Full textThe thesis project was performed at Scania Industrial Maintenance. Historically, the intervals of the preventive maintenance for the production equipment have been determined based on calendar dates. As the calendar date does not take the actual use of the production equipment into account the maintenance is not adapted to this use. This could lead to either too much or too little maintenance is being performed in relation to the use of the equipment. When too much maintenance is performed, work and replacement of spare parts are performed when not needed which brings unnecessary costs for the company. At the same time, too little maintenance will instead lead to breakdowns when the machines are planned to be used, which could be very costly for the company. Because of this, Scania now wishes to proceed to determine the intervals for the preventive maintenance based on the production volume. The objective of the work was to develop methods and processes that describe how Scania's factories in Södertälje, within the framework of the Future Powertrain Program (FPP), will transition to a maintenance interval based on volume. These methods shall then be tested in two pilots, one pilot at Scania's axle and gearbox assembly and the other pilot at Scania's engine processing. To increase the project group's knowledge of subjects covered by the project, literature studies were carried out on reports, articles and in fact books. Literature studies were also performed during the course of the work on subjects that were not covered by the work's initial literature study. In addition to the literature study, a document study was also performed on the company's internal documents and included, among other things, the preparation process and instructions for Maximo, which is the maintenance system used at Scania. The project group also conducted interviews with staff at Scania IM and Scania during the work as the project members wanted to gain insight into the business and the existing ways of work. By delimiting the work, the focus has been on realizing the theory on a smaller area to investigate whether this transition is possible to implement. The selected pilot areas located at DT and DM were studied with regards to both organization and production equipment. These studies, together with the project groups literature study and document study, were then used when developing the methods. The methods developed within the project were tested in pilots on selected areas and equipment. The pilots that were carried out within the project were successful and the aim for Scania now is not to return to calendar-based maintenance but instead expand the use of themethods developed by this project. The result of this work is that a more accurate maintenance will be performed in relation to the calendar-based maintenance. The project group could also state that the safety in the workshops could be increased when applying the project's developed methods. This is because the maintenance performed on e.g. emergency stops or other safety functions are performed in relation to the use of the equipment. The methods developed within the project takes into account whether the equipment is covered by warranty or regulatory requirements. They also take into account the length of the PM and whether the PM includes routes, operator maintenance, periodic exchanges or security. These factors decides which measures needs to be taken on the calendar-controlled and volume-based PM, which results in an adapted and improved PM plan.

Full textImagine a machine for cargo transportation. On this machine, there is a sensor. This thesis examines the possibility of using machine learning as a method for predictive maintenance based on data from such sensors. The methodology is split into two parts. In the first part a binary classifier is trained on sensor data from normal machine function. Subsequently it is possible to classify new sensor data as normal or as anomalous. Three different classifiers are implemented. The second part is dedicated to test the classifiers in relation to predictive maintenance by simulating machine fault. All classifiers exhibits results which are in favor of its use in predictive maintenance based on the given sensor data.

Full textMetals are an important part of the modern society. Boliden Minerals AB is a major player in the mining industry and is active in Sweden, Finland, Norway and on Ireland. In a complex industry with varying working conditions and hazardous environments for those who work in the mines, safety is a cornerstone. Automation and maintenance are important factors for increased safety, productivity and reliability. In order to extract minerals from rock, drilling and blasting is an important part of the process. Mining includes surface and underground mining, and in this work the drilling process for underground mining has been studied. Boliden plans to introduce autonomous drilling for drifting, as part of their mining automation projects. As a first step in increasing the production and utilization of the machines, they want to perform autonomous drilling during lunch breaks and shift changes. The purpose of the work was to enable autonomous drilling by improving the reliability of drilling rigs from a maintenance perspective. The aim was to identify the faults on the drilling rig and propose measures to reduce the operational disturbances. Based on documentation and interviews, mapping has been made on the errors that occur on the drilling rigs, the procedures for supervision and maintenance, and which alarms the drilling rig’s control system can provide. The mapping of errors that occur was first made with overall categories, then studied at the level of detail for the areas that accounts for most of the errors. Based on collected data, interviews and observations, suggestions have been made for how the reliability can be increased on the drilling rigs. In line with previous studies, the result showed that the areas that account for most of the faults are hoses, with about 30 % of the failures, followed by feeder, rock drill and steering system. In the studie, these errors accounted for 80-90% of total errors. There are many reasons why the error occurs. Some of the biggest contribution factors are the environment in which the machines work, human handling, vibrations and wear and tear. In addition to the documented errors, operators perform various operating and maintenance measures on the machines. It includes filling oil and changing drill bits when they are worn out. The operating disturbances account for about 6% of the time when the drilling machine is in use. The reliability can be increased in areas where most of the errors arise by taking different actions. Hose breaks can be reduced by protecting the hoses in exposed areas and having a more throughout preventive maintenance. Other measures are to ensure proper maintenance, that the right conditions are provided and to enable monitoring of the drilling rig when there is no operator in place. In order to enable autonomous drilling in the future, it is important that operators get the right training so that they learn how to handle the system and understand the gain of using it. Furthermore, there are many areas for further development before the machines can drill completely autonomously and many of these areas represent a major challenge due to its complexity. Throughout this journey, it is also important to have a human-centered approach and a high level of security.

