Purpose/Aim: To study whether gender is communicated through design, and if so is the case, the aim is also to see by which aspects gender is communicated.
Material/Method: 40 perfumebottles, 20 for women and 20 for men has been studied, and attributes such as their shapes, colors as well as the fonts on their labels has been analyzed in search of gender differences. An art director has also been interwiewed to receive information about genderdesign from a practical wiew.
Main results: There is no difference out of a gender perspective between the colors on the bottles in aspect of lightness but colors on ladieperfumes are generally more saturated and they are also more often located among yellow, orange and red shades on the color chart while perfumesbottles for men tend to consist of yellow, green and blue colors in more unsaturated versions. The results of the study of shapes showes that there are more cubes among the male perfumes than there are in the group of womensperfumes. Concidering the study of fonts does results prove that fonts on labels of male perfumes mostly belong to the most common group of fontfamilies. This compared to
perfumes for ladies where the the fonts varied between the two current fontgroups of the study, and therefore are bort rare and common. The interwiew with the art director gave that he sees differences between products for women and products for men out of a gender perspective. He claims that most perfumes for women generally have soft shapes, warm colors and scriptlike fonts with the opposite of attributes for men and he argues that those products not fitting in these
genderframes are products for women looking more masculine. According to the art director, products for men are more limited when it comes to design as they would rarely approach areas that would be considered as feminine.

Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate associations between typeface design of the Latin alphabet and the Japanese writing system and nonspeech sound stimulus. Moreover, the goal was to study if the associations are influenced by the native language and the culture of a person. Theories that this study was based on included the sound symbolism and the BoubaKiki phenomenon, which shows that certain sounds are associated with certain shapes, and the theory on the typeface personality. Two onlinesurveys were created, one in English and one in Japanese. The surveys were distributed to two groups, the Latin alphabet native users and the Japanese native speakers. The questions of the surveys were the same and were split in two parts depending on the language of typefaces. 10 typefaces were chosen for the Latin alphabet and 10 for the Japanese writing system. Sound files included tones, rhythms, and the Brownian noise. Respondents were asked to listen to a sound and then choose a typeface that felt “closest” to it. Result shows a somewhat weak pattern that people associate quicker rhythm with thinner typefaces and slower rhythm with heavier typefaces. Brownian noise was strongly associated with angular and thin typefaces. Tones that changed the pitch were somewhat weakly associated with rounder typefaces. High pitched tones were associated with thin and light typefaces. The differences in cross-sensory perception between the Japanese and the western respondents were not major. However, some minor differences could be noticed which might depend on the way the study was conducted or the other factors.

Full textThis essay addresses the questions about how and why a font can convey a certain impression, feeling or tonality on a website's headings. As well as the importance of being a designer or other professionals in the field, to have knowledge and awareness of fonts. We have chosen a qualitative method based on our questions. Through interviews and a focus group, we intend to study three fonts from three different fontfamilies. Roboto (sans serif), La Parisienne (regular script) and Fifty four (display /decorative). Theories are obtained from previous studies in the subject, we refer to literature by experts and the data comes from our empirical research that we have collected from our interviews and the focus group. We have developed a website in WordPress, that has been a practical element and has served as a platform for our research by presenting the fonts of our various headings. The results of this study showed that our selected fonts of the headlines were interpreted equally by our informants and everyone answers that it depends on what kind of a typeface it is. Fonts can be interpreted from many different perspectives, the form of a font affects people's interpretation a lot but also interpreted based on personality traits, through basic feelings, past associations, connotation and the majority's response which was consistent. The knowledge of fonts plays a central role in the early design process and it becomes important for a web designer to be able to master typography and understand its powers.

Full textBorlänge Bandy is a sports association based in Borlänge. Before this work took place they had no visual identity. To help Borlänge Bandy create better perception, a visual identity was created. The goal was to create a visual identity supported by the target group’s views. To investigate the target group's opinions on Borlänge Bandy’s visual appearance several surveys was conducted. These formed the basis for a renewal of Borlänge Bandy’s logotype. Material to the visual identity was analyzed in a focus group. This then led to an updated version of the logotype along with graphic material. An evaluative focus group then checked that the goal had been achieved. The result was a new visual identity with associated graphic identity manual to Borlänge Bandy that contains information about typography, colors, logotype, visual identity imagery, correspondence materials, business products and graphic elements. If the graphic material is handled with consistency it will create recognition. The conclusions were that the new visual identity is perceived as unified, harmonious, and related throughout the manual.

Full textAbstract (EN) This paper is the final part of the Media Producer Program at Umeå University, including a supplementary year. This essay is a Bachelor thesis in media technology. The purpose of this was to deepen my knowledge and extend my skills in graphic design, especially for printing. The goal was to find an answer to the question "what is the significance of typography in the analog format?". Another purpose was to test the hypothesis "it is harder to read text written in a different color than black on a white/light background". This thesis are for those who are interested in typography and its importance. The thesis also refer to the history about typography, the structure and basic rules. It also presents a survey of its significance in the analog format. Not a statistical survey, but an empirical study that captures a bunch of opinions and values about the use of typography. The results of the survey are presented with texts and tables, and it shows a disagreement to what the literature says. The result shows that people read text written with sans-serifs rather than text written with serifs. It also shows that people doesn’t thinks it’s harder to read text written with other colors than black on light backgrounds. The result of the side project appears with texts and pictures, so you can get an overview about the layout and how the results of the study, and the theory, are implicated. In the essay I have also looked at scientific articles. You can read about that in the discussion section, where you also find suggestions to further studies and research in typography, as well as thoughts on the work in its entirety.

