Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to analyze how multirational management relates to cooperatives’ corporate governance. Design/methodology/approach A typology of agricultural cooperatives’ potential for multirational management in relation to corporate governance is proposed. Coordinates based on data from assembly participation and separation of ownership and control are used to map cooperatives among these typologies. Four case studies representing each typology were conducted, allowing analysis of propositions. Findings By mapping the cooperatives from Mato Grosso do Sul, a reduced potential for multirational management is noted. By analyzing the four case studies, coded as Coop 1, 3, 13 and 16, this study found convergence with P1, P2 and P3. “Coop 1” shows signs of adopting exploitation practice. In “Coop 3,” evidence points to avoidance practice and, analyses of “Coop 13” indicates adoption of tolerance practice. In Coop 16, however, P4 could not be confirmed. Instead of polarizing practices, there is evidence of avoidance practice. Therefore, a positive relation between corporate governance and multirational management can partially be observed. Originality/value There are no records of a paper that has explored the relation of governance and multirational management. Therefore, this research broadens the understanding of how corporate governance can function in the context of cooperative organizations. As well, insight is given on how different mechanisms of corporate governance can influence organizations to adopt explicit or implicit and monorational or multirational methods of dealing with multiple rationalities.

Abstract:
The aim of the studies is the typology and regionalization of rural areas in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian (in Polish: kujawsko-pomorskie) Voivodship in 2018. Basing upon 27 features: natural, cultural, demographic, social, economic and financial conditions, 6 structural types were developed for 127 rural and urban-rural communes. All variables were subjected to the procedure of averaging the set and the standard deviation in plus and in minus. The position of the variable center meant the average level of favorable conditions, in plus – very favorable and favorable conditions, and in minus – less favorable and unfavorable conditions. On this basis, the structural typology of rural areas was developed statistically and cartographically (Figure 2A-E and Table 1). Then, 8 types of functional rural areas were distinguished: 1 – remarkably agricultural, 2 – dominated by the agricultural function, 3 – agricultural and tourism, 4 – agricultural and forestry, 5 – forestry, 6 – tourism and recreation, 7 – multifunctional and 8 – suburban (urbanized). The dominance of the occurrence or coexistence of individual functional and structural types became the basis for the geographical and economic regionalization of rural areas (Figure 3 and Table 2). Elaborated typology and regionalization is the first attempt at analytical and synthetic approach to rural areas in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodship. It possesses significant application value. Presented results of functional and structural research may contribute to better understanding of contemporary geographic and economic processes taking place in the development of these areas. Their proper management, undertaken planning and strategic activities may allow for more rational use of the existing natural, social, economic, financial conditions and resources and can significantly improve life quality of rural residents.

Abstract:
The determinants of how and why people shop has been a topical matter to many people for many years. This had a stimulus effect on the development and proliferation of a diversity of consumer typologies. The purpose of this study was to develop a typology of South African Generation Y consumers in their purchasing decisions. The study adopted a quantitative approach in which a structured questionnaire was used to survey 294 Generation Y consumers who were selected using an integration of non-probability convenience and judgement sampling methods. Seven groups of Generation Y consumers, namely quality conscious, brand conscious, novelty seeking, hedonistic, confused by over-choice, habitual, brand loyal, and fashion conscious were identified. Differences were found between consumers who are confused by over-choice and younger Generation Y consumers. Younger consumers were found to be more confused by over-choice compared to their older counterparts. Findings of this study suggest that retailers should use communication channels which would be more easily understood by Generation Y consumers, and they should provide information that assists buyers to make a rational decision in the buying process.

