Abstract:
The two best-selling books in the US before the Civil War were Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Awful Disclosures of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery. On the surface, these two could not be more unalike. Stowe’s work dramatized the moral arguments of abolitionism, changing hearts and minds about slavery, while Monk’s book offered sensational anti-Catholicism. Yet the two works were stories of their age, each focusing primarily on female sexual purity, marriage, and the family. Abolition and anticonvent literature shocked readers with descriptions of rape, torn-apart marriages, and mother–child separations. Depictions of the “erotic South” and “priests’ brothels for women” (convents) contrasted with the era’s vision of “true womanhood,” companionate marriage, and happy homes. This chapter explores how abolitionists and convent opponents advanced their movements by presenting slavery and convents as a threat to womanhood and the family, revealing how these domestic ideals shaped some of the era’s most significant moments.

Abstract:
`So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!' These words, said to have been uttered by Abraham Lincoln, signal the celebrity of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The first American novel to become an international best-seller, Stowe's novel charts the progress from slavery to freedom of fugitives who escape the chains of American chattel slavery, and of a martyr who transcends all earthly ties. At the middle of the nineteenth-century, the names of its characters - Little Eva, Topsy, Uncle Tom - were renowned. A hundred years later, `Uncle Tom' still had meaning, but, to Blacks everywhere it had become a curse. This edition firmly locates Uncle Tom's Cabin within the context of African-American writing, the issues of race and the role of women. Its appendices include the most important contemporary African-American literary responses to the glorification of Uncle Tom's Christian resignation as well as excerpts from popular slave narratives, quoted by Stowe in her justification of the dramatization of slavery, Key to Uncles Tom's Cabin.

Abstract:
No novel since Uncle Tom’s Cabin achieved the celebrity and cultural impact of To Kill a Mockingbird in regards to race in America. The chapter explores Lee’s youthful experiments in writing and gender-bending, and discusses how her first unpublished novel, Go Set a Watchman, approached themes both repressed and continued in Mockingbird. Using ideas from Queer Theory, the chapter argues that Lee’s racial liberalism is less comforting when read through the lens of her gender-bending children and closeted narrator, showing how the plots about Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are finally brought together. Analysis of Lee’s college writings expose her early interest in satirizing Southern racial politics, while biographical information from those years supports hypotheses about her queering of sexual norms.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 is devoted to the film-related activities of southern literary figures. From nineteenth-century writers including Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe (not a southerner by birth, but, as author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a huge influence on southern literary history) to modern figures like Thomas Dixon, William Faulkner, Lillian Hellman, and the Nashville Agrarians, the southern literary tradition made myriad contributions to film. Faulkner’s screenwriting work provides perhaps the most engaging example. Meanwhile, the efforts of African American writers to make similar contributions were limited by the hard facts of Jim Crow, leaving such important figures as Richard Wright and Langston Hughes, among many others, to generate their own opportunities, often abroad, in a far more uneven fashion. Black film critics like Lester A. Walton also emerged as important literary figures.
