Full textVårt samhälle är beroende av information och olika tekniker och artefakter som ger oss tillgång till den. Men tekniken vi förlitar oss på i olika aspekter av våra liv är ofullkomliga och under det senaste decenniet, har dessa brister varit föremål för identitetstjuvar, cyberbrottslingar och illvilliga personer inom och utanför organisationen. Dessa illvilliga personer riktar ofta sig till nätverk av organisationer såsom sjukhus, banker och andra finansiella organisationer. Tillgång till dessa nätverk uppnås genom att kringgå säkerhetsmekanismer av datorsystem anslutna till organisationens nätverk. Målet med datorsystemsäkerhet är att förhindra eller upptäcka hot; eller återhämta sig från eventuella attacker. Trots stora investeringar i IT-säkerhet infrastruktur och informationssäkerhet, över 95 % av banker, sjukhus och myndigheter har minst 10 skadliga infektioner kringgå befintliga säkerhetsmekanismer och träda in i sitt nätverk utan att upptäckas. Detta har lett till förlust av värdefulla informationer och stora summor av pengar från banker och andra organisationer över hela världen. Från tidigare forskning inom detta område, har det visat sig att anledningen till att säkerhetsmekanismer misslyckas beror ofta på att den används på ett felaktigt sätt eller används inte alls. I synnerhet menar de flesta användare att säkerhetsmekanismer på sina datorer är alltför komplicerat. Därför har tidigare forskning fokuserat på att göra datorsystemsäkerhet användbar så att den är "mindre komplicerat" för alla typer av användare, i stället för att designa datorer som både är användbara och säkra. Problemet med detta traditionella synsätt är att säkerheten behandlas som ett "tillägg" till en färdig datorsystemdesign. Denna studie är ett försök att ändra det traditionella synsättet genom att justera två faser av en datorsystemdesign modell för att integrera insamlingen av användbarhets- samt säkerhetskrav. Styrd av den explorativ fallstudie forskningsdesignen, fick jag nya insikter i en situation som har gäckat säkerhetsspecialister och organisatoriska aktörer. Denna studie resulterade i skapande av en designmetodik för användbara och säkra datorsystem. Även om denna metod är ännu i sin rudimentära fas, testades den med hjälp av en webbenkät. Data från litteraturstudien sorterades med hjälp av en syntesmatris; och analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Några framstående design- och säkerhetsmodeller samt metoder som diskuterades i denna uppsats inkludera Användarcentrerad System Design (UCSD), Ändamålsenligt och Effektivt Vägledning för Informationssäkerhet (AEGIS) och Octave Allegro.

Full textDetta examensarbete har utförts inom området för ”Människa-Datorinteraktion” mer specifikt ”Användarcentrerad Systemdesign”. Fokus har varit på ”användbarhet” och användbart grafiskt användargränssnitt. Aktuella teorier och definitioner har iakttagits. Litteraturstudien har omfattat välkända författare och organisationer i ovannämnda domäner; Jakob Nielsen, Donald A Norman och Internationella standardiseringsorganisationen ISO för att nämna några. En annan källa vars teorier och arbetssätt har tillämpats i detta arbete är boken ”Användarcentrerad Systemdesign” av författarna Jan Gulliksen och Bengt Göransson. Arbetet började med en litteraturstudie följd av val av lämplig metod. Nästa steg innebar att utföra uppgifts- och användaranalyser och därefter var det dags för utvecklingsfasen. Användaren har haft en central roll i detta projekt och har, precis som rekommenderat, involverats i samtliga moment. En lämplig och nyttig metod för att få återkoppling från användarna, förutom intervjuer och workshop, har varit ”Heuristisk Utvärdering”. Det slutliga resultatet och slutsatsen visar att användarcentrerad systemdesign är ett kraftfullt verktyg att nyttja när det kommer till design och utveckling av interaktivt användargränssnitt.

