Abstract:

Concepts such as "culture" and "language" (in the sense of speech as a means of communication) are applicable only to people. Without the grafting or education of such a person becomes a poorly adapted creature, practically an animal. The famous Mowgli, which was written by Kipling is not a fiction, but a reality that is still found today. A person becomes a person only in the human community. From birth, everyone “absorbs” all the achievements of the available environment. We can say that a "cultural layer" is applied to the animal base. This “layer” is very different in different communities.

Abstract:

At the present stage of integration process Ukrainian higher education institutions go through the difficult period of reforming. According to the new "Education law", modern higher education institutions will have the system reconstructions of educational process and transition to the modernized educational approach both for Ukrainian and foreign students. Thus, the idea of practical orientation of Ukrainian as a foreign language is approved in activity of language departments. First of all it is necessary to teach foreign students to read, to write, to speak Ukrainian and also to work independently with textbook. The basis issue of all educational transformations should be understanding of foreign student’s capacities and forecasting of personality development requirements in the conditions of adaptation. That’s why on a practical classes of Ukrainian as a foreign language the teacher of higher education institution is faced by a difficult task: to teach students to listen, to perceive, to remember a studying material, to develop the creative potential. The developing purposes have to be defined according to a concrete studying material and provide students with knowledge, practical skills, requirements to perform educational tasks creatively and qualitatively.

Abstract:

In the process of teaching the Ukrainian language of foreign students, the game is the most effective form of learning, as it promotes the development of interest in foreign language communication, creates a certain information base, forms the necessary language mechanisms. The game method is the pedagogical tool that is able to remove the language barrier and intensify the process learning Ukrainian as foreign language. In the game students acquire personal knowledge that becomes meaningful and emotionally colored to them, and it helps them to understand and feel the situation better. This, in turn, requires students to mobilize knowledge, encourages them to learn new things, broadens their horizons and forces them to master a set of communication skills. So the aim of the article is to observe the issue of teaching the Ukrainian as foreign language through the game method implication.

Abstract:

Introduction. European integration is one of the main vectors of the medical education development in Ukraine. Its important aspect is the particular attention to the language training of medical students. In 2017, the interns passed tests in English for the first time. Since 2017 – 2018 academic year the English language subtest will be included to the structure “Krok 1” for the students of such specialties as “Medicine”, “Stomatology”, and “Pharmacy”. The licensing examination, since 2018-2019, will evaluate medical students taking into account English language component. Although each basic subject contains no more than five English tasks, the Theoretical Departments can and should take part in the process of student training for new format of licensing examination.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the role of Anglicisms in the language of Ukrainian young adults, the motives of English borrowings&rsquo
usage, and the attitude of young people towards the presence of Anglicisms in the Ukrainian language. The study examined the language of young adults, newspapers and magazines, and popular TV programmes. Note fields, audio-recordings, and questionnaire were chosen for investigation of borrowings integrated in the Ukrainian language. The study revealed a constant usage of Anglicisms by young adults in Ukraine, despite their place of residence and occupation, focusing on the main areas where borrowings are used. It was suggested that English borrowings have become a significant part of the language used by young people in Ukraine.

Abstract:

The topicality of the chosen topic of study is determined by the growing role of communicative competence of youth in various socio-cultural environments in view of European integration of Ukraine, intercultural cooperation of communities, active migration processes. The aim is to provide a comparative analysis of language routines used by Ukrainians and Czechs in stereotypical communicative situations, such as addressing and attracting attention, greetings and farewells, acquaintance, expressing compliments. Abstract:

На заняттях з української мови як іноземної важливо забезпечувати формування у студентів навичок чотирьох видів мовленнєвої діяльності: читання, говоріння, письма й аудіювання. Відповідно навчальним матеріалом й інструментом для забезпечення навичок слугують тексти, робочі зошити, відеоматеріали, аудіофайли із, наприклад, новими словами, короткі аудіофайли із домашнім читанням текстів, фото із письмовими вправами, онлайн-дошки тощо. Таким чином існує нагальна потреба у збереженні й обміну цими файлами між викладачем і студентами. Найпопулярнішим способом залишається використання електронної пошти, мобільних додатків. Проте, під час дистанційного навчання можуть виникнути питання через різницю у часі між країнами студентів-іноземців та викладачем з України.
In Ukrainian as a foreign language classes, it is important to ensure that students develop the skills of four types of speaking activities: reading, speaking, writing and listening. Accordingly, textbooks, workbooks, videos, audio files with, for example, new words, short audio files with home reading of texts, photos with writing exercises, online boards, etc. are used as training materials and tools to provide skills. Thus, there is an urgent need to preserve and share these files between teacher and students. The most popular way is to use e-mail, mobile applications. However, during distance learning, questions may arise due to the time difference between the countries of foreign students and the teacher from Ukraine.

