Abstract:
Objective: To review what is known about the cost of leg ulcers, and venous leg ulcers in particular. Method: Searches of the Medline and Cochrane Library databases. Reviewing reference lists of personally gathered articles in the field of chronic leg ulcers. Synthesis: Most publications dealing with the economics of leg ulcers are cost studies assessing the cost of different dressings or bandages, and only a few have given estimates of the total costs of leg ulcer management. The latter, in conjunction with accurate epidemio-logical data, are essential to estimate the nationwide costs of leg

Abstract:
Leg and foot ulcers are symptoms of very different diseases. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the differential diagnosis of leg ulcers. The majority of leg ulcers occur in the lower leg or foot. In non-venous ulcers the localization in the foot area is more frequent. The most frequent underlying disease is chronic venous disease. In 354 leg ulcers, Koerber found 75.25% venous leg ulcers, 3.66% arterial leg ulcers, 14.66% ulcers of mixed venous and arterial origin and 13.5% vasculitic ulcers. In the Swedish population of Skaraborg, Nelzen found a venous origin in 54% of the ulcer patient

Abstract:
Tropical ulcer is a very specific form of cutaneous ulceration. It occurs worldwide in most tropical and a number of subtropical areas. The disease occurs mainly in older children and young adults with children under the age of 5 and adults over 45 years rarely being affected. Ulcers occur most commonly on the lower leg but may occur on the upper limb. Although most ulcers normally heal slowly over many weeks or months, some ulcers may recur. Recognised complications include squamous cell carcinoma, gangrene and osteitis, although these are rare. A number of authors have reported on the diseas

An ulcer is an open wound that remains unhealed even after weeks of treatment. These types of wounds require a long process of treatment due to other underlying health problems. Having an unhealing, painful and often infected wound decreases patients’ life quality significantly. The treatment includes using wound dressing applied by nurses, to protect the wound from infections, collect exudate and provide a closed and sterile environment. During a treatment, which could last for months, patients experience a lot of emotional and physical challenges. Deva is a design concept proposing the use o

A leg ulcer is generally considered to be any break in the skin on the lower leg (below the knee) or on the foot, which has been present for more than six weeks. Typically the condition is a consequence of disease of the circulatory system, and can cause considerable disability. The Auckland leg ulcer study is a community-based study of leg ulceration conducted in the North Auckland and Central Auckland health districts of New Zealand. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence of leg ulcers in the community and investigate several possible risk factors for the condition. Cases

Ulcers of the human skin are difficult to cure and a massive burden to patients. Their treatment costs in the UK are in excess of £ 100 million annually (1989). Both suffering and costs can be reduced significantly by establishing if an ulcer is responding to treatment. Any measurement device must not make any contact with the patient in order to avoid pain, damage or infection of the wound. This work describes a novel non invasive measurement method for superficial skin ulcers. Measurement is carried out using a new version of colour coded structured light method to obtain three dimensional s

We have tested our technique in a randomized clinical trial in patients with chronic leg ulcers. The goal of using a hard backboard is to reduce the chances of damaging the victim’s neurological functions because of movement of unstable or injured vertebrae.
