De, Wet Daniël Paulus. "Wisdom and Ubuntu : a close reading of Proverbs 1-9 in dialogue with African Ubuntu." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50548.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate that a dialogue can be established between wisdom in Proverbs 1 - 9 and ubuntu. This dialogue becomes evident from a close reading of Proverbs 1 - 9 and from a study of the correspondence between the worldviews found in ancient Israel and Africa respectively. Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu is a Zulu saying that has its equivalent in nearly every sub- Saharan culture. Briefly, it translates to: "A human being is a human being because of (other) human beings." This points to a uniquely African view of human beings. This communal emphasis is also found within the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. The sages of the Old Testament attach great importance to harmony in the community and strongly emphasise obedience to wisdom as a way of accomplishing this harmony. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu is especially challenging from an academic point of view. On the one hand, wisdom highlights valuable aspects of African ways of life, principles and ideas that are often overlooked or ignored. On the other hand, ubuntu holds the promise of a nonwestern tradition that has been misread and marginalised in history, but that is reclaiming its place. A close reading is used to interpret the particular words, images and organisation of the scenes or passages in Proverbs 1 - 9. The interaction between the worldviews of ancient Israel and Africa leads us to further conclusions, identifying gaps in our knowledge and pointing to directions that could be followed in hermeneutics of which scholars have been unaware up to now. It also helps to sharpen the focus on wisdom by suggesting new perspectives of interpretation. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu leads us to fresh, exciting insights and a deeper understanding of issues that are of central concern in the field of wisdom theology research. In Proverbs 1 - 9, wisdom theology is redefined from an ubuntu perspective. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu thus leads us to a new development within wisdom theology. It helps us appreciate the new emphasis on communality. This does not happen in isolation. i1Ji1' m~tl'is identified as the primal source of wisdom. It must be regarded, however, in combination with the emphasis on living in communion with others. The essence of the new understanding - an existential understanding of wisdom - leads us towards appreciating the interrelatedness between human beings. Creation theology can be understood as deed/consequence theology, where the intimate relationship between experiencing divine awe and living in communion with others becomes evident. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu redefines the deed/consequence or causality aspect of wisdom theology as the "goal" of the wise. It is not the aim of this dissertation to copy some previously developed theological approach from one context into another, but rather to stimulate creative hermeneutical thinking with regard to African views on Old Testament wisdom literature. In this study we come to the conclusion that Afrocentric hermeneutics has the potential to be more responsive to the context of the Old Testament wisdom literature than Western theological exegesis has been.
Die wysheidsteologie in Spreuke I - 9 word geherdefinieer vanuit 'n ubuntu-perspektief.

Abstract:
With the growing need for efficiency, cost reduction, reduced disposition of outdated electronics components as well as scalable electronics components, and also reduced health effects of our daily usage of electronics components. Recent trend in technology has seen companies manufacturing these products thinking in the mentioned needs when manufacturing and virtualizations is one important aspect of it. The need to share resources, the need to use lesser workspace, the need to reduce cost of purchase and manufacturing are all part of achievements of virtualization techniques. For some people, setting up a computer to run different virtual machines at the same time can be difficult especially if they have no prior basic knowledge of working in terminal environment and hiring a skilled personnel to do the job can be expensive. The motivation for this thesis is to help people with little or no basic knowledge on how to set up virtual machine with Ubuntu operating system on XEN hypervisor.

Duvenage, Amy Lisa. "Challenges to Ubuntu and social cohesion in South Africa." Thesis, Kingston University, 2015. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/35844/.

Full text
Abstract:
Envisaged as vehicle for social cohesion in post revolutionary South Africa, ubuntu means 'humanness' and 'goodness' ; however, the optimistic post-apartheid discourse of ubuntu contrasts with the bleak post-apartheid fictions. These reflect a social and political landscape that does not live up to the optimistic ideology of the Rainbow Nation. This thesis argues that ubuntu - as a 'return to tradition' - is a problematic narrative of social cohesion because as an innate and essential aspect of African identity, ubuntu risks cultural simplification, it depends on ideas of racial polarization and the homogenisation of black African culture, and it legitimises the implementation of coercive social practices. The major literary texts examined are Zakes Mda's novels 'The heart of redness' (2002) and 'Ways of dying' (1995), Sindiwe Magona's 'Living, loving and lying awake at night' (1991). 'To my children's children' (1991), 'Forced to grow' (1991) and 'Mother to mother' (1998). Kgebetli Moele's 'Room 2017' (2011) and 'The book of the dead' (2009), Phaswanr Mpe's 'Welcome to our hillbrow' (2001), K. Sello Duiker's 'Thirteen cents' (2008) and Kopana Motlwa's 'Coconut' (2007). Each of the four chapters addresses ubuntu in relation to differences that are already embedded in discourses of ubuntu: that is, 'modernity' and 'tradition', gender, rural-urban migration, and the occult. These subject positions are then embedded in wider contemporary debates about a nation in transition: post-apartheid South Africa and where necessary the apartheid past. Ubuntu fails to offer a coherent programme for political change and now functions as a floating or empty signifier.

Muller, Cornelia Magrietha (Carla). "Facilitating young children’s understanding of Ubuntu using creative drama." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/80487.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Manifesto on Values (2001), Ubuntu is depicted as one of the ten democratic values and the Department of Education (DoE, 2001) portrays it as one of the most important values to promote citizenry. Ubuntu provides a sense of belonging to a wider community and encourages a child citizen to live as a responsible and constructive member. Utilising a qualitative research mode of inquiry, with an action research approach enabled me to collaboratively design of a socially constructed learning experience, with subject specialists. We explored the value of creative drama to teach Ubuntu as an abstract concept to Grade 3 learners. The focus of this study was on conceptualisation and not the implementation. These learners were exposed to creative drama, however for this study they did not actively engage in any creative drama activities. The main data generation techniques that had been used in this study were semi-structured interviews with a panel of subject experts, after which they had also completed a rubric to convey the strengths and weaknesses of the designed learning experience. This was done in a cyclic manner; as embedded in action research to strengthen the idea of action research already mentioned. From the study and the results of the study, it had become evident that creative drama could be used to strengthen school learners’ understanding of Ubuntu and to incorporate it in their everyday lives to become progressive child citizens and leaders within South Africa. By using the input and knowledge of expert participants, it had also become evident that learning could be made fun and would most likely then be more effective.