Full textDetta projekt bestod av utvecklingen och evalueringen av ett webbaserat databassystem för deltagare. Den skulle ersätta ett existerande Excel-baserat databassystem för projektet “Vi Ses! Språkvänner i Linköping”. Designen och implementationen gjordes iterativt med hjälp av användbarhetsriktlinjer och resultat från användartester. Användartester användes även för evalueringen av webbdatabassystemet. Uppgiften i användartesterna var deltagarmatchning och det huvudsakliga mätvärdet var hur lång tid uppgiften tog. Projektet resulterade i ett webbaserat databassystem som helt kunde ersätta det Excel-baserade systemet. Evalueringstesterna visade att systemet var både snabbare och mindre felbenäget att matcha deltagare i.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background: The use of computers at school, university, work and for social media is growing and whilst neck pain is common in the general population, computer users have an even higher prevalence. Incorrect workstation ergonomics have been identified as a risk factor for the development of neck pain in computer workers. Aims: To assess the effect of adjusting chair and monitor height of a female office worker’s computer workstation on work related neck and upper back pain intensity, comfort of her sitting posture and disability. Methods: An N=1 study was conducted using the A-B-C design consisting of a computer workstation adjustment involving chair and monitor height of a female office worker. The effect of the intervention was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to measure neck and upper back pain intensity and comfort of sitting position, and the Neck Disability Index to measure disability. The effect of the intervention was assessed over the three phases, consisting of four weeks each. During these phases, the participant could continue with her usual computer work. The results were compiled and tabulated. Results: A reduction in neck and upper back pain intensity as well as an increase in sitting comfort position were found. However these improvements were not statistically or clinically significant. The effect size for pain intensity was 0.76 and for sitting comfort 0.21. The participant reported no disability as measured by the Neck Disability Index, at the start and at the end at the end of the study. Conclusion: The vertical adjustment of this female office worker’s chair and monitor height according to her anthropometrics improved neck and upper back pain intensity and comfort of sitting position. This ergonomic workstation intervention could form part of a practical management option for computer users with neck and upper back pain. Further research is recommended to establish whether these findings are generalizable to the wider community of computer users.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Probleemstelling: Die gebruik van rekenaars by skole, universiteite, werksplekke en vir sosiale doeleindes neem toe. Nek pyn kom dikwels in die algemene bevolking voor, maar dit is meer prevalent in rekenaargebruikers. ‘n Werkstasie wat nie ergonomies korrek opgestel is nie, is geidentifiseer as ‘n risikofaktor vir die ontwikkeling van nekpyn in rekenaar werkers. Doelwitte: Om te bepaal of aanpassings in die stoel- en beeldskerm hoogte van ‘n vroulike kantoor werker se rekenaar werkstasie, ‘n effek het op werksverwante nek en boonste rug pyn, sitgemak en funksionele vermoë. Methode: Die N=1 studie met ‘n A-B-C ontwerp is onderneem en het bestaan uit n rekenaar werkstasie aanpassing waarby die hoogte van die stoel en beeldskerm van ‘n vroulike relenaargebruiker aangepas is. Die effek van die intervensie is ge-evalueer deur middle van die visueel analoogskaal (VAS) om pyn en sitgemak te bepaal; en die Nek Ongeskiktheids Indeks (NOI) om gestremtheid te bepaal. Die effek van die intervensie is oor drie fases, wat elk bestaan het uit vier weke, evalueer. Gedurende die fases, kon die deelnemer met haar gewone rekenaarwerk voortgaan. Die resultate is saamgestel en getabuleer. Resultate: Daar was ‘n vemindering in die intensiteit van nekpyn, boonste rug pyn en die sitgemak van die individu het ook verbeter. Hierdie verbeteringe was egter nie statisties of klinies betekenisvol nie. Die effek grootte vir pyn intensiteit was 0.76 en vir sitgemak was 0.21. Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis brings together productivity and risk assessments through innovative design, development and evaluation of a unique system for retrieving and analysing data. In the past, although the link between them is well-documented, these assessments have largely been dealt with as separate antagonist entities. A broad evaluation of the existing traditional and technological support systems has been conducted to identify suitable methodologies along with a common technological platform for automation. The methodologies selected for the productivity and risk assessments were; work sampling and the revised NIOSH lifting equation respectively. The automation of these procedures is facilitated through computer vision and the use of a range imaging Kinect™ camera. The standalone C++ application integrates two tracking approaches to extract real-time positional data on the worker and the work-piece. The OpenNI and OpenCV libraries are used to perform skeletal tracking and image recognition respectively. The skeletal tracker returns positional data on specific joints of the worker, while the image recognition component, a SURF implementation, is used to identify and track a specific work-piece within the capture frame. These tracking techniques are computationally expensive. In order to enable real time execution of the program, Nvidia’s CUDA toolkit and threading building blocks have been applied to reduce the processing time. The performance measurement system is a continuous sampling derivative of work sampling. The speed of the worker’s hand movements and proximity to the work-piece are used to classify the worker in one of four possible states; busy, static, idle, or out of frame. In addition to the worker based performance measures, data relating to work-pieces are also calculated. These include the number of work-pieces processed by a specific worker, along with the average and variations in the processing times. The risk assessment is an automated approach of the revised NIOSH lifting equation. The system calculates when a worker makes and/or breaks contact with the work-piece and uses the joint locations from the skeletal tracker to calculate the variables used in the determination of the multipliers and ultimately the recommended weight limit and lifting index. The final calculation indicates whether the worker is at risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder. Additionally the information provided on each of the multipliers highlights which elements of the lifting task contribute the most to the risk. The user-interface design ensures that the system is easy to use. The interface also displays the results of the study enabling analysts to assess worker performance at any time in real time. The automated system therefore enables analysts to respond rapidly to rectify problems. The system also reduces the complexity of performing studies and it eliminates human errors. The time and costs required to perform the studies are reduced and the system can become a permanent fixture on factory floors. The development of the automated system opens the door for further development of the system to ultimately enable more detailed assessments of productivity and risk.