Abstract This paper recounts the encounter that occurred between the Anglican missionaries of the Universities Mission to Central Africa (umca) and the local Mang’anja people at Magomero, in Southern Malawi in 1861. It situates the encounter in the context of slave trade and local conflicts, and war between the Mang’anja and the Yao people in which the missionaries themselves were embroiled. The paper argues that, centred on the differences in perceptions, interpretations of issues that related to land, culture and religious worldviews, the encounter entailed some acts of resistance by the loc

Aging is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and there is no effective therapeutic approach to alleviate this condition. NF-κB and TNF-α have been implicated in the activation of the aging process, but the signaling molecules responsible for the inactivation of NF-κB and TNF-α remain unknown. Exosomes have been reported to improve heart functions by releasing miRNA. Recent studies suggest that lncRNAs are more tissue-specific and developmental stage-specific compared to miRNA. However, the role of lncRNA in exosome-mediated cardiac repair has not been explored. In the present study, we f

Experiments showed that bacterial biofilms are heterogeneous, for example, the density, the diffusion coefficient, and mechanical properties of the biofilm are different along the biofilm thickness. In this paper, we establish a multi-layer composite model to describe the biofilm mechanical inhomogeneity based on unified multiple-component cellular automaton (UMCCA) model. By using our model, we develop finite element simulation procedure for biofilm tension experiment. The failure limit and biofilm extension displacement obtained from our model agree well with experimental measurements. This

Abstract Introduction: Head and neck cancer squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are diverse and complex with inter-tumor and intra-tumor heterogeneity and discrepancies in therapy response regardless of the clinical stage. Tumors are thought to be heterogeneous at the single-cell level involving cancer stem cells. Therefore, cancer diagnosis and treatment are difficult because single cells might have intrinsic functional and genetic heterogeneity. Single cell transcriptome is used for mapping the genetic heterogeneity of a tumor. Currently, no model is available to provide a genotype to phenotype

MicroRNA-21 (miR-21), a proto-oncogene, may facilitate the development or maintenance of drug resistance in cancer cells. Restoring drug sensitivity can improve therapeutic strategies, a possibility that requires functional evaluation and mechanistic exploration. For miR-21 detection, matched tissue samples from 30 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients and 8 head and neck cancer (HNC) cell lines were obtained.