Abstract:
The couple typology described by Johnson and Ferraro (2000) provided the framework for this analysis of narrative accounts of couples in violent heterosexual relationships. Participants were 15 bidirectionally violent couples who were interviewed separately for about 1 hour each. Modified analytic induction guided the analyses. We categorized the violence in the relationships of these 15 couples in the following ways: 11 were categorized as “common couple” violence; two as “violent resistance”; one as “mutual violent control”; and one couple was categorized as what we named “pseudo-intimate terrorism.” We present rich descriptions of each category and motivations for and impacts of aggressive behavior as well as our rationale for classifying couples the way we did. Implications for intervention and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study investigates customer satisfaction based on a typology of consumer search behavior. The findings demonstrate that the type of consumer as defined by whether and how they search for information (passive, rational-active, and relational-dependent) has different level of satisfaction. Rational-active and relational-dependent consumers are found to be the dominant consumer types who actively search for information before purchasing a product and thus perceive a higher level of satisfaction than do passive consumers. The identification of satisfaction within each type of consumer provides a reason for customers to repurchase the same product, or recommend it to other people. As a result, companies will be able to achieve an increase in profitability. Recommendations for companies and future research directions are presented.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: This article is an attempt to reflect on and locate similarities and develop synchronicity between the fields of organizational change, management, psychology, language, and literature. The reflective learning takes place through reflective practice conducted on literature and organizations to generate new knowledge and ways to comprehend and deal with issues. Thus, the rationale for uniting contributions of management and English can be logically found in the processes of nature and human life. Methodology: This article is based on rational reasoning and critical analytic comparisons that aptly explain that the four models of organizational change are not new rather proclaimed in poetic expressions several years or a century ago. Main Findings: The organizational models of change are reflected in literature which has explained how Management by Objectives, organization as systems, mechanistic and organic organizations work and how they can be maneuvered towards increasing organizational productivity and performance. Applications of this study: This inquiry shall help further examination of various fields to develop new management concepts through bargain and borrowing. Novelty/Originality of this study: This article, through reasoning and analysis, has developed four life like models i.e., Miltonic, Frostian, Shelleyan, and Eliotic models of organizational change which seem to be preceding the current existing theories on teleological, life cycle, evolutionary and dialectical models of organizational change.

Abstract:
Leadership in stressful and dangerous situations is vitally important in terms of lives, property, and national strategic objectives. But our understanding of effective leadership in these and other contexts is limited. Part of the problem is that interactionist theoretical perspectives are not reflected in contemporary leadership thinking. In addition, the impact of individual differences on leadership is often misrepresented or hidden by linear correlations and regressions conducted on continuous scores. This study employed new, innovative, indirect conditional reasoning measures to assess the personalities of 627 leaders entering the militaryâ s most challenging and stressful combat leader development course (the US Army Ranger School). These innovative measures predicted compelling differences in leadership, attrition, and in the peer evaluations made during the training. Analyses conducted on the continuous personality scores demonstrate that these findings are misrepresented or hidden by linear correlations and regressions. As an alternative, I present a configural scoring scheme, couched in a poker analogy, to explain how these individual differences combine to predict the odds of success for each of the 18 personality types studied.

Abstract:
My doctoral work aims to construct a theoretical and intellectual framework to understand a set of remarkable developments concerning the Italian discourse on architecture from the early 1950s to the mid 1970s. This was when the term Rationalism and its theoretical body of work acquired renewed prestige replacing the ephemeral aesthetic of the modernist movement with a grounded discourse based on a deep understanding of the city as background of all architectural artifacts. The main hypothesis of my research is that this return to a rational methodology characterized by a deep understanding of architecture's internal building logic and identifiable in the work and ideas expressed in the International section of the XV Triennale Exhibition of 1973 had a significant and lasting impact on the thinking and formation of architecture culture in Italy and worldwide. This dissertation will thus attempt to construct a matrix of historical and methodological associations and demonstrations that validate and legitimize that rational methodology through a close examination of the work and key concepts of Tendenza, a group of architects in the Italy of the 1960s, pointing out their importance in preparing the ground for the International section of the XV Triennale Exhibition of 1973, which represented a major point of arrival and a point of departure for architecture culture in Italy and worldwide.

