Abstract:
This article aims to think about the possibilities of typographic writing in real or suggested movement, in different supports and devices, as an alternative to traditional formats and uses of typography marked by linearity. Numerous experiments were carried out in analog media, however, digital systems bring tools that favor the occurrence of what Richard Font called liquid graphics. Typography here is approached in two senses: as a typographic sign – the letter itself–, and in compositions of texts, words and typographic characters in different interfaces.

This article investigates the way in which devices of foregrounding play a role at the typographical level of a text's organisation. In poetry, such devices are very old and are regularly used in a bold way, thereby creating specific effects. However, a historical overview reveals that such bold typographic experiments are not distributed evenly over time. It also emerges that some of these texts survive in the literary canon, while others are forgotten. On the basis of an analysis of some test cases in literary history, hypotheses are proposed which may explain this uneven distribution. The d

Abstract Using the example of newspaper headlines, this paper develops a speech-act theoretic approach to aspects of meaning that can be communicated through the use of typographic means. These features include high complexity, prolixity, conspicuous formulas of politeness, indirectness, mixing of style levels, and the extensive use of a ‘squiggly’ script and other typographic devices. The perspective of social history and history of mentality is used to explain these phenomena. In particular, this paper reflects the influence of the estates in society and the role of confessional differences.

It is suggested that visual devices play an essential role not only as the complements to the verbal component of a text, but also as the basis for verbalisation per se. In the texts, the combination of these aspects is realised through two strategies: typographic (I. Terentiev and I. Zdanevich), and handwritten (A. Kruchyonykh). The practice of text visualization is closely related to the group’s theoretical pursuits in the sphere of language.

The European University Initiative established 64 transnational alliances of higher education institutions. Each of these European Universities Alliances seeks to align universities to enhance academic excellence and competitiveness of the European Higher Education Area. While branding of higher education institutions has become a professionalized practice, creating a transnational alliance poses challenges beyond traditional academic visual identity. The aim is to map out visual and discursive self-representation patterns of European University Alliances on their websites, involving European

AbstractIn 1561, after a deadlock of many years, a new printing-office was set up in Holland by Jan van Zuren and three others, including the author Dirck Coornhert. After one year of publishing the press concluded most of its activities, and-according to documentary information recently found- the company was dissolved. Jan van Zuren became the sole owner of the firm, which over the next three years only issued a few books on commission. The production then ended completely. What became of the typographical material of the printing-shop has always been a mystery. As a result of bibliographica

Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that weakens muscles and can lead to paralysis as it progresses. For patients with severe paralysis, eye-tracking devices such as eye mouse enable communication. However, the equipment is expensive, and the calibration process is very difficult and frustrating for patients to use. To alleviate this problem, we propose a simple and efficient method to type texts intuitively with graphical guidance on the screen. Specifically, the method detects patients’ eye blinks in video frames to navigate through three seq

The study is based on the example of a corpus drawn from the Oulipian microtexts collected in Anthologie de l’OuLiPo (2009) by M. Bénabou and P. Fournel. With reference to the classification of figures of words proposed by J.-J.Robrieux (2000) and the theory of word plays by P. Guiraud (1976), an analysis of specific realisations of Oulipian linguistic ‘constraints’ founded on the phenomenon of homophony was undertaken. The visual aesthetic of the Olympic Games fuses time and space into the commodification of sport and culture. Rarely does poster art function beyond commodity and advertising. Spanning over a hundred years, the Olympics has adopted the poster as an artefact of the games, documenting the event’s spirit in concert with the essence of the host city. The union of time and space functioning under one aesthetic device, the poster, brings forth Mikhail Bakhtin’s revolutionary theory of the chronotope that the Russian philosopher and critic exposed in language and literature. The evolution of high resolution displays, especially liquid crystal displays (LCD), which are among the most commonly used ones, has contributed to a larger number of display readers. Regardless of high resolutions, problems in the legibility of typefaces still occur. Many typefaces may well be readable in print, but cause more difficulties when being read on displays. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of colour contrast on the legibility on LCDs to establish which type style is appropriate for a coloured text to be legible. Therefore, they are suitable for use on web because one file with all the necessary typeface styles is significantly smaller in size than classic families with multiple files. This shortens the font loading time, which enables wide range of typographical use on various devices.