Full textIn today's industries, high demands are placed on having reliable production to create profitability and competitiveness. In order to achieve reliable production, it is fundamental to have a well-functioning maintenance organization. There are several different strategies and working methods for maintenance in which we have chosen to present a literature study focusing on the two maintenance strategies Reliability-centered Maintenance (RCM) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), both of which have some links to Lean Maintenance. RCM is a maintenance method with the aim of minimizing maintenance costs through optimization and improvement of the measures taken for maintenance of systems. TPM have focus on involving the entire organization in the maintenance work to improve the reliability and efficiency of machines in the production. Lean is a well-known principle of production, primarily aimed at minimizing various types of waste in a company and increasing the overall efficiency. To gain an insight into whether, and if so how, different maintenance strategies and methods are applied in practice, a field study has been conducted. The starting point of the field study has been interviews with maintenance officers in two manufacturing companies, Cementa AB in Slite, where they produce cement and Mondelez International in Upplands Väsby, producing chocolate. At Mondelez's factory in Upplands Väsby, work is mainly done with preventive maintenance and largely applies TPM by involving the entire production organization in the maintenance work. The maintenance work also uses methods that can be connected to RCM and Lean. At Cementa Slite, the majority of maintenance is corrective, but they put great importance into having well-functioning preventive maintenance. A maintenance strategy and philosophy has been created based on RCM and Lean, but also influences from TPM. In comparison with the theory and practice, there are several similarities in the maintenance work of the studied companies. The main conclusion that can be drawn from this work is that companies generally do not implement a single maintenance strategy, but they create a wellfunctioning maintenance organization by applying appropriate methods from different maintenance strategies.

Full textLegacy systems today manages many critical business processes of many organisations and banks. These systems are expensive to maintain and update with new features. Legacy systems is also difficult to adapt to a SOA (Service Oriented Architecture). Therefore, the companies want to begin phasing out these systems. SOA is an approach in how to structure a system. Everything should be built of services that are not depending on each other and therefore in the future will be easy to replace, update or delete. Since no services will be dependent on any other, you can change one without harming another. More and more companies today want to move to a SOA, therefore they are looking for ways to migrate their legacy systems to modern platforms. There are several ways to migrate legacy systems. Every way has different advantages and disadvantages. One of the safer methods is called Chicken Little, but it takes longer than, for example using the method Cold Turkey. Several companies have also specialized in automatically translating old code to a modern programming language, this technique is called transcoding. There are companies that are working to get Cobol to work with more modern languages such as Java. One of the bigger companies that is developing ways to combine COBOL and Java is Micro Focus. They have developed a library that allows you to start COBOL programs from Java. To avoid legacy systems in the future, several maintenance models have been created. Maintenance models are structured in different ways, but all have the goal to avoid future legacy systems.