Abstract:

After a decade of suffering from a lack of attention in second language research, interest in motivational issues has recently shifted the focus of its analysis from the individual as learner to learning as participation in social activities and social worlds. If we accept the notion that language learning results from involvement in communicative events, then to what degree learners participate in an event, if at all, is crucial to that learning. In this thesis I add to the body of research that has begun to examine the complexities of the interface between individuals and learning contexts. I examine the historical, cultural and personal influences that a group of Ukrainian military officers bring to a NATO sponsored immersion program, as well as their perceptions of their place within the power structures that are inherent to this setting.
I argue that for the group of learners in this study, second language acquisition theories have not provided an adequate explanation for the reason why they did or did not participate in communicative events both inside and outside the classroom. Drawing on Vygotsky's (1962, 1978) language learning theories and Peirce's (1989, 1993, 1995, 1997) notions of social identity and investment to support my findings, I identify elements that served to marginalize these learners and disempower them, and which were responsible for their apparent lack of investment in language learning. I also suggest how, for some of these officers, changes in their social identities led to more opportunities to practice English and eventually to feel empowered both during the language course and once they returned home.

Abstract:

The importance of using an indigenous language as a medium of school instruction has been discussed in world education for a long time. This study focuses on the influence of the presence of a native language in the learning process of the students and the impact on their academic achievement, emotional conditions, and post-school lives. A qualitative method of research was used in the study, comprising 12 interviews among Ukrainian/Russian adopted and nonadopted students who attended Utah schools. Information obtained through interviews presented language levels of students (both native and English), academic achievement, and emotional conditions of students during the period of adaptation and after several years' living in the U.S. Interviews also provided information about the roles of schools, friends, and families in the learning process for Language Learning Students and their development of native and English languages. All data in this research is the students' perception of their languages skills, academic achievements, emotional conditions, and support (provided or not) from schools and families. In the chosen cases, the study intends to see if presence of the native language during the learning process in the school keeps influencing students' lives after graduating high school and whether it has an effect on continuing education and job opportunities. This work provides some recommendations on how schools can arrange a positive environment for Language Learning Students, support their native language development, and interact with students' families to achieve the common goal of high academic success and emotional stability of students.

Abstract:

Languages within one language family may be so closely related that their speakers often communicate, each using their own language. This phenomenon was investigated in African, Germanic and Romance languages and coined as semicommunication by Haugen (1966), and later became receptive multilingualism by Braunmü
ller (2002). This research attempts to find out if receptive multilingual communication is possible in Slavonic languages (Polish, Russian and Ukrainian). Besides, it was a great importance to define whether the success of communication is symmetric among the speakers of the mentioned languages. Finally, various cases of problematic understanding were analyzed with the main emphasis on the speakers&rsquo
strategies when they try to overcome reception problems. Methodically, 4 Russian-Ukrainian, 4 Polish-Ukrainian and 4 Polish-Russian conversations were recorded with the use of digital camera. Cases of problematic understanding were defined and transcribed with Exmaralda program, Partitur editor. Number of problematic utterances in relation to total number of utterances in discourse was the measure of communication success in each language constellation. In order to see the overall picture of how receptive multilingualism works in the three languages and in each constellation separately, the statistic research was done with SPSS program. The findings of the research revealed that receptive multilingual communication among Polish, Russian and Ukrainian speakers is generally successful, however, not symmetric with respect to understanding degree in different constellations.

Abstract:

Mediated public diplomacy plays an important role in attaining foreign policy objectives by communicating with foreign audiences in order to establish a dialogue intending to inform and influence. The Russian state-funded global network RT serves as an important tool of Russian mediated public diplomacy. Its purpose is not only to cover major global events that are often missed by the Western mainstream media, but also to apprise an international audience of an alternative pro-Russian perspective. Interestingly, although there are a few researches analysing Moscow's efforts to rebrand its international image in the last decade, there has been very little work done giving a good insight into Russian media. This dissertation seeks to participate in the discussion about public diplomacy in general by applying the framing theory as a tool of mediated diplomacy. A qualitative analysis of 97 articles discussing the effects of international sanctions imposed on Russia in the aftermath of the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, revealed a constructed pro-Russian narrative. Several strategies are pursued to convince its audience about the rightness of the Russian stance and gain support for the Kremlin's assertions. Finally, RT aims to wipe out the demonisation of Putin and its administration and counterbalance the penetration of the West in its sphere of influence.
