The collection of umbilical cord blood (UCB), a source of clinically-useful stem cells, has become a highly strategised process known as ‘banking’, with 160 banks globally. State-funded public banks rely on unremunerated donations of UCB from women. STS scholarship has explored the broader ethical and economic tensions of such banks and the private enterprises offering banking for a family’s exclusive future use of their own donated tissue. Less focus has been given to public banks’ institutional practices and strategic concerns. I address this gap by adopting an archival lens popularised by J

In addition to the naive state of immune cells, the action of immuno-suppressive cells such as regulatory T cells (Treg) may contribute to the positive aspects observed in CB transplants. Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD) remains one of the main complications after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Due to their ability to suppress effector cells, CD4+CD25highFoxp3high regulatory T (Treg) cells have been proposed as a cellular therapy to prevent GvHD. However it has been shown that Treg cells can inhibit natural killer (NK) cell functions. NK cells are key effectors of the Graft versus Leukaemia (GvL) effect post-transplant; therefore, it is plausible that a Treg cell therapy may impact on NK cell function and differentiation from haematopoietic stem cells (HSC). Abstract:
Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) used for allogeneic transplantation. Ex vivo expansion of HSPC can improve the slow platelet and neutrophil engraftment associated with UCB transplants. HSPCs reside in niches, some of which are near the endosteal bone surface, where they can associate with immature osteoblasts. Interestingly, osteoblasts can enhance the growth of HSPC in culture and their platelet engraftment activity. Using a proteomics approach, I identified 47 differentially expressed proteins between mesenchymal stem cells and immatur

Abstract:
Human tissue banks are a potential source of cellular material for the emerging cellbased therapy industry; umbilical cord tissue (UCT) private banking is increasing in such facilities as a source of mesenchymal stem cells for future therapeutic use. However, early handling of UCT is relatively uncontrolled due to the clinical demands of the birth environment and subsequent transport logistics. It is therefore necessary to develop extraction methods that are robust to real world operating conditions, rather than idealised operation. This will be critical for all processes using primary tissue o
