Purpose/Aim: To study whether gender is communicated through design, and if so is the case, the aim is also to see by which aspects gender is communicated.
Material/Method: 40 perfumebottles, 20 for women and 20 for men has been studied, and attributes such as their shapes, colors as well as the fonts on their labels has been analyzed in search of gender differences. An art director has also been interwiewed to receive information about genderdesign from a practical wiew.
Main results: There is no difference out of a gender perspective between the colors on the bottles in aspect of lightness but colors on ladieperfumes are generally more saturated and they are also more often located among yellow, orange and red shades on the color chart while perfumesbottles for men tend to consist of yellow, green and blue colors in more unsaturated versions. The results of the study of shapes showes that there are more cubes among the male perfumes than there are in the group of womensperfumes. Concidering the study of fonts does results prove that fonts on labels of male perfumes mostly belong to the most common group of fontfamilies. This compared to
perfumes for ladies where the the fonts varied between the two current fontgroups of the study, and therefore are bort rare and common. The interwiew with the art director gave that he sees differences between products for women and products for men out of a gender perspective. He claims that most perfumes for women generally have soft shapes, warm colors and scriptlike fonts with the opposite of attributes for men and he argues that those products not fitting in these
genderframes are products for women looking more masculine. According to the art director, products for men are more limited when it comes to design as they would rarely approach areas that would be considered as feminine.

Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate associations between typeface design of the Latin alphabet and the Japanese writing system and nonspeech sound stimulus. Moreover, the goal was to study if the associations are influenced by the native language and the culture of a person. Theories that this study was based on included the sound symbolism and the BoubaKiki phenomenon, which shows that certain sounds are associated with certain shapes, and the theory on the typeface personality. Two onlinesurveys were created, one in English and one in Japanese. The surveys were distributed to two groups, the Latin alphabet native users and the Japanese native speakers. The questions of the surveys were the same and were split in two parts depending on the language of typefaces. 10 typefaces were chosen for the Latin alphabet and 10 for the Japanese writing system. Sound files included tones, rhythms, and the Brownian noise. Respondents were asked to listen to a sound and then choose a typeface that felt “closest” to it. Result shows a somewhat weak pattern that people associate quicker rhythm with thinner typefaces and slower rhythm with heavier typefaces. Brownian noise was strongly associated with angular and thin typefaces. Tones that changed the pitch were somewhat weakly associated with rounder typefaces. High pitched tones were associated with thin and light typefaces. The differences in cross-sensory perception between the Japanese and the western respondents were not major. However, some minor differences could be noticed which might depend on the way the study was conducted or the other factors.

Full textThis essay addresses the questions about how and why a font can convey a certain impression, feeling or tonality on a website's headings. As well as the importance of being a designer or other professionals in the field, to have knowledge and awareness of fonts. We have chosen a qualitative method based on our questions. Through interviews and a focus group, we intend to study three fonts from three different fontfamilies. Roboto (sans serif), La Parisienne (regular script) and Fifty four (display /decorative). Theories are obtained from previous studies in the subject, we refer to literature by experts and the data comes from our empirical research that we have collected from our interviews and the focus group. We have developed a website in WordPress, that has been a practical element and has served as a platform for our research by presenting the fonts of our various headings. The results of this study showed that our selected fonts of the headlines were interpreted equally by our informants and everyone answers that it depends on what kind of a typeface it is. Fonts can be interpreted from many different perspectives, the form of a font affects people's interpretation a lot but also interpreted based on personality traits, through basic feelings, past associations, connotation and the majority's response which was consistent. The knowledge of fonts plays a central role in the early design process and it becomes important for a web designer to be able to master typography and understand its powers.
