Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to analyze the positive experience of the Ukrainian diaspora in the implementation of national-patriotic education of youth in the 1950s and 1960s. The task of the research is to compare the situation in the countries located on different continents – Canada and Australia. The object of the research is the activities of the Union of Ukrainian Youth – SUM. This scientific problem has still remains the “white spot” in the Ukrainian studies. It has proved that the concept of national-patriotic education of the youth formed in Canada in the 1950s-1960s on the initiative of political migrants of the third wave of Ukrainian emigration. Great role in this process played WCFU. This determined the necessity to prepare the potential human resources for the struggle with the Soviet totalitarian regime: future fighters had to identify themselves with Ukrainian nation, love Ukraine and want its independence. The tasks of the Ukrainian educational system, the purpose of the educational ideal of Ukrainians in the diaspora, the main principles and directions of national-patriotic education has investigated. The main institutions that were to implement them have identified, such as following: church, school, family, youth organizations, cultural and educational societies. It have concluded that the main principles of national and patriotic education of Ukrainians were realized in both countries, and much attention was paid in this context to the development of Ukrainian schooling, preserving and spreading of Ukrainian culture, camps. In spite of significant difficulties, in the 1950s-1960s CYM СUM activities in Canada and Australia have brought a number of positive results. In particular, it promoted the unity of Ukrainian youth, the education of patriotism, self-identification, and continuity of traditions of national liberation struggle. At the same time, the nature of the measures implemented in these countries determined by the peculiarities of living in the countries of the new settlement, the size of the diaspora and its financial resources. In this context, CYM activities in Canada was more complex.

Abstract:
The article illustrates the relations between the national diaspora in Canada and Ukraine during 1991–2014. It is emphasized that during the long-term presence of Ukrainians in the cities of Canada the Ukrainian diaspora has been growing and consolidating around the civic organizations and Ukrainian cultural centers with the biggest ones being located in Ontario and Alberta, which are the places with the largest Ukrainian population. It provides the analysis of influence of the Ukrainian diaspora on the cooperation between Ukraine and Canada through civic organizations, the most influential of which are the following: Ukrainian Canadian Congress — acts as the representative of the Ukrainian diaspora before the government and people of Canada, coordinates and promotes its involvement in the cultural and public life of the country, and unites 33 Ukrainian and all-Canadian organizations and their branches; Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada — supports the religious education and Ukrainian publishing houses, arranges religious seminars on the study of Bible, Ukrainian rituals and traditions; Plast — promotes the complex patriotic self-education of the Ukrainian youth based on the Christian ethics principles, as the conscientious, responsible and meaningful citizens of the local, national and global communities and the Ukrainian society leaders; they also hold the leading positions in the civic organizations — in student’s clubs or in the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. At the same time, in Ukraine the civic organizations, such as the “Ukraine-Svit” company and Ukrainian World Coordinating Council cooperate with the national diaspora in Canada. It is emphasized that the intensification of relations between the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and Ukraine is the key component of the modern national ethnical policy. It is concluded that the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada created the positive image of Ukraine abroad that contributed to the recognition of its independence in 1991 and further establishment of connections between the countries. The article substantiates the perspectives for bilateral cooperation of countries in the field of politics, economics, trade, culture and education.