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The RoboCup offers a research platform to advance robotics and multi-robot cooperation in dynamic environments. This project builds on work previously done to develop a research platform for multi-robot cooperation at Stellenbosch University. This thesis describes the development of an active ball handling system for a robot in the RoboCup Small Size League (SSL). This was achieved by building on the work done in the previous projects. The hardware for the kicker and dribbler mechanisms on the robot were implemented and tested to characterise their capabilities. The kicker was characterised to control the speed at which a ball is kicked and the dribbler for optimal control over a ball. More accurate movement was required and the Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) controllers for translational and rotational movement on the robot were improved. The test results show an improvement in straight line trajectory tracking when compared to those of the previous controllers. Dribble control sensors were implemented on the robot for successful dribbling by the robot. This resulted in a significant improvement to the dribbling ability of the robot when these sensors are used. This dribbling ability was compared to the dribbling ability of the robot when no feedback was received from the sensors. Lastly a proposed curved trajectory tracking algorithm was tested by combining translational and rotational movement of the robot. This algorithm showed the capabilities of the robot to follow a curved trajectory with the improved translational and rotational controllers.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die RoboCup bied ’n navorsingsplatvorm om robotika en multi-robot samewerking in ’n dinamiese omgewing te bevorder. Hierdie projek bou voort op werk wat reeds gedoen is om ’n navorsingsplatvorm vir multi-robot samewerking aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch te ontwikkel. Hierdie tesis beskryf die ontwikkeling van ’n aktiewe balhanteringsstelsel vir ’n robot in die RoboCup Klein Liga (KL). Dit is bereik deur voort te bou op die werk wat in vorige projekte gedoen is. Die hardeware vir die skopper- en dribbelmeganismes is geïmplementeer en getoets om hulle vermoëns te karakteriseer. Die skopper is gekenmerk deur die spoed waarteen ’n bal geskop word en die dribbler vir optimale beheer oor ’n bal. Meer akkurate beweging was nodig en die PID-beheerders vir translasie- en rotasiebeweging in die robot is verbeter. Die resultate van die toetse toon ’n verbetering in reguitlynbeweging in vergelyking met dié van die vorige beheerders. Dribbelbeheersensors is in die robot geïmplementeer vir suksesvolle dribbelbeweging deur die robot. Gevolglik is daar ’n aansienlike verbetering in die dribbelvermoë van die robot wanneer hierdie sensors gebruik word. Hierdie dribbelvermoë is vergelyk met die dribbelvermoë wanneer die robot geen terugvoer van die sensors ontvang nie. Laastens is ’n voorgestelde algoritme vir die robot om ’n geboë trajek te volg, getoets. Dit is bereik deur die translasie- en die rotasiebeweging van die robot te kombineer. Hierdie algoritme het die vermoë van die robot om ’n geboë baan te laat volg deur gebruik te maak van die verbeterde translasie- en rotasiebeheerders.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The capability of simulating the output image of earth observation satellite sensors is of great value, as it reduces the dependency on extensive field tests when developing, testing and calibrating satellite sensors. The aim of this study was to develop a software model to simulate the data acquisition process used by passive remote sensing satellites for the purpose of image generation. To design the software model, a comprehensive study was done of a physical real world satellite remote sensing system in order to identify and analyse the different elements of the data acquisition process. The different elements were identified as being the target, the atmosphere, the sensor and satellite, and radiation. These elements and a signature rendering equation are used to model the target-atmosphere-sensor relationship of the data acquisition process. The signature rendering equation is a mathematical model of the different solar and self-emitted thermal radiance paths that contribute to the radiance reaching the sensor. It is proposed that the software model be implemented as an additional space remote sensing application in the Optronics Sensor Simulator (OSSIM) simulation environment. The OSSIM environment provides the infrastructure and key capabilities upon which this specialist work builds. OSSIM includes a staring array sensor model, which was adapted and expanded in this study to operate as a generic satellite sensor. The OSSIM signature rendering equation was found to include all the necessary terms required to model the at-sensor radiance for a satellite sensor with the exception of an adjacency effect term. The equation was expanded in this study to include a term to describe the in-field-of-view adjacency effect due to aerosol scattering. This effect was modelled as a constant value over the sensor field of view. Models were designed to simulate across-track scanning mirrors, the satellite orbit trajectory and basic image processing for geometric discontinuities. Testing of the software model showed that all functions operated correctly within the set operating conditions and that the in-field-of-view adjacency effect can be modelled effectively by a constant value over the sensor field of view. It was concluded that the satellite remote sensing software model designed in this study accurately simulates the key features of the real world system and provides a concise and sound framework on which future functionality can be expanded.

