Abstract:
This paper addresses an intriguing intergenerational encounter between Micha Ullman (b. Tel Aviv 1939), one of Israel’s most prominent senior artists, and Ronen Sharabani (b. Tel Aviv 1974), a young media artist. The two artists’ otherwise divergent practices converge in their use of sand and red earth as their primary media. The paper brings Mieke Bal’s concept of migratory aesthetics and Jill Bennett’s phenomenological approach to trauma-related art to bear on Ullman’s fragile earth installations and perforated sand tables, and on Sharabani’s projections of Virtual Reality onto sand. Also addressed is Sharabani’s series Vitual Territories (2019), in which digitally manipulated views from Google Earth probe geographical sites that resonate with migratory histories. The paper traces two main trajectories upon which the oeuvres of Ullman and Sharabani interface. The first category, “treacherous sands”, relates to installations involving sand tables and other containers of soil. In turn, the category of “fragile traces” addresses installations that feature various architectural ground plans modeled in sand. In these installations, sand is the quintessential terra infirma. At the same time, however, the paper proposes that through the haptic appeal of the medium of sand, these installations counter the pervasive anxiety of shifting ground with an augmented sense of bodily presence.

Abstract:
Clahsen and Felser (CF) have written a beautiful and important paper. I applaud their integrative empirical approach, and believe that their theoretical account is largely correct, if not in some of its specific claims, at least in its broader assumptions. CF directly compare their shallow structure hypothesis (SSH) with a model that my colleagues and I have proposed for aspects of the neurocognition of first and second language: the “declarative/procedural” (DP) model. Although some of CF's discussion accurately depicts the DP model and its relation to the data, they also make a few critical errors. Here, I first summarize the DP model in both first language (L1) and adult-learned second language (L2), in order to be able to contrast it with the SSH, and then address the relevant problems in CF. For further details on the DP model and L1, see Ullman (2001a, 2001c, 2004) and Ullman et al. (1997). For the model as it applies to L2, see Ullman (2001b, 2005).

Full text
Abstract:
Uppsatsen avhandlar Rapid Dominance genom Shock and Awe.
The thesis discusses Rapid Dominance and Shock and Awe. A theory developed by the authors Ullman and Wade, published in a paper 1996. The paper called Shock and Awe Achieving Rapid Dominance was intended to develop a new way for the U.S. military to plan and execute operations. After the Cold War were inevitable changes of the U.S. military's resources taking place. United States Armed Forces would be reduced. The authors of the theory wanted to develop a concept that made the Armed Forces able to manage this change. To manage this change, the authors wanted to develop a concept that could work as a doctrine in the future. The concept would require fewer resources but provide the same or even more power than they previously admitted concepts. The theory is illustrated by a study on how the theory applied in the planning of the Iraq war in 2003. Iraq war which would be characterized by a plan intended to utilize modern technology for activity against selected Iraqi military targets in the military command and information dissemination to create confusion in the Iraqi troops to the will to fight would end by the shock and awe they experienced. The study concludes with a discussion about the planning of operations and the generalization of Ullman and Wade's theory. The author concludes that the thoughts of the theory can be found in depictions of the planning of the operation. However, it is difficult even in the planning stages is difficult to plan to achieve Rapid Dominance by Shock and Awe although there is access to modern military equipment and methods.

Abstract:
Flash is the unwanted or excessrubber material that presents on the outersurface of themolded rubber product. This will affect the surface finish; it is a cosmetic defect andit can be removed. It forms because of the leak or the excess molded rubber materialbetween the surface of the mold, typically on the parting line, (Jordan Anderson,2014). The presence of flash will reduce customer satisfaction. There are manymethods to remove the flash. The method is selected according to the degree of flashextension and the location where it occurs. The project aims to design a semi/full automated machine, which helps for having asmooth and fine surface finish of the weight plates. These plates are made up of rubberfor the ELEIKO group. The weight plates have different weights from 10 to 20 kg,but the diameter of each plate stays the same, but the thickness will be different foreach plate. The machine should be designed that removes all the excess rubber andshould smoothen the outer surface of the weight. The purpose of this work is to gainknowledge about different product development methods, respective tools, andtechniques that are used. The machine should be user- friendly, should not becomplicated, should not damage the workpiece (marks or trace of the blade), shouldnot put the employer in danger, and economically feasible. This report presents the progress of designing of the product, product development, methods, and literature study. The designed model can construct in the industry fortheir problem they are faced by the flash. The model is very simple and unique so thateveryone can perform the task without any previous experience. Material alternativeswere evaluated as well as manufacturing possibilities. The designed machine was theoffered for free as means for further research and development. Keywords: flashing, additive manufacturing, Ullman method, Pugh matrix, rubberweight plates, lever arm, smoothening tool.