Abstract:
The article describes the division of the Ukrainian community of Canada in the interwar period into a number of public and political organizations. The focus is on the national and patriotic bloc, which opposed the communist one. The basis of this bloc constituted liberal the Ukrainian self-reliance league of Canada, nationalist the Ukrainian war veterans association in Canada, the Ukrainian national federation of Canada, conservative the Ukrainian catholic brotherhood of Canada, and the United hetman organization. The basis of the various conflicts in the bloc, including differences in ideological postulates of liberal, nationalist and conservative societies and views on the religion of Orthodox and Greek Catholics who were members of the organizations mentioned above are analyzed in the study. It is described how opposing parties resisted against each other, and what role the press played in those conflicts. The article also enlightens attempts of agreements between public organizations and mentions joint actions to support the Ukrainian issue in the world. The common goal could reconcile the national and patriotic public associations at the time of the formation of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee on November 7, 1940, which marked a new stage in the social and political life of the Ukrainian Diaspora, as it was emphasized in the article. The reasons that hindered Ukrainian societies from reaching a mutually acceptable consensus and promoted further aggravation of relations were elucidated. The main consequences of conflicts in the environment of national and patriotic public organizations were identified, namely how it was reflected in the social and political life of the Ukrainian diaspora during the interwar period, how it was perceived by the ruling circles of Canada, and how it was used by the communist groups.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to analyze the events surrounding the participation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in the World Expo–1967 exhibition in Montreal and to identify the features of this process, such as the actions of diaspora organizations to attract the attention of the Canadian government and the international community to the political status of Ukraine within the Soviet Union. The publication proves that the youth movement of the Ukrainian diaspora is able to influence the course of important political events, one of which was the Montreal World Exhibition. It was used by the Kremlin as a component of preparations for the 50th anniversary of the October Bolshevik coup in Petrograd on November 7, 1917. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian diaspora was preparing to celebrate the anniversaries of the Ukrainian settlements in Canada, the Ukrainian National Revolution of 1917–1921, and the creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. The author concluded that the Ukrainian Canadian community drew the attention of the Canadian government and the international community to the political status of Ukraine within the Soviet Union and contributed to the consolidation of all Ukrainian world in the fight for human rights in Soviet Ukraine and its proper place in the international political and legal environment. Despite the strong involvement of the Soviet Union’s State Security Committee’s agent network, the activities of Ukrainian youth organizations in Canada in July–August 1967 brought a number of positive gains. In particular, it fostered a sense of patriotism, self–identification, and continuity in the traditions of national liberation struggle. At the same time, the nature of the events was driven by local characteristics, the size of the diaspora and its financial resources. In this context, the activities of Ukrainian youth organizations in Canada during Expo-1967 were a kind of impetus for the further struggle for freedom and independence of the native generations of the state – Ukraine.

Abstract:
The article clarifies the influence of globalization on the musical culture of Ukraine, in particular, on international piano competitions. It emphases the role of global music organizations, which play an important integrative role in the processes of international artistic exchange and at the same time are a communication field for the demonstration of the best national artistic creative practices. In the field of international music competitions, the most influential organizations, in particular, are the World Federation of International Music Competitions, European Union of Music Competitions for Youth, Alink-Argerich Foundation, etc. The study of information materials of Ukrainian international piano competitions, which are the members of these prestigious international organizations, revealed global trends in the development of the competition and festival movement. Specific examples of international music festivals and other art projects initiated by the organizing committees of Ukrainian piano competitions have shown that they contribute to the development and promotion of Ukraine's cultural identity globally, help spread the best national traditions of musical performance in the world and are one of the best forms of cultural diplomacy.

Abstract:
The article substantiates the reasons of the split in the Ukrainian communist movement in Canada in the mid-1930s at the peak of its popularity. They consisted of acquainting of its supporters with information about dekulakization, the Holodomor of 1932–1933, the Bolshevik repressions on the territory of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic, and so on. It clearly describes how this conflict took place in the Ukrainian labour-farmer temple association, which united Ukrainian communists, how it was perceived by its members, what consequences it led to and how it affected on spreading of communist views among Ukrainians in Canada. The society was divided into those who unquestioningly believed or knew the truth and equally supported Stalin's policy in Ukraine and those who condemned it and saw a different way of further life in the workers 'and peasants' state. It shows how the communist movement developed in the 1930s, how the so-called socialist segment stood out from it, who its supporters were and what ideas they professed. It is worth noting that for some time the "opportunists", that formed Federation of Ukrainian Labour-Farmer Organizations, could not decide on their socio-political position and hesitated on whose side to stand and whether to join the Ukrainian national-patriotic bloc of organizations or to function separately, despite the small number. The leading members of the newly created organization were D. Lobay, T. Kobzey, S. Khvaliboga, Y. Elendyuk, and M. Zmiyovsky. In August 1928, M. Mandryka arrived to Canada, delegated by the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Revolutionaries in Prague to seek financial support for Ukrainian socialist institutions in Czechoslovakia. It was to be a short-term mission, that transformed into a permanent staying overseas. M. Mandryka managed to unite Ukrainian socialists who had nothing to do with the ULFTA. The research also describes the directions of activity of Ukrainian socialists in Canada, their ties with other public organizations, political parties and future relations with former like-minded people. An attempt is made to evaluate the socialist movement and establish its significance for the social and political life of the diaspora.