So ’n sagteware program sal die afhanklikheid van breedvoerige veldwerktoetse verminder gedurende die ontwerp, toetsing en kalibrasie fases van die ontwikkeling van ’n satellietsensor. Die doel van hierdie studie was om ’n sagteware model te ontwerp wat die dataverwerwingsproses van ’n passiewe satelliet afstandswaarnemingstelsel kan naboots, met die doel om beelde te genereer. Om die sagteware model te ontwerp het ’n omvattende studie van ’n fisiese regte wêreld satelliet afstandswaarnemingstelsel geverg, om die verskillende elemente van die dataverwerwingsproses te identifiseer en te analiseer. Die verskillende elemente is geïdentifiseer as die teiken, die atmosfeer, die sensor en satelliet, en vloed. Hierdie elemente, tesame met ’n duimdrukvergelyking, is gebruik om die teiken-atmosfeer-sensor verhouding van die dataverwerwingsproses te modelleer. Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Wireless ad hoc networks are increasingly used in today’s life in various areas ranging from environmental monitoring to the military. For technical reasons, they are severely limited in terms of battery power, communication capacity and computation capability. Research has been carried out to deal with these limitations using different approaches. A theoretical treatment of the subject is topology control whose basic task is to design network topologies with special properties that make them energy-efficient and interference-optimal. We study, implement and compare the XTC and CBTC algorithms in terms of interference reduction, length stretch factor and maximum degree. These two algorithms have two features that are absent in almost all competitive topology control algorithms which are practicality and maintaining connectivity. Both algorithms show good performance in terms of interference reduction and maintaining a good length stretch factor. Regarding CBTC, we prove that it is a power spanner. We show through extensive simulation that the degree distribution of wireless ad hoc networks modelled by the log-normal model is binomial if the average degree is not high. We find that there is no fixed threshold for the average degree at which the distribution is distorted and no longer binomial. We show through simulation that the node density which ensures the absence of isolated nodes is a tight lower bound for the node density which ensures connectivity. The implication of this result is that connectivity is ensured with high probability if the minimum node degree is equal to 1. Finally we show through simulation that the log-normal model is not a realistic representation of wireless ad hoc networks if the environmental parameter is at least 6. This result is important because there are no available measurements to determine the range of the environmental parameter for typical frequencies used in wireless ad hoc networks.

Vir tegniese redes is hulle ernstig beperk in terme van battery krag, kommunikasie kapasiteit en berekeningsvermoë. Navorsing vanuit verkillende benaderings word gedoen om met hierdie beperkings te deel. ’n Teoretiese benadering tot onderwerp is topologie beheer. Die basiese taak is om netwerktopologieë met spesiale eienskappe wat hulle energie-doeltreffend en interferensieoptimaal maak te ontwerp. Ons bestudeer, implementeer en vergelyk die XTC en CBTC algoritmes in terme van interferensie vermindering, lengte rek faktor en maksimum graad. Beide hierdie algoritmes het twee eienskappe wat afwesig is in byna al die mededingende topologie beheer algoritmes: hulle is prakties en handhaf verbindings. Full textIn this thesis an algorithm for producing saliency maps as well as an algorithm for detecting salient regions based on the saliency map was developed. The saliency values are computed as center-surround differences and a local descriptor called the region p-channel is used to represent center and surround respectively. An integral image representation called the integral p-channel is used to speed up extraction of the local descriptor for any given image region. The center-surround difference is calculated as either histogram or p-channel dissimilarities.
Ground truth was collected using human subjects and the algorithm’s ability to detect salient regions was evaluated against this ground truth. The algorithm was also compared to another saliency algorithm.
Two different center-surround interpretations are tested, as well as several p-channel and histogram dissimilarity measures. The results show that for all tested settings the best performing dissimilarity measure is the so called diffusion distance. The performance comparison showed that the algorithm developed in this thesis outperforms the algorithm against which it was compared, both with respect to region detection and saliency ranking of regions. It can be concluded that the algorithm shows promising results and further investigation of the algorithm is recommended. A list of suggested approaches for further research is provided.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Within a complex electronic system, sub-system communication forms the backbone of the functionality of any satellite. It allows multiple processors to run simultaneously and data to be shared amongst them. Without it, a single processor would have to control the entire satellite. Not only would such a design then be overly complicated, but the processor would also not have sufficient capacity to service all the components efficiently. Furthermore the detrimental effects that radiation have on integrated circuits are well documented and can be anything from a single bit flip to a complete integrated circuit failure. If not repaired, a failure on a sub-system communication bus could lead to the loss of the entire satellite. Die goal is to create more radiation resistant Controller-Area-Network (CAN) node. Since a full triple modular redundant design will have a large footprint and high power consumption, a combination of techniques will be applied and tested. The goal is to achieve improved footprint utilisation over triple modular redundancy, while still maintaining good resistance to Single Event Upsets (SEU). By applying simulation, it was sufficiently proven that the implementation of the individual techniques used functioned according to expectations. These techniques included error detection and correction using Hamming Codes, single event transient filter and triple modular redundancy. Having applied these mitigation techniques, the footprint of the CAN controller increased by only 116%. Simulation showed that the Error Detection and Correction and Triple Modular Redundancy worked effectively with the CAN controller, and that the CAN controller could function as originally intended. Using radiation testing, the design proved to be more resistant to SEUs than the unmitigated CAN controller. It was thus shown that through using a combination of mitigation techniques, it is possible to develop an optimal design with a high level of resistance against Single Event Upsets, utilizing a smaller footprint than implementing Triple Modular Redundancy.

Full textIn this thesis it is examined whether the pose of an object can be determined by a system trained with a synthetic 3D model of said object. A number of variations of methods using P-channel representation are examined. Reference images are rendered from the 3D model, features, such as gradient orientation and color information are extracted and encoded into P-channels. The P-channel representation is then used to estimate an overlapping channel representation, using B1-spline functions, to estimate a density function for the feature set. Experiments were conducted with this representation as well as the raw P-channel representation in conjunction with a number of distance measures and estimation methods.
It is shown that, with correct preprocessing and choice of parameters, the pose can be detected with some accuracy and, if not in real-time, fast enough to be useful in a tracker initialization scenario. It is also concluded that the success rate of the estimation depends heavily on the nature of the object.

