Abstract:
This article aims to think about the possibilities of typographic writing in real or suggested movement, in different supports and devices, as an alternative to traditional formats and uses of typography marked by linearity. Numerous experiments were carried out in analog media, however, digital systems bring tools that favor the occurrence of what Richard Font called liquid graphics. Typography here is approached in two senses: as a typographic sign – the letter itself–, and in compositions of texts, words and typographic characters in different interfaces.

This article investigates the way in which devices of foregrounding play a role at the typographical level of a text's organisation. In poetry, such devices are very old and are regularly used in a bold way, thereby creating specific effects. However, a historical overview reveals that such bold typographic experiments are not distributed evenly over time. This paper discusses striking, ‘bizarre’ features of textual design and language use in the Baroque period. These features include high complexity, prolixity, conspicuous formulas of politeness, indirectness, mixing of style levels, and the extensive use of a ‘squiggly’ script and other typographic devices. The perspective of social history and history of mentality is used to explain these phenomena. It is suggested that visual devices play an essential role not only as the complements to the verbal component of a text, but also as the basis for verbalisation per se. In the texts, the combination of these aspects is realised through two strategies: typographic (I. Terentiev and I. Zdanevich), and handwritten (A. Kruchyonykh).
