Ooi, S. W. "Development of novel ULC/IF strip steels." Thesis, Swansea University, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.638371.

Full text
Abstract:
As part of this study, two experimental Ultra Low Carbon (ULC)/Interstitial Free (IF) steel grades were investigated, one based on combined vanadium and titanium additions and the other based on titanium only additions. The overall aim is to explore the potential of vanadium additions for the development of novel ULC/IF strip steel grades for automotive applications. The experimental study employed hardness testing, tensile testing, optical and transmission electron microscopy carried out on both novel steel grades. Light optical microscopy and mechanical testing was performed, using both steel grades in the as received (cold rolled) conditions as well as to numerous batch and continuous annealed cycle designed to result in suitably high formability values, thus optimising the applications potential of both steel grades. Grain size measurements were also carried out in both batch and continuous annealed samples and samples subjected to simple annealing experiments, for studying the evolution of grain size with time and temperature. The volume fraction of precipitated species under equilibrium conditions is also being calculated using solubility product equation and MTDATA thermodynamic modelling software. The primary conclusion drawn from this investigation is that novel Ti-V strip steels have the potential for achieving very high formability values employing lower dwell temperatures during continuous annealing. Precipitate studies of the novel ULC steels helped identify the major role of TiC precipitates in retarding the recrystallisation behaviour as well as the grain growth of {111} texture grains during annealing for both strip steel grades. It has been confirmed that VC precipitation on TiN during coiling plays a key role for stabilising carbon. The processing of Ti-V grades could be tailored producing bake hardening ULC grades, thus increasing the strength of the formed component without any additional costs.

Lavaire, Nicolas. "Etude des phénomènes à l'origine du vieillissement des aciers pour emballage à Ultra Bas Carbone (ULC) : apport du Pouvoir ThermoElectrique à la caractérisation des états microstructuraux." Lyon, INSA, 2001. http://theses.insa-lyon.fr/publication/2001ISAL0072/these.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The strain ageing of steels is associated to the presence of mobiles interstitial atoms (carbon and/or nitrogen) susceptible to precipitate i nto matrix (quench ageing) or to segregate on dislocations (strain ageing) in strained steels. The consequences of ageing are essentially : an increase of mechanical resistance, a decrease of ductility, stretch strain appearance (Lüders’s bands, striction) which conduct to the degradation of drawing properties. On the other hand, the strain ageing can improved the performance of steel during baking treatment after automotive bady drawing (“Bake Hardenablee” steel). In this work, paraùeters which influence kinetic and amplitude of ageing in Ultra Low Carbon (ULC, few 10exp-3% of carbon and nitrogen) steels are identified and pondered: Free interstitial atoms content, strain and ageing treatment (temperature and time). The determination of free interstitial contents (carbon and nitrogen) is particularly detailed. It emerges that internal friction (IF) measurements, usually used for that purpose, does not allow a quantitative determination. An original methodology is developed by using ThermoElectric Power (TEP) measurement. TEP and IF techniques associated to others (TEM, Tomographic Atom nitrogen) allowed us to study the carbon precipitation in ULC steels and to propose a description of the carbon and nitrogen microstructural states during the various stages of steel processing. It was also demonstrated that the TEP measurement allowed to follow the segregation kinetics of interstitial atoms on dislocations. The results showed that the quantity of interstitial atoms which segregate on dislocations was a function of strain and initial quantity of free interstitial atoms. It is possible to distinguish the carbon and the nitrogen. The study of the re-strain of a strain aged ULC steel showed the de-pinning of dislocations and the delivery of interstitial atoms forming Cottrell’s atmospheres. These atoms are again available to participate in a following ageing. Finally, certain of experimental results needs to consider some substitutionnal-interstitial interactions in this type of steels. These interactions open interesting perspectives of optimisation of these steel grades

In 1991, the first UDC schedules in Lithuanian language were published as an abridged UDC edition adapted for Lithuanian public libraries. In the period 1992-1993 separate fascicles of complete Russian UDC tables continued to be translated, adapted and published for Lithuanian libraries. As the need for a standard Lithuanian edition has become more apparent, the Lithuanian National Library started preparation of the new edition in 1995. At the time of this report more than 64,000 classes of the UDC MRF database have been translated into Lithuanian; several volumes of the new Lithuanian edition have already been published and others are in preparation.

Abstract:
In Slovenia, the majority of libraries use the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). The authors give an overview of the extent of the use of classification in both open access and bibliographic control in their country. Since 1991 there have been no editions of the UDC published in the Slovenian language and this paper announces the change that occurred when two very important tools were made available to UDC users in 2006 and 2007 respectively. The new Slovenian translation of the UDC was produced by the National and University Library (NUL) in Ljubljana in 2007. This Web edition uses the original structure of the ISO 2709 file format which allows searching of UDC numbers (string searching and full text searching), searching UDC captions, notes, examples, etc. The tool has a user friendly web interface for browsing and navigating UDC schedules via hyperlinks, facilitating checking and selection of an appropriate class mark. At the same time a group of authors in the Slovenian National Library published a Slovenian UDC manual addressing the specific needs of Slovenian libraries and established practice in subject indexing. The manual is abundant with practical examples for both inexperienced and advanced users of UDC

UDC is widely used in all types of libraries in the Czech Republic (Czechia). The classification plays an important role in the National Library as well as the entire library information network. It is central to the subject authority file of the National Library of the Czech Republic (NL CR) and its bibliographic services. The author explains the importance and potential of UDC use online especially in a multilingual context and illustrates this with examples from the national union catalogue, the Czech Uniform Information Gateway (UIG), the Multilingual Subject Access to Library Catalogues (MSAC) system and the Multilingual Content Aggregation System (M-CAST) projects. The advantages of using UDC in improving precision and recall are explained using the M-CASt system.