Full textThere is a growing trend towards the use of point of care testing in resource poor settings, in particular in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria. The Alere PIMA CD4 counter is widely used as a point of care device in the staging and management of HIV. While the instrument has been extensively validated and shown to be comparable to central laboratory testing, little is known about the error rates of these devices, as well as the factors that contribute to error rates. This research was a retrospective analysis of error rates from 61 PIMA point of care devices deployed in nine African countries belonging to Medisciens Sans Frontiers. The data was collected between January 2011 and June 2013. The objectives of the study were to determine the overall error rate and, where possible, determine the root cause. Thereafter the study aimed to determine the variables that contribute to the root causes and make recommendations to reduce the error rate. The overall error was determined to be 13.2 percent. The errors were further divided into four root causes and error rates assigned to each root cause based on the error codes generated by the instrument. These error rates were found to be operator error (48.4%), instrument error (2.0%), reagent/cartridge error (1%) and sample error (4.3%). It was found that a high percentage of the errors were ambiguous (44.3%), meaning that they had more than one possible root cause. A systems-based knowledge management approach was used to create a qualitative politicised influence diagram, which described the variables that affect each of the root causes. The influence diagram was subjected to loop analysis where individual loops were described in terms of the knowledge type (tacit or explicit), the knowing type (know-how, know-who, know-what and know-why), and the actors involved with each variable. Where possible, the variable was described as contributing to pre-analytical, analytical or post-analytical error. Recommendations to reduce the error rates for each of the variables were then made based on the findings.

Full textGovernance Risk and Compliance (GRC) software applications are designed to facilitate the GRC process. GRC software inherently faces the same implementation challenges as any other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. The design and usability of GRC software contribute substantially to how much value is added to the GRC process and as GRC is still in its infancy; it is likely to keep evolving as this process matures. Due to the inconstant nature of the GRC process, GRC software applications require a large amount of customisation to meet the special requirements of each organisation. The objective of this research was to establish the extent to which GRC software applications add value to the GRC process. The researcher also tried to establish whether organisations, that are currently using GRC software applications, gain more value from the GRC process than before they implemented GRC software applications. He conducted the research by presenting research questions, in the form of a questionnaire, to the risk executives of three Western Cape companies. The author of this research paper collected the responses from each company by conducting one-on-one interviews with each of the executives concerned and then reviewed and analysed the interview results of each company. Finally, the author completed a cross case analysis, by comparing GRC software application dimensions and characteristic ratings across the three companies concerned. The research indicated that there is not a great difference in importance between the five GRC design dimensions because they all received high performance ratings. There were some differences, however, in the perceived performance of each dimension, when analysing the dimension characteristics ratings. The research showed that the greatest benefit, of the use of GRC software applications, is the ability to add structure and consistency to the GRC process.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main on-board computer in a satellite is responsible for ensuring the correct operation of the entire system. It performs this task using flight software. In order to reduce future development costs, it is desirable to develop generic software that can be re-used on subsequent missions. This thesis details the design and implementation of a generic flight software application for CubeSats. A generic, modular framework is used in order to increase the re-usability of the flight software architecture. In order to simplify the management of the various on-board processes, the software is built upon the FreeRTOS real-time operating system. The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems’ telemetry and telecommand packet definitions are used to interface with ground stations. In addition, a number of services defined in the European Cooperation for Space Standardisation’s Packet Utilisation Standard are used to perform the functions required from the flight software. The final application contains all the command and data handling functionality required in a standard CubeSat mission. Mechanisms for the collection, storage and transmission of housekeeping data are included as well as the implementation of basic fault tolerance techniques. Through testing it is shown that the FreeRTOS scheduler can be used to ensure the software meets hard-real time requirements.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The consumerisation of mobile technology is driving the mobile revolution and enterprises are forced to incorporate mobile solutions into their business processes in order to remain competitive. While there are many benefits relating to the investment in and use of mobile technology, significant risks are also being introduced into the business. The fast pace of technological innovation and the rate of adoption of mobile technology by employees has, however, created an environment where enterprises are deploying mobile solutions on an ad hoc basis. Enterprises are only addressing the risks as they are occurring and resulting in losses. The key contributing factor to this lack of governance and management is the fact that those charged with governance do not understand the underlying mobile technology components. The purpose of this research is to improve the understanding of the underlying components of mobile technology. The research further proposes to use this understanding to identify the significant risks related to mobile technology and to formulate appropriate internal controls to address these risks. The findings of the research identified the following underlying components of mobile technology: mobile devices; mobile infrastructure, data delivery mechanisms and enabling technologies; and mobile applications. Based on an understanding of the components and subcategories of mobile technology, a control framework was used to identify the significant risks related to each component and subcategory. The significant risks identified included both risks to the users (including interoperability, user experience, connectivity and IT support) as well as risks to the enterprise’s strategies (including continuity, security, cost and data ownership). The research concludes by formulating internal controls that the enterprise can implement to mitigate the significant risks. This resulted in two matrixes that serve as quick-reference guides to enterprises in the identification of significant risks at an enterprise specific mobile technology component level, as well as the relevant internal controls to consider. The matrixes also assist enterprises in determining the best mobile solutions to deploy in their business, given their strategies, risk evaluation and control environment.