Abstract:
<p>Steel-concrete composite structures are widely used throughout the world for buildings and bridges. A distinguishing feature of this form of construction is the combination of concrete and steel components to achieve enhanced structural performance. <p>The time-dependent response of concrete and its infl uence on the service behaviour and design of composite structures are the main focus of this SED. For the fi rst time, a publication combines a state-of-the-art review of the research with the available design specifi cations of Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and USA. This publication intends to enhance the awareness of the service response of composite structures and of the latest research and standards’ developments. It is aimed at designers and researchers alike. <p>The review of research available in open literature is provided and arranged according to structural typologies, i. e. slabs, beams, and columns. It serves as background information for current service design rules and provides insight into the most recent research advancements. The review of available design guidelines presents the similarities and differences of the recommended service design procedures infl uenced by concrete time effects. Selected case studies of building and bridge projects show possible design approaches and the rationale required when dealing with the time-dependent response and design of composite structures. The authors of this publication are design engineers and academics involved in the service design and research on the time-dependent response of composite structures.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on (1) Edwards’s discussion of three basic epistemic modalities (sense perception, rational inference, and rational intuition) and their sanctification; (2) his account of the epistemic status of scripture; and (3) his reasons for thinking that typology is another valid epistemic mode. The chapter includes discussions of Edwards’s doctrine of the spiritual senses, and his views on natural theology and on the relation between reason and revelation. It concludes with an examination of similarities and differences between Edwards’s views on epistemology and those of Karl Barth, and a brief defence of Edwards’s claim that a renewed heart is a necessary precondition of doing good work in theology.

Abstract:
In assessing the political charge of Romanticism, Georg Lukács castigated it for its irrationalism and proto-fascistic tendencies, while Jacques Barzun stressed its anti-totalitarian character, its promotion of individuality and diversity against imposed uniformity and coercion. More recent critics have produced a complex typology of Romantic political critiques of modernity, from restorationist conservative to utopian socialist. This chapter takes its lead from Hegel’s diagnosis of modern freedom, and of Romanticism’s place in it, locating common elements and variations in Romantic cultural critique. Among the recent revivals of the Romantic spirit are the counterculture of 1960s, and postmodern assaults on subjective coherence and rational autonomy. For all its limitations, the course of Romanticism is not yet run.

This chapter examines the notion of power in relation to authority and the state. Power and authority are central concepts in politics. Politics is about competing interests and values, and this requires knowing something about power, since those who have power over others can determine which interests and values will be adopted by political decision-makers. The chapter first considers the link between power and authority before discussing the classic threefold typology of authority proposed by Max Weber: traditional authority, charismatic authority, and legal–rational authority. It then explores some conceptual questions about power; for example, whether it is the same as force, or whether it must be exercised deliberately. It also evaluates the methodological problems inherent in the measurement of power, particularly in relation to the different theories of the state such as pluralism, elitism, and Marxism.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the next processes in building out the theory: coming up with a name for the phenomenon one is studying; developing some concepts that will help analyze it; and developing a typology. There exist different approaches to naming in social science. One can, for example, use existing words or invent new ones. Once the stage of observation is over and the phenomenon has been named, the name often needs to be turned into a concept. Turning some phenomenon into a concept means, for one thing, to make it more rational. Finally, as part of the process of creating a full tentative theory with the help of empirical material, one may use a typology or a classification. Classifications, more than typologies, are used to bring order into the empirical material at an early stage.

This chapter suggests a typology of human morality based on gene–culture coevolution, the rational actor model, and behavioral game theory. The basic principles are that human morality is the product of an evolutionary dynamic in which evolving culture makes new behaviors fitness enhancing, thus altering our genetic constitution. It is thus predicated upon an evolved set of human genetic predispositions and consists of the capacity to conceptualize and value a moral realm governing behavior beyond consequentialist reasoning.