Abstract:
Social tagging systems, known as ‘folksonomies’, represent an important part of web resource discovery as they enable free and unrestricted browsing through information space. Folksonomies consisting of subject designators (tags) assigned by users, however, have one important drawback: they do not express semantic relationships either hierarchical or associative between tags. As a consequence, the use of tags to browse information resources requires moving from one resource to another, based on coincidence and not on the pre-established meaningful or logical connections that may exist between related resources. We suggest that the semantic structure of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) may be used in complementing and supporting tag-based browsing. In this work, two specific questions were investigated: (1) Are terms used as tags in folksonomies included in the UDC? and (2) Which facets of UDC match the characteristics of documents or information objects that are tagged in folksonomies? A collection of the most popular tags from Amazon, LibraryThing, Delicious and 43Things was investigated. The universal nature of UDC was examined through the universality of topics and facets covering diverse human interests which are at the same time interconnected and form a rich and intricate semantic structure. The results suggest that UDC-supported folksonomies could be implemented in resource discovery, in particular in library portals and catalogues.

The Archive contains over 2 million items of TV and video, 300,000 hours of audio, 6 million still photographs, over 4 million items of sheet music, and over half-a-million documents and records. It is a working media library, fulfilling some 4,000 loans per week, as well as preserving content as part of the UK’s national cultural heritage. A team of cataloguers and media managers classify a selection of current content, as well as enhancing cataloguing and classification of legacy content. There are two major classification schemes used in the Archive, both numerical, and one based on UDC. Lonclass, based on UDC, was developed first, then Telclass, which is used by the Natural History Unit in Bristol. In addition, there are many and various controlled vocabularies that have been developed to tag content in the different nations (Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) and the English regions.

Steed, Elizabeth Anne. "The development and evaluation of the UCL-Diabetes Self-Management Programme (UCL-DSMP)." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446815/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the development and evaluation of two self-management interventions for patients with type 2 diabetes. The first (the UCL-DSMP) was a theoretically based group intervention, targeting the behavioural and psychosocial demands of diabetes. The second, which was not formally evaluated due to poor uptake, additionally included social support skills training and required attendance with a partner. Development included a systematic review of previous interventions including analysis of component efficacy, focus groups with health care professionals and patients, and piloting of the interventions. For each intervention a manual specifying content and facilitation techniques was produced. The UCL-DSMP was compared to standard treatment in individuals with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria or proteinuria. Participants (n=124) completed assessments preintervention, immediately post-intervention (IPI) and at 3 and 9 month follow-ups. The UCL-DSMP significantly improved diet (p 0.001), exercise (p 0.001), and blood glucose monitoring (p 0.001) at IPI relative to controls. Results were retained for exercise and blood glucose monitoring at both 3 and 9 months follow-up (p 0.05). Diabetes specific quality of life was better in the intervention group relative to controls at all follow-ups (p 0.05). There were no differences on generic quality of life or psychological wellbeing. Knowledge was improved by the intervention (p 0.001) as was behaviour specific self- efficacy (p 0.05), which was identified as a significant mediator of change in exercise (p 0.05) and blood glucose monitoring (p 0.05) at 3 and 9 months respectively. Illness beliefs, specifically belief in treatment effectiveness (p 0.01) and control (p 0.05) improved following the intervention at IPI, however results were not retained in the longer term and beliefs were not significant mediators of behaviour change. No clear or consistent predictors of efficacy were identified. These findings suggest the UCL-DSMP may be a useful intervention for patients with type 2 diabetes. Areas for further development and recommendations for clinical practice are discussed.

Abstract:
Deweyâ s Decimal Classification was introduced in India in 1915 by Asa Don Dickinson (1876- 1960), a student of Melvil Dewey, on his appointment as Librarian in Punjab University, Lahore. Soon after, India became its largest user of the system in Asia. It is, however, unknown when and how UDC was first used in India. The earliest reference to UDC can be found in Ranganathanâ s classic Prolegomena to library classification (1937), wherein he made a comparative study of the then existing classification systems in order to derive some normative principles of classification, but more so to demonstrate the supremacy of his own system, Colon Classification (CC). Nevertheless, it is known that some libraries were using UDC by the early 1950s.

Gnoli, Claudio. "The UDC Philosophy Revision: First Report." UDC Consortium, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/200633.

Abstract:
The author of this report has been charged by the UDC Consortium to study the possibility of a revision of class 1 Philosophy. Psychology, of the Universal Decimal Classification. In order to explore the situation and discuss possibilities of revising Class 1, an informal working group was formed at the beginning of 2009 by the author of this report. Members of the working group agreed that the revised class should have a fully faceted structure. One basic step in the revision study is to identify the facets needed to express the contents of philosophical knowledge appropriately. To this purpose, one starting point was provided by examination of the facets of philosophy in existing classifications, in particular BC2. The next steps will be to pay more attention to the details of classes and subclasses, and to the update of terminology and presentation of the schedule. All these components are expected to be included in a final proposal for revision of class 1.