Die vinnige tempo waarteen mobiele tegnologie ontwikkel en deur werknemers aangeneem word, het egter ʼn omgewing geskep waarin ondernemings mobiele tegnologie op ʼn ad hoc basis ontplooi. Besighede spreek eers die risiko’s aan nadat dit reeds voorgekom het en verliese as gevolg gehad het. Die hoof bydraende faktor tot die tekort aan beheer en bestuur van mobiele tegnologie is die feit dat diegene verantwoordelik vir beheer, nie onderliggend mobiele tegnologie komponente verstaan nie. Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om die begrip van die onderliggende komponente van mobiele tegnologie te verbeter. Die navorsing poog verder om die wesenlike risiko’s verbonde aan mobiele tegnologie te identifiseer en om toepaslike interne beheermaatreëls te formuleer wat die risiko’s sal aanspreek. Die bevindinge van die navorsing het die volgende onderliggende komponente van mobiele tegnologie geïdentifiseer: mobiele toestelle; mobiele infrastruktuur, data afleweringsmeganismes, en bemagtigende tegnologieë; en mobiele toepassings. Gebaseer op ʼn begrip van die komponente en subkategorieë van mobiele tegnologie, is ʼn kontrole raamwerk gebruik om die wesenlike risiko’s verbonde aan elke komponent en subkategorie van die tegnologie, te identifiseer. Die wesenlike risiko’s sluit beide risiko’s vir die gebruiker (insluitend kontinuïteit, gebruikerservaring, konnektiwiteit en IT ondersteuning) sowel as risiko’s vir die onderneming se strategieë (insluitend kontinuïteit, sekuriteit, koste en data eienaarskap) in. Die navorsing sluit af met die formulering van die beheermaatreëls wat geïmplementeer kan word om die wesenlike risiko’s aan te spreek. Dit het gelei tot twee tabelle wat as vinnige verwysingsraamwerke deur ondernemings gebruik kan word in die identifisering van wesenlike risiko’s op ʼn onderneming-spesifieke tegnologie komponentvlak asook die oorweging van relevante interne beheermaatreëls. Die tabelle help ondernemings ook om die beste mobiele tegnologie vir hul besigheid te implementeer, gebaseer op hul strategie, risiko evaluering en beheeromgewing.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Aims: To assess the effect of a vertical height adjustment of the chair and visual display unit (VDU) on work related upper quadrant musculoskeletal pain (WRUQMP) and sitting comfort in computer users. The upper quadrant refers to the occiput, cervical and upper thoracic spine including the clavicles and scapulae. Methods: An N=1 study was conducted using the ABC design whereby an ergonomic workstation adjustment, of VDU and chair height, was compared to the subject’s usual workstation settings. Pain and sitting comfort were measured using visual analogue scales (VAS). The subject was assessed over the four week phases as she performed her typical VDU work. The results were compiled and tabulated. Results: Both the mean and variance in pain intensity decreased after the workstation intervention. A deterioration was noted in sitting comfort. Conclusion: The vertical height adjustment of the chair and VDU may have contributed to a decrease in WRUQMP in this subject. This safe, economical workstation intervention may be a practical management option for the computer user suffering from WRUQMP. Further research into the measurement of comfort whilst sitting at a computer workstation, is recommended.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Doelwitte: Om die effek te bepaal van n vertikale aanpassing van die stoel en beeldskerm van rekenaargebruikers op werksverwandte boonste kwadrant muskuloskeletale pyn en sitgemak. Die boonste kwadrant verwys na die oksiput, servikale en boonste torakale werwelkolom en sluit ook die klavikel en skapula in. Methode: Die N=1 studie is onderneem met gebruik van die ABC ontwerp in terme waarvan n ergonomiese aanpassing van stoel en beeldskerm vergelyk is met die normale gebruik van die deelnemer. Pyn en sitgemak is gemeet deur die gebruik van die Visueel analoogskaal. Die interwensies is ge-evalueer oor vierweekfases tydens normale rekenaar gebruik van die deelnemer. Die resultate is saamgestel en getabuleer. Uitkoms: Beide die gemiddelde en veranderlike pynintensiteit het verminder nadat die werkstasie aangepas is. Geen verbetering in sitgemak is opgemerk nie. Gevolgtrekking: Die vertikale hoogte-aanpassing van die stoel en beeldskerm het moontlik bygedra tot die verminderde pynvlakke in hierdie deelnemer. Hierdie veilige, ekonomiese verstelling is moontlik n praktiese beheeropsie vir rekenaargebruikers wat werksverwandte boonste kwadrant muskuloskeletale pyn verduur. Verder studie in die meet en waarneming van sitgemak tydens rekenaarwerk is nodig.