Full textThe aim of this study was to develop and characterize a new generation of wear and corrosion resistant multilayers Cr-N based coatings. Due to the severe conditions that wood cutting tools are subjected in addition to the environmental issue associated with the use of cutting fluids during wood machining, the monolayers that constitute our multilayers system must have specific characteristics. As a result, thin layers of Cr, CrN and CrAlN have been deposited on wood cutting tools steel and silicon substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering to be optimized. Then, the optimal monolayerscoatings were combined to develop the Cr/CrN/CrAlN multilayers. that were characterized to determine their physicochemical, mechanical, tribological properties and their corrosion behavior. The results obtained indicated that the application of a multilayer coating can greatly improve the wear and corrosion resistance of a wood cutting tools steel

Full textAlumina ceramic is one of the most widely used in industry due to its properties. However, some properties, such as low fracture toughness, limit its range of structural applications. In order to improve this property has been studied several ways to control the microstructure of these ceramics, seeking a refined and homogeneous microstructure. The firing curve control to manipulate the microstructure during sintering is a way that has been studied and has advantages such as simplicity and economy. This work studied the two-step sintering of alumina ultrafine powders using steps at a low temperature sintering and the two-steps sintering proposed by Chen and Wang. With the help of statistical analysis was determined the variables that most influence in sintering processes studied. After sintering, the samples were characterized by apparent density and grain size. It was observed that the use of two-step sintering is effective in controlling the final microstructure of alumina, altering both the densification and grain growth.
A alumina é uma das cerâmicas mais utilizadas na indústria, devido a suas propriedades. Entretanto, algumas propriedades, tal como a baixa tenacidade à fratura, limita sua gama de aplicações estruturais. Com o intuito melhorar essa propriedade vem sendo estudadas várias maneiras de se controlar a microestrutura dessas cerâmicas, buscando uma microestrutura homogênea e refinada. O controle da curva de queima para manipular a microestrutura durante a sinterização é uma maneira que vem sendo estudada e apresenta vantagens como simplicidade e economia. Neste trabalho foi estudada a sinterização em duas etapas de pós ultrafinos de alumina utilizando tanto patamares a baixa temperatura quanto a sinterização em duas etapas proposta por Chen e Wang. Com o auxílio da análise estatística de Planejamento de Experimentos determinou-se as variáveis que exercem maior influência nesses processos de sinterização, sempre visando atingir microestruturas com altas densidades e mínino crescimento de grãos. Após sinterização, as amostras foram caracterizadas por medidas de densidade aparente e de tamanho de grão. Observou-se que a utilização da sinterização em duas-etapas é eficiente em controlar a microestrutura final da alumina, alterando tanto a densificação quanto o crescimento de grão.

