Abstract:
Bio-physical signal measurement tools embedded in clothing are becoming a viable alternative in mobile health monitoring systems, particularly Wearable Electronic Textile-based Systems (WETS). To assure clinical viability, utilizing flexible and inconspicuous conductive media that can acquire and transmit reliable signals while assuring signal durability and biocompatibility are particularly important when developing WETS for medical applications. To accomplish this task, conductive threads are emerging as an appropriate electrical medium for health monitoring garments. However, little has been studied on the behavior of these conductive threads under various conditions. We report here the electrical conductive properties of specific conductive threads under two conditions: (i) as sewn configurations onto a textile substrate with different stitch types and (ii) as independent strands under controlled extension independent from a sewing machine. Statistical results showed that the stitch class and thread location significantly influenced the electrical resistance of the conductive thread, revealing the chain stitch to provide resistance even lower than the un-stitched conductive thread. In addition, under controlled extension all three of the conductive threads exhibited both a hysteresis and a stress-relaxation effect. These are important phenomena to examine when conductive threads are incorporated into WETS because the choice of stitch type will influence the strength of the signals received and transmitted, while the wearers’ body movements will cause the threads to encounter multi-axial stretch. Knowing the influence of stitch type, stretch, and relaxation on conductive thread resistance will inform objective design and manufacturing decisions for developing clinical-grade textile-based electrical circuits for medical applications.

Abstract:
The guiding thread of this paper is that the problem of Latin American philosophy must be considered as a problem of metaphilosophy, i. e. a reflection on the conditions of the practice of philosophy in Latin American countries. The author claims that such practice has been dominated by two models, the model of modernization, and the model of authenticity. In his view, these models do not respond any more to the reality of philosophy in the region. He therefore proposes a new model, the dialogical, as a way to critically build philosophical traditions and communities in Latin American.

In a recent updating world moves related to automation and its improvements but only thread to pause to its electricity. Because it could not be automated and its need to be generated by using different way of methods. In that the Electricity is one the greatest demands that keeps increasing day by day. To feed its supply the necessity of improved power generation techniques is in need. Combustion of coal is one of the traditional methods of producing electricity in developing countries like India. So, it is necessary to have a good optimized boiler to generate power in thermal power plants. The coal fed in should be completely utilized for combustion as the coal is imported at a high rate. But the amount of un-burnt carbon found in the bottom ash slips down the efficiency of a boiler. Here we are going to analyses the causes for more number of un-burnt in bottom ash and methodology to reduce it thereby the efficiency of the boiler gets increased.

Abstract:
Background: The objective was to compare the difference between removing vicryl suture thread after skin healing or burry the knots and leaving it to be absorbed in situ, after subcuticular skin closure of Pfannesteil incisions. Methods: Prospective, randomized controlled trial included 449 eligible participants were prospectively recruited between July 2016 and June 2017. All selected patients had a pfannenstial incision with subcuticular skin closure using 2-0 absorbable vicryl stiches (for primary caesarean section or extra peritoneal surgical approach to the prostate, bladder and distal ureters). The left side knot was buried under the skin edge and a knot in the midline and the right edge was made. After 10 days postoperative, the right half of the stitch thread and the two knots were removed, and the left half of the thread was left in situ. Patients were observed for any complication at time of stitch removal, after one month and after 6 months' post-operative.Results: Wound infection rate, hypertrophic scars, keloids and skin itching were significantly higher in the un-removed wound sides while skin dehiscence was significantly higher in the removed wound sides. Conclusions: Leaving behind absorbable suture material after wound healing -when used in subcuticular pfannenstial skin closure- is associated with increased rates of wound infection, hypertrophic scars, itching and keloids, which of course overweight any known benefits of the technique.

Kehler, Nicole. "Coordinating Humanitarian Assistance: A Comparative Analysis of Three Cases." Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9938.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years the United Nations (UN) has sought to coordinate its numerous agencies and other humanitarian relief actors during responses to natural disasters and complex emergencies. Its success in this endeavor has been mixed. Through an analysis of three different humanitarian relief operations-the Rwanda genocide in 1994, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's intervention in Kosovo in 1999, and the floods of 2000 in Mozambique-this paper describes more fully the conditions under which coordination efforts occur. Specifically, this essay argues that successful and effective coordination in each particular crisis depends on the extent to which certain capacity and contextual conditions were present. In addition, it suggests that the often-touted "coordination by command" approach, a top-down style of coordination, should not be assumed by the UN since, as the literature suggests, this notion is quite contentious among nongovernmental organizations and United Nations staff alike. This paper critiques the utility of pursuing this model and offers instead an alternative vision of a pragmatic facilitation role for UN agencies in humanitarian relief operations

Gutierrez, Moreno Cédric. "Three essays on the behavioral foundations of entrepreneurial entry." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017SACLH003.

