Abstract:
This article aims to think about the possibilities of typographic writing in real or suggested movement, in different supports and devices, as an alternative to traditional formats and uses of typography marked by linearity. Numerous experiments were carried out in analog media, however, digital systems bring tools that favor the occurrence of what Richard Font called liquid graphics. Typography here is approached in two senses: as a typographic sign – the letter itself–, and in compositions of texts, words and typographic characters in different interfaces.

Abstract:
This article investigates the way in which devices of foregrounding play a role at the typographical level of a text's organisation. In poetry, such devices are very old and are regularly used in a bold way, thereby creating specific effects. However, a historical overview reveals that such bold typographic experiments are not distributed evenly over time. It also emerges that some of these texts survive in the literary canon, while others are forgotten. On the basis of an analysis of some test cases in literary history, hypotheses are proposed which may explain this uneven distribution. The d

AbstractThe paper compares the typography of the first edition of Goethe’s collected writings 1787–1790 with the layout (‹mise en page›) of the manuscript copies from which the print was set. It tries to establish the textual authority of particular typographic devices for print dramas such as the indications of scenes, stage directions, and speech prefixes by tracing their relation to the manuscript setting copies and their development in subsequent volumes of the print edition, but especially for the tragedy Torquato Tasso. It turns out that print typography is sensitive to the manuscript re

Abstract Using the example of newspaper headlines, this paper develops a speech-act theoretic approach to aspects of meaning that can be communicated through the use of typographic means. After considering, more generally, the relationship between speech act theory and writing, analogies between prosody and typography are discussed and the claim is developed that typographic means, just as prosodic means, may function as illocutionary force indicating devices. Using Gallmann’s (1985) system of graphic means, newspaper headlines are defined, more specifically, as typographic objects indicating

This paper discusses striking, ‘bizarre’ features of textual design and language use in the Baroque period. These features include high complexity, prolixity, conspicuous formulas of politeness, indirectness, mixing of style levels, and the extensive use of a ‘squiggly’ script and other typographic devices. The perspective of social history and history of mentality is used to explain these phenomena. In particular, this paper reflects the influence of the estates in society and the role of confessional differences.

Abstract:
The article analyses the practices of text visualization in the works by the «41˚» group. It is suggested that visual devices play an essential role not only as the complements to the verbal component of a text, but also as the basis for verbalisation per se. In the texts, the combination of these aspects is realised through two strategies: typographic (I. Terentiev and I. Zdanevich), and handwritten (A. Kruchyonykh). The practice of text visualization is closely related to the group’s theoretical pursuits in the sphere of language.

My creative writing explores a variety of genres and literary styles, but almost all of the stories are concerned with fusing verbal and visual modes of communication. We are surrounded by a typographic environment. Typography is present not just in the printed matter that we read, but also in all our interactions with computers and mobile devices, with street signs and shop fronts. Typography has multiple personalities. As well as identifying and imparting information, typography is associative, and designers use it to influence our view of the messages we are reading. In this way, typography can be considered a creative endeavour. Typography is also the mechanized presentation of language. In this way, it is subservient to the structures of the messages it