Resumo: A pele dos peixes constitui-se na primeira barreira protetora entre o meio interno do animal e o ambiente; essa proteção se faz através de mecanismos de regulação iônica, hídrica e de defesa contra microrganismos do ambiente. Neste trabalho, estudou-se a morfologia do tegumento de duas espécies de peixes de couro da família Pimelodidae, coletados nos rios da bacia do rio Paraguai-MS: Hemisorubim platyrhinchus (jurupoca) e Pimelodus macu/atus (manch). Foram comparados os tipos celulares da epiderme e também a disposição das fibras colágenas da derme compacta das regiões dorsal e ventral. A análise dos resultados veio mostrar que a pele desses dois peixes possui um padrão estrutmal comum, apresentando, no entanto, pequenas variações relacionadas principalmente com os hábitos do animal. Utilizando-se técnicas histoquimicas que demonstram mucosubstâncias neutras e ácidas, detectou-se nas células mucosas da epiderme a presença de carboidratos neutros nas duas espécies e carboidratos ácidos apenas na jurupoca Nas células claviformes da jurupoca e do mandi pôde-se observar a presença de moderada quantidade de proteínas revelada pela reação da ninhidrina-Schiff. Com o método do Picrosirius hematoxilina acoplado à observação pela microscopia de polarização, foi possível mostrar o arranjo e a orientação das fibras colágenas da derme compacta. Medindo-se a espessura da epiderme e da derme dos dois peixes, constatou-se que a jurupoca apresenta a epiderme das regiões dorsal e ventral mais espessa se comparada àquela do mandi; o mesmo ocorre com a derme dorsal. No que se refere à derme ventral, o mandi é a espécie com maior espessura. Os dados obtidos, em relação à derme, mostram que a pele desses peixes poderia ser utilizada na confecção de artefatos de couro, uma vez que a disposição e a espessura de suas fibras colágenas conferem à mesma, resistência e maciez comparáveis às do couro de outros animais
Abstract: The skin of fish constitutes the first protective barrier between the interna! medium of the animal and the environment; it protects against ionic and hydric imbalance and works as a defense mechanism against microoganisms ITom environment. At the present, we studied the morphology of the tegument of two Pimelodidae skin fish collected ITom rivers of the basin of Paraguai River - MS: Hemisorubim platyrhinchus - 'jurupoca" and Pimelodus maculatus "mandi". The cellular types of the epidermis as well as the disposition of the collagen fibres ofthe compact dermis ofthe dorsal and ventral regions were compared. The analysis of the results showed that the skin of the two fishes has a common structural pattern, displaying, however, small variations related mainly to the habitat and behaviour of the animais. By using histochemical techniques which display neutral and acid mucous substances, neutral carbohydrates were seen in the mucous cells of the epidermis in both species and acid carbohydrates have only been seen in 'jurupoca". In the club cells of "jurupoca"and "mandi, a moderate amount of proteins were seen, which was disclosed through a Schiff-ninhidrine reation. By using the Picrosirius-hematoxylyn method coupled with polarization microscopy, it was possible to display the settling and orientation of the collagen fibers of the compact dermis. By measuring the thickness of epidermis and dermis of both fish, we observed that the epidermis ofthe dorsal and ventral regions of'jurupoca" was thicker than that of "mandi"; the same was observed for dorsal dermis. Regarding the ventral dermis, "mandi"is the species that has the greatest thickness. In conclusion, the present work sugest that the skin of both fishes-jurupoca and mandi- can be used to manufacture skin goods, since the settling and thickness oftheir collagen fibers provide the same endurance and softness ofthe skin taken from other animals

Full textThis dissertation is devoted to superhard materials (Chap. 2-4). These are mainly carbides (WC), nitrides (TiN), borides (TiB2) and oxides (HP phase of SiO2). Hard materials hâve many industrial applications wherever résistance to abrasion and wear are important. Nevertheless, only two materials possess a hardness value larger than 40 GPa, namely diamond (96 GPa) and cubic boron nitride (60 GPa). However, these two materials are difficult to synthesize. Moreover, they exhibit various drawbacks in use. Nano-indentation is the most recent technique for measuring the hardness. Tradi-tional tests are given in appendix A. The first chapter of this thesis is a contribution to the theory of indentation. Up to date, this contact problem between two solids, associated to the names of Boussinesq and Hertz, is only partially resolved (see appendix B). Usually, the two materials in contact are assumed to be isotropic; this is never the case. In addition, anharmonicity or nonlinear effects, i. E. , the variations of mechanical coefficients due to the applied load, are never taken into account. Moreover, the indented sample undergoes. Structural transformations which are omitted in most cases. In order to take into account these various effects, we combined the independent works of Stroh, Willis, Barnett, Farnell, Thurston and Brugger, Landau and others. We restricted our study to the elastic range. Osmium is not hard but it is less compressible than diamond. The investigation of its polymorphs is reported in chapter 2. A schematic phase diagram is suggested. It can be useful for future theoretical or experimental studies. As for titanium, the high pressure phase of osmium (omega) is expected to be hard