Full textSanke is a new company which, through its website will sell products produced in northern and western Africa. Competition between companies createsendless choices for customers, which becomes a problem for the companies that want to reach their customers through the media noise. Therefore, the goal of this project was to provide Sanke a consistent graphical look to increase awareness and recognition of the company and its brand. This was done by designing a visual identity that reflects the company's core values. The company's core values wereestablished through an interview with Sanke. The core values were then used to create nine different proposals for visual identities that the target group through a web survey provided feedback on. The result of the target group’s feedback became Sanke’s visual identity. The visual identity contained a logotype, colours and typefaces as well as guidelines for handling the elements and their interactions. It was concluded that the fact that the core values and colour connotations may have different meanings for different individuals may have complicated the assessment of the proposals. But the target group had in a sense, a common understanding.

Full textThis survey was carried out together with Marie Gustavsson, owner of Studio M. The aim was to create a graphic profile, which should help the company to convey the following words and values:Peaceful Personal Sensitive Quality Familiar Pride Everyone´s equal valueTo get to know how logos at hairdressers look today, a visual content analysis was carried out. The analysis examined 11 hairdressing salons. This was to see how logos can differ. This showed that the company logos had some specific design elements that came back in most logos, such as corporate branding, font and color. Based on the results of the analysis, I created the logo. The typical design elements in the logos were in mind when creating the design. The literature study revealed what a graphic profile should contain. The literature study, the content analysis and the company values that should be reflected in the graphic profile were in mind when creating the graphic profile.Three options on logos, three options on colors and two options on typefaces were tested against the target group in a questionnaire survey, in order to arrive at which design elements attracted the target group the most. The winning logo, color and font were then applied to the graphic profile. The result was a graphic profile containing the logo, company brand, colors, templates and rules, which, when properly used during the creation of the visual identity, will attract Studio M's target audience.

Full textHow the typographic design of a document affects how easy it is to read is a subject that has long been of interest to researchers. The aim has been to reach a better understanding of the reading process, and to find an ideal way to design text for maximum legibility. However, the researchers have seemingly failed to raise awareness about their results in the typographic community. The aim of this thesis was to create an overview of the research into how microtypography – the typography concerned with individual letters and sentences – affects the legibility of running text. Ten empirical studies on this subject, published in scientific journals, were selected after literature searches. The methods and results of the studies were described and discussed. The studies were concerned with the following microtypographic factors: differences in legibility between typefaces, the role of x-height and letter spacing in, differences in legibility between lower case, upper case and italic letters as well as differences in legibility between specific letter shapes. The conclusion was that legibility research gives interesting insights into how typography can influence the reading process. However, the limited amount of studies found concerning each typographic factor, as well as the lack of studies concerning Swedish typography makes it hard to create typographic guidelines for Swedish typographers based on the research. It was also concluded that studies conducted in cooperation between researchers and typographers might be a way to raise awareness about the research and lead to greater practical application of research results.

Full textThe aim of the present study was to determine how graphic designers around the globe perceive Scandinavian graphic design. 53 participants from industrial countries around the world partook in the study, which used a combination method of mail interviews and questionnaires. The results of this study indicated that, regardless of continent, Scandinavian graphic design was perceived as simple and functional. The often grid-based layout favored the use of sans-serifs, white space and few graphic elements according to the participants in this study. Achromatic colors such as black, white, and grey without gradients and shadows were preferred. Followed by earthy and pastel hues. Motifs were used sparingly, but when they were, they depicted elements found in nature or geometric shapes. Photos and illustrations were perceived to be equally in use, with a slight inclination towards illustrations being used more. The perceived impact of Scandinavian graphic design was wide-ranging. The participants who found the impact to be high were due to advocating simplicity and functionality, intertwining design fields, and/or raising awareness of conscious graphic design. The participants, who found the impact to be low, believed that too little exposure was a contributing factor. Most participants in this study considered Scandinavian graphic design simpler in comparison to what they can see in their own countries. Furthermore, African, Asian and South American participants perceived the colors to be lower in chromatic value.

Full textThis essay examines a typeface used for Roman letters meant to connote ”China” as an exotic and foreign place, within Swedish visual culture history. I examine this typeface using Swedish film posters by Eric Rohman (1891-1949) from the Charlie Chan-series from the years 1934-1940, focusing on the poster Charlie Chan i Kina (1935). The purpose is to examine constructions of ”the Chinese” and ”China” in these posters, and how this specific typeface has been used in these depictions as well as been constructed in relation to these ideas. Through a semiotic model for image analysis and the appliance of postcolonial studies, critical race theory and visual culture studies, I arrive at several conclusions. By imitating Chinese calligraphic visual elements, the typeface in Charlie Chan i Kina has the ability to connote ”China” as an exotic, traditional and foreign place, for a white Swedish audience. The analysis discusses the semiotic functions of the typeface in relation to contexts of the film poster, Swedish visual culture history and discourses concerning race in Sweden.