Full textA company can use different strategies when performing maintenance. One strategy is corrective maintenance where maintenance is carried out after a failure has occurred. Another strategy is preventive maintenance. A combination of the two is often used. The preventive maintenance can be predetermined or condition based. Advantages with the condition based maintenance are e.g. that the replacement of parts can be planned according to observations indicating there’s an increasing risk of failure. When choosing preventive maintenance, the RCM method can be used to determine risk of failure modes and the cause of function failures. Decisions regarding the preventive maintenance should be based on knowledge in new techniques, history of failures and the equipment and competence available. Volvo Cars in Skövde is doing more or less the same preventive maintenance on machine tools regardless of whether it’s a new or old machine. The company is using condition based maintenance on some of the components and units. Mostly it consists of human inspections, a subjective control of the machine’s condition, and spindle vibration analysis. Through interviews it has been determined that new techniques are rarely implemented and that the decided maintenance plan for a machine is rarely changed. The company is aware of the development of new techniques for condition based maintenance and wants to investigate whether it is appropriate to evolve their condition based maintenance on machine tools. The techniques further investigated are measurement with Ball bar, monitoring of process parameters and geometrical verification. To make accurate decisions regarding the implementation of new techniques, a data collection of the history of frequent failures was done. To limit the amount of data a five year old processing line was studied. Data from the maintenance system Maximo was sorted by long failures from the recent years and by prioritizing with the Pareto principle it showed the recurring failures of ball screws. The component do have a condition based maintenance activity today, there is an inspection once a year. However, the inspection is rarely able to predict or find a failure on the ball screw. Four out of twenty-seven ball screws with fault have been changed after inspection over the last five years. By mapping the components failures on fifteen machine tools and when preventive maintenance has been done, several options for improvements were found. The cost of the replacement of a ball screw when a failure has already occurred is as much as ten times the cost of replacement before failure. This is caused by cost of scrap and long down time. A new, improved preventive maintenance task is therefore highly justified. The motif is both reducing the scrap cost related to failure and with increased availability. The company is recommended an investment in Ball bar as a new method for condition based maintenance. It should be used to increase the objective control of the mechanical parts of a machine tool. The method is not totally new for the company and relatively easy to implement. The current subjective control on the machine tools should be revised to increase the probability of finding degradation of functions. Today the activity takes rather long time and has therefore not been done in time, it should be shorter. The company is also recommended to investigate new methods for preventive maintenance continually. Today there is no employee with that mission and to evolve maintenance, the company has to be updated on new techniques.

Full textThe pursuit for a greater competitiveness has brought changes in modern production, where there is an ongoing transition from labour-dependent production to an increased automation in production plants. The increase of automation and the advance of technology has meant that production equipment has become more sophisticated and complicated to maintain. The changes have brought greater demands on the dependability of production equipment in order to meet customer requirements and also maintain competitiveness. The execution of an effective maintenance has become an important factor in order to achieve a dependable production plant. Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant works with both operator and specialist maintenance, where measurement on equipment are carried out and preventive maintenance plan has been developed. On the other hand, the empty-packaging-supplying system, which supplies empty cargo carriers to the packaging machines and to the cold storage warehouse, lacks a maintenance plan and therefore only emergency maintenance work are applied. The purpose of this study has been to develop a preventive maintenance plan for the empty-packaging-supplying system of rolltainers. This has taken alongside an interference analysis where interferences were mapped and then a proposal for action was devised. All data was obtained in Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant, where the methods that were used are observations, interviews, workshops and document studies. Literature studies, that treats basic maintenance principles and Total Productive Management, TPM, where also performed in order to provide a theoretical basis for the study. The analysis covers a compilation of interferences, through a Pareto chart, where those interferences which affected the supplying system most could be identified. The analysis showed that 49,3 percent of all the interferences was due to rolltainers that got stuck on curves and defective rolltainers that went through controls and caused a stop of the supplying system. An analysis was also made of the current maintenance work and how the lack of a maintenance plan affects the supplying system. Based on the analysis, a proposal for action was devised for the two most prevalent interferences and a preventive maintenance plan for the supplying system was developed. With the help of literature studies, maintenance staffs competencies and the suppliers maintenance guide, a preventive maintenance plan was developed, where great emphasis was put on to not introduce an alien working method. Since the whole production works with RIS-boards and the personnel are familiar with them, it was viewed as a suitable working method. The maintenance plan consists of scorecards, RIS-cards, with instructions for each area, and will also serve as a checklist for the maintenance work to take place at the right time. In order for the maintenance work to be fulfilled a delegation of responsibility for the maintenance work has been made. The RIS-boards enables error reports to be made in a proper way, delegate responsibility and enables documentations of performed reparations. Furthermore, Arla Foods Jönköping is recommended to integrate the newly developed maintenance plan with SAP, which is an enterprise resource planning software, which the maintenance department is currently working with to perform preventive maintenance on the packaging machines. Also, an implementation of TPM should be applied throughout the whole organization, where the newly developed maintenance plan is considered to be a basis for achieving interference-free production through a structured approach and create a commitment in the organization to work together for continuous improvement efforts. In the long term, consideration should be given to reconstruct the rolltainer tracks and create more direct transportation tracks to avoid curves and the interferences they create.

