Full textGiven the emerging importance of people as a contributor to business success, HR function has reorganized itself to deliver more value in efficient way. the business partner model is not unique to HR as all staff functions are trying to find ways to deliver more value to either top-line growth and to bottom-line profitability. However, currently are missing studies that shows impact of the emerging blueprint in an holistic way. With a longitudinal study we analyse the efficiency and effectiveness of the new model on the wider organization and on HR people and this is particularly interesting in moment where several organisation and functions are focusing attention on this blueprint. Using the most recent suggestions on research design are analysed longitudinally HR unit of 42 countries of multinational financial services firm, before, during and after the HR transformation. Outcomes shows that new blueprint implementation is linked to cost reduction and increase the delivery of value, but some issues pop up in terms of perception of internal mobility, that actually is not linked to the implementation of the new model. Using a multi methodology, model is tested in order to understand impact of the new blueprint and its implication for theory and practitioners.

Full textTissue engineering is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary field that aims at the developmentof biological substitutes that restore, mantain, or improve tissue function. Concerning the articular cartilage many improvments were made, but the complete tissue restoration approach still lacking. In the first part of this work, it was evaluated the ability of a gelatin scaffold to promote the condrogenic differentiation of ADSCs. Successively, in order to obtain a low cost sistem, a based alginate/Cobalt scaffold was designed with the aim to take advantage of the physical features of the cartilage tissue. Finally, it was developted a cost effective method to produce microfluidic chips with the aim to obtain micro-systems for cell encapsulation.

Full textOver the last few years there has been an extensive debate on the use of evaluation of research in universities and research facilities. As part of this debate, in this thesis, we analyze the most important methods for the assessment of research on an international level, the main qualitative tools for the evaluation of research, in particular the peer review, and quantitative tools, such as bibliometrics, and the characteristics of the main bibliographic archives (eg, Scopus, Web of Science), deepening the main indicators used in human and social sciences (eg H Index). In addition, the thesis is connected with the socio-economic impact of research and the main problems of this innovative tool, through a case study conducted in the United Kingdom. A subsequent empirical analysis covers the main lists of journals at international and national levels, in the scientific field of History and Philosophy of Science. The results of the studies show that the lists of international journals can be, a starting point which must necessarily be joined by other instruments of assessment (peer review, citation analysis, etc.), while the national lists, however, can’t be an instrument, which is in some cases inadequate in order to a proper evaluation of the research, due to the low internationalization of repertoires and judgments generally too high attributed to the journals. A further result is that the evaluation of research in different scientific disciplines shows that in the humanities and social sciences there is a low presence of scientific publications in major international citation and bibliographic databases (Web of Science, Scopus). This situation limits the reliability of the statistical analysis based on indices and quantitative indicators (first Impact Factor and Index H), to evaluate the scientific productivity of a researcher or an institution research.

Full textThe research aims to study the way art history and visual culture are utilised in the medical humanities, and to suggest a more profitable approach compared to the usual ones. The text is organised in two parts. In Part I, we examine the main purposes of medical humanities’ theories and practices. In particular, we focus on narrative medicine and on the techniques by which art history has been included in most of their programmes. Then, we propose to review these methods in order to improve the role of a historical and visual thought inside these teachings. In Part II, we consider a series of paintings of the Dutch Golden Age representing the love melancholy, or lovesickness, in view of what shown up in the first part. We connect these images with medico-philosophical treatises of that time, setting the disease in its historical context; then we examine the interpretations some scholars and art historians suggested about them. Above all, we consider the pioneering study by Henry Meige, appeared in the “Nouvelle Iconographie de la Salpêtrière” (1899), that demonstrates the possibility of a critical comparison with the “icono-diagnosis” approach used by Charcot and Richer, and, obviously, with the first works of psychoanalysis.