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Machine learning techniques have been around for a few decades now and are being established as a pre-dominant feature in most control applications. Elevators create a unique control application where traffic flow is controlled and directed according to certain control philosophies. Machine learning techniques can be implemented to predict and control every possible traffic flow scenario and deliver the best possible solution. Various techniques will be implemented in the elevator application in an attempt to establish a degree of artificial intelligence in the decision making process and to be able to have increased interaction with the passengers at all times. The primary objective for this thesis is to investigate the potential of machine learning solutions and the relevancy of such technologies in elevator control applications. The aim is to establish how the research field of machine learning, specifically neural network science, can be successfully utilised with the goal of creating an artificial intelligent (AI) controller. The AI controller is to adapt to its existing state and change its control parameters as required without the intervention of the user. The secondary objective for this thesis is to develop an elevator model that represents every aspect of the real-world application. The purpose of the model is to improve the accuracy of existing theoretical and simulated models, by modulating previously unknown and complex variables and constraints. The aim is to create a complete and fully functional testing platform for developing new elevator control philosophies and testing new elevator control mechanisms. To achieve these objectives, the main focus is directed to how waiting time, probability theory and power consumption predictions can be optimally utilised by means of machine learning solutions. The theoretical background is provided for these concepts and how each subject can potentially influence the decision making process. The reason why this approach has been difficult to implement in the past, is possibly mainly due to the lack of adequate representation for these concepts in an online environment without the continuous feedback from an Expert System. As a result of this thesis, the respective online models for each of these concepts were successfully developed in order to deal with the identified shortcomings. The developed online models for projected waiting times, probability networks and power consumption feedback were then combined to form a new Intelligent Elevator Controller (IEC) structure as opposed to the Expert System approach, mostly used in present computer based elevator controllers.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Masjienleertegnieke bestaan al vir 'n paar dekades en is 'n oorwegende kenmerk in hedendaagse beheertoestelle. Hysbakke skep 'n unieke beheertoepassing, waar verkeersvloei beheer en gerig kan word volgens sekere beheer loso e. Masjienleertegnieke kan geïmplementeer word om elke moontlike verkeersvloei situasie te voorspel en te beheer en die beste moontlike oplossing te lewer. Verskeie tegnieke sal in die tesis ondersoek word in 'n poging om 'n mate van kunsmatige intelligensie in die besluitneming proses te skep asook verhoogte interaksie met die passasiers te alle tye. Die prim^ere doel van hierdie tesis is om die potensiaal van 'n masjienleer oplossing en die toepaslikheid van dit in hysbakbeheertoepassings te ondersoek. Die doel is om vas te stel hoe die navorsing in die veld van die masjienleer, spesi ek in neurale netwerk wetenskappe, suksesvol aangewend kan word met die doel om 'n kunsmatige intelligente beheerder te skep. Die kunsmatige intelligente beheerder moet kan aanpas by sy onmidelike omgewing en sy beheer parameters moet kan verander soos nodig sonder die ingryping van die gebruiker. Die sekond^ere doelwit vir hierdie tesis is om 'n hysbakmodel, wat elke aspek van die werklike w^ereld verteenwoordig, te ontwikkel. Die doel van die model is om die akkuraatheid van die bestaande teoretiese en gesimuleerde modelle te verbeter deur voorheen onbekende en komplekse veranderlikes en beperkings in ag te neem. Die doel is om 'n funksionele toetsplatform te skep vir die ontwikkeling van nuwe hysbakbeheer loso e en vir die toets van nuwe hysbakbeheermeganismes. Om hierdie doelwitte te bereik, is die hoo okus gerig om wagtyd, waarskynlikheidsteorie en kragverbruik voorspellings optimaal te gebruik deur middel van die masjienleer oplossings. Die teoretiese agtergrond is voorsien vir hierdie konsepte en hoe elke konsep potensieel die besluitneming kan beïnvloed. Die rede waarom hierdie benadering moeilik was om te implementeer tot hede, is moontlik te wyte aan die gebrek aan voldoende verteenwoordiging vir hierdie konsepte in 'n aanlynomgewing sonder die voortdurende terugvoer van 'n Deskundige Stelsel. As gevolg van hierdie tesis word die onderskeie aanlynmodelle vir elk van hierdie konsepte suksesvol ontwikkel om die geïdenti seerde tekortkominge te oorkom. Die ontwikkelde aanlynmodelle vir geprojekteerde wagtye, waarskynlikheidsnetwerke en kragverbruik terugvoer is dan gekombineer om 'n nuwe intelligente hysbakbeheerder struktuur te skep, in teenstelling met die Deskundige Stelsel benadering in die huidige rekenaar gebaseerde hysbakbeheerders.

