Abstract: Tibor Scitovsky (1910–2002) fought against several tyrants in his life, the first being American mass culture, which limited free choice in the modern mass market. More subtly, he confronted the dictates of the scholarly economics discipline, which he at first accepted, then resisted, and eventually rejected. Tracing his journey through American postwar academia, this article provides an account of how Scitovsky approached the phenomenon of mass society. Like some American intellectuals, he emphasized creativity as a means for taming the tyranny of the masses. However, in seeing crea

Lipsey's position is analysed in the light of his early contribution to the debate on the Phillips curve (Lipsey 1960). There, as later, Lipsey's argument rests on the assumption that the labour market, though characterised by a unique demand-and-supply equilibrium, may persist in disequilibria in the long run. Such proposition is discussed critically. Lipsey's analysis can be seen as a clear expre

AbstractIn The Tyranny of Merit, Sandel recasts the discontent expressed in populism as a rejection of market morality and as an inarticulate plea for the restoration of civic virtue. He argues that a ‘market-based globalisation project’ has fostered meritocratic ideas which humiliate the victims of that project and undermine the dignity of labour. I question Sandel’s claim that meritocracy is a market value and the dignity of labour is not. I argue that his account of a moral alternative to normal market institutions—an economy in which individuals’ rewards are somehow aligned with their true

The allocation of resources for research is increasingly based on so-called ‘bibliometrics’. Scientists arenow deemed to be successful on the sole condition that their work be abundantly cited. This trendappears to be fraught with dangers, particularly in the area of social sciences, where bibliometrics are less developed, and where monographs (which are not

Noll usefully shows that this concept of republicanism underwent a series of changes from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth. Beginning in the late eighteenth century republicanism referenced liberty from tyranny, man as citizen, and virtue as a k