Mashasha, Tamsanqa Munyaradzi. "The critical implications of Ubuntu for contemporary management theory." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013116.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the dissolution of apartheid, corporate governance in South Africa has evolved from being a soft mainly ethical issue to a hard knowledge-based technological issue, recognised as pivotal to the success and revitalisation of the country’s capital markets and, ultimately, the prospects of the corporate economy. These high stakes have produced a succession of measures aimed at transforming corporate governance in the economy. As such, South Africa’s corporate managers are consistently faced with the seemingly unassailable obstacle of discerning and implementing technologically progressive and culturally/racially unbiased management strategies/systems. The focus of this thesis is the latter of these two obstacles. Ubuntu acts as the scope via which the issues embedded within the incumbent management strategies/systems are viewed. Ubuntu philosophy embodies a socio-cultural framework that applies to all individuals and institutions throughout the continent. It embodies collectivism and teamwork, creation of synergies and competitive advantages, humanist leadership styles and maturity, consensus in decision-making systems, effective communication, and community-based corporate social responsibility. Ubuntu is pervasive in almost all parts of Southern African continent – it is integrated into all aspects of day-to-day life throughout the region. This thesis reviews and analyses some of the lessons that can be learned through the inception of African management, more specifically Ubuntu management, within South Africa’s corporate sphere. This thesis aims to prove that there exists a need for a new South African corporate management system, one which is able to harmoniously integrate the incumbent, western-orientated management strategies and systems with one of African origins.

Furman, Katherine Elizabeth. "Exploring the possibility of an Ubuntu-based political philosophy." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002003.

Full text
Abstract:
It is typically said that there are two questions that political philosophy seeks to address: ‘who gets what?’ and ‘who decides on who gets what?’ South Africa, along with much of the rest of the world, has answered the second question badly and currently ranks as one of the world’s most unequal societies. Counter-intuitively, South Africa maintains a social-political order that (re)produces this inequality along with great enthusiasm for ubuntu, an African ethic that at a minimum requires that we treat each other humanely. However, due to the view that ubuntu has been co-opted in support of South Africa’s unjust system, ubuntu has largely been ignored by radical thinkers. The aim of this thesis is therefore to explore the possibility of an ubuntu-based political philosophy, with the core assumption that political philosophy is rooted in ethical theory. Three tasks are therefore undertaken in this thesis. Firstly, ubuntu is articulated as an ethic. Secondly, it is compared to similar Western ethical theories in order to determine if there are distinguishing characteristics that make ubuntu a more appropriate founding ethic for South African political philosophy. Finally, whether ubuntu can find real-world applicability will be assessed by looking at the way ubuntu has been used in the law

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative research study was to gain a deeper understanding of Ubuntu, and how relationships within the leadership-follower exchange can be harnessed and maintained with Ubuntu as a leadership approach. The study aimed to explore the relational nature between leaders and followers, in the context of leadership being co-created through the interconnected relationships and richly interactive contexts within the business context. The study was based on Leadership as a social process, which entails interaction and collaboration between leaders and stakeholders, and was set in the context of working teams within organisations as well as in project teams in the construction sector. A qualitative and exploratory research method was used to interview ten construction professionals in leader as well as follower positions in the construction sector of South Africa. Ten semi-structured in?depth interviews were conducted to find answers to the research questions that explored how Ubuntu can be relevant in the business context as a relational style of leadership in as far as it impacts leader-follower exchanges. The key findings of the research are that respondents displayed an understanding of Ubuntu and its relevance in the context of business. Respondents related Ubuntu to collaboration between companies and consultants in their approach to sourcing and delivering of projects. An Ubuntu and Leader Member Exchange Model was developed using the values, behaviours and character traits of Ubuntu, and characteristics of high quality Leader Member Exchange relationship working teams.

Abstract:
In this thesis I consider ubuntu as a metonym for the particularly African features of South African philosophy. Given that Mbembe critiques African philosophy in general as having failed because it has been subsumed under two unreflective political movements in African thought, I consider whether or not the concept of ubuntu escapes his critique. After developing criteria for measuring the success of any philosophical concept, I conclude that ubuntu is unsuccessful. I then identify the political constraints placed on ubuntu that lead to its failure. These constraints arise from having to validate Africa as a place of intellectual worth. Considering the role of place in these constraints, I argue that a far more productive approach to ubuntu (and South African philosophy in general) is to explicitly incorporate this place into our philosophical project. I use the conceptual framework developed by Bruce Janz to provide a systematic account of place that can be used in formulating South African philosophy. I add to Janz, arguing that philosophy is a response to a particular feature of place: the mystery. By incorporating place into ubuntu, I am able to start developing a philosophical concept which can fulfil the political constraints placed on ubuntu without sacrificing its philosophical integrity. I suggest that ubuntu remains an interesting concept primarily because it promises to respond to the fragmentation of the South African place. I conclude by arguing that ubuntu should be used as the basis for a civic religion which responds to the fragmentation of the South African place. This civic religion will give rise to a significantly distinct philosophical tradition which should not succumb to Mbembe’s critique.

Abstract:
The new internet protocol, IPv6 is differently structured and has a larger header compared to its predecessor, IPv4. This report examines the two protocols performance, in regard of transfer, jitter, packet loss and CPU-load on the two operating systems, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10:10. The survey was conducted by means of experiments and measurements to show which protocol and operating system that accomplishes the best performance. The measurement tool used in the experiments was Iperf. The result shows that the earlier protocol, IPv4, performs slightly better than its replacement in most measurements, such as transmission capacity and packet loss. The results also shows that Windows 7 has a higher CPU-load than Ubuntu on several occasions in the experiments.

Mpofu, Sonnyboy Mosana. "Effectivity and productivity in education : an Ubuntu perspective / Mpofu Sonnyboy Mosana." Thesis, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/812.