Full textAbstract
This report describes our ten week long thesis work which is the last task in our education in mechanical engineering at Linköpings University. The project has been performed at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB’s service department. The company which is located in Finspång produces, sells and provides service for steam and gas turbines around the world.
The purpose of this project is to help Siemens develop their maintenance programs for two of the auxiliary systems which are a part of the complete steam turbine system. These are lube and control oil systems.
The project is restricted to two of Siemens maintenance products, No Stop Check (NSC) and the annual Safety Inspection (SI). Some parts of the major and limited overhauls have also been investigated.
During the work different maintenance concepts have been investigated and evaluated. Focus has been centered on finding possible solutions that allow maintenance work while the steam turbine system is running. The economical consequences are enormous if the turbine has to be shut down. This due to today’s expanded capacity of the plants.
Many discussions and interviews have taken place during the project. Information has also been obtained from documents, literature and the Internet. A Failure Mode and Effect Criticality Analysis (FMECA) has also been input for the task, especially while maintenance measures and concepts were discussed.
The present maintenance that Siemens supplies are mostly based on time and experience. We have tried to implement a more condition based maintenance. A lot of time has therefore been spent finding methods for reliable measuring of the machinery condition.
The work has generated a lot of different recommendations for the future maintenance. These are more or less condition based and tailor-made for Siemens steam turbine systems. We hope that these propositions will be used in the future maintenance work and also to give some new ideas on how to develop the condition based maintenance at Siemens.

Full textThis MSc project develops a method that combines factors that affect the investment and maintenance costs in electrical power systems with costs associated with outage. This gives the system planner an opportunity to compare different alternatives for investments to receive a low total cost. Using system reliability analysis the outage time for the load points in the system can be decided. If the expected outage time is associated with a cost, it is possible to calculate the expected outage cost for the system. The purpose of the simulations has been to examine if it is possible to minimize the total cost by doing randomized investments on power lines in the system. The simulations are carried out on a fictional, small system. Because of the specific design, it is easy to analyze results but also complex enough to show problems that can occur in the system. The simulations show that the model is robust and the expected results were accomplished. The simulations also showed that, even for a large amount of events, the time for the simulation is short. This shows that the model is suitable also for larger systems.