Abstract:
In the interwar period of the twentieth century, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Canada tried to expand its influence on the public life in the diaspora. To accomplish this task, it enlisted the support of the conservative Canadian Sitch association (reorganized into the United hetman organization in 1934). In its turn, it helped the Sitch in every possible way and provided the permission for the legal functioning of their organization from the Canadian authorities. The monarchists published the articles about their activities and tasks of the society in the pages of Greek Catholic newspapers, such as "Canadian Ukrainian", "Ukrainian News". However, in the 30s of the twentieth century Greek Catholics and monarchists have broken off their relations. Coming of the new bishop, Vasyl Ladyka, instead of Nikita Budka, who began to distance himself from the society in the 1930s, resulted in the creation of the Greek Catholic own organization, the Ukrainian Catholic brotherhood, in 1932. Now UCB had to defend their views before the public. In the religious sphere, the society spread the Catholic faith in the Ukrainian rite, together with priests created parishes, built churches, supported church institutions, organizations, and so on. In the cultural sphere, it founded and financed Ukrainian schools, evening courses and lectures on Ukrainian studies, held concerts, sports competitions, drama performances, built people`s homes, and so on. In the public field it organized orphanages, shelters, hospitals, summer camps for young people, youth centers and so on. Not so actively, but still the fraternity reacted on the political events in Ukraine and joined the general actions of the national patriotic bloc of the Ukrainian public associations in Canada in support of compatriots. As a result, Greek Catholics became more actively involved in the social and political life of the diaspora on equally with Orthodox and communists.

Abstract:
The article are investigated the domestic historiography of French-Canadian nationalism. The article analyzes approaches to French-Canadian nationalism, both by researchers in independent Ukraine and by representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. It is noted that the domestic historiography of the French-Canadian question can be divided into four directions: the genesis of French-Canadian nationalism; research about the status of the French language in Quebec and Canada in general; the relations between Quebec and the Federation Center; «Quiet Revolution» in Quebec and the French-Canadian national issue at present. It is established that in the research of French-Canadian nationalism in domestic historiography, some researchers focus not only on the historical aspects of this issue, but also on political and legal ones. This approach from the standpoint of theory of state and law allows us better understand some aspects of French-Canadian nationalism. It has been found that most researchers focus their attention on the study of the French-Canadian national question of the period from Quiet Revolution in Quebec in 1960s and the 1990s. Attention also is drawn that this lack of coverage in the domestic historiography of the French-Canadian question of the period before the «Quiet Revolution» in Quebec needs further research to better understand the specifics of the problem. It is emphasized that due to the problem of access to Canadian archival sources when researching the issue in Ukraine, it is extremely important the recent publication of documents on the Internet, which can significantly affect the future prospects of domestic historiography of the French-Canadian problem.

