Abstract:

Abstract:
This examination of ubuntu is engaged in a conversation with the speculative philosophy of organism (‘process’) to acquire an extended tool by which to engage within its ontology the widest possible range of human interaction. The engagement by ubuntu’s relational doctrine of the speculative philosophical cosmology of A.N. Whitehead placed portions of the latter’s constructs at the service of ubuntu’s transversal capacity to examine and apply the deepest understanding of its own etymology. It has been a challenge to understand occasions of injustice and suffering which have manifested within the same African culture which has given to the world the language and concept of ubuntu. It has been commonplace to isolate the utopian relational ontology implicit in the aphorism from occasions of the worst of human nature. It was the premise of this study that an understanding of an ubuntu which excludes dystopian occasions has done a disservice to the breadth, depth and height of what is to be fully human – including occasions of suffering and anti-social behaviours.

Abstract:
Many postcolonial African states have experienced violent conflicts, prompting the quest for viable approaches to conflict resolution and peace-building. Certain groups’ desire to control power and resources at the expense of others lies at the heart of the racism, civil wars, armed insurrections, terrorism, ethnic conflict, genocide, xenophobia, and intracommunity and domestic conflict prevalent in Africa, particularly in countries that experienced prolonged foreign domination. The quest for peace and security led to the resurgence of Ubuntu, an African humanist ideology, as an indigenous approach to conflict resolution and peace-building. This article explores the place of Ubuntu in the continent’s peace and security projects. Despite the utility of Ubuntu’s principles in a few postconflict societies, the article highlights the difficulties involved in its adoption by state institutions, mainly due to the complex interactions exemplified by the modern state. However, adherence to the principles of Ubuntu by state and nonstate actors would drastically reduce threats to peace and security in Africa.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay explores the original meaning and understanding of the concept of Ubuntu. It evaluates the strengths and limitations of this cherished African anthropological and philosophical notion. By bringing the anthropology of Ubuntu in conversation with the anthropology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer possibilities for the re-valuation of Ubuntu are opened. Attention to the anthropology of Bonhoeffer will help Ubuntu to affirm community without falling into the trap of collectivism. It will also prevent Ubuntu from overestimating the capabilities of humans through the under-estimation of the reality of sin. Where Ubuntu is also open to the transformative power of the gospel its redeeming potential on a broken continent is enhanced.

Abstract:
Ubuntu has been identified by several scholars as a philosophy that provides a framework to fight health disasters such as COVID-19. Ubuntu refers to the African worldview of seeing oneself through others. It refers to the pattern of interconnectedness between people in the form of a philosophy or worldview. Ubuntu explores concerns about cosmic and global context of life. This article stipulates that Ubuntu can provide ways to deal with challenges that emerge with the COVID-19 pandemic. Ubuntu fosters the integrated components of humanity as it appreciates the biological, psychosocial, spiritual, and environmental aspects of life. The article explores several themes such as self-awareness and societal responsibility, holism, spirituality, health promotion, food security, social justice and human rights, generosity, sharing, and teamwork. Others have advanced that Ubuntu is a philosophy to adopt in the fight against epidemics, and we seek to broaden the debate by exploring Ubuntu axiological and ontological humanistic–existential themes. Finally, the article calls for the adoption of Ubuntu philosophy in psychological and social work interventions in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
This article investigates the relevance of the African philosophy of ubuntu in the South African context during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data is drawn from the available academic literature and analysed using the elements of ubuntu as a theoretical lens. A systemic review was adopted as a methodological approach for the selection and review of scholarship that fosters unity and solidarity in times of crisis. The discussion delineates the impact of COVID-19 in South Africa and the significance of ubuntu in building community solidarity and resilience. It further demonstrates the universal nature of ubuntu with its intention of upholding togetherness and unity in times of crisis and renewal. Community solidarity ensures social protection and belonging, thereby propagating ubuntu as a way of navigating the global pandemic. Despite the contestations of the meaning and application of ubuntu, the findings of this study postulate that ubuntu is essential in times of crisis and renewal.