Abstract:
This study investigated the possibility of how Ubuntu can restore affectivity and productivity in education by focusing on: + The essential elements of the Ubuntu principle + Education from an Ubuntu perspective + The role of Ubuntu in restoring affectivity and productivity in education + "Motho ke motho" contours towards introducing Ubuntu in education To achieve these objectives, a literature study was undertaken through which primary as well as secondary sources were consulted. The essential elements of the Ubuntu principle that were discovered, include concepts like "enhlonipho"(respect), fellowship, caring, being sensitive to the plight of others, sharing and human dignity. It was discovered that these Ubuntu values could be used to resolve problems of discipline and non-caring attitude that disrupts effective and productive education in South Africa. From the review of literature, it was discovered that education from Ubuntu perspective, could teach people collective solidarity values through the promotion of respect for norms and values, commitment to work and its potential to promote a sense of belonging, discipline, community involvement and instilling self-reliance. Ubuntu philosophy, with its social structures such as, "letsema", in Setswana, or "nhimbe" in Shona, which means a work-party wherein an individual would invite fellow villagers to help him/her to perform a particular task, traditional beer and food were prepared for people. The leadership for managing work of the day was shared among people with specific talent. The extended families institution, believed in the understanding that implies that ordinary people and not only the government, could do things on their own using the traditional institutions. It was also discovered that the philosophy of Ubuntu, with its principle of "We are and therefore I am", can encourage a way of thinking that reminds people to think with regard to the plight of others sharing with them, regarding them as brothers/sisters and involving them in collective actions. The possibility of providing contours that could help in introducing Ubuntu in education was exploited and concepts such as, imbizo, collaboration and collective responsibility were discovered. Finally, certain recommendations are made on the basis of the findings and conclusions of the previous chapters. These include: Educators, as the most important role players, should be trained in Ubuntu education, parents should revive the traditional institutions that can be relevant to the modern demands, and Ubuntu should be integrated into the school curriculum.

Mutsonziwa, Itayi. "Ubuntu : development and validation of a scale to measure African humanism." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/79761.

Full text
Abstract:
Ubuntu is an African humanist philosophy described by the Nguni aphorism “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” which translates as a person is a person through other people. While Ubuntu has been a domain of extensive scholarly research, to date almost all of this work has been philosophical or conceptual; by contrast, there is a dearth of empirical research examining the nature of Ubuntu. Scholars provide indicator values, namely descriptive abstract nouns, of Ubuntu with no consistency in how the indicator values were derived because the concept lacks a clear definition. The challenges arising from the lack of a clear definition of Ubuntu can be attributed to the fact that there is no empirical research that has been conducted to develop a reliable and valid measure of Ubuntu. This research operationalised Ubuntu by developing a psychometrically reliable and valid scale for measuring Ubuntu. The research established the underlying dimensions of Ubuntu. This thesis develops and validates a scale to measure Ubuntu using a mixed-methods, multiple study approach. First, a literature review identifies 82 indicator values of Ubuntu. Next, using focus groups, depth interviews, and q-sorting, three nascent components of Ubuntu emerge: humanness, interconnectedness, and compassion. Finally, across three quantitative studies, the scale is purified to seventeen items which exhibit a three-factor structure that is psychometrically reliable and valid. The Ubuntu scale has discriminant validity relative to a collectivism scale and demonstrates predictive validity in terms of charitable and altruistic behaviours. This study contributes towards the development of theory through conceptualisation of Ubuntu. The current study utilised large sample sizes to replicate the factor structure, reliability, and construct validity of the measure including nomological validity assessment and measurement invariance.

Buqa, Wonke. "Ubuntu values in an emerging multi-racial community : a narrative reflection." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61210.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the meaning of the African philosophy of Ubuntu in an emerging multi-racial community within the new context of democracy in South Africa from a narrative research perspective. South Africa has been embedded with notions of tribalism, homelands, segregation, racism, violence which have origins and ethnological prejudices mirrored in colonialism and apartheid. This dissertation is broadly shaped by the following three questions: • Is the concept of Ubuntu applicable in a multiracial community? • South Africa is viewed as an unequal society in terms of socio-economics, racial prejudice and resulting in political instability. How does this inequality affect people's relationships with one another and with the leaders in a diverse community? • How do people living in a multi-racial society in a post-democratic country perceive peace, forgiveness, the ideal of a Rainbow Nation and reconciliation in their communities? To appropriate the meaning of Ubuntu through narrative research in a multiracial community, the researcher embarked on a qualitative research, social constructionism, postmodernism and postfoundationalism in specific reference to the community of Olievenhoutsbosch Township. This is one of the rare urban townships in South Africa where almost all the races, classes, socio-economic statutes, ethnic groupings and foreigners are found. This study proceeded from a narrative research approach to listen to the stories of people living in this township. The aim of the research was to understand how meaning was being constructed with regard to Ubuntu. Ubuntu was frequently mentioned by the co-researchers as the African philosophy embracing 'Batho Pele' (People first), Rainbow Nation, peace, forgiveness and reconciliation in South Africa. The study traces the historical experiences of human settlement from colonialism, apartheid to post-apartheid. The research proceeded to transversal interdisciplinary conversation where academics from the fields of Clinical Psychology, Political Sciences and Education, reflected their voices. The study concludes with findings, reflections and recommendations that Ubuntu is essential for human beings and the lack of Ubuntu results to corruption in South Africa.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines four different public archaeology projects in South Africa, and poses questions related to how archaeology is defined and mediated by educational centres and museums in South Africa. The museums have a rather traditional way of mediating archaeological knowledge to a broader public, but they do include exhibitions that invite visitors to interpret human history themselves. The educational centres, on the other hand, are considered to be a category below the traditional museum, where the content is developed in collaboration with indigenous people, and the knowledge about former peoples is mediated by the indigenous people themselves, as part of an objective to develop employment opportunities for marginalised community groups. While educational centres have developed out of this collaboration with indigenous communities, mueseums were established during the colonial period of South Africa. The educational centres are a collaboration between  experts and non-experts, and have an inclusive approach. Museums, in contrast, develop their content based on the experts´knowledge, for the visitor and not with the visitor. However, it is evident that visitors are intended to have a dialogue with the exhibition. An inclusive approach is preferble, where experts and non-experts are on the same level, show mutual respect for each other, and are open to learning from each other. A significant issue that public archaeologists face is that each public project is unique. This means that new methods and ideas are needed for each project. Four different projects have been visited and examined, and it was found that all four projects were unique in terms of the issues that they faced and in terms of how the professionals solve those problems in specific ways adapted to each unigue project. On the one hand, the question of what a successful public project is or can be remains, but on the other hand, it is clear that a well-established collaboration and an understanding for each other is needed to develop a successful public work. In South African terms a succssesful public work could be termed "Ubuntu archaeology", where the word "Ubuntu" is interpretes as Desmond Tutu put it in 1994, where both parties experience each other as equal.

