Watts, Stella. "Plant-flower visitor interactions in the Sacred Valley of Peru." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2008. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/3000/.

Full text
Abstract:
The structural organisation of species-rich plant-pollinator networks is important to understanding their ecology and evolution and is essential for making informed conservation and restoration decisions. This thesis reports on a study located at different altitudes in nine tributary valleys of the Sacred Valley, Vilcanota Highlands, Peru. The assemblages of flower visitors were described and the plant-flower visitor matrices were analysed and compared to those found from other montane systems. Additionally, the thesis also addressed how the European honeybee (Apis mellifera) fits into these communities. Previous studies have predicted that abundance, diversity, and importance of hymenopterans as pollinators decrease with increasing altitude, where they are replaced by Lepidoptera and Diptera. Contrary to other temperate montane areas, Hymenoptera were more diverse at higher elevations. Diptera was the most abundant functional group overall but did not significantly increase in abundance with altitude as predicted. Species richness of visited plants reached a maximum at the highest altitudes. Using ordination analysis, hummingbirds, honeybees, flies and beetles were identified as major functional groups of flower visitors with significantly different visitation profiles. Nestedness analysis revealed that the plant-flower visitor networks had a similar structure to other published networks, consisting of core groups of generalist plants and animals which interacted with one another and with specialised flower visitors and plants, respectively. The core species varied in identity between valleys, but were usually the species in greatest abundance, implying that the networks were abundance structured. In addition, 85% of the interactions were observed only in single valleys. This context specificity may have implications for the conservation of plant-pollinator interactions in the Sacred Valley. Comparisons of the pollinator efficiencies of honeybees, hummingbirds, native bees and moths to Duranta mandonii (Verbenaceae) demonstrated significant variation among flower visitors in rates of visitation, pollen removal ability and contribution to fruit set. This variation was not correlated: hummingbirds were by far the most frequent visitors but removed virtually no pollen and did not contribute to fruit set. Despite the taxonomic diversity of flower visitors, the main pollinators were large native bumblebees and honeybees. Results highlighted the importance of measuring efficiency components when documenting plant-pollinator interactions, and also demonstrated that visitation rates may give little insight into the relative importance of flower visitors. Overall, the study showed that Apis was the most generalist flower visitor and a dominant core species within networks. However, although Apis visited a relatively large proportion of the flora compared to native taxa, they only intensively utilised a small proportion of available plant species. No evidence was found from the surveys to suggest that honeybees used interference competition and displaced other species. It was suggested that because specialised rare species are frequently dependent on a core of generalist taxa honeybees may play an important role for the possibilities of rare species to persist. However, perhaps the greatest threat to biodiversity and the persistence of plant-flower visitor communities in the Sacred Valley is from the destruction and fragmentation of habitats and from facilitative interactions between native and alien plants, mediated through visitation from honeybees

Ferriter, Meghan M. "Changing the game? : gender, ethnicity, and age in mediated professional sport." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3000/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the research is to analyze the ways in which the cultural meanings of professional sport associated with gender, ethnicity, and age are changing in the U.K. and the U.S. in the context of international social processes. This study contributes to the examination of mediated sport, and therefore, wider sporting and social processes, in several ways. It assesses mediated sport discourses as reproducing existing power relations as arranged around the social categories of gender and ethnicity. It acknowledges hegemonic masculinity remains as a useful concept for understanding the construction of gender, specifically within mediated sport. Elements of hegemonic, and therefore subordinate, masculinity are demonstrating nuanced changes. Discourses relating to media coverage of large-scale sporting events further emphasize the divisions and are implicated as resources for difference making between individuals and groups based on ethnic, ‘racialized,’ and national identities. Finally, this study offers an initial exploration of mediated sport and age. Here mediated sport discourses build a system of values and definitions related to cultural understandings of the body, social interaction, and behavioural convention; this establishes what the researcher has termed an ‘age complex’ derived from mediated sport discourses.