Abstract:
As code complexity increases, maxlive increases. This is especially true in the case of the Kentucky If-Then-Else architecture proposed for Nanocontrollers. To achieve low circuit complexity, computations are decomposed to bit-level operations, thus generating large blocks of code with complex dependence structures. Additionally, the Nanocontroller architecture allows for only a small number of single bit registers and no extra memory. The assumption of an infinite number of registers made during code generation becomes a huge problem during register allocation because the small number of registers and no additional memory. The large basic blocks mean that maxlive almost always exceeds the number of registers and the traditional methods of register allocation such as instruction re-ordering and register spill/reload cannot be applied trivially. This thesis deals with finding a solution to reduce maxlive for successful register allocation using Genetic Algorithms.

Cox, Robert John. "Ullmann etherification." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25968.

Full text
Abstract:
Formation of the diaryl ether moiety remains a challenging target for organic synthesis despite modern technologies, however, better understanding of older techniques often leads to improvements. The copper-catalysed Ullmann ether synthesis, whilst attractive in many ways, is frequently problematic due to the inherent irreproducibility of the reaction on scale up. Little is yet known about the mechanism of the reaction and conflicting views are rife within the scientific community. In a well-studied example, we show that the potassium iodide formed during the reaction slows catalysis. Additionally, the deprotonation of phenol is complicated by the insolubility of the inorganic base. This results in a beneficial outcome, providing a rate enhancement and reduction of by-products, which can be further exploited to provide lower stoichiometries, improved selectivity and greater functional group tolerance. The development of an improved, more reproducible procedure in combination with reaction calorimetry has allowed the mechanism to be studied in intricate detail. Excellent agreement with a mechanistic model has led to further insight into the enigmatic aryl halide activation and provides good evidence for a single electron transfer mechanism. In addition, evidence for a dynamic catalyst resting state has been observed which adds to the complexity of the mechanism. This, in turn, leads to a fine balance of concentration and electronic effects that prove vital to the rate of reaction.

Abstract:
AbstractMotivated by proof checking, we consider the problem of efficiently establishing equivalence of propositional formulas by relaxing the completeness requirements while still providing certain guarantees. We present a quasilinear time algorithm to decide the word problem on a natural algebraic structures we call orthocomplemented bisemilattices, a subtheory of Boolean algebra. The starting point for our procedure is a variation of Aho, Hopcroft, Ullman algorithm for isomorphism of trees, which we generalize to directed acyclic graphs. We combine this algorithm with a term rewriting system we introduce to decide equivalence of terms. We prove that our rewriting system is terminating and confluent, implying the existence of a normal form. We then show that our algorithm computes this normal form in log linear (and thus sub-quadratic) time. We provide pseudocode and a minimal working implementation in Scala.

Abstract:
Much work has been done to engineer robots’ mechanical capabilities to best suit the general demands of their users and tasks. However, minimal research has addressed the impact of individual differences on perceptions of robot trustworthiness. These conclusions can provide guidance to optimize adaptive robotic systems in education, healthcare, and industry settings. This study examined the relationship between personality and human robot interaction in two contexts: (1) error-free and (2) errors. Assessment of individual differences were achieved via the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) (Davis, 1980) and robot trust assessed using the Multidimensional Measure of Trust (MDMT) (Ullman & Malle, 2018). This project provided a novel contribution in the field of human-robot interaction, highlighting the influence of technological failure on trust impressions of a social robot. Additionally, we sought to understand the degree to which empathy levels mediate these changes in trust.

A non-intrusive optical method for two-phase flow pattern identification was developed to validate flow regime maps for two-phase adiabatic flow in a small diameter tube. Empirical measurements of film thickness have been shown to provide objective identification of the dominant two-phase flow regimes, representing a significant improvement over the traditional use of exclusively visual and verbal descriptions. Use of this technique has shown the Taitel-Dukler, Ullmann-Brauner, and Wojtan et al. phenomenological flow regime mapping methodologies to be applicable, with varying accuracy, to small diameter two-phase flow.