Full text
Abstract:
Explaining why individuals enter into entrepreneurship has been challenging. In this thesis, I take a behavioral perspective and analyze the effects on entrepreneurial entry of behavioral mechanisms that have been understudied in the entrepreneurship literature. The first essay proposes to disentangle the effects on market entry of two mechanisms that may have been confounded: overconfidence and attitude toward ambiguity. This essay highlights the critical role of ambiguity attitude on the decision to enter a market, particularly when the result depends on one’s skills, such as entry into entrepreneurship. The very nature of entrepreneurship is to invest capital and time with the hope of receiving future financial benefits. I therefore argue that understanding entrepreneurs’ temporal preferences for time and money can provide new insights on the determinants of entry into entrepreneurship. While intertemporal choice involving money has been studied extensively in the behavioral literature, very few studies have analyzed the way people discount time, despite the fact that it is a scarce and valuable resource. The second essay investigates this issue in a laboratory experiment. Finally, using a lab-in-the-field experiment, the third essay analyzes temporal preferences for money and time of a comparable sample of future entrepreneurs and future managers

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is part of the ANR project, Génétic EquipemeNt for biothrEat enviroNmental Analysis and SurveillancE (GENEASE). This project is essentially part of the axis "crisis management" since it focuses on the study of a mobile and portable equipment for the biological detection and identification. Our task i to develop a system that detects (or not) the presence of the species and to estimate its concentration. This estimation is based on fluorescence data using the number of the reference cycle (or break time). It is therefore to integrate into the same approach to the discrimination detect and the régression to qualify. In addition, the aim is to build a statistical model which from the single observation of the fluorescence of a drop, calculates an estimatation of the reference cycle and deduce an estimation of the concentration of the species to qualify while minimizing the delay at the detection. The work is to present a statistical model to determine continuous time fror the moment we observe this reference cycle on the fluorescence

Abstract:

Toulouse, ISAE, 2009. https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01942421.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Fortuny (1983) by Pere Gimferrer is the only novel (at least to date) that the author has written in Catalan and it represents one of the most unique novels of contemporary Hispanic narrative. The aims of the present study are mainly two: to shed light on one of the most important, but least studied, works by Pere Gimferrer, the greatest representative of Hispanic creativity for the Post-War Generation, and to analyse critical reception of the work and show how the novel has evolved from the time of publication in 1983 until today. This essay consists of three major parts: the study of critical reception, the narratological analysis of the text and the unveiling of the textual, but above all visual, references that make up the novel. The latter allows us to explain two essential elements of the novel: the imaginary Fortuny on the one hand and, on the other, the novel’s intertextual concrete figure of speech, its ekphrasis. The study of this intentionally visual character of the novel not only wanted to highlight the importance of two arts to which Gimferrer has always paid special attention – we refer to cinema and painting – but has also demonstrated the desire of the writer to innovate the Catalan narrative scene, using different literary devices to push the limits of the genre novel.

