Abstract:
This paper addresses an intriguing intergenerational encounter between Micha Ullman (b. Tel Aviv 1939), one of Israel’s most prominent senior artists, and Ronen Sharabani (b. Tel Aviv 1974), a young media artist. The two artists’ otherwise divergent practices converge in their use of sand and red earth as their primary media. The paper brings Mieke Bal’s concept of migratory aesthetics and Jill Bennett’s phenomenological approach to trauma-related art to bear on Ullman’s fragile earth installations and perforated sand tables, and on Sharabani’s projections of Virtual Reality onto sand. Also addressed is Sharabani’s series Vitual Territories (2019), in which digitally manipulated views from Google Earth probe geographical sites that resonate with migratory histories. The paper traces two main trajectories upon which the oeuvres of Ullman and Sharabani interface. The first category, “treacherous sands”, relates to installations involving sand tables and other containers of soil. In turn, the category of “fragile traces” addresses installations that feature various architectural ground plans modeled in sand. In these installations, sand is the quintessential terra infirma. At the same time, however, the paper proposes that through the haptic appeal of the medium of sand, these installations counter the pervasive anxiety of shifting ground with an augmented sense of bodily presence.

Abstract:
Clahsen and Felser (CF) have written a beautiful and important paper. I applaud their integrative empirical approach, and believe that their theoretical account is largely correct, if not in some of its specific claims, at least in its broader assumptions. CF directly compare their shallow structure hypothesis (SSH) with a model that my colleagues and I have proposed for aspects of the neurocognition of first and second language: the “declarative/procedural” (DP) model. Although some of CF's discussion accurately depicts the DP model and its relation to the data, they also make a few critical errors. Here, I first summarize the DP model in both first language (L1) and adult-learned second language (L2), in order to be able to contrast it with the SSH, and then address the relevant problems in CF. For further details on the DP model and L1, see Ullman (2001a, 2001c, 2004) and Ullman et al. (1997). For the model as it applies to L2, see Ullman (2001b, 2005).

Abstract:
The Marr—Ullman model for motion detection in the human visual system functions by means of the dual input of polarity-specific edge detectors and luminance change detectors. Moulden and Begg (1986) found a polarity-specific motion aftereffect which they claimed provided support for this dual input model. The logic of their experiment is examined, and it is shown that several additional predictions arise from the Marr—Ullman model, which were not supported by Moulden and Begg's study. A more powerful experiment was carried out and these additional predictions were disconfirmed, although the polarity-specific effect did emerge. A consideration of alternative explanations of this effect led to a second experiment in which an attempt was made to discover the actual determinants of the effect. This revealed that polarity-specific units are unlikely to play any part in the phenomenon. It was concluded, in the light of this and other evidence, that one of a class of alternative models is more likely to be the actual mechanism for motion perception. However, careful consideration of the Marr—Ullman model indicated that it may be untestable in principle if various differentially weighted levels of neural integration are envisaged.

The three books reviewed in this essay, Morality Among Nations: An Evolutionary View (Mary Maxwell), Righteous Realists: Political Realism, Responsible Power, and American Culture in the Nuclear Age (Joel H. Rosenthal), and Securing Europe (Richard H. Ullman), in some sense represent a reaction to Reagan's ideological policies. Maxwell's book appeals to the sociobiological nature of international morality. Rosenthal's book invites the reader to consider the valid view of the realist model as a venue toward integration of morals with decision making in international relations. Ullman's main premise is that the disintegration of the Soviet empire and reunification of Germany gave a strong impetus for the European states to seek a common ground in all areas through cooperation, particularly on security issues.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTDual-system models suggest that English past tense morphology involves two processing routes: rule application for regular verbs and memory retrieval for irregular verbs. In second language (L2) processing research, Ullman suggested that both verb types are retrieved from memory, but more recently Clahsen and Felser and Ullman argued that past tense rule application can be automatized with experience by L2 learners. To address this controversy, we tested highly proficient Greek–English learners with naturalistic or classroom L2 exposure compared to native English speakers in a self-paced reading task involving past tense forms embedded in plausible sentences. Our results suggest that, irrespective to the type of exposure, proficient L2 learners of extended L2 exposure apply rule-based processing.