Full textAs small manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) grow, the complexity of their manufacturing operations are likely to increase to a point where they can benefit from manufacturing specific information systems, such as a manufacturing execution system (MES), to manage the complexity of their operating environment. Unfortunately, the capital expense required to implement an MES may prohibit smaller enterprises from adopting this potentially advantageous technology. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is a developing delivery channel that promises to realise the same economies of scales of large software implementations by hosting software centrally and allowing access by multiple customers through the internet. This delivery model promises, amongst its many benefits, access to advanced software at a subscription based fee, which reduces its capital expense and makes it affordable to smaller enterprises. The purpose of this study is to identify factors that would influence the adoption of SaaS based MESs in South-African manufacturing SMEs. A literature survey was conducted to understand the characteristics of SaaS, the functionality and benefits that can be derived from an MES and the characteristics of SMEs that differentiate them from larger organisations. Instruments were identified which can be used to assess the propensity of SMEs to adopt new technology. An internet survey of South-African manufacturing SMEs was conducted to determine their perceptions and beliefs regarding SaaS and MES, and their intent to implement licensed or SaaS based MES within the next 12 months. The survey results were analysed to determine which beliefs were the most influential in determining an SME’s intention to adopt an MES and particularly which beliefs bias their decision towards either a licensed or a SaaS based MES implementation. The perceived benefits of an MES were found to be the most significant factor in driving the intent to adopt an MES. It was found that some beliefs regarding SaaS and licensing may influence the choice of delivery channel, and the perceptions of industry peers and customers were also found to influence the decision to adopt either a licensed or a SaaS based MES. A simple screening of input variables was effective in improving the predictive ability of the research model. While a full set of variables was able to explain 9.4% of the variation in the intent to adopt MES, a screened set of variables was able explain 15.5%. Further improvement in screening techniques could further improve the predictive power of the model. Since the model was only able to explain around 15.5% of the variation in the intent to adopt an MES, it is likely that there may be other significant factors that drive the intention to adopt an MES that are not covered in this study. These could include personal attitudes of the owner that are independent of the enterprise itself.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Aims: To assess the effect of a chair and computer screen height adjustment on the neck and upper back musculoskeletal symptoms in an office worker. Methods: An N=1 study was conducted using the ABC design. Ethics approval was obtained for the study and the participant provided informed written consent. The participant was assessed over three four week phases as she performed her habitual computer work. The outcome measures assessed during the three phases were the pain intensity and perceived sitting comfort. The three phases were named the baseline, intervention and wash-out phases. During the baseline phase, the outcome measures were obtained at the participant‟s habitual work station. The intervention phase involved a vertical adjustment of the chair and computer screen height. The wash-out phase allowed the participant to adjust the chair and computer screen height to their choice. A follow-up interview was conducted with the participant three months after completion of the study. The mean values and the ranges of the pain intensity and perceived comfort were obtained and compared. The data collected was captured on a Microsoft Excel 2010 spread sheet, where after the data was tabulated and presented graphically. Results: The mean pain intensity of the participant increased slightly during the intervention phase in comparison to the baseline phase, but remained stable during the wash-out phase. The mean perceived sitting comfort deteriorated initially during the intervention phase, but improved later during the intervention phase and showed greater improvement during the wash out phase. The perceived sitting comfort showed more improvement than the pain intensity during the washout phase. Both the pain intensity and perceived sitting comfort showed improvement at the three months follow up assessment, post completion of the study. Conclusion: The vertical height adjustment of the chair and the VDT did not improve the participant‟s pain intensity and perceived sitting comfort when compared to the participant‟s habitual workstation parameters. The findings do not favour the horizontal viewing angle. The findings of this study however support the use of „slightly below horizontal‟ viewing angle as being conducive to reduce the pain intensity and improve the sitting comfort of an office worker.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Doelstelling: Om die effek te bepaal van die hoogte aanpassing van die stoel en rekenaarskerm op die nek en bo-rug muskuloskeletale simptome van 'n kantoorwerker. Metodes: „n N=1 studie was uitgevoer deur gebruik te maak van die ABC ontwerp. Etiese goedkeuring was verkry vir die studie en die deelnemer het ingeligte skriftelike toestemming verleen. Die deelnemer was ge-evalueer oor drie vier week-lange fases terwyl sy haar gewone rekenaarwerk verrig het. Die uitkomsmetings ge-evalueer tydens die drie fases was pyn intensiteit en waargenome sitgemak. Die drie fases was genoem die basislyn, intervensie en uitwas fases. Gedurende die basislyn fase was die uitkomsmetings by die deelnemer se gewone werkstasie ingevorder. Die intervensie fase het 'n vertikale aanpassing van die stoel en rekenaarskerm behels. Die uitwas fase het die deelnemer toegelaat om haar stoel en rekenaarskerm se hoogte aan te pas volgens haar keuse. 'n Opvolg onderhoud was gevoer met die deelnemer drie maande na die voltooiing van die studie. Die resultate was vasgelê op 'n Microsoft Excel 2010 data bladsy, waarna die data getabuleer en grafies uitgebeeld is. Resultate: Die gemiddelde pyn intensiteit van die deelnermer het effens toegeneem tydens die intervensie fase in vergelyking met die basislyn fase, maar het stabiel gebly tydens die uitwas fase. Die gemiddelde waargenome sitgemak het aanvanklik verswak tydens die intervensie fase, maar het later verbeter tydens die intervensie fase en het aangehou verbeter tydens die uitwas fase. Die waargenome sitgemak het groter verbetering getoon as die pyn intensiteit tydens die uitwas fase. Beide pyn intensiteit en waargenome sitgemak het verbetering getoon by die drie maande opvolg evaluasie, na voltooiing van die studie. Gevolgtrekking. Die vertikale hoogte aanpassing van die stoel en rekenaarskerm het nie die deelnemer se pyn intensiteit en waargenome sitgemak in vergelyking met die deelnemer se gewone werkstasie parameters verbeter nie. Hierdie bevindinge is nie ten voordeel van die horisontale kykhoek nie. Nietemin, ondersteun die bevindinge van hierdie studie die gebruik van die "effens onder die horisontale" kykhoek as bevorderend om die pyn intensiteit te verminder en die sitgemak van 'n kantoorwerker te verbeter.