Abstract:
Abstract Assembly retrieval is a significant technology to reuse the abundant design knowledge embedded in the products. However, the existing assembly retrieval methods are still lacking and the research on this topic is needed. It is found that the motion features of the internal mechanism in the assembly model are closely related to its mechanical function, which is significant for mechanism motion design, assembly simulation, etc. So we propose an approach for assembly matching by motion and shape features. First, assembly model are decomposed into separate kinematic components according to analyzing its motion structure. Then, we take geometric information of kinematic component as a vertex, and kinematic pair between components is taken as an edge to construct graph-based assembly descriptor, which contains motion features of the assembly. Afterwards, Ullmann algorithm is introduced to match the input descriptor with the assemblies in the library, and the maximum subgraph of them is solved so as to estimate the similarity. In case study, some experiments have been carried out, and the results have shown the feasibility of the method proposed in this paper and demonstrated the practical value in engineering.

Abstract:
Potyviruses form one of the largest and most economically important groups of plant viruses. Individual potyviruses and their isolates vary in symptom expression, host range, and ability to overcome host resistance genes. Understanding factors influencing these biological characteristics is of agricultural importance for epidemiology and deployment of resistance strategies. Cucurbit crops are subject to severe losses by several potyviruses including the highly aggressive and variable zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV). In this project we sought to investigate protein domains in ZYMV that influence systemic infection and host range. Particular emphasis was on coat protein (CP), because of known functions in both cell to cell and long distance movement, and helper component-protease (HC-Pro), which has been implicated to play a role in symptom development and long distance movement. These two genes are also essential for aphid mediated transmission, and domains that influence disease development may also influence transmissibility. The objectives of the approved BARD project were to test roles of specific domains in the CP and HC-Pro by making sequence alterations or switches between different isolates and viruses, and testing for infectivity, host range, and aphid transmissibility. These objectives were largely achieved as described below. Finally, we also initiated new research to identify host factors interacting with potyviral proteins and demonstrated interaction between the ZYMV RNA dependent RNA polymerase and host poly-(A)-binding protein (Wang et al., in press). The focus of the CP studies (MSU) was to investigate the role of the highly variable amino terminus (NT) in host range determination and systemic infection. Hybrid ZYMV infectious clones were produced by substituting the CP-NT of ZYMV with either the CP-NT from watermelon mosaic virus (overlapping, but broader host range) or tobacco etch virus (TEV) (non- overlapping host range) (Grumet et al., 2000; Ullah ct al., in prep). Although both hybrid viruses initially established systemic infection, indicating that even the non-cucurbit adapted TEV CP-NT could facilitate long distance transport in cucurbits, after approximately 4-6, the plants inoculated with the TEV-CPNT hybrid exhibited a distinct recovery of reduced symptoms, virus titer, and virus specific protection against secondary infection. These results suggest that the plant recognizes the presence of the TEV CP-NT, which has not been adapted to infection of cucurbits, and initiates defense responses. The CP-NT also appears to play a role in naturally occurring resistance conferred by the zym locus in the cucumber line 'Dina-1'. Patterns of virus accumulation indicated that expression of resistance is developmentally controlled and is due to a block in virus movement. Switches between the core and NT domains of ZYMV-NAA (does not cause veinal chlorosis on 'Dina-1'), and ZYMV-Ct (causes veinal chlorosis), indicated that the resistance response likely involves interaction with the CP-NT (Ullah and Grumet, submitted). At the Volcani Center the main thrust was to identify domains in the HC-Pro that affect symptom expression or aphid transmissibility. From the data reported in the first and second year report and in the attached publications (Peng et al. 1998; Kadouri et al. 1998; Raccah et al. 2000: it was shown that: 1. The mutation from PTK to PAK resulted in milder symptoms of the virus on squash, 2. Two mutations, PAK and ATK, resulted in total loss of helper activity, 3. It was established for the first time that the PTK domain is involved in binding of the HC-Pro to the potyvirus particle, and 4. Some of these experiments required greater amount of HC-Pro, therefore a simpler and more efficient purification method was developed based on Ni2+ resin.