Full textThe railroad has made it possible for housing and work at various locations, by rail lanes, and the interest in rail freight transport is increasing. To maintain good status on the railroad, a lot of money is needed, while its availability affects many people. This makes it even more important with a robust railway facility, with high availability and good punctuality for both passenger and freight trains. Better planned maintenance enables longer useful life for all components of the railway facility. As part of the plant do railway S&C cause the highest cost in a track superstructure, with crossings as the most frequent component changes. Today, the useful life of fixed manganese crossings is too low, about 100 MBrt, since the expectancy is between 100 -500 MBrt. This is the basis for the work, where the purpose is to investigate how the preventive maintenance of fixed crossings in S&C can be better planned, performed and followed up to extend its useful life. Furthermore, the aim of the thesis work is to determine, through a current situation analysis, which includes current experiences, proposals for improved working methods and tomorrow's information gathering, which information will be required to better plan maintenance, and to determine which maintenance measures are necessary for the preventive maintenance of fixed crossings in S&C. Based on this, a maintenance plan with associated LCC is designed for fixed crossings in S&C. Furthermore, all maintenance measures in the maintenance plan must be planned at least 3 months in advance, and it is desirable that the maintenance plan should extend 36 months ahead. Initially, a zero-position analysis is performed, and work continues with suggestions for improved working methods. Both in terms of how and when maintenance is carried out on fixed crossings today outside in the railway facility. Finally, a maintenance plan is presented with intervals and the resources required for the maintenance actions to be performed. These actions include change of crossing, grinding in, grinding, welding, track direction/padding, shimming guardrail, changing of corkrubber and ballast cleaning. Compliance with the maintenance plan is a life cycle cost calculation, LCC, comparing work according to zero-position and work according to maintenance plan. The results from the work show that all entrepreneurs believe that lack of time in the track is a strong contributing factor to changing fixed crossings. This, along with proper preventive maintenance measures such as grinding in and preventive grinding to maintain profile, as well as verify track position and action when needed are not done. In addition, the contractor does not perform any follow-up on performed maintenance work, maintenance decisions are based largely on safety and maintenance inspections. This means that they work most correctively, with the action of inspection note. However, for exchange audit and systematic gear maintenance, experience, good local knowledge and good knowledge of the plant is the most important source of information for the entrepreneur today. The infrastructure owner also performs a certain delivery follow-up, but not sufficiently to ensure that they get what is ordered. Registration of all preventive maintenance measures should improve and simplify the infrastructure owner's follow-up. In addition, to enable more strategic maintenance planning, condition-based maintenance methods are required, with a view to gaining a better perception of degradation of the profile of a fixed manganese crossing. In addition, automatic machine measurements are required, which makes measurements reproducible and measurement data can be trend. Finally, the inadequate reporting of preventive maintenance measures in combination with the contractor's secrecy of exact maintenance costs, results in the maintenance cost for crossings not being reported at an aggregated and individual level.

Full textAugmented reality (AR) is when the virtual is mixed with the real, AR is used in for example mobile games and the military. The development of AR-applications has been simplified during recent years, which has opened possibilities for new applications of the AR-technology. The purpose of our work is to research whether instructions given via AR leads to the users making fewer errors when performing industrial maintenance. We chose to compare AR-instructions to paper manuals since this is the most commonly used instruction medium today. Companies have shown interest in the development of AR-solutions for industrial maintenance in their day-to-day operations. Particularly since it can potentially lead to decreased downtime and help new or inexperienced operators. Today there exists several aids and programming libraries that has simplified the development of AR-applications, which opens for more possibilities when it comes to the areas of application for AR. To examine if AR-instructions leads to fewer errors made by the users, we have developed an AR-application for mobile phones. In our experiment we compare the AR-application with a paper manual on a custom-built maintenance task. Our results show that the users with the AR-application perform just over 60% fewer errors. To verify the usability of the application we conducted a usability test, the results from this test puts our application one point below the acceptable limit.

Full textThis paper is written as a thesis at Mälardalens University in Västerås at the academy of Innovation, Design and Engineering. The aim of this thesis is to deepen our knowledge in the concept “Deferred Maintenance”, how it is handled, and to find out the extent to which it is used in. Advantages and disadvantages with the deferred maintenance will be illustrated with the use of this type of maintenance. The work has been performed in several steps. The first step was to find out what the deferred maintenance is about. Afterwards it was a lot of literature and information collection about the subject. The processing of the collected information was the next step. As a result, we have illustrated an example of what to consider by the development of deferred maintenance. The main benefits were time and cost savings. We even found some of the disadvantages. One if the deferred maintenance not handled correctly. Or even faulty software products can also lead to problems with the use of deferred maintenance.