Abstract:
Package management in Linux systems is a popular way to install and update software and the de facto standard on Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RedHat, CentOS and OpenSUSE. The software provided in the repositories can however differ when it comes to fixing vulnerabilities since package maintainers in some cases must implement some specific changes to the source used to build the software to make it compatible with the Linux system it is intended to be executed on. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) standard provides a way to compare how fixes for vulnerabilities is handled on each Linux system where this work is aimed to examine if there exists different patterns when it comes to the time in days it took for a fix to emerge in the changelog for the software. This data is collected by using scripts in Linux to iterate through the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) which contains CVE entries, the severity score in terms of the impact of the vulnerability and references to which systems that the vulnerability affects. The dates are collected by using another script that iterates through the changelog of all available packages and saves the earliest date when the fix was issued. The results show that there is not enough statistical significance to reliably determine if a difference existed between the Linux distributions except when comparing OpenSUSE with Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora where significance was found which suggests that further study is needed. The comparison showed that Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora was slightly better than RedHat on average regarding the time windows between when a CVE was published to when a fix was mentioned in the changelog and OpenSUSE was slower than all other Linux distributions.

The object of development is the operation of the server for this purpose of the project. Several technologies were used to create the project: nest.js - a framework for writing the server part, docker - to create a database container, postgresql - a database and auxiliary libraries. The programs described above are the most popular in their field and in my opinion easy to use. The purpose of this work is: - Demonstrate the capabilities of this technology stack to address such issues. - Improving the mastery of these tools. In recent years, the creation of web applications and server parts has changed a lot. There are many powerful tools that compete closely with each other. In the world of technology there is a great variety of devices from which users can use web applications. At the same time, users are using more resources and programmers need to focus on a growing scale of technology when writing code. At the time of writing, such developments in technology have been taken into account.

Holtzhausen, Herman. "Land and Ubuntu as competing narratives in rural South Africa : a practical theological perspective." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64316.

Full text
Abstract:
Agricultural land ownership, tenure and access in South Africa are historically determined along racial lines. Reactions to this untenable problem are becoming increasingly volatile. More than two decades into South Africa’s constitutional democracy, little has changed to empower the previously disadvantaged majority of South Africans in this regard. The resentment about this institutionalised discrimination and poverty is growing in the wake of government’s failures to meaningfully address the situation. For many Black South Africans, this remains a symbol of their dehumanisation by the previous racist government and its supporting voters. I am a sixth generation land owner of a small-scale farming operation in the arid North West Province of South Africa. This research represents my efforts in searching for ways of creating a more equal and just relationship with my Tswana co-worker in terms of his access and tenure of land. In the final instance, this work would hopefully be of value to farmers and their labourers in similar contexts. I engaged a narrative enquiry based on social constructionism, employing postfoundational practical theology as interpreted and developed by Műller in his 7-steps to participate in this action research. Auto-ethnography and fictional research writing enabled me to problematise a dominant narrative that has become increasingly one-dimensional. According to this narrative, Whites stole the land at gunpoint or through trickery. Political leaders with varying agendas are prone to abusing this version of our past to the advancement of their self-enrichment and patronage networks. My methodology of choice offered the opportunity to establish a non-dominant narrative, using the particulars of this context to create a preferred outcome. I created a revisionist understanding of ubuntu as ‘right action’, which is helpful in securing Joba’s access and tenure to the land. Current affairs in terms of State Capture and other narratives that are dynamically related to this course of events, thicken the plot to such an extent that it causes strain between ubuntu and land reform. I engaged mindfulness as my chosen spirituality to create harmony rather than competition between land and ubuntu. Subsequently, it seems that Joba and my working partnership can be beneficial for both of us and also for other land owners and their co-labourers, particularly, when operated as a share scheme.

Tauetsile, Joy Oletetswe. "Employee engagement : extension of the job demands resource (JD-R) model with the Ubuntu construct." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2016. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/24979/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study contributes to our understanding of the moderation and mediation processes through which job demands, job resources and employee engagement are linked with desired organizational behavioural outcomes [intention to turnover (IT) and affective commitment (AC)]. The study extends the JD-R model with a typical culturally specific African construct, Ubuntu, in order to increase its relevance to the African context. Mediation and moderation analysis were used to test the hypothesised relationships in two cross sectional samples of 175 public sector and 263 private sector employees. Results revealed that organizational based self-esteem (OBSE) and distributive justice (DJ) were positively related to engagement (for public sector employees) and OBSE, DJ and colleague support (CS) were positively related to engagement (for private sector employees). For both sectors combined, OBSE, DJ and job autonomy (JA) were positively related to engagement. The findings supported mediation of employee engagement between DJ and intention to turnover and OBSE and affective commitment for public sector whereas for private sector, mediation of employee engagement between OBSE, DJ, CS and intention to turnover was not supported whereas engagement mediated the relationship between DJ and affective commitment for private sector. For both private and public sector, engagement mediated the relationship between JA, DJ and intention to turnover and the relationship between OBSE, JA and DJ and affective commitment. Moreover, Ubuntu construct was positively related with engagement in both private and public sector employees. Expectedly, Ubuntu mediated the relationship between supervisor support (SS) and employee engagement for all sectors. However surprisingly, mediation of Ubuntu between CS and engagement was not supported. There were no statistically significant interactions for both sectors suggesting that, contrary to the JD-|R model, job demands do not moderate the relationship between resources and employee engagement. Overall, the findings suggest that specific job resources could be provided for each sector to improve engagement and employee engagement could be used as a mechanism to explain the relationship between resources (job and personal) and desired organizational behaviour outcomes (IT and AC) . More importantly Ubuntu construct is positively related to employee engagement and can also be used to explain the relationship between supervisor support, colleague support and employee engagement. Implications for Human Resource Management research and practice are highlighted and directions for future research discussed.