Full textHuman Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (hMSC) are currently tested in several clinical trials. In spite of hMSC efficacy is frequently linked to their ability to reach the affected site, little is known on their migratory behavior and the underlying mechanism. This study was designed to investigate the migratory behavior of hMSC and to test the involvement of Akt, also known as protein kinase B. Akt protein expression and phosphorylation was investigated in hMSC western blotting analysis. Cell migration was assessed by transwell, wound healing and time lapse in vivo motility assays. MSC results fairly migratory and Akt was strongly activated at basal level. Furthermore, the characterization of the major regulatory proteins and effectors, upstream and downstream of Akt, has led to the conclusion that the cascade of reactions of this signaling pathway in hMSC follows a canonical pathway. Pharmacological inhibitors were used to determine the potential mechanism responsible for cell migration and invasion. Blocking PI3K/Akt pathway resulted in decreased hMSC migration. The use of pharmacological inhibitors specific for individual Akt isoforms allowed us to discriminate the different role of Akt1 and Akt2 in the migration of the hMSC. Through our analysis, we demonstrated that pharmacological inactivation of Akt2, but not that of Akt1, significantly decreased cell migration and invasion. Although these results are not fully comprehensive for the understanding of the phenomenon, in the complex indicate that the activation of Akt2 plays a critical role in allowing the migration of the hMSC. The demonstration that the Akt2 isoform is required for the chemotaxis of direct hMSC, makes this kinase a potential pharmacological target to modulate the migration of such cells.

Full textBackground. Adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASC) represent an interesting tool for cell therapy, due to their tissue derivation that is abundant and easily available. Using Lipogems, a medical device, stem cells isolation is performed only with mild mechanical forces, giving a minimally manipulated and ready to use fat product. To date, the differentiation processes in vitro are mostly obtained using chemical compounds. Anyway, other factors are shown to be modulators in cell physiology, as physical stimuli and some natural molecules. For instance, electromagnetic waves induced the expression of differentiation markers in stem cell models and adult cells were reprogrammed after treatment, while Zebrafish embryo derived extracts were shown to be antiproliferative both in vitro and in vivo. Methods. The search for new differentiation strategies was focused both on physical waves and Zebrafish extracts, using hASC isolated with Lipogems as cell model. Acoustic waves were gave using two types of transducer, the mechanical wave generator and the Cell Exciter. Zebrafish extracts treatments were performed using different doses and experimental times. Gene expression analysis of stemness and differentiation genes was conducted in both the experimental approaches using quantitative relative RT-PCR and/or qPCR. Proliferation assay was also performed for treatments with natural compounds. Results and conclusions. Control cell culture data meta-analysis revealed that hASC has a stable gene expression in basal conditions. Acoustic waves induced gene expression changes in hASC, in particular in cardiovascular commitment genes, suggesting a regulatory role in differentiation processes. Two of the Zebrafish extracts are shown to inhibit hASC proliferation, with statistical significance after 72 hours from the treatment. Gene espression analysis suggested that this effect could share the same molecular mechanism with differentiation events.

Full textThe purpose of the thesis is to provide an in-depth understanding of some strategic resources that allow organizational survival and improvement. The thesis is divided into three papers and the fil rouge is the use of experimental design as research methodology. Recognizing creativity as a strategic competence and a measure of individual or team performance, the first paper compares the effect of three leadership styles – transformational, transactional and laissez-faire – on individual creativity, thus showing which leadership behavior is the most suitable for enhancing it. Positive and negative moods are included in the research design as mediators and individual intrinsic motivation is included as moderator. The second paper is an extension of the first one and investigates the same relationships at a team level of analysis. Furthermore, not only leaders are relevant for the organizations, but followers too. Talents are the life-bloods of organizations and their behaviours have to be detected for attracting them, but also for retaining and managing them. The third paper untangles the job seekers’ behaviors in looking for a job and choosing a company rather than another one basing their choice on the screening of social media and social network pages.

Full textThe aim of this work concerns the relation between human rights and natural rights, in order to understand if human rights are those natural rights affirmed in the modern age. First of all, we analyse the contemporary conceptions about human rights nature, especially those which find their meaning from ontological positions. Secondly, we reconstruct the term of this comparison from three perspectives : the idea of natural rights, the concept of natural rights, the theories of natural rights. At last, after the individuation of relevants aspects between both categories, we compare them, highlighting the common points and the differences that separate their path

Full textThe dissertation is the outcome of a research lead according to a method of “knowledge integration” (namely compounding the legal, criminological and political-philosophical fields), which has dealt mainly with “social capital” and “human development”: two highly thought-provoking concepts, widely studied by social sciences. After having pinpointed some parallels thereof in principles of the Italian Constitution (mainly to be found in the art. 3), a set of relevant decisions of the Constitutional Court applying them in criminal cases have been considered. Some hints and proposals are finally advanced in order to improve, aptly through this sort of “constitutional reading” of “social capital” and “human development”, the meaning and possible development of essential conceptual schemes well established in the criminal law.