Abstract:
Cross-coupling reactions furnishing carbon–carbon (C–C) and carbon–heteroatom (C–X) bond is one of the most challenging tasks in organic syntheses. The early developed reaction protocols by Ullmann, Ullman–Goldberg, Cadiot–Chodkiewicz, Castro–Stephens, and Corey–House, utilizing elemental copper or its salts as catalyst have, for decades, attracted and inspired scientists. However, these reactions were suffering from the range of functional groups tolerated as well as severely restricted by the harsh reaction conditions often required high temperatures (150–200 °C) for extended reaction time. Enormous efforts have been paid to develop and achieve more sustainable reaction conditions by applying the microwave irradiation. The use of controlled microwave heating dramatically reduces the time required and therefore resulting in increase in the yield as well as the efficiency of the reaction. This review is mainly focuses on the recent advances and applications of copper catalyzed cross-coupling generation of carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bond under microwave technology.

Abstract:
Abstract The bulk of second language (L2) vocabulary learning happens incidentally through reading (Rott, 2007; Webb, 2008), but individual differences, such as prior knowledge, modulate the efficacy of such incidental learning. One individual difference that is strongly predicted to play a role in L2 vocabulary is declarative memory ability; however, links between these two abilities have not been explored (Hamrick, Lum, & Ullman, 2018). This study considered declarative memory in conjunction with varying degrees of prior knowledge, since declarative memory may serve a compensatory function (Ullman & Pullman, 2015). L2 Spanish learners completed measures of prior Spanish vocabulary knowledge, declarative memory ability, and incidental L2 vocabulary learning. The results suggest that better declarative memory predicts better immediate learning in general and better vocabulary retention two days later, but only for those with more prior knowledge, consistent with the Matthew Effect previously reported in the literature (Stanovich, 1986).

Abstract:
Background and aims The ‘dual-systems’ model of language acquisition has been used by Ullman et al. to explain patterns of strength and weakness in the language of higher-functioning people with autism spectrum disorder. Specifically, intact declarative/explicit learning is argued to compensate for a deficit in non-declarative/implicit procedural learning, constituting an example of the so-called see-saw effect. Ullman and Pullman extended their argument concerning a see-saw effect on language in autism spectrum disorder to cover other perceived anomalies of behaviour, including impaired acquisition of social skills. The aim of this paper is to present a critique of Ullman et al.’s claims and to propose an alternative model of links between memory systems and language in autism spectrum disorder. Main contribution We argue that a four-system model of learning, in which intact semantic and procedural memory are used to compensate for weaknesses in episodic memory and perceptual learning, can better explain patterns of language ability across the autistic spectrum. We also argue that attempts to generalise the ‘impaired implicit learning/spared declarative learning’ theory to other behaviours in autism spectrum disorder are unsustainable. Conclusions Clinically significant language impairments in autism spectrum disorder are under-researched, despite their impact on everyday functioning and quality of life. The relative paucity of research findings in this area lays it open to speculative interpretation which may be misleading. Implications More research is needed into links between memory/learning systems and language impairments across the spectrum. Improved understanding should inform therapeutic intervention and contribute to investigation of the causes of language impairment in autism spectrum disorder with potential implications for prevention.

Abstract:
A winner-take-all mechanism is a device that determines the identity and amplitude of its largest input (Feldman and Ballard 1982). Such mechanisms have been proposed for various brain functions. For example, a theory for visual velocity estimate (Grzywacz and Yuille 1989) postulates that a winner-take-all selects the strongest responding cell in the cortex's middle temporal area (MT). This theory proposes a circuitry that links the directionally selective cells in the primary visual cortex to MT cells, making them velocity selective. Generally, several velocity cells would respond, but only the winner would determine the perception. In another theory, a winner-take-all guides the spotlight of attention to the most salient image part (Koch and Ullman 1985). Also, such mechanisms improve the signal-to-noise ratios of VLSI emulations of brain functions (Lazzaro and Mead 1989). Although computer algorithms for winner-take-all mechanisms exist (Feldman and Ballard 1982; Koch and Ullman 1985), good biologically motivated models do not. A candidate for a biological mechanism is lateral (mutual) inhibition (Hartline and Ratliff 1957). In some theoretical mutual-inhibition networks, the inhibition sums linearly to the excitatory inputs and the result is passed through a threshold non linearity (Hadeler 1974). However, these networks work only if the difference between winner and losers is large (Koch and Ullman 1985). We propose an alternative network, in which the output of each element feeds back to inhibit the inputs to other elements. The action of this presynaptic inhibition is nonlinear with a possible biophysical substrate. This paper shows that the new network converges stably to a solution that both relays the winner's identity and amplitude and suppresses information on the losers with arbitrary precision. We prove these results mathematically and illustrate the effectiveness of the network and some of its variants by computer simulations.