Theletsane, Kula Ishmael. "Developing a conceptual model for transformation at the South African Military Academy : the Ubuntu approach." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/18706.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The initial conceptual framework for transformation proposes the context (why), the content (what), and the process (how) as three dimensions of transformation that are always present. A distinction is made between external and internal triggers of transformation, and information is provided on the challenges posed by, among others, the knowledge society, globalisation, and changing market conditions that require companies to become learning organisations staffed by empowered knowledge workers. Literature study on transformation clearly shows that transformation brings about change. There are different models on transformation and this shows that there are different approaches to transformation. Ubuntu should be introduced as a way forward for the South African Military Academy (SAMA) to deal with transformation issues. Ubuntu is more concern about the wellbeing of the people and their morale during and after transformation has been implemented. Subsequently, a conceptual model for transformation is proposed in which generic elements of the “why”, “what”, and “how” dimensions are included. The SAMA model is developed to fit the scope of a conceptual model, and to be in line with what is generally proposed in the literature for organisations that want to transform in order to become market leaders and enhance long-term goals. Conclusions drawn from the ongoing SAMA transformation process are that its aims and principles are not in line with what appears to be required in creating an innovative learning organisation. With regard to the “how” of transformation, it is found that improvement is still needed to the processes to change attitudes, mindsets, and styles on the part of managers as well as employees that might inhibit empowerment and stifle creativity and innovation.

Pingue, Kahmaria. "Dancing Into Ubuntu: Inquiring Into Pre-Service Teachers' Experiences of Kpanlogo, A West African Dance." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/38089.

Abstract:
This thesis questions what it was like for pre-service teachers registered in a Bachelor of Education program to experience Kpanlogo, a West African dance from Ghana. Over a period of two years, the primary researcher introduced this dance to her peers first as a pre-service teacher, and then as a graduate student in a variety of ways: 1) practicing it for a performance at a community building talent show on campus, 2) learning it through a professional development workshop, and 3) teaching it to intermediate students at a local school, on two different occasions. Five pre-service teachers responded to an invitation to participate in a phenomenological study about their experiences. The two research questions which guided the interviews were: 1) What was it like to experience Kpanlogo, a West African dance, as a pre-service teacher? 2) What was it like as a pre-service teacher to teach students Kpanlogo? The conceptual framework of Sankofa Cyclical Waves, situated in a collectivist African Worldview orients us to the philosophy of Ubuntu, which posits that humanness is found and cultivated within community. Sankofa, a Ghanaian proverb which encourages its people to go back, physically or spiritually, to retrieve what was once lost or forgotten was used as a particular path to analyze the lived experiences of the pre-service teachers. In this thesis the Sankofa Cyclical Waves provided a structure to identify their various levels of understanding Ubuntu. Experiences analyzed as being novice in nature were awkward at the start, then as the dancer moves towards the end of the continuum, towards Ubuntu, the dancer moves through a series of waves as they become more familiar with rhythms, movements, African dance attire, and becoming a part of the whole; the Other‘s community.

Abstract:
Summary: There is strong evidence suggesting that diabetes mellitus (DM) triples the risk of tuberculosis (TB) disease and worsens TB outcomes. South Africa carries a heavy burden of TB which is primarily driven by the human deficiency virus (HIV). The burden of non-communicable disease is also growing rapidly in South Africa. There is however lack of up to date data on the burden of DM and the associated risk factors among TB patients. This dissertation is based on a cross-sectional study which sought to assess the prevalence of DM and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and determine the risk factors associated with DM among TB patients. Methods: This cross sectional study forms part of a case control study that aimed to assess the association between DM and TB and the population attributable risk of TB due to DM in Khayelitsha, a high HIV and TB setting. The TB patients recruited in the case control study formed the population of this current cross-sectional study. Based on oral glucose tolerance test, fasting blood glucose, glycated haemoglobin and self-report the prevalence of DM was determined. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess risk factors associated DM among TB patients. Due to significant differences between male and females with respect to various characteristics, we also stratified the data by sex during analysis.

Muller, Roger Joseph. "Perceptions regarding the impact of ubuntu and servant leadership on employee engagement in the workplace." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/19409.

Full text
Abstract:
South Africa have some of the lowest employee engagement scores in the world. Leadership is a key determinant of employee engagement, but existing leadership theories and practices are often ineffective in more humanistic and collectivistic cultures like South Africa. To this end, Ubuntu and servant leadership is posited to positively influence organisational performance by increasing employee engagement. The primary objective of this study is to investigate perceptions regarding the impact of Ubuntu and servant leadership on employee engagement in private organisations of the Eastern Cape. A quantitative research design was utilised and yielded 428 usable questionnaires through nonprobability sampling. The empirical results revealed that the spirit of solidarity dimension of Ubuntu leadership influenced significantly and positively. Furthermore, it was found that survival and spirit of solidarity had a significant and positive influence on organisational performance as measured through the balanced scorecard (BSC). Servant leadership positively and significantly influenced employee engagement and organisational performance. In addition, it was found that employee engagement mediates the relationship between servant leadership and organizational performance. This study has made several significant empirical and theoretical contributions, and can be classified as one of the pioneering attempts to gather empirical evidence on how Ubuntu manifests in the workplace. The high convergent validity of the dimensions of Ubuntu leadership and comparisons to Servant leadership established in this study, provides some proof of its novel contribution towards leadership theory. A highly reliable and valid measuring instrument was developed to evaluate Ubuntu from a leadership perspective. This is a major empirical contribution as, at the time, there were no reliable scales available in South Africa to measure Ubuntu leadership.

