of subtitling, to complement it, to offer a more up-to-date perspective, and to contextualize it within the Portuguese reality. In the process, certain heterogeneous characteristics within fansubbing are laid out, the fansubbers' methodologies are presented (organization, technical means, subtitling techniques, etc.) and their resulting quality is analyzed, which is ultimately demonstrated through the study of two specific cases from Portuguese fansubbing. Along with this, possible preconceptions associated with fansubbing are debunked and attention is drawn to its innovations and/or advantages over conventional subtitling. Theoretical part describes the origin and development of book printing and printed Latin script - proces of type casting and typesetting. Then, the life Johannes Gutenberg is briefly described. The information was partially ontains printed graphical compositions created using wooden letters for script printing in combination with two other graphical techniques of printing from height - monotype and linocut. The part of this work became the experimenting with graphical creative means.

碩士 國立中央大學 中國文學研究所 100 Shuo Wen Jie Zi is an original the Eastern Han dictionary compiled by Hsu Shen. This dictionary analyses each Chinese character’s course of the form, the phonetic, and the meaning systematically. It not only retraces the source of the Chinese script but also contains much useful information about pronunciation and culturology to assist the research of philology. That it purposes unifying Chinese characters form and classifying them by recognized components is increasing the model and standard work of characteristics. For this reason Shuo Wen Jie Zi is a monumental literary work in the history of Chinese philology. In order to improve compatriots’ language ability and artistic appreciation, Shuo Wen Jie Zi is worthy to do further study and export its cultural connotations. However, in consideration of the universal modern computers and network, that information digitizing replaces compatriots’custom of written language. It causes the problem that the ability of Chinese characterictics is becoming worse and worse, which will be the secret worry about the cultural heritage. Chinese characters are the basic carriers of the traditional culture and as our national major cultural treasures. But then that the study of Chinese traditional characters ususally create an impression of dreariess and abstruseness leads to the lower learning attitude even the Chinese literature undergraduates. Therefore, the author put forward three plans for improving this problem. First, displaying the aroma of the ideographic writing system by illustrations made by Computer Graphics enhances people’s interest. Second, reviewing the defects of our current character index ways searches the best method of character index. Third, bring up schemes for reediting Shuo Wen Jie Zi adds to its advantage of abundant and methodical typesetting. In general, the cultural heritage is the ultimate ideal.
