Abstract:
This thesis examines the Mauritian music and dance form known as sega and its performance of embodied creolisation through rhythm. It argues that sega's Afro-diasporic form encodes a performative history of sacred African presence in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean. This history can be traced to an Indo-oceanic maritime history of contact, trade and settlement that incorporated Mauritius within a regional network comprising East Africa and the wider Indian Ocean. I explore sega's origins in sacred rituals performed by slaves and argue that sega's contemporary secular performance perpetuate sacr

This endorsement, coupled with the number and variety of studies that have examined movement and its impact on music learning, reflects the importance music educators and researchers have placed on movement's pedagogical possibilities. If movement is important in achieving rhythmic competency then it follows that students who participate in dance should possess rhythmic skills that equal or exceed those of music stude

The practice of music composition often stems from a small idea or motif that blossoms into a complete work through careful application of repetition, variation and a dash of inspiration. In the highly rhythmic and repetitive strain of music that is electronic dance, this motif is the fundamental building block known as the loop, and is accorded greater importance than any other style. While other genres can depend upon long-established rules governing things like harmonic structure and form, many dance tracks do not stray far from its fundamental central theme in the traditional sense. This Masters thesis is an attempt to analyse the significance of rhythm in electronic dance music. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether rhythm can create meaning within electronic dance music, and to analyse its effect on the structure of the genre. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part we will define the theories of music semiotics with regard to the structuralist approach and the traditional approach of CH. S. Peirce. We will describe the ways rhythm can operate and define what the term electronic dance music means. In the second part we will analyze r
