Ukrainian motifs in A. S. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem in the Stalin era was perceived as a eulogy to the collective, while in late Soviet times the dominance of the collective and the tendency to violent solutions already irritated the Russian reader. The German historian Goetz Hillig saw Makarenko as a world pedagogical genius, created his scientific biography, and published a scholarly edition of his writings in German. Elena Tolstaya looks at The Poem, set in post-revolutionary Ukraine, in the aspect of Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism, and looks for possible responses to the actualities of the late 20s – early 30s.

For the first time information about Ukraine (Little Russia) — its geography, archeology, history, literature, historical figures — is extracted from the biography and creative heritage of Esenin. The information about Ukraine, which the future poet has gleaned or could learn from textbooks and fiction, hear from contemporaries, is given. Along the way, the primary and secondary school programs were analyzed and the question about the accuracy of the official names of educational institutions in the villages Konstantinovo and Spas-Klepiki was raised. Esenin’s interest in Ukrainian topics was emphasized from his youth. Esenin’s routes across the Ukrainian land have been clarified. Specific place names and hydronyms (names of cities, railway stations, rivers) and broader designations of territories (Scythia, Zaporozhye) are given. The textual details related to the writing of Ukrainian toponyms by the poet are noted.

Abstract:
Gogol’s letters to his schoolmate G.I. Vysotsky are of great importance for Gogol’s biography research. Three of them were written in 1827, when Gogol was in the 8th form of the Nizhyn gymnasium, and Vysotsky, who graduated in 1826, served in Ministry of Finance in St. Petersburg. The letters have already reflected the peculiarities of Gogol’s literary style. The history of the letters’ autographs can be traced by means of marks and stamps on them, as well as by publications and archival materials. Two letters (dated January 17 and June 26, 1827) were first published in 1854 by P.A. Kulish, who then handed over autographs to O.M. Bodyansky, whose archive was later partially acquired by A.A. Titov. After his death the letters were received by the State public library, from where in 1929 they were transferred to the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and in 1955 they were transferred to the Institute of Literature of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, where they are kept now. A copy of Gogol’s third letter to Vysotsky (dated March 19, 1827), now in the Russian state archive of literature and art, was sent to Gogol’s biographer V.I. Shenrok from Nizhyn by I.I. Tsekhmistrenko in 1887. However, it was published for the first time not by Shenrock, but by S. Manukhin in the newspaper “Russian Courier” on May 9, 1888. In April 1890 the manuscript got into the library of the University of St. Vladimir in Kiev. The professor of the University P.V. Vladimirov published and commented on the text of the letter, indicated the addressee, gave a paleographic description in the work From Gogol’s school years... (1890). Now the autograph is kept in the Institute of Manuscripts of Nat. library of Ukraine.

Abstract:
It cannot be said that the creative biography of the artist-architect Stefan Narębski (1892–1966) remains a completely unknown page in the history of art, but everything that has been written and published so far about the life and work of Stefan Narębski is only the top of the iceberg which is his complete biography. The author restores many forgotten and unknown facts of this biography, mainly based on the materials of the Archive of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, first of all, the artist’s own notes (“Diaries”), which had never been published before. Discoveries of this kind relate primarily to the childhood and adolescence of Narębski, held in the Caucasus and Vilnius; his participation in the 1905 revolution; his educational and creative activities in Włocławek in the 1920s; his connections with Stephen Batory University; as well as the repressions that he faced both during the years of the Nazi occupation of Lithuania and during the restoration of Soviet power here, in 1944–45. In the artistic heritage of Narębski, a close-up is highlighted by the types of residential buildings developed by him, educational institutions (museum, school, university department), modern churches, projects for the artistic transformation and decoration of public interiors (the residence of the archbishop; town halls in Vilnius and Torun). The theoretical development of the artistic training program for masters of architectural design (design and decoration of interiors), carried out by Narębski, and the practical implementation of this program at the Nicolaus Copernicus University contained an innovative beginning and provided the most important breakthrough of Polish post-war artistic pedagogy towards a modern, progressive methodology. Of great importance is the international aspect of the work of Narębski, whose personal biography is connected not only with Poland and the strongest impulses of Polish patriotism, but also with Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine (with the places where he studied, lived, worked, built and planned the construction of new objects). His contribution to the development of art and artistic pedagogy is subject to measurement on the scale of not only national but also Eastern European culture.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the little-known projects of printed books artistic design created by Stanisław Mieczysław Dębicki. It analyses the works performed by the artist between 1895 and 1911. Most of the projects were published in Lviv. Many of the works were designed for children, but most of them were aimed at adult readers. Each work created by the artist is unique and original, all of the projects reflect the author’s extremely different approach to the tasks, and they also demonstrate the evolution of his creative path. The basis of S. Dębicki creativity is rooted in the traditions of the local school. Relying on these traditions the artist discovered for himself new trends that had emerged in the fine arts. As a result, many illustrations of the artist reflect his efforts to establish the national style, and thus his understanding of the national culture. By maintaining contacts with Kraków he was able to study the novel ideas of Stanisław Wyspiański, some of which were adapted by him in Lviv. In addition, the artist based on his experience gained in Paris, and mainly in Vienna. Many works are the best example of the author’s affiliation with the Vienna “Secession” movement. 57 projects of the published books from Marek Reihenstein collection, stored today in Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv are an important complement to S. Dębicki’s creative personality and aesthetic priorities. Some of the projects embodied in the printed books reflect the artists’ collaboration with Stanisław Wyspiański and the publisher Alfred Altenberg, while the unrealized ones open new pages in the artist’s creative biography. Today the creativity of S. Dębicki best proves the transformation of books into the pieces of art, as well as his participation in the aesthetic culture of his time.