De, Wet Daniël Paulus. "Wisdom and Ubuntu : a close reading of Proverbs 1-9 in dialogue with African Ubuntu." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50548.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate that a dialogue can be established between wisdom in Proverbs 1 - 9 and ubuntu. This dialogue becomes evident from a close reading of Proverbs 1 - 9 and from a study of the correspondence between the worldviews found in ancient Israel and Africa respectively. Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu is a Zulu saying that has its equivalent in nearly every sub- Saharan culture. Briefly, it translates to: "A human being is a human being because of (other) human beings." This points to a uniquely African view of human beings. This communal emphasis is also found within the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. The sages of the Old Testament attach great importance to harmony in the community and strongly emphasise obedience to wisdom as a way of accomplishing this harmony. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu is especially challenging from an academic point of view. On the one hand, wisdom highlights valuable aspects of African ways of life, principles and ideas that are often overlooked or ignored. On the other hand, ubuntu holds the promise of a nonwestern tradition that has been misread and marginalised in history, but that is reclaiming its place. A close reading is used to interpret the particular words, images and organisation of the scenes or passages in Proverbs 1 - 9. The interaction between the worldviews of ancient Israel and Africa leads us to further conclusions, identifying gaps in our knowledge and pointing to directions that could be followed in hermeneutics of which scholars have been unaware up to now. It also helps to sharpen the focus on wisdom by suggesting new perspectives of interpretation. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu leads us to fresh, exciting insights and a deeper understanding of issues that are of central concern in the field of wisdom theology research. In Proverbs 1 - 9, wisdom theology is redefined from an ubuntu perspective. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu thus leads us to a new development within wisdom theology. It helps us appreciate the new emphasis on communality. This does not happen in isolation. i1Ji1' m~tl'is identified as the primal source of wisdom. It must be regarded, however, in combination with the emphasis on living in communion with others. The essence of the new understanding - an existential understanding of wisdom - leads us towards appreciating the interrelatedness between human beings. Creation theology can be understood as deed/consequence theology, where the intimate relationship between experiencing divine awe and living in communion with others becomes evident. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu redefines the deed/consequence or causality aspect of wisdom theology as the "goal" of the wise. It is not the aim of this dissertation to copy some previously developed theological approach from one context into another, but rather to stimulate creative hermeneutical thinking with regard to African views on Old Testament wisdom literature. In this study we come to the conclusion that Afrocentric hermeneutics has the potential to be more responsive to the context of the Old Testament wisdom literature than Western theological exegesis has been.
Die wysheidsteologie in Spreuke I - 9 word geherdefinieer vanuit 'n ubuntu-perspektief.

With the growing need for efficiency, cost reduction, reduced disposition of outdated electronics components as well as scalable electronics components, and also reduced health effects of our daily usage of electronics components. Recent trend in technology has seen companies manufacturing these products thinking in the mentioned needs when manufacturing and virtualizations is one important aspect of it. The need to share resources, the need to use lesser workspace, the need to reduce cost of purchase and manufacturing are all part of achievements of virtualization techniques. For some people, setting up a computer to run different virtual machines at the same time can be difficult especially if they have no prior basic knowledge of working in terminal environment and hiring a skilled personnel to do the job can be expensive. The motivation for this thesis is to help people with little or no basic knowledge on how to set up virtual machine with Ubuntu operating system on XEN hypervisor.

Duvenage, Amy Lisa. "Challenges to Ubuntu and social cohesion in South Africa." Thesis, Kingston University, 2015. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/35844/.

Full text
Abstract:
Envisaged as vehicle for social cohesion in post revolutionary South Africa, ubuntu means 'humanness' and 'goodness' ; however, the optimistic post-apartheid discourse of ubuntu contrasts with the bleak post-apartheid fictions. These reflect a social and political landscape that does not live up to the optimistic ideology of the Rainbow Nation. This thesis argues that ubuntu - as a 'return to tradition' - is a problematic narrative of social cohesion because as an innate and essential aspect of African identity, ubuntu risks cultural simplification, it depends on ideas of racial polarization and the homogenisation of black African culture, and it legitimises the implementation of coercive social practices. The major literary texts examined are Zakes Mda's novels 'The heart of redness' (2002) and 'Ways of dying' (1995), Sindiwe Magona's 'Living, loving and lying awake at night' (1991). 'To my children's children' (1991), 'Forced to grow' (1991) and 'Mother to mother' (1998). Kgebetli Moele's 'Room 2017' (2011) and 'The book of the dead' (2009), Phaswanr Mpe's 'Welcome to our hillbrow' (2001), K. Sello Duiker's 'Thirteen cents' (2008) and Kopana Motlwa's 'Coconut' (2007). Each of the four chapters addresses ubuntu in relation to differences that are already embedded in discourses of ubuntu: that is, 'modernity' and 'tradition', gender, rural-urban migration, and the occult. These subject positions are then embedded in wider contemporary debates about a nation in transition: post-apartheid South Africa and where necessary the apartheid past. Ubuntu fails to offer a coherent programme for political change and now functions as a floating or empty signifier.