Bensalem, Rafik. "Wind driven natural ventilation in courtyard and atrium-type buildings." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1991. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3000/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the effectiveness of wind-driven natural ventilation in courtyard and atrium-type buildings, particularly in the context of ventilative cooling. Courtyard and atrium buildings are currently enjoying great popularity. Perhaps a primary reason for their revival comes from the energy and environmental awareness of the current period, in which courtyard and atrium concepts are emerging as very promising. Wind-driven ventilation is one of the most basic and probably among the most efficient ways to prevent overheating, and provide cooling in the summer season, especially in humid climates. A review of previous works showed that little attention has been given to the wind-driven natural ventilation capability of these structures, and to the means of maximizing this ventilation. This study was thus aimed to fill part of the gap in this subject. In order to evaluate the wind-driven ventilation effectiveness of these structures, and to examine some of the influential parameters, experimental wind tunnel tests were made. Actual indoor air flows were measured in small replica models of four-storey courtyard and atrium buildings by means of small calibrated orifice plates. A parametric study of the geometry of the courtyard was made in isolation conditions, where the depth and breadth of the courtyard were systematically varied. Several atrium ventilation modes were tested both in isolation and in urban terrains. The tests involved different roof geometries and various roof porosities. The measurements were followed by a discussion on the validity of simple computational methods to predict airflow in atria. The investigation portrayed the importance of some factors, such as the wind orientation rather than the courtyard geometry, for enhancing the flow in these structures. The superiority of some atrium designs over the courtyard types, particularly in sheltered sites, was underlined. The study concluded with a discussion of design guide-lines and referred the reader to an application as an example, describing a simple step-by-step method to estimate the cooling benefits of these structures in a particular site, and making use of the measurement data obtained from the study.

Bena, Jan. "Essays on the interaction between financial development and real economy." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2009. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3000/.

Full text
Abstract:
Economists disagree about the role of the financial sector in economic growth. My thesis contributes to this discussion. I show that better financial systems do promote productivity growth and that limited access to external finance interacts with product market competition in determining corporate investment. The first chapter "The Effect of Financial Development on Corporate Growth in the EU Single Market" compares within-industry growth rates of similar EU 'single-market' firms facing financial systems of different depth and institutional quality as of 'single-market' inception. Moving from the least to the most developed financial market within the EU boosts firms' annual value-added growth by about three percentage points. Our results also suggest that the growth gap due to initially under-developed financial systems wais closed by 2003. In the second chapter "Which Firms Benefit More from Financial Development." we test whether more developed financial systems foster corporate growth through tackling market frictions proxied by firm size and age. Our main finding is that more developed financial systems are able to overcome the relative opaqueness of younger firms. We also find that freshly incorporated firms in less financially developed countries have unusually high shares of equity capital in total assets. The two chapters provide evidence that limited access to external finance affects corporate structures and hinders economic growth. In the last chapter "The Effect of Credit Rationing on the Shape of the Competition-Innovation Relationship" I study how financial constraints affect innovation activity. The novel theoretical results derive from an analysis of the interaction between the incentive effect of competition on innovation and the effect competition has on the degree of credit rationing. I find that the negative effect of financial constraints on firm- and aggregate-level R&D investment is most pronounced at both high and low levels of competition. These predictions are supported by empirical evidence.

The practical part of the thesis is an intimate and inner parent album, which is based on illustration of spoken word. It replaces the ordinary photo album, which is for a long time a social necessity of every young mother. During interviews with close friends of the author were created drawings that captures photographically „uncapturable“. They expressively displays completely new experience, which the mother has to go through for the very first time - mood swings, strange tastes, childbirth, but also the moment of conception. Work replaces the mentioned photo album and was formed as a family heirloom. Therefore, considerable attention has been paid to the external processing of the album.

