Abstract:
In the present study, Uddeholm Vancron SuperClean cold work tool steel was investigated concerning wear resistance and fatigue strength, using laboratory and semi-industrial tests. The Uddeholm Vancron SuperClean was designed with the help of ThermoCalc calculations to contain a high amount of a carbonitride phase, which was suggested to improve tribological performance of this tool steel. In order to investigate the tested steel, galling tests with a slider-on flat-surface tribotester and semi-industrial punching tests were performed on an advanced high-strength steel, CP1180HD. Uddeholm Vanadis 8 SuperClean containing only a carbide phase and Uddeholm Vancron 40 containing a mixture of carbides and carbonitrides were also tested to compare the performance of the tool steels. The microstructure and wear mechanisms were characterized with scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the carbonitrides presented in Uddeholm Vancron SuperClean improved its resistance to material transfer and galling. Semi-industrial punching tests also confirmed that Uddeholm Vancron SuperClean cold work tool steel also possesses enhanced resistance to chipping and fatigue crack nucleation, which confirms the beneficial role of the carbonitride phase in wear resistance of cold work tool steel.

Abstract:
The effect of different inclusion contents on the VHCF strength of H13 tool steels is presented. Two different H13 tool steels were investigated: the Uddeholm Orvar® 2 Micronized obtained by conventional casting, and the Uddeholm Orvar® Supreme obtained by electroslag remelting (ESR). Ultrasonic tests were performed on Gaussian specimens (risk volume about 2300 mm3) up to 1010 cycles or up to failure and fracture surfaces were investigated with SEM in order to analyze the inclusions from which VHCF crack nucleated. Experimental results show that the VHCF strength estimated by using the Murakami’s model of the H13 Uddeholm Orvar® Supreme steel is about 15% larger than that of the H13 Uddeholm Orvar® 2 Micronized steel.

Abstract:
The many practical difficulties and longer lead time with heat treatment of mould steels after machining have led to increased demand for steels in prehardened condition, typically ~ 40HRC. At this hardness the steel possesses an optimal combination of high strength and machinability. The steels used for moulds require a wide range of demanding properties, among which high enough strength and toughness are the primary necessities in order to resist any deformation and dimensional change in mould during use. Uddeholm Impax HH which resembles the modified AISI P20 has been widely used for moulding of plastics and die-casting of low melting temperature metals. The common hardening process for Impax HH is conventional quenching and tempering. Hence, investigating the effect of hardening parameters on the required properties upon this steel grade is beneficial in improving it for better performance as a prehardened mould steel. In the present work, the effect of changes in austenitization temperature and consequently the prior austenite grain and martensite packet sizes on the tensile properties and impact toughness of Uddeholm Impax HH at the hardness of ~40HRC is studied. The results have shown reduction in impact toughness but no considerable change in yield and ultimate tensile strength upon increasing the austenitization temperature.

With the Uddeholm self-restricted thermal fatigue method, the transformation of phase constitutions and morphology of boride layer after 3000 cycles of thermal fatigue test was studied by XRD and SEM and the surface residual stress in the process of thermal fatigue test was researched by X-ray Stress Analyzer; the formation of the heat checking of boride layer was also analyzed. The results show that with the high strength and excellent thermal stability of boride layer, morphology of heat checking alters. Therefore, boronizing treatment of H13 steel improves its thermal fatigue behavior.