Muller, Cornelia Magrietha (Carla). "Facilitating young children’s understanding of Ubuntu using creative drama." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/80487.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Manifesto on Values (2001), Ubuntu is depicted as one of the ten democratic values and the Department of Education (DoE, 2001) portrays it as one of the most important values to promote citizenry. Ubuntu provides a sense of belonging to a wider community and encourages a child citizen to live as a responsible and constructive member. Utilising a qualitative research mode of inquiry, with an action research approach enabled me to collaboratively design of a socially constructed learning experience, with subject specialists. We explored the value of creative drama to teach Ubuntu as an abstract concept to Grade 3 learners. The focus of this study was on conceptualisation and not the implementation. These learners were exposed to creative drama, however for this study they did not actively engage in any creative drama activities. The main data generation techniques that had been used in this study were semi-structured interviews with a panel of subject experts, after which they had also completed a rubric to convey the strengths and weaknesses of the designed learning experience. This was done in a cyclic manner; as embedded in action research to strengthen the idea of action research already mentioned. From the study and the results of the study, it had become evident that creative drama could be used to strengthen school learners’ understanding of Ubuntu and to incorporate it in their everyday lives to become progressive child citizens and leaders within South Africa. By using the input and knowledge of expert participants, it had also become evident that learning could be made fun and would most likely then be more effective.

Mashasha, Tamsanqa Munyaradzi. "The critical implications of Ubuntu for contemporary management theory." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013116.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the dissolution of apartheid, corporate governance in South Africa has evolved from being a soft mainly ethical issue to a hard knowledge-based technological issue, recognised as pivotal to the success and revitalisation of the country’s capital markets and, ultimately, the prospects of the corporate economy. These high stakes have produced a succession of measures aimed at transforming corporate governance in the economy. As such, South Africa’s corporate managers are consistently faced with the seemingly unassailable obstacle of discerning and implementing technologically progressive and culturally/racially unbiased management strategies/systems. The focus of this thesis is the latter of these two obstacles. Ubuntu acts as the scope via which the issues embedded within the incumbent management strategies/systems are viewed. Ubuntu philosophy embodies a socio-cultural framework that applies to all individuals and institutions throughout the continent. It embodies collectivism and teamwork, creation of synergies and competitive advantages, humanist leadership styles and maturity, consensus in decision-making systems, effective communication, and community-based corporate social responsibility. Ubuntu is pervasive in almost all parts of Southern African continent – it is integrated into all aspects of day-to-day life throughout the region. This thesis reviews and analyses some of the lessons that can be learned through the inception of African management, more specifically Ubuntu management, within South Africa’s corporate sphere. This thesis aims to prove that there exists a need for a new South African corporate management system, one which is able to harmoniously integrate the incumbent, western-orientated management strategies and systems with one of African origins.

Furman, Katherine Elizabeth. "Exploring the possibility of an Ubuntu-based political philosophy." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002003.

Full text
Abstract:
It is typically said that there are two questions that political philosophy seeks to address: ‘who gets what?’ and ‘who decides on who gets what?’ South Africa, along with much of the rest of the world, has answered the second question badly and currently ranks as one of the world’s most unequal societies. Counter-intuitively, South Africa maintains a social-political order that (re)produces this inequality along with great enthusiasm for ubuntu, an African ethic that at a minimum requires that we treat each other humanely. However, due to the view that ubuntu has been co-opted in support of South Africa’s unjust system, ubuntu has largely been ignored by radical thinkers. The aim of this thesis is therefore to explore the possibility of an ubuntu-based political philosophy, with the core assumption that political philosophy is rooted in ethical theory. Three tasks are therefore undertaken in this thesis. Firstly, ubuntu is articulated as an ethic. Secondly, it is compared to similar Western ethical theories in order to determine if there are distinguishing characteristics that make ubuntu a more appropriate founding ethic for South African political philosophy. Finally, whether ubuntu can find real-world applicability will be assessed by looking at the way ubuntu has been used in the law