This is a qualitative study that explores meanings around fatherhood among Xhosa fathers in Cape Town. In so doing, the dissertation goes on to explore attitudes, beliefs, and needs of these township fathers have with regards to taking care of their children. This is a descriptive and exploratory qualitative study which was conducted with a sample of 4 Xhosa fathers. Responses around fathering clustered into the following themes: challenging notions of nurturing as women's roles, changing patterns in fatherhood, fatherhood as a process, multiple ways of fathering, communal and familial support structures, and deviation from ‘traditional' norms and ‘traditional' ideas around fathering. The fathers in this study identified a number of benefits and opportunities to being good fathers who were actively involved in their children's lives.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the role that African indigenous value systems, Ubuntu in particular, could play in building a reconciled South Africa. In doing so a discourse analysis on Ubuntu is conducted and its potential in facilitating social cohesion in the quest for nation building. Specific focus is drawn on higher education an important task if we are to consider the accusation that higher education like its society, is still undergoing transformation and is under pressure to provide quality education for all people whilst also considering the large numbers of cultures that exist. For much needs to be done in redressing the imbalances caused by the apartheid education system which was organized according to racial lines. In doing so, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is utilised as a case study with narrative presentations of how students perceive this traditional African value and its applicability to reconciliation in a post conflict society. For seemingly, there is something inherently important about this value in that it has been invoked and referred to in many important instances in South African history.

Abstract:
This study is based on the moral philosophy and theory of African humanness termed ubuntu. A qualitative methodology has been adopted to interpret ubuntu in the light of, and in contrast to the Eurocentrisim of human rights law, particularly as contained in the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. The study identifies the inconsistencies in the African Charter and the weaknesses in the jurisprudence of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights. The researcher argues that inconsistencies and weaknesses arise due to the absence of an interpretive framework in the African Charter. Ubuntu is proposed as an interpretive framework at the hand of which the provisions of the Charter can be read and interpreted. Research shows that ubuntu aligns itself with the historical experiences and human rights values of the African continent. It is in line with the aspirations and intents of the drafters of the African Charter and more importantly, ubuntu has proved to be capable of promoting and protecting the rights and interests of a society without jeopardizing the rights and interests of the individual. It also has the potential of an harmonious balance between an individual s duties and his rights or needs. In conclusion, the researcher contends that with the adoption of ubuntu as an interpretive framework of the African Charter, those humanist aspirations of the African Charter which have so far been igored, can be achieved.

The subject of the thesis is to write the configuration for the website. The configuration must work on all platforms like Linux, Windows, Mac OS. Docker is a very handy tool for managing isolated Linux containers. With this tool, you can run the operating system processes in an isolated environment based on specially created images. The purpose of the work is: -Design the system using a virtualization system using the Docker tool, which includes the development and configuration of the configuration. -Configuration development for automated load balancing. -Ability to adjust the percentage of users coming to the site. For example, in the banking system, there are two versions, one of which is a beta version of the site, the other is an old stable version. This is necessary so that testers on large projects spend less resources and time on tests. The average time to visit the bank's website is about 30 minutes. In recent years, application and website developers have wanted their product to run stably on multiple platforms. It started up and deployed quickly in a short time. Once you spend time on the configuration, and then use it in several projects where it is needed, greatly simplifies development.

Abstract:
Magister Theologiae - MTh
In the theoretical study of Ethics much emphasis has traditionally been placed on established ethical theories, via approaches typified e.g. as deontological, divine command, utilitarian, virtue ethics and natural ethics. At UWC all these approaches, very much entrenched in the Western academic canon, have been taught, together with ethical views carried by the world religions. Over the last few years, however, an interest in the study of African ideas (philosophy, theology, worldview studies, especially around the elusive but fascinating concept of Ubuntu) has grown. This study is an attempt to make a contribution towards a more serious exchange with African ethical ideas and their application in a global context. In this mini-thesis I compare the views of two academics, Augustine Shutte and Thaddeus Metz, who have actively and deliberately worked in the field of African philosophy and ethics. Through this comparative study of two rather different readings of Ubuntu philosophy, I wish to contribute to the growing interest in ethical views and discourse emanating from African ways of looking at the world and at humanity. The well-known, recently deceased, Augustine Shutte, a Catholic scholar of repute, taught Philosophy at the University of Cape Town, and published books such as Philosophy for Africa, The Mystery of Humanity; Ubuntu, An ethic for a New South Africa and The Quest for Humanity in Science and Religion, The South African Experience. The other scholar, the American born philosopher Thaddeus Metz, started teaching Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg and shifted his intellectual attention to African ideas and ethics. Coming from a rational Kantian approach, mixed with utilitarian ethical concerns, Metz discovered the difficulty of adding another “African mix” to main stream academia, based on the comprehensive scope of the very inclusive look at what it means to be human in the quite unique African worldview. He has published widely and in depth on many aspects of this “clash of cultures” while also holding on to enlightenment ideals and an ongoing conversation with science, especially also social science. These two authors thus share many concerns and interests, but also represent two different angles and approaches into African philosophy and ethics. The question for this limited study is formulated in the short introduction: How do Shutte and Metz connect the ethical implications of a widely shared “African worldview” with the core idea of Ubuntu, and which ethical implications do they draw from their reading of Ubuntu – for Africa and the world? These questions are addressed via five chapters: In the first an introduction to the research focus and question and the second of these the field of African Philosophy and Ethics is briefly covered via appropriate literature, thus providing a framework for comparing Shutte and Metz. The third chapter deals with Shutte’s search for an Ubuntu approach to South Africa’s problems within the African and global context - via his emphasis on an inclusive anthropology of caring and justice in which the pitfalls of individualism, materialism and consumerism can be avoided while promoting a sustainable work ethos and attunement with “science”. The fourth chapter focuses on Metz’ critical deontological approach, and his attempt to take the comprehensive African worldview seriously in conversation with utility, reason and science. In the fifth chapter the comparison of these two overlapping, but still quite different with an approach that can lead to a concrete ethical conclusion and application for South Africa, Africa and the world.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Philosophy))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
The Philosophy of Poverty and the Ethics of Ubuntu The question posed in this article is if and how the ethics of ubuntu could play a role in poverty eradication in a capitalist economic system. I address this question by investigating a specific poverty eradication project proposal called Pela Nambu, aimed at utilising the principle of participation that exists in the “second economy”, combined with the instruments of wealth creation of the “first economy”. After describing and expanding the Pela Nambu approach, I interrogate some of its main assumptions, and find that the ethics of ubuntu does not really have a chance to be mainstreamed as the philosophy of poverty has to reckon with the fact that the multinational corporation is the dominant institution of our time. For Pela Nambu to succeed, “first economy” participation will need to be in the form of partnerships and not charity. The present Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility performance of companies is not encouraging. Yet, the new Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment codes and the increased marketability of differentiated products does offer an opportunity that initiatives like Pela Nambu could fruitfully explore. From hauntology to a new animism? Nature and culture in Heinz Kimmerle’s intercultural philosophy Derrida has proposed a new spectrology in an attempt to deal with the ghost of Marx. Kimmerle shows that Marx has forgotten nature, and enquires about Derrida’s forgetting Marx’s forgetting. With specific reference to African culture he asks whether a new animism should not be explored within the framework of a new spectrology. Derrida uses the concept animism, but not in terms of the being of things in and of themselves, which could positively be thought as animated. Kimmerle proposes a way in which Western philosophy could be opened to African philosophy in order to understand the problem of animated nature more adequately. African philosophy has a concept of the universe of spiritual forces, in which nature and its powers are completely integrated. This paper explores these issues in dialogue with a number of African philosophers, while linking them to certain contestations within environmental philosophy and ethics, especially Murray Bookchin’s critique of spirit-talk in Deep Ecology. Kimmerle’s work on the relationship between Africa and Hegel sets the scene for an elaboration of his re-evaluation of animism which is compared to the ground-breaking hypothesis of Bird-David. A relational epistemology is understood in ethical terms, and it is implied that such an epistemology would be more adequate for a new humanism that would be new in going beyond the western tradition, and in the process gain a more inclusive concept of ‘person’ and ‘community’. The community and the individual in Western and African thought: Implications for knowledge production The tension between the group and the individual is a pervasive condition of humanity that is resolved differently in Western and African knowledge systems. The polarity of “I think therefore I am” versus “I am because we are” does not do justice to the role of the individual in African knowledge systems, and recent attempts in Western philosophy to ormulate a “philosophy of we”. A contextual philosophy of knowledge production is concerned about the we as the carrier of traditions. It is a philosophy of the in-between cultures and knowledge systems that is engaged in dialogues aimed at the formulation of universals. Intercultural (or contextual) philosophy becomes the ‘contemporary idiom’ within which to express ‘the cluster of humanist principles which underlie the traditional African society’ (Nkrumah).