Abstract:
Purpose: Compaction is one of the fundamental pillars of construction, without a proper compaction of ground material deformation may occur shorty after completed construction. A flaw of the traditional method of compaction control is that only point sources are obtained. This means that you can easily miss weak points of the compaction. This becomes significant when dealing with compaction of larger areas. The purpose of this study is to investigate how digital technology can ensure the compaction quality compared to traditional methods, and to expand the company’s knowledge of the application of the compaction computer MCA-3000. Method: The method chosen to gather data for this study were literature study, case study and interviews. Findings: The findings show how the compaction computer can be used to ensure compaction quality. An important factor is to know the conditions of the ground material in order to ensure a credible result. The case study suggest that the compaction computer can be used to visually show the compaction quality of an area. However, I cannot be used as a separated method to ensure compaction quality. The compaction computer needs test surfaces to be calibrated with assistance of traditional methods. This means that it cannot replace the traditional method. However, it can be used as a complementary tool to support the traditional methods. In the interviews, both the respondents pointed out that the compaction computer cannot be used as a separate method but can be used as a complementary tool for the contractors.  Implications: Our conclusions are as followed: ·         The compaction computer cannot be used as a single method to ensure compaction quality. ·         The compaction computer implies that it can be used as a complementary tool to support the traditional methods to ensure compaction quality of lager areas.  ·         The compaction computer allows the user to detect faults in real time during the compaction prosses. Our results indicate that the compaction computer can be uses as a complementary tool to support the traditional methods but not as its own method. To ensure the reliability of the compaction computer MCA-3000 further studies needs to be conducted to see how it preform with different ground material condition.  Limitations: Our result was limited by access of data. We were only able to collet data from a single project in a relatively small area, this means we only were able to get three data sources of compaction quality conducted with a tradition method. Another limitation was that the entire area had the same ground condition which means the result is only applicable in our case.

McLeod, Clay. "The noble path of socially-engaged pedagogy: connecting teaching and learning with personal and societal well-being." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3000.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an articulation of how the principles of socially-engaged Buddhism, a spiritual practice rooted in the teachings of the historical Buddha that integrates Buddhist practice and social activism, can enrich and enhance contemporary educational practice. It discusses Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, ontology, psychology, ethics, and practice and relates these things to holistic education, critical pedagogy, SEL, and global education. On the basis of the theoretical understanding represented by that discussion, it articulates several theoretical principles that can be practically applied to the practice of teaching and learning to make it resonate with the theory and approach of sociallyengaged Buddhism. In integrating the implications of Buddhist teachings and practices with teaching and learning practice, it draws from bell hooks’ notion of “engaged pedagogy” in order to articulate a transformational, liberatory, and progressive approach to teaching called “socially-engaged pedagogy.” Socially-engaged pedagogy represents the notion that teaching and learning can be a practical site for progressive social action designed to address the real problem of suffering, both in the present and in the future, as it manifests in the world, exemplified by stress, illness, violence, war, discrimination, oppression, exploitation, poverty, marginalization, and ecological degradation.

Abstract:
Chapter of Repair, Replacement Activities (RRA) in Fitness-For-Service (FFS) Code of the Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) includes rules of article RB-3000 for temporary repair techniques in the use of covering leakage during operation of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Temporary repair techniques are RB-3010 Plating, RB-3020 Adhesion and RB-3030 Infill. In this paper, rules of these temporary repair techniques are summarized as well as the meaning of ‘temporary’, intention and benefit of them. On the other hand, these rules of temporary repair techniques were provided by Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering Society (TENPES) at first in 1986, about thirty years ago. “Plant Operation and Maintenance Standards (POMS) Plan” developed by Japan Power Engineering and Inspection Corporation (JAPEIC) in 1996 incorporated those rules of temporary repair techniques, then JSME FFS Code has taken over them from POMS. Because the design rules of these temporary repair techniques have had much margin since origin, it may result in excessive design, or time-consuming procurement of parts. Especially, since these temporary repair techniques are often applied to the leakage around valve gland and flange, simpler and more practical modified rules could provide more benefit for effective repair activities. In this paper, an orientation of possible revision is described on temporary repair techniques rules in JSME FFS Code.

Abstract:
This paper details the development and implementation of an adventure game based assignment exploring the use of ciphers as part of a final year undergraduate data communications course. Students were presented with a document that contained a narrative to help them along the journey to the solution, one section of which required decipherment of a key instruction. The author reflects on the (pre-internet) development, student reactions and the difficulties that may be faced in the use of this type of assignment and upon his perception of the potential impact of changes in educational environments upon the use of ‘non standard’ themes for assignment work. The paper also considers some of the opportunities afforded by the Web for the development of contemporary assignments based upon the approach outlined here.