Full textThe purpose of this essay has been on the one hand, to identify what problemsthere have been within corrective maintenance for amphibious vessel systemsup till now. The second purpose has been to identify the possibilities availablefor improving the corrective maintenance. The essay has answered thefollowing two questions at issue:1. What problems have there been within corrective maintenance foramphibious vessel systems up till now?2. What future possibilities are available for improving the correctivemaintenance? The questions at issue in this essay have been answered by using a systemstheoreticaland qualitative case study as a method. The technique of gatheringempirical material has been in the way of survey interviews. The first question at issue in the essay can be summarised as follows:There have been problems, in as much as; there has never been a study into therequirements of maintenance. Consequently, this has resulted in scarcity oftools and spare parts at various resource levels and also insufficient training fortechnicians. Furthermore, there is a deficiency within the flow ofcommunication and information. These constrain the possibility of quicklyobtaining decision support and technical systems support. Documentation andso called expert support systems also show deficiencies. Subsequently, theseimply difficulties when training and when implementing repair measures. Finally, deficiencies are apparent in routines, searching, inventory andreplenishment of spare parts. The consequences are time-delays and that thewrong types of spare parts are replaced. The second question at issue in the essay can be summarised as follows:The defence of the future will provide opportunities for an improved flow ofinformation. This will result in technicians receiving decision support andtechnical support systems easier. This will reduce the constraints, among otherthings, which were experienced when choosing methods of repair and orderingof resources. In the future, there will be an opportunity to utilise centraldatabases, which will result in an improved accessibility and use of updateddocumentation. Moreover, an overview and more efficient use of tools andspare parts will be possible. Combining databases and networks will also beenhanced in the future. This can then lead to better surveillance of the runningof the vessel and its state of condition.FÖRSVARSHÖGSKOLAN C-UPPSATS Beteckning 19100:2007Mj Peter Fagrell, ChP 01- 03 2003-07-21 sida 2(50)Finally, there is believed to be the possibility of built- in tests, reference andcontrol systems in the vessels. Full textThis master thesis reviews advances in detection and diagnosis of static friction (stiction) in control valves. Control valves suffering from stiction results in oscillating control loops which in turn decreases both the process stability and reliability. Perstorp AB sees a necessity to automatically detect stiction in valves before the effects of the malfunctioning valves have become too severe. This thesis presents an introduction to maintenance, control loops and how stiction in valves can affect performance of control loops.
A selection of methods presented in the literature are introduced and examined using normal operating data from the site in Perstorp. Common for all selected methods is their intuitive ideas and that they are based on normal operating data and minimum amount of process knowledge. For the adaptive segmentation method a further development is presented where among other things a test quantity is proposed.
This thesis shows that none of the selected methods can reliably diagnose stiction in control valves from normal operating data. Noise in process value and irregular disturbances results in weakened trend characteristics.
Finally, the thesis has tested a root cause analysis of plant-wide oscillating control loops found on two plants in Perstorp AB.

Full textPlanned property maintenance should be done in a strategic and thoughtful manner. If this is not done, it usually happens that the maintenance work is done unstructured with dissatisfied tenants as a result. The focus in this thesis is planned maintenance of housing and in particular the maintenance of apartments, which most affect the tenants. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute with increased knowledge of how housing companies work with strategic maintenance that directly affect customers' accommodation. The issues studied are how municipal actors work on internal maintenance and customer options, and how it affects profitability and customer satisfaction in companies? The work has been limited to include only municipal housing companies, with a minimum of 700 apartments in the stock, in the degree project. The only geographical demarcation that has been made is that the study is conducted within Sweden's borders, the housing companies surveyed are thus scattered throughout the country. The various housing maintenance strategies have effects that affect different parts of a housing company. Depending on whether a property owner or tenant determines when a maintenance is to be done, companies can more or less control the planning and, consequently, the cost of maintenance. Either the economies of scale may be lost and maintenance work more expensive than it would be or the models could have direct tax effects for a company. "The research field service management summarizes a leadership strategy that focuses on customer relations through a customer-oriented service structure and a customized service offering". Striving to develop and offer top quality services is something that all organizations can and should do. Regardless of the industry, the literature finds reasons and motives that service management and quality of service are something that should be worked with. For public housing companies, Blomé presents the following three arguments which point out that housing companies can benefit from using principles of service management: Customers are particularly dependent on housing company services because they depend on different social ties to the environment. This means that customers can not change supplier from one day to another as easily as other service markets. The housing company is particularly dependent on a good relationship with the tenant because it is difficult to cancel unfavorable relationships. A long-standing customer is usually a profitable business for the housing company, with less costs for renting. In order to answer the questions asked in the thesis, information about what the housing companies perceive about the different models and services is collected. The study will therefore consist of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. This means that the choice of method is both qualitative and quantitative, which literature refers to as "mixed-methods". The main results listed in the conclusion are as follows: - No matter how you choose to define the different models, it can be noted that the definition of them looks very different in the industry. What the companies have said they are working on for model versus what they actually work with differs in many cases. The theory describes a general problem of the concepts and definitions of the concepts when it comes to maintenance, the same problem seems to exist around the maintenance models. - The model Periodic apartment maintenance results in significantly more maintenance than the other models. Frequency is brought up as one of the factors that affect maintenance costs, reasonably those companies working with this model should have a higher maintenance cost compared to other companies. - Tenant-based apartment maintenance is the model that generates most satisfied customers while at the same time it is the least profitable model. Customer satisfaction is based on the theory of a service-oriented organization and this model, which is more customer and service oriented, confirms the theory of increased customer satisfaction. The interview also shows that it largely depends on the rental discounts that the tenants have the opportunity to receive. The fact that it is not particularly profitable can be partly due to rental discounts and partly to the rental regulations that exist. - Regardless of the number of customer options a housing company has in its range, the financial outcome looks similar, but for customer satisfaction, the more options, the happier customers. This thesis has focused on the municipal housing companies and how they experience the different models of apartment maintenance. Muyingo (2017) studied the differences between municipal actors and private actors regarding operating and maintenance costs, it would also be interesting to study if, and in that case how it differs from the apartment maintenance between these two different actors. How do the different actors differ in the way they work with internal maintenance and why, and also what are the consequences of that?