Abstract:
The main purpose of our study was to gain a deeper understanding of how culture influences the interpretation of ethical leadership by both leaders and followers in Zambia and Sweden. The study was conducted using an interpretative narrative inquiry with a small sample of ten participants (i.e. leaders and followers) selected using a purposive sampling method. The participants were drawn from six small and medium local authorities in Sweden (three medium size Kommuns) and Zambia (Two municipalities and one District Council). The empirical data was collected using semi-structured interview guides with interview sessions lasting 45 minutes on average. The data collected was transcribed and analyzed using narrative and thematic analysis. Based on this analysis, we came up with four main themes regarding the interpretation of ethical leadership by leaders and followers, and these are: Morality, Law, Humanity and Nature which constitute our Culture-Ethical Leadership interpretation model.   The empirical narratives demonstrated some similarities in the interpretation of ethical leadership between leaders and followers in Sweden and Zambia. The leaders and followers from both countries affiliated ethical leadership to morality, humanity, adherence to the law, and, caring and protecting nature. Our research also led us to conclude that there is a degree of variance in the interpretation of ethical leadership which relates to the differences in the cultural contexts. In Zambia, leaders and followers show high inclination to the law as being ethical which is reflected in Bello (2012)’s statement that failure to follow rules and regulations is a manifestation of unethical leadership while in Sweden, leaders and followers are inclined to high morality and humanity influenced by high levels of trust as narrated by our participants from Sweden.

Abstract:
The rationality of this interdisciplinary transversal conversation is premised upon the conviction that there is much in common between the relational ontology of ubuntu (e.g. ubuntu ngummuntu ngabantu) and the philosophy of organism of English mathematician and philosopher A.N. Whitehead. It is revealed that the African aphorism which speaks to the deepest longings of a people has metaphysical and philosophical moorings and the speculative process schema is based on physicality. In the course of the transversal encounter, the mutual prehension of ubuntu-process yields a systematic response to creaturely physical and mental suffering. A challenge of theodicy is encountered by 'process' in posing divine passive complicity amid active redemption. Ubuntu, for its part, is expanded into a responsive postfoundational mode. In both internal conversations, ubuntu proves that it can bear the weight of an expanded application and process prehensions are given flesh. An extended narratological examination takes place between ubuntu-process, neuroscience and an ubuntu-process approach to the homiletic of parables. Suggested trajectories for further application of a postfoundational understanding of ubuntu, armed with not only its liminal expertise but the relational cosmology of the philosophy of organism will comprise invitations to apply Whiteheadean ubuntu-process to investigations of human relationship to the environment and among differing human tribal allegiances, an elaboration of its intraand inter-personal/intra- and inter-social dynamics drawing upon the learning from the permeability of formal fuzzy logic, further elaboration awaits in an ubuntu-process contribution to studies of integral theory, critical theory and embodied realism; the place of ubuntu-process among other ontologies and, finally, the role of ubuntu-process in descriptive and prescriptive analyses of mimetic dynamics.