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative research study was to gain a deeper understanding of Ubuntu, and how relationships within the leadership-follower exchange can be harnessed and maintained with Ubuntu as a leadership approach. The study aimed to explore the relational nature between leaders and followers, in the context of leadership being co-created through the interconnected relationships and richly interactive contexts within the business context. The study was based on Leadership as a social process, which entails interaction and collaboration between leaders and stakeholders, and was set in the context of working teams within organisations as well as in project teams in the construction sector. A qualitative and exploratory research method was used to interview ten construction professionals in leader as well as follower positions in the construction sector of South Africa. Ten semi-structured in?depth interviews were conducted to find answers to the research questions that explored how Ubuntu can be relevant in the business context as a relational style of leadership in as far as it impacts leader-follower exchanges. The key findings of the research are that respondents displayed an understanding of Ubuntu and its relevance in the context of business. Respondents related Ubuntu to collaboration between companies and consultants in their approach to sourcing and delivering of projects. An Ubuntu and Leader Member Exchange Model was developed using the values, behaviours and character traits of Ubuntu, and characteristics of high quality Leader Member Exchange relationship working teams.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I consider ubuntu as a metonym for the particularly African features of South African philosophy. Given that Mbembe critiques African philosophy in general as having failed because it has been subsumed under two unreflective political movements in African thought, I consider whether or not the concept of ubuntu escapes his critique. After developing criteria for measuring the success of any philosophical concept, I conclude that ubuntu is unsuccessful. I then identify the political constraints placed on ubuntu that lead to its failure. These constraints arise from having to validate Africa as a place of intellectual worth. Considering the role of place in these constraints, I argue that a far more productive approach to ubuntu (and South African philosophy in general) is to explicitly incorporate this place into our philosophical project. I use the conceptual framework developed by Bruce Janz to provide a systematic account of place that can be used in formulating South African philosophy. I add to Janz, arguing that philosophy is a response to a particular feature of place: the mystery. By incorporating place into ubuntu, I am able to start developing a philosophical concept which can fulfil the political constraints placed on ubuntu without sacrificing its philosophical integrity. I suggest that ubuntu remains an interesting concept primarily because it promises to respond to the fragmentation of the South African place. I conclude by arguing that ubuntu should be used as the basis for a civic religion which responds to the fragmentation of the South African place. This civic religion will give rise to a significantly distinct philosophical tradition which should not succumb to Mbembe’s critique.

In Tenth Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning. Commonwealth of Learning, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56059/pcf10.425.

Full text
Abstract:
Most students in the Master’s in Education- Educational Leadership (MEdEL) at a medium sized Open and distance e-learning institution have successfully completed their programme within the stipulated five years with the average being two to three years. It is postulated that this could be because the supervision of their research is anchored on the philosophy of ubuntu which is an indigenous education philosophy that is gaining traction among African scholars. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the philosophy of ubuntu guides MEdEL students and supervisors in developing the research dissertation. The research objectives were; an analysis the extent to which MEdEL students and supervisors are aware of Ubuntu as an educational philosophy, the extent to which MEdEL research supervisors adhere to the guiding principles of ubuntu when they supervise student dissertations and, recommendations on how ubuntu principles can be incorporated in the research supervision of graduate students in an Open and Distance electronic Learning (ODeL) environment. A mixed methods approach was used in the design, collection and analysis of data using an online questionnaire for students and supervisees, face to face and written interviews of supervisors, and the analysis of literature and key documents associated with the supervision of dissertations. Key data sources included graduate and current students of the MEdEL; research supervisors and literature on ubuntu as an educational philosophy.

Mangwegape, Bridget. "EXPLORING SELECTED SETSWANA DRAMA TEXTS AS THE PRINCIPLE OF UBUNTU/BOTHO IN EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT." In International Conference on Education and New Developments. inScience Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2022v1end004.

Full text
Abstract:
Talking about the importance of Ubuntu/Botho in any educational system “Authentic humanism consists in permitting the emergence of the awareness of full humanity, as a condition and as an obligation, as a situation and as a project”. To inculcate a sense of values at schools, is intended to help young people achieve higher levels of moral judgement. This belief is that education does not exist simply to serve the market, but to serve society, and that means instilling in students a broad sense of values that can emerge only from a balanced exposure to the humanities as well as the sciences. Enriching the individual in this way is, by extension, enriching the society. This carries the involvement within the teaching and assessment of Setswana drama texts with third year (BEd) students. Ubuntu is a Nguni term while Botho is a Setswana term from the Southern African region that means a belief in a universal relationship of sharing that connects all humanity. The researcher takes note of the key element of Ubuntu/Botho, understood as “motho ke motho ka batho” (in Setswana). The English translation of this expression is “a human being is a human being because of other human beings”. The participants in this study were 24 BEd students from the language department. The comprehensive analysis includes data gathered from students: peer observation and interviews. Text analysis was used to analyse and interpret qualitative data obtained through interviews and observations with the aim of investigating the principle of Ubuntu/Botho in the characters of the two drama texts and how could students apply Ubuntu/Botho in their teaching to illustrate each theme.
