Theoretical and analytical methods for 238U–206Pb dating of U-series disequilibrium zircons by secondary ion mass spectrometry are developed. U–Pb dates improve age precision 3 times better than U–Th dating for zircon >150 ka.

Abstract:
A new LA-MIC-ICP-MS analytical technique has been developed for the rapid measurement of 206Pb/238U zircon age (<1%, 2s) at a high spatial resolution. We show that this technique can be routinely employed to date U–Pb in small and/or complex zircons, providing a powerful tool for geochronology.

ABSTRACTThe Souter Head sub-volcanic complex (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) intruded the high-grade metamorphic core of the Grampian Orogen at 469.1 ± 0.6 Ma (uranium-238–lead-206 (238U–206Pb) zircon). It follows closely peak metamorphism and deformation in the Grampian Terrane and tightly constrains the end of the Grampian Event of the Caledonian Orogeny. Temporally coincident U–Pb and argon/argon (40Ar/39Ar) data show the complex cooled quickly with temperatures decreasing from ca.800 °C to less than 200 °C within 1 Ma. Younger rhenium–osmium (Re–Os) ages are due to post-emplacement alteration of

Abstract:
The Moon is depleted in volatile elements relative to the Earth and Mars. Low abundances of volatile elements, fractionated stable isotope ratios of S, Cl, K and Zn, high μ ( 238 U/ 204 Pb) and long-term Rb/Sr depletion are distinguishing features of the Moon, relative to the Earth. These geochemical characteristics indicate both inheritance of volatile-depleted materials that formed the Moon and planets and subsequent evaporative loss of volatile elements that occurred during lunar formation and differentiation. Models of volatile loss through localized eruptive degassing are not consistent w
