Abstract:
In this paper, I review the Thanks for Typing conference held at Oxford University in March 2019, which explored the experiences of women who worked as literary helpmeets for famous men. I also give some details from the papers presented there. In my paper ‘“Jumped-up Typists”: Two secretaries who became guardians of the flame’, I discussed how two literary wives, Sophia Mumford (1899–1997), wife of the American historian and philosopher Lewis Mumford, and Valerie Eliot (1926–2012), second wife of T. S. Eliot, found their identities in supporting, and later defending, their husbands’ work. I a

The aim of this study was to discuss the new methods of clinical classification and staging of patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) proposed by our group and to summarize the experiences of surgical treatment of MG with a novel incision by cutting the sternum cross-sectionally at the second intercostal level. A retrospective analysis was made for the clinical data from the patients with MG who underwent thymectomy from July 1988 to May 2009. The surgical procedures were designed into three groups, a group with Osserman classification and median incision of the sternum (Group 1), a group with M

Abstract:
This article presents a qualitative, interpretivist research study that documents the emergence, in the context of typed expression, of increasingly useful and reliable speech for a young person labeled with autism. The authors construct a descriptive narrative of the process of this young man's emergent speech development and organize the data around four components of this complex, dynamic, and nonlinear process: (a) echolalia or “unreliable” speech, (b) reading out loud, (c) using reliable speech, and (d) integrating speaking and typing. Additionally, the authors identify three categories o

State-of-the-art tools for creating augmented reality (AR) applications often depend on a specific programming language and the deployed target devices. The typing syntax of a program is error-prone, and device dependency makes it difficult to share newly created AR applications. This paper presents BlocklyAR, a novel web-based visual programming interface for creating and generating an AR application. This tool is intended for non-programmers (young learners and enthusiasts) who are interested in making an AR application. The goals of this tool are: (1) to help young learners and enthusiasts

The study compared maturation rate and endocrine functioning according to career typicalness in a sample of 28 currently employed women. Previously reported research from which this sample was drawn had indicated less traditional sex-typing for subjects in a typical careers for personal and psychological characteristics and childhood experiences. Analysis of current data pertaining to subjects' developmental history provided only limited evidence that women in nontraditional careers matured later than women in traditional occupations as hypothesized. Although the interaction technology for virtual reality (VR) systems has evolved significantly over the past years, the text input efficiency in the virtual environment is still an ongoing problem. We deployed a word-gesture text entry technology based on gesture recognition in the virtual environment. This study aimed to investigate the performance of the word-gesture text entry technology with different input postures and VR experiences in the virtual environment. The study revealed that the VR experience (how long or how often using VR) had little effect on input performance. The hand-up po

Abstract:
As governments become increasingly concerned about the fiscal implications of the ageing population, labour market policies have sought to encourage mature workers to remain in the labour force. The `human capital' discourses motivating these policies rest on the assumption that older workers armed with motivation and vocational skills will be able to return to fulfilling work. This article uses the post-redundancy recruitment experiences of former Ansett Airlines flight attendants to develop a critique of these expectations. It suggests that policies to increase older workers' labour market p

AbstractC-Rules is a business rules management system developed by Constraint Technologies International (www.constrainttechnologies.com) that is designed for use in transport, travel and logistics problems. Individual businesses within these industries often need to solve the same kinds of problems related to scheduling of operations, resource allocation, staff rostering and so on, but each organisation has its own rules and procedures. Furthermore, these problems tend to be combinatorially challenging: before a final solution is chosen, many potential choices need to be generated, evaluated