Abstract:
The formation and development of the Ukrainian school and educational affair as the basis for the professional training of Ukrainian youth in the Western countries in the second half of the XX-th century is examined in the article. The emphasis was given to the complexity and multiplicity of this process, which was caused by the socioeconomic and educational policies of the states, which became a new homeland for the Ukrainians, geography and compactness of their resettlement, employment in the different branches of the economy, the presence in the diaspora of the professional intelligentsia, its national awareness, the state religious life, etc. Accordingly, in different countries (Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Canada, USA, Australia, Argentina), this process was different, more or less intense and had results, but it still remains an object of interest as an important support of native cultural heritage, an inexhaustible source of preserving its spirituality bearers. The institutional forms and types of obtaining of pedagogical education by Ukrainians in the Western countries of the second half of the 20th century, the peculiarity of teaching and educational activities in different types of educational establishment and the main tendencies of the development of the Ukrainian school and educational affairs are presented. Among them: an expansion of the network of pre-school establishments, primary, secondary and high schools in connection with the arrival of emigrants to countries of Western Europe, America and Australia; public uniting efforts of leading Ukrainian public associations in preserving the national identity and spirituality of Ukrainians born outside Ukraine's native land; development of scientifically grounded, adapted to the needs and conditions of Ukrainians living in the diaspora of the theory of teaching and national education of younger generations; improving the content of studying and educational process in all types of schools, bringing it to the standards of the existing state education system and the increased requirements of economic and cultural life of the countries that have become a new homeland for Ukrainians.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of results of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in “Statistics” Discipline (referred hereafter as Olympiad) held in the National Academy of Statistics, Accounting and Audit (NASAA) in 2019. Given that NSAA Olympiad in statistics has been organized since 2012, the authors analyze change in the geographical structure of Olympiad participants in the period under study. Olympiad – 2019 engaged 46 participants from 21 Ukrainian HEEs. The largest share of participants comes from northern regions of Ukraine (52.2%), which is 26.7 percentage points higher than in 2012; nearly one of the four participants (23.9%) is from the Central Ukraine and 17.4% – from the Western Ukraine, with the latter two shares being almost unchanged, and 6.5% come from the East of Ukraine, which is 4.4 percentage points lower than in 2012. Of the HEEs located in Eastern regions of Ukraine, only Donetsk National University was represented, accommodated temporarily in the city of Vinnytsia and, therefore, counted in the Central region by geographic locality. The largest number of Olympiad participants was in 2013 (85 students), with nearly 25% of participants coming from Eastern regions of Ukraine, and Olympiad events arranged as part of international collaboration with the Russian Federation. It was 8 Russian students that came to Ukraine that time: three from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics; three from Saint-Petersburg State Economic University, and two from Transbaikal State University. The study reveals that 56 students from 16 Ukrainian HEEs were awarded over eight years of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in “Statistics” Discipline. The leadership is with Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (15 awards or 26.8% of the total), nearly 18% of awards was received by students of NASAA, 12,5% – by students of Dnipropetrovsk Oles Honchar National University, 7% – Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman, and 7% – Sumy State University. The analysis of mistakes made by Olympiad participants in 2019 shows that the most frequent ones occurred in the thematic sections: “Correlation analysis” and “Forecasting”. However, as the Olympiad participants used creative approaches to problem solution and demonstrated the mature statistical thinking they could be considered as professionally qualified. The authors gave firm arguments supporting the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in “Statistics” Discipline: it is useful for popularization of statistical literacy among the youth and fostering logical and unconventional thinking, promotion of their professional and intellectual development etc.

