Abstract:
This chapter deals with the Iraqi Army in the period from the end of the war against Iran until the conquest of Kuwait (1988-1990). It describes the Iraqi Armed Forces after the war against Iran, their sense of power, their new fighting capabilities and operational experience and the changes the Armed Forces went through, This period was characterized by tension between Iraq and Israel and the Western countries led by the U. S. stemming from Saddam’s efforts to develop unconventional weapons. Simultaneously, the regime’s traditional desire to liberate Palestine and destroy the “Zionist entity” was revitalized. In parallel, Iraq’s economic difficulties brought to a crisis with Kuwait, who became an attractive target for the Iraqis in order to solve their problems and improve their situation.

Abstract:
Gas turbine components and parts are widely known to have many failure modes for which the failures correlate in either the Weibull or Lognormal probability distributions. This paper describes a typical case which is handled by the new computer programs now being used by the U. S. Navy. These programs have brought the capability to make such analyses directly to the designer or analysts desk instead of having to be sent off to a central computer to wait in line. The programs are interactive with the user and extremely user friendly. Uses are expanding to cover almost every area in the life cycle of gas turbines where it would be beneficial to forecast future failures. This makes the programs useful to managers, logisticians, life cycle cost analysts, and a host of others. Wide applicability of the methods assures usage outside of the gas turbine field.

Abstract:
Mononuclear phagocytes, an integral part of the lymphoreticular infiltrate of human and experimental tumors, might contribute to fibrin deposition within malignant tissues through the production of procoagulant activity (PCA). We have studied the PCA of tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) in two poorly immunogenic, metastatic murine sarcomas (mFS6 and MN/MCA1); peritoneal macrophages (PM)from tumor-bearing and control animals were also studied, as reference cell populations. TAM were prepared from disaggregated tumor tissue and PM from ‘lavage’ fluid by adherence to plastic.PCA was evaluated by a one-stage clotting assay immediately after isolation (basal PCA) and following in vitro stimulatio.Basal PCA was very low(<1 u/104 M) inall cellpreparations. Exposure of PM from both normal and tumor-bearing animals to endotoxin (S. enteritidis LPS, 1 ug/ml f..), phorbol myristate acetate (PMA,0. ug/ml) or the chemotactic peptide FMLP(10-7 M) resulted in a 10-,7- and 3-fold increase of PCA respectively. In contrast TAM from mFS6 and MN/MCA1 consistently failed to generate PCAin response to different concentrationsof the same stimuli. Treatment of TAM with aspirin (10-3M) did not affect the cell unresponsiveness. Fluorescence microscopy showed that almost all PM were stain ed with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-LPS, while 10% of the TAM were stained. Moreover binding studies demonstrated that TAM had a loyer number of specific binding sites for phorbol esters than PM. These data suggest that the defective responsiveness of TAM to endotoxin, PMA and, possibly, to FMLP is due to the lack or very low expression of binding sites for these agents on the cell surface. The tumor environment may orient the functional status of in situ macrophages in a sense less favourable to the host.

Abstract:
Abstract Human’s motion and its mechanisms had become interesting in the last years, where the medecine’s field search for rehabilitation methods for handicapped persons. Other fields, like sport sciences, professional or military world, search to distinguish profiles and ways to train them with specific purposes. Besides, recent findings in neuroscience try to describe these mechanisms from an organic point of view. Until now, different researchs had given a model about control motor that describes how the union between the senses’s information allows adaptable movements. One of this sense is the proprioception, the sense which has a quite big factor in the orientation and position of the body, its members and joints. For this reason, research for new strategies to explore proprioception and improve the theories of human motion could be done by three different vias. At first, the sense is analysed in a case-study where three groups of persons are compared in a controlled enviroment with three experimental tasks. The subjects belong to each group by the kind of sport they do: sedentary, normal sportsmen (e.g. athletics, swimming) and martial sportmen (e.g. karate, judo). They are compared thinking about the following hypothesis: “Martial Sportmen have a better proprioception than of the other groups’s subjects: It could be due to the type of exercises they do in their sports as empirically, a contact sportsman shows significantly superior motor skills to the members of the other two groups. The second via are records from encephalogram (EEG) while the experimental tasks are doing. These records are analised a posteriori with a set of processing algorithms to extract characteristics about brain’s activity of the proprioception and motion control. Finally , the study tries to integrate graphic tools to make easy to understand final scientific results which allow us to explore the brain activity of the subjects through easy interfaces (e.g. space-time events, activity intensity, connectivity, specific neural netwoks or anormal activity). In the future, this application could be a complement to assist doctors, researchers, sports center specialists and anyone who must improve the health and movements of handicapped persons.