Abstract:
The circumstance of the foundational moment did not consent the transmutation of the traditional state designed for the political society, meaning, the conjugation of the Social Contracts of the dissimilar political proto-systems that would allow the advent of a Political Community based on the appropriate the Ubuntu Ethics. The Guiné-Bissau Republic constitutes singular transcendence of the historical contingency that surfaced without soul. Consequently, without consenting the transformation that implies the multiplicity of the different Convinced Wills which would articulate the diverse Social Contracts, how to determine a political assembling averse to the African political-philosophical paradigm? Consequently, how would it be possibly to consubstantiate the assembly of the multiplicity of loyalties that would epitomize, appropriately, the vocative ideal of the purpose and would provoke the authentic transformation of the Imagined Community in a Common Significations Community? Since, the understanding that the depreciation of the congregation of the miscellaneous Social Contracts and the not incorporation of the Ubuntu Ethics, will reveal the lack of Authenticity of the Political System and, as well, will oppose to the consubstantiation of the vocation for the realization of an ideally Republic. In this hermetic framing, acknowledging the deteriorated reason of being Political Community, subsequent of the moral decadence and pollical degeneration, one shows up that the consubstantiation of the ideal Republic for the nation forged in the struggle holds morphological limitations surmountable except by political metamorphosis that incorporate the Ubuntu Ethics.

My project proceeds from the question: What might an African Dream Play be for the 21 st Century? Or how might dreams be used to generate content and presentational form as well as to influence the way in which the audience experience or participate in the performance event? My interest in the African Dream Play lies in a belief that it might provide a means of reconstructing the spirit of ubuntu through theatre. It seeks - both in process and presentation - to include in this reconstruction, that which is popularly known as moral regeneration - which I see rather as spiritual regeneration. My contention is that we, and particularly young people, are living in a social and spiritual crisis and the African Dream Play attempts a trans formative intervention within the dynamic fabric of the contemporary urban 'village'-a space of many cultures, languages, ideologies and levels of economic status. This explication sets my practical research and the production Isivuno Sama Phupha in particular, in a theoretical framework and performance historical context. It draws on the theories of Victor Turner, specifically his concepts 'liminality' and 'communitas' and his idea of the social drama. It then traces the evolution of my theatrical research: first through an interest in cultural and religious practices prevalent in the townships around Cape Town and how they might be used to generate material for the theatre and an aesthetics of presentation that could stimulate the communitas experience for both the performers and the audience; then, on to dreams and how they might provide the stimulus for my envisaged theatre by utilizing an experience of their essential liminality.

Abstract:
A challenging issue of GNU/Linux: usability has been studied in this report. Usability is considered as one of the core component in any system software. System software should be efficient, effective and satisfying for users. Different studies on usability issue have been conducted in different distros but there is no specific study on Ubuntu 8.10. Ubuntu 8.10 is considered for usability evaluation of GNU/Linux system software and a multi-phased research approach is adopted. Participants (students) from different disciplines and level are taken to conduct the usability test. The system software is evaluated on the basis of usability test results and user’s opinion. An interview is designed and conducted to validate the tested findings of the system. GNU/Linux is serving the whole community as being used by different distros. The current set of interface guidelines and default softwares used by Ubuntu does not provide efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction for novice users. It is very important aspect that software should have uniformity and complete control in applications. There is need to improve or redesign the default softwares for better usability in terms of interface, message windows, bugs and help etc for novice users.

Abstract:
This missiological study is to precede from the reformation Theology tradition. The Theological methodology used in this study in formulating theoretical indicators from scripture will follow the hermeneutics of Biblical Theology as set out by Scobie (2003), Lexicons such as Louw and Nida (1988), the grammatical - historical method (Du Toit & Roberts 1979:58), along with other relevant scholarly works will be consulted. This study focuses on the task of the Missionary church and therefore qualitative research is preferable over quantitative research. This study is limited by the fact that morality is a very wide area. There are a lot of interrelated issues that this type of study cannot address and that call for further research e.g. the task of the state towards moral regeneration and the relationship with the church and religion in general, the influence of postmodernism on the church. The context of this study is limited to South African context and covers the post 1994 democratic elections. This study will focus on the Mission focused family because it is the cornerstone of society. Chapter one presented the limites of the study on theSouth African context and cover the post the 1994 democratic elections. Secondly, the second chapter focused on the Missionary church their task to morall regeneration: begining with the church in the area such as self–introspection, repentance, confession of sins, forgiveness an faith in God and in the message of the church. Firstly, the chapter reviewed the history of South Africa and how the past Apartheid era impacted on the present situation as well as the church’s response to Moral Regeneration. Finally, the chapter looks at how the Church can come with practical development through the re–humanization of our people. Similarly, chapter four looked at the matter of Mission focused families as cornerstones for Moral Regeneration. Initially, I provided a comprehensive definition of Mission focused families in the light of, amongst other things, Deut 6: 1–25 and Eph 5: 22–23 . Finally, the fifth chapter delved on the question of the South African Missionary church and the challenges she faces as an agent of hope for moral regeneration. I analysed in detail the challenges facing the Missionary Church today, and on how the Missionary Church deals with those challenges. Most importantly, the chapter focused on the Missionary Church’s prophetic voice on moral regeneration.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I sketch a conception of personhood as understood from within an Afrocommunitarian worldview, and argue that this understanding of personhood has implications for understanding the concept of reconciliation. Understanding ‘being human’ as a collective, communal enterprise has implications for how responsibility, justice, forgiveness and humanization (all cognate concepts of reconciliation) are conceptualized. In line with this understanding of reconciliation and its cognate concepts, I argue that the humanization of self and other (according to the Afrocommunitarian understanding of personhood) is required for addressing the ‘inferiority’ and concurrent ‘superiority’ racial complexes as diagnosed by Franz Fanon and Steve Biko. These complexes reach deeply within individual and collective psyches and political identities, and I argue that political solutions to protracted conflict (in South Africa and other racially charged contexts) which do not address these deeply entrenched pathologies will be inadequate according to an Afrocommunitarian framework.

Despite the fact that South Africa in terms of its Constitution and foreign policy believes in making human rights central to its activities, on many occasions in the UNHRC, it has been found voting opposite to these values. In this regard, it has been found aligning itself with the countries known for poor human rights records. Subsequently, this raises the question of whether the current foreign policy of South Africa is still driven by the high regard for human rights. As a result, this paper endeavours to look specifically at the voting records and patterns of the Government of South Africa as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (2008-2010 and 2013-2015). It will assess such a record with a view to determine whether the Government's foreign policy is in compliance with its international human rights obligations.