Abstract:
The article is concerned with life and creative path of P. Virskyi and the ensemble he leads in the context of cultural diplomacy. The author analyses that the aspiration to create realistic and folk plays by nature has influenced the artist in his exploring and further developing the folk dance. Therefore, applying the experience of folk talents, Virskyi was committed to create characters of Ukrainian stage dance, expanded and enriched its expressiveness. Pavlo Virskyi directed some choreographic performances already in the first days of his activity as choreographer, but his actual work on the formation of the Ukrainian stage dance started in 1936, particularly following successful performance of the outstanding theatrical play “Zaporozhets za Dunaiem” (Eng. A Zaporizhian (Cossack) Beyond the Danube).In 1937, Virskyi and Bolotov organized the first ever in Ukraine folk dance ensemble and quit Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine, where they headed a ballet group. The choreographers involved in the ensemble skilled young people as well as a team of experienced ballet dancers, among whom was M. Ivashchenko − their old friend and companion, brilliant performer of folk dances. Later B. Tairov and I. Kurylov engaged in choreographic process. The ensemble captured people’s attention, successfully performing at the VI World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow in the summer of 1957. The group of youngsters of the ensemble attained the title of winners of the VI World Festival and was awarded gold medals and the first-place diploma (soloists V. Kotliar, L. Zastrozhnova, H. Chapkis, N. Birka, L. Sarafanov, B. Mokrov, V. Holyk). Artists of the dance ensemble of the Ukrainian SSR performed for the audience from many countries of the world: Poland, Czechoslovakia, China, Vietnam, Cuba, Angola, France, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela. All of the countries equally acknowledged the ensemble. The troupe performances abroad not only were a great success, but also sparked a massive political resonance. The national press continuously wrote about the unsurpassed art created by renowned Ukrainian choreographer P. Virskyi and his invaluable contribution to the development of Ukrainian folk dance choreography. V. Korniichuk, Honoured Journalist of Ukraine, author of the article “To pioneer of Ukrainian folk dance” noticed the festive concert dedicated to the 90-annivarsary of P. Virskyi’s birth. In his speech before the concert, Y. Stanishevskyi, Doctor of Arts, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, member of the International Academy of Dance, declared, “P. Abstract:
The Crimea and Sevastopol are considered to be multinational regions, and within them – especially in the Crimea region – such an issue as interethnic and interreligious accord has been relevant at various points in history. With new subjects having joined the Russian Federation, this issue has not become any less relevant. On the contrary, due to new challenges of the modern world, such as extremism and terrorism, this issue has acquired new aspects. On the one hand, there exists the internal matter of the Crimean Tatars in the Crimea and Sevastopol, which needs to be examined within the context of starting an interethnic and inter-confessional dialog, while on the other hand the presence of external challenges prompts to consider developing interethnic and inter-confessional accord among the youth, primarily among college students, them being the most well-organized youth group. In light of this fact, the study conducted in 2017-2019 with financial support from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research within the framework of research project number 17-06-00440/19 and titled “Interethnic and interreligious unity among Crimea and Sevastopol college students: monitoring and analyzing the development level” allows to determine mechanisms for achieving such unity. According to the authors of this work, interethnic unity includes ethnic attitudes, willingness to partake in interethnic contact, which, among other things, develops national and territorial identity. The value component was examined during the course of empirical analysis: traditional values are in fact present in students’ consciousness; professional growth and self-fulfillment were identified as being important, while values attributed to general religious and ethnic interests were deemed insignificant. Also observed were deviations in the process of identity development among young Ukrainians. Observed within this youth group was a low degree of satisfaction with social provisions, the importance of such values as freedom, independence and religious unity; they feel that they belong to their own Ukrainian culture, which differs from Russian culture; for the most part Ukrainians assume that the Russian government cannot effectively protect their sovereignty. The results of this study allowed for determining the structural elements of interethnic and inter-confessional unity within various ethnic youth groups, with regards to components of young people’s national, territorial and cultural identity. The process of developing interethnic and inter-confessional unity within various ethnic groups of Crimea’s youth should be based on principles of regional patriotism, on creating common cultural codes, developing a positive image of Russia, enhancing young people’s economic and social standing, creating opportunity for professional growth together with social lifts, consolidating young people based on generational interests aimed at self-expression and self-fulfillment.

Abstract:
Introduction We investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its risk factors, and the influence of socioeconomic status, in Canadian children and adolescents. Methods Canadian Health Measures Survey cycle 1 (2007–2009) and cycle 2 (2009–2011) respondents aged 10 to 18 years who provided fasting blood samples were included (n = 1228). The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) consensus definition for children and adolescents (10–15 years) and worldwide adult definition (≥ 16 years) were used to diagnose MetS. Prevalence of MetS and its risk factors were calculated and differences by socioeconomic status were examined using χ2 tests. Results The prevalence of MetS was 2.1%. One-third 37.7%) of participants had at least one risk factor, with the most prevalent being abdominal obesity (21.6%), low HDL-C (19.1%) and elevated triglyceride levels (7.9%). This combination of abdominal obesity, low HDL-C and elevated triglyceride levels accounted for 61.5% of MetS cases. Participants from households with the highest income adequacy and educational attainment levels had the lowest prevalence of one or more MetS risk factors, abdominal obesity and low HDL-C. Conclusion The prevalence of MetS (2.1%) was lower than previously reported in Canada (3.5%) and the USA (4.2%¬–9.2%), potentially due to the strict application of the IDF criteria for studying MetS. One-third of Canadian children and adolescents have at least one risk factor for MetS. Given that the risk for MetS increases with age, these prevalence estimates, coupled with a national obesity prevalence of almost 10% among youth, point to a growing risk of MetS and other chronic diseases for Canadian youth.