Abstract:
A wide body of research has studied what happens when survivors disclose interpersonal violence (Ullman, 2010; Ullman & Filipas, 2001). Less studied is why survivors disclose their experiences. Although research in other disciplines has created measures to assess the reasons for disclosing other concealable identities (Derlega, Winstead, Folk-Barron, & Petronio, 2000), the present study aimed to fill a gap in the existing literature by creating a measure to assess the reasons for disclosing sexual and intimate partner violence. The Reasons for Disclosing Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Scale was created after interviewing survivors and receiving feedback on the measure from crisis center advocates and experts in the field (i.e., content validity). The psychometric properties (i.e., dimensionality and reliability) of the measure were tested with a sample of 274 adult female survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence. The results suggested that reasons for disclosing sexual and intimate partner violence can be broken down into seven factors (e.g., safety and justice, image validation), and that these reasons vary from other concealable identities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The relationship between corporate sustainability performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP) has long been debated. Ullman (1985) pointed out that the conflicting results could be influenced by many factors, such as sample size, industrial context, inconsistent measurement of CSP and CFP, research methodologies, and procedures for data collection and analysis. This paper addresses Ullman's (1985) concerns by providing a more methodologically rigorous review of the CSP-CFP relationship than prior research studies. A meta-analysis of 198 studies yields a total sample size of 31,514 observations. The meta-analytic findings suggest that sustainability performance likely increases a firm's financial performance, especially in the long run. Compared to social sustainability, environmental sustainability, to a larger extent, contributes to the positive CSP-CFP relationship. In addition, CSP appears to be more highly correlated with accounting-based measures of CFP than with market-based indicators. Multi-industry, pre-2000 studies, and non-U.S. sample firms seem to show a stronger impact on the positive relationship between CSP and CFP than other sample indicators. A final finding is that the methodology used in the analysis has a significant impact on the results.

Abstract:
Abstract In urban geography, a traditional but always important research problem has been the spatial-functional structure of towns and changes that occur in this field. Two approaches can be distinguished here: the sociological and the geographical. The former follows in the steps of the so-called Chicago school, i.e. Park, Burgess and Hoyt, and the other of Ullman and Harris. It seems, however, that those two approaches do not exhaust the range of spatial-structural studies which may be conducted in modern towns since there are areas within them endowed with specific properties that can be called their substructures. This paper will present the general characteristics of such substructures and identify factors responsible for their appearance and development. It will also propose an empirical research pattern. The term ‘substructures’ is taken to denote relatively autonomous, highly uniform wholes standing out in the spatial-functional structure of a town, distinguished on the basis of spatial relations generated by people. While structural elements of towns in the approach of the Chicago school or that of Harris and Ullman can be identified with structural regions, urban substructures show a similarity to functional regions in their organisation, structure and operation. Thus, towns with identified substructures have a polycentric spatial- functional structure, favourable in terms of both the level of service of their inhabitants and their sustainable development.

Several psychophysical experiments are described which test and uphold predictions derived from the Marr–Ullman model of movement detection. First, we demonstrate the existence of adaptation which is specific not merely to the direction of movement of an edge, but also to its contrast polarity. Second, it is shown that adaptation to a spatially homogeneous field whose luminance is modulated according to a temporal sawtooth waveform produces predictable changes in sensitivity to the movement of an edge; these changes, too, are specific to particular conjunctions of direction and edge polarity. Third, similar changes in sensitivity are demonstrated to occur when the luminance of an edge is physically perturbed at the moment of its displacement. Finally, it is shown that, as predicted, the sudden onset of an edge can itself give rise to a momentary impression of movement, the apparent direction of which depends upon the change in luminance that accompanies the onset of the edge.

Abstract:
In his landmark study of US commodity flows, Ullman explains flow as being determined by complementarity, intervening opportunity, and transferability. Of these three concepts, only complementarity can be readily tested empirically; this may be accomplished through an analysis of trade partnerships. Despite rapidly fluctuating flow volumes, results of this analysis indicate that trade partnerships are predominantly stable. Further, partnerships involving large volumes are much more stable than those involving small volumes. This provides evidence of the role of spot markets in determining the pattern of commodity flows.