Abstract:
A historical analysis of the discourse of the purpose of higher education provides a typology of four distinct discourses which reflect the social, political, and economic context within which the changing rationale for funding universities has been defined. By analyzing where a technology-driven, international university could be located in the interstices of these competing discourses, the typology can assist educational leaders, administrators, and policymakers to more readily identify key obstacles to be overcome, opportunities that could be developed, and the latent dysfunctions that need to be anticipated to avoid both collateral damage and the resulting determined pushback. Forewarned is forearmed, and understanding which aspects of which discourses lend support or undermine such a project could greatly assist proponents in seeking support and avoiding missteps.

This chapter develops from the revealed realities and moral culture formed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a theological and ethical rationale for the healing professions as callings within which the moral reality of healing is conceptualized and enacted. Healing, which is characterized by restoring wholeness, relationships, witnessing the patient’s narrative, the potency of touch, and empathetic solidarity, provides moral convergence and continuity between communal rituals and practices oriented by faith convictions and communal reliance on medical interventions. An evolving moral reality of healing is represented through a typology of three broad patterns of relationship between faith convictions and medical practice that emerged historically in LDS culture: faith against medicine, faith and medicine, and faith in medicine.

This chapter explores organizational theory including inter-organizational behavior and several pro-social concerns for both individuals and organizations. A wide range of organizational theories support academy-business inter-organizational partnership functionality. Such theories include rational, natural, and open systems; identity and pro-social behavior; institutional theory; resource dependence theory; social exchange theory; stakeholder theory; and academic capitalism. Inter-organizational behavior is supported by network functionality as well as cross-sectional involvement by the federal and state governments. Inter-organizational partnerships are complex. Little research has been a focus specifically between higher education and companies. The academy-business inter-organizational partnership typology is introduced as a framework for exploring these relationships including concerns of philanthropic, transactional, symbiotic, and synergistic partnership dimensions.

This chapter examines power and authority, two central concepts in politics, in relation to the state. It first defines power in the context of authority, taking into account the distinction between them by citing the role of the US Supreme Court as an example. It then considers the classic threefold typology of authority proposed by German sociologist Max Weber, namely: traditional authority, charismatic authority, and legal–rational authority. It also addresses some conceptual questions about power; for example, whether power is the same as force, whether it must be exercised deliberately, whether it is a good thing, or whether we can eliminate it. The chapter goes on to explore the methodological problems inherent in the measurement of power, particularly in relation to the theories of the state such as Marxism, pluralism, elitism, and feminism. Finally, it describes Stephen Lukes' three dimensions of power.

Abstract:
The Hybrid Block as Urban Form Javier Pérez Igualada Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, Universitat Politécnica de València. Camino de Vera, s/n. 46022 Valencia. E-mail: jperezi@urb.pv.es Keywords: Hybrid Block, Urban Form, Mixed Use Buildings, Open Planning Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space In this paper we analyze the hybrid block as an urban form of synthesis, in which the open order of modern urbanism is superimposed on the closed order of traditional urbanism. In this model, proposed for the first time by Hilberseimer in his 1927 Vertical City, housing and work are not separated but overlapping on mixed-use buildings, where the dwellings are located in slabs or towers shaped as isolated volumes, whose design responds to its own internal logic, based on functional criteria (rational distribution of rooms, orientation, ventilation, sunshine, views...). Those volumes emerge from a compact built-up podium for commercial or office uses, aligned with the perimeter streets and responding to the external logic of the urban fabric. This configures an urban form in which both hybridization of architectural forms and hybridization of uses are obtained, recovering the multifunctional character of the traditional urban block, which had disappeared in functionalist urbanism. The paper examines the reasons that can explain the exclusion of this urban form from the repertoire of elements of modern urbanism, and analyzes the validity of the hybrid block, as an strategy to recompose or reinterpret the urban block, assuming high density and collective housing as a basic typology for the construction of the city.