Abstract:
The article reproduces the problems and challenges of the time of Ukrainian journalism in exile on the basis of reports and discussions of congresses of Ukrainian journalists in the USA and Canada, discussion of the Code of Ethics of Ukrainian Journalists, and publications of the 1960s and 1970s. In particular, the research focus is on the conceptual reports of V. Sofroniv-Levytsky and A. Dragan, delivered at the First Congress of Ukrainian Journalists of America and Canada. V. Sofroniv-Levytsky's speech considers methodological issues of social responsibility of Ukrainian journalism. A. Dragan formulated the Code of Principles for Editorial Commentators and the Code of Ethics for Journalists. Numerous analytical publications of the Ukrainian Journalist magazine addressed current issues of Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora, including ideological dominance and ties with soviet Ukraine. In particular, N. Ripetsky singled out the idea of the World Federation of Ukrainian Journalists. V. Davydenko, O. Zinkevych, A. Ivakhniuk and others analyzed problematic aspects of journalistic ethics. The problems of the new generation of journalists in the Ukrainian press of the diaspora are discussed in the publications of O. Kuzmovich, G. Matkovska, A. Shul, and others. The key tasks of the Ukrainian press in the diaspora are comprehended in O. Pitlyar's articles ("Ukrainian free press and its tasks"), in the articles of I. Durbak ("What is the Ukrainian press for?", "Mission and responsibility of the Ukrainian press"). I. Durbak believes that the press should cover such topical issues as mixed marriages, work with children and youth, the life of the Ukrainian community in different countries, etc. The relevance of the world of Viry Ke about the need for the function of professionally specialized periodicals is respected; about the social opinion of the journalist; about the ethical aspects of the practical journalist (article "Journalist"). I. Kedryn regarded the idea of Ukrainian statehood as the main mission of the social vocation of the Ukrainian free press. Developing L. Myshuga's theory of "two homelands", the researcher believes that the Ukrainian English-language press is also subordinated to this idea (article "On the problems of the press and journalism").

Abstract:
The article deals with the OSCE Document "Freedom of Religion or Belief and Security. Policy Guidance"(2019) from the perspective of the status of freedom of conscience and belief, as well as the political and legal realities that prevailes in the Western countries (USA, Canada, EU member states), in Russian Federation, and in Ukraine. Author proves that attempts to balance issues of religious freedom and national security in Western countries after the 9/11 led to the establishment of a new security regime, primarily in the United States. Some essential changes designed for an effective response to current and future threats were introduced in national legal system by lawmakers in Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Italy. With all this going on, many policymakers and commentators called governments to use all necessary means to not allow terrorists and religious extremists to take advantage from what could be regarded as a vulnerability of Western democracies, namely their openness, liberal legislative regime, democratic procedures, sensitivity to human rights and human dignity. The author emphasizes that, despite some shortcomings that followed the shaping of the new security’s regime, it contains obvious components that are quite in the line with the 2019 OCSE Document’s fundamentals. Absolutely opposite, author argues, is the approach to the religious freedom and national security dichotomy in Russian Federation. The restrictions of the religious freedom in this country motivated by the interests of national security, are such brutal that destroy the main pillars of the international law in this realm and put Russia on a par with the most flagrant violators of religious freedoms all over the world. Finally, inspired by the Ukrainian model, author is proving that almost thirty years long experience in forming a model of state-church relations adequate to the spirit and letter of internationally recognized principals in the field of the freedom of conscience and belief can be productive even if the country faces enormous external and internal challenges and the balance between religious freedom and national security can be achieved even for a country at war.