After the publication of Professor Ernest Czogala Memorial Issue Part 1, I found 2 obituaries, one in the International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Vo1.9 No.1, published by the Technical University Press, Poland, by Maria Drelichowska and Lucjan Karwan of the Technical University, Silesia, Gliwice, Poland. The other was published"Fuzzy Systems in Medicine" (P.S. Szczepaniak eds.), Physica-Verlag, published in January 2000, which included my paper,"Fuzzy and Crisp Logical Rule Extraction Methods in Application to Medical Data," which I wrote in collaboration with W. Duch et al. This issue includes the final paper,"A Classifier Based on Neurofuzzy Inference," by Ernest Czogala, Jacek Leski, and Yoichi Hayashi, which is why this edition has been published later than planned. I would like include a comment by Samuel Ullman, written in Birmingham, Alabama, where Ernest's cousin and researcher James J. Buckley works: "Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind... Nobody grows old merely by years. We grow old by deserting our ideals." The Samuel Ullman Museum at the University of Alabama is at 2150 15th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35294-1150 (phone:001(205)934-5634), thanks to citizens of Japan and the United States. We thank Drs. Toshio Fukuda and Kaoru Hirota, Editors in Chief of the JACI, for accepting my proposal for this special issue. Special thanks also go to the referees for their cooperation, devotion, and review. We also thank Fuji Technology Press President Keiji Hayashi for his dedicated work.

Abstract:
This collection of essays celebrates more than four decades of international relations research by the distinguished scholar and practitioner Richard H. Ullman. The book demonstrates the dilemma faced by the organizers of a Festschrift for a prolific author with wide-ranging interests: Should the chapters focus on, and collectively do justice to, one topic alone; or should the book take a wide-ranging approach that is more representative of the broad spectrum of subjects analyzed by the honoree? The editors of this volume have some success in following both routes simultaneously, albeit with some necessary trade-offs.

Abstract:
The peroxisomal enzyme acyl-CoA oxidase is localized in the ‘dense-tubular-system-enriched fraction’, probably identical with the endoplasmic reticulum, in human blood platelets. This localization is strongly different from the localization of catalase which seems to be a cytosolic enzyme, in agreement with Marcus, Zucker-Franklin, Safir & Ullman [(1966) J. Clin. Invest. 45, 14-28]. A localization of acyl-CoA oxidase in the endoplasmic reticulum seems to be in good accordance with the important role of peroxisomes in the metabolism of prostaglandins, as recently demonstrated by Diczfalusy, Kase, Alexson & Bjørkhem [(1991) J. Clin. Invest. 88, 978-984].

Abstract:
The central limit problem for algebraic probability spaces associated with the Haagerup states on the free group with countably many generators leads to a new form of statistical independence in which the singleton condition is not satisfied. This circumstance allows us to obtain nonsymmetric distributions from the central limit theorems deduced from this notion of independence. In the particular case of the Haagerup states, the role of the Gaussian law is played by the Ullman distribution. The limit process is explicitly realized on the finite temperature Boltzmannian Fock space. The role of entangled ergodic theorems in the proof of the central limit theorems is discussed.

AbstractUsing potential theoretic methods and exploiting the connection with eigenvalues of Toeplitz matrices, we investigate the limiting behaviour of zeros of Faber polynomials generated by a Laurent series. Our results build upon fundamental work of J. L. Ullman. For example, we show that if E is a compact set with simply connected complement and connected interior whose boundary is either (i) not a piecewise analytic curve or (ii) a piecewise analytic curve but with a singularity other than an outward cusp, then the equilibrium distribution for E is a limit measure of the sequence of normalized zero counting measures for the Faber polynomials associated with E.

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights induced by positive Borel measures μ on the open unit disk. We establish the Alexander-Taylor-Ullman inequality for spaces and we characterize the cases where equality occurs. We define a class of weighted Hardy spaces via the balayage of the measure μ. We show that is equal to if and only if μ is a Carleson measure for . As an application, we obtain the reproducing kernel of when μ is an infinite sum of point-mass measures. We consider the boundary behavior and innerouter factorization of functions in . We also characterize the boundedness and compactness of composition operators on .

Abstract:
A series of keto-substituted pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinolines, pyrazolo[3,4-b][1,8]naphthyridines, benzo[e]pyrazolo[3,4-b]azepines, benzo[g]pyrazolo[3,4-b]azocines, pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyrido[3,2-g]azocines, and benzo[g]pyrazolo[3,4-b]azonines scaffolds were synthesized via a Friedel–Crafts cyclialkylation approach. The precursor acids were obtained by utilizing the modified Ullman coupling reactions of 5-chloro-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid with different aryl amines followed by ring closures in the presence of AlCl3/CH3NO2 or P2O5 or polyphosphoric acid catalysts. Particular attention is given to the novel structures especially in regard to the promising pharmaceutical and therapeutic values associated with their skeletons.