Abstract:
Abstract: A tour through the production of Le Corbusier shows the insistent presence of the square as a basis of compositions in various fields (urban planning, architecture, painting, furniture...) and in different formats (in floor, elevation and profile, or as a theme, module and grid). This communication makes a formal analysis (graphic and symbolic) of its projects and works tracing the different ways to use the square that remains as a recurring constant. We can do it through four thematic areas descending in scale and dimensions: 1) capitols, 2) museums, 3) pavilions and 4) houses, studying a series of examples in each area based on the drawings of the Foundation Le Corbusier, generating speeches that reconstruct a thread of the time in the evolution of the compositional process. In correspondence with the four themes of study, we can discovery the employment of the square as different instruments. First: the square as the perimeter of the public space where to insert the representative architectures. Second: as a frame or safety deposit box where to enclose treasures artistic (or Holy). Third: as a cubic volume open and detachable. Fourth: as box defined by the grid of the structure. The square is always a means and not an end. In addition, there is an attempt to suggest some of the origins in his classic formation, his travels and his paintings. Palabras clave: Le Corbusier, composición, cuadrícula, cuadrado, cuadro, cubo. Abstract:
Abstract: Exhibitions, museums, pavilions, artist ateliers, apartments and collectors’ villas: exposition runs like a red thread through Le Corbusier’s work. Man’s relationship to art is a fundamental element of architectural dispositifs. Art influences his vision of society as a whole, and museums are central to his major urban plans, from the ziggurat of the Musée Mondial in Geneva, to the museums in Ahmadabad, Tokyo or Chandigarh, to projects he realized in the late 1960s, such as the Museum of the 20th Century in Nanterre. The evolution of museum design between 1929 and 1965 and of the concepts Le Corbusier developed for the different exhibitions of his own œuvre are in keeping with his way of understanding the relationship to works of art, whether by the artist, a knowledgeable public or those encountering art for the first time. The sketches for the different museums and pavilions retrace this evolution. Karel Teige’s critique of the Mundaneum project assumes a key role in the transformation of the museum concept that occurred between the Musée Mondial of 1929 and Le Corbusier’s first designs for a Museum with Unlimited Growth in 1930. The architecture and the place for art in society are no longer determined by the use of a form but through a functional mechanism. Growth is understood as an image of the positive evolution of mankind. This seminal change is a key to the later projects.Mots clés: musée, exposition, fonctionnalisme. Abstract:
Abstract: The projects for the Sainte-Baume and Cap Martin take up the thread of several previous investigations by Le Corbusier about the medium density housing built from load-bearing walls, as they are the Maisons Loucheur (1929), the Maisons Murodins (1940), the Maisons pour Maîtres et Contremaîtres of the SPA (1940) and the Unites Transitoires (1944). However, one can say that in them lies a new search that has to do with the association of these residential units in favour of forming a coherent and unified whole, analysing the implications that those create with the landscape. At the same time that Le Corbusier makes a reflexion on metrics and optimize the distribution of these premises, he continues to work intensively with section in order to try to find the appropriate way to reach the ground and to relate both to the natural environment on which the building rests, as well as with the distant landscape. In parallel to this work appears a search that delves into the need for a consistent material definition according to it. From these premises he establishes a dialogue that gathers several bands reflections on form and proportion, about materiality and constructive syntax, as well as the understanding of a desired relationship between man and nature.Palabras clave: Le Corbusier; paisaje; búsqueda; Cap Martin; Roq et Rob; Sainte-Baume.Keywords: Le Corbusier; landscape; search; Cap Martin; Roq et Rob; Sainte-Baume.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/LC2015.2015.586

Abstract:
ROSEN have developed together with MACAW Engineering Ltd. a Risk Assessment Tool that can be applied to both piggable and un-piggable pipelines. The Risk Model is structured to answer three basic questions relating to pipeline integrity: • What threats are active on the pipeline? • Will the active threats result in a leak or a rupture? • What is the company liability (cost) in the event of a failure? The risk assessment criteria on which the model is based are taken from codes and technical papers that have become accepted as industry norms. The Risk Model itself is semi-quantitative and is based on input data that operators should have for all pipelines. The results of the risk assessment provide an objective identification of active threats to pipeline integrity and a first level benchmarking of the operators procedures with regards to industry best practice. The paper will present the fast and robust Risk Assessment Approach and illustrate it’s application by different examples as it was used to identify and prioritize active threats mechanism to optimize maintenance expenditures for effective preservation of pipeline integrity.

Abstract:
<p>In this study, meso-scale (mm-cm scale) modelling approach is adopted to simulate the behaviour of plain concrete beam under 3-point bending. At meso-level, concrete is assumed as either a two- phase or a three-phase composite material (mortar, aggregate and/or interfacial transition zone- ITZ). In this tudy, first the aggregates are generated and placed in the concrete domain with prescribed randomness. The remaining space in the concrete domain is then filled with mortar. However, in three phase model, ITZ of finite thickness surrounding the aggregates is assumed to exist. In this study, three geometrically similar beam specimens with and without notch have been considered. The simulated load-crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) is then validated with the corresponding experimental data. A convergence study of peak load with different specimens in terms of randomness in aggregates generation and placement has been studied.</p>

The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, countries agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. The WHO would be the centralized body for all countries facing a health threat, with the power to declare a “public health emergency of international concern,” issue recommendations, and work with countries to tackle a crisis. Although, with the sudden and rapid spread of COVID-19 in the world, many countries varied in implementing the WHO guidelines and health recommendations. While some countries followed the WHO guidelines, others imposed travel restrictions against the WHO’s recommendations. Some refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, states agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. Some states refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