Full textHigh reliability is essential for hydropower plants in order to produce electricity to the people and the industry whenever needed. All technical systems are exposed to deterioration, which can lead to failure or even disaster in the form of production losses if maintenance has not been accomplished. The motives of maintenance and inspections of the technical systems condition are to discover deterioration in time and prevent failure and damage. Though, maintenance can be costly and due to the low energy prices power producing companies need to optimize maintenance in order to lower the costs and in the same time retain the demanded high reliability. The aim of this Master Thesis has been to investigate the option to develop a risk- based maintenance plan for a turbine at Finnfors power plant. We have concluded that condition based maintenance is a method that is adequate for the purpose. SINTEF Energy Norway AS has created a tool that estimates life-curves of individual components and compares different maintenance strategies by net present value evaluation. The outcome of this work is a pilot study of an implementation of this tool and thereby risk-based approach within decision- making processes of maintenance planning.

Full textDuring the writers literature study they received a clearer perception of the problematics that is embossed in the Railway industry. Several larger reorganisations had created an industry with unclear responsibilities and unclear roles resulting in several protracted litigations between the client and the contractor. The mood was described as bleak and compromises between the operators did not occur by the necessary means, the operators mostly considered only their own activities in the industry. A change had to be done. This report is limited to three key operators with connections to the maintenance on the railway. These key operators are: the client, the contractor and the transport operator. The report focuses on the all too reoccurring corrective maintenance those results in traffic-disturbances and traffic-stops. In the same time an insight occurred that a large need for implementing a preventive maintenance on a larger scale existed. Considering the knowledge the writers had acquired during their education about preventive maintenance, it slightly shocked them to see how the railway maintenance was carried out on the railway. Different operators in different organisations on the railway are dependant of each other to accomplish a functional railway, thus an increased interaction between the operators is achievable. Dialogue and interaction were two keywords that often reoccurred and the idea to, by an increased dialogue, introduce routines for an extended interaction was considered being a first step to solving the issues that exists on the railway. During the writers work on this report, they discovered that the railway industry is an industry under renewal. A process for improvement is currently going on, in the form of purer roles which was carried on after a decision was made by the Parliament of Sweden. The Forum for Accessibility (FFF) is a forum, which had their first meeting in April this year, they are currently working on increasing the interaction on the railway. In this forum the client, contractors and transport operators form a dialogue to achieve this increased interaction between one and another. A lot has happened during the writers work on this report and they have developed an interaction-strategy in the best way possible to make this strategy applicable considering the current conditions on the railway today.

Full textDigitalization in the manufacturing industry involves many challenges due to moving from manual controls towards digitalized condition monitoring. The challenges that occur with the new way of working is what data should be collected and how it should be analyzed. This thesis aims to streamline the industry and implement Industry 4.0 and Smart Maintenance through predictive maintenance in Scania. In this way a more cost-effective business is achieved at the same time as it contributes to creating a more sustainable company. The predictive maintenance will lead to a higher availability and reliability within the machine park at Scania´s cylinder head line. To be able to implement the maintenance strategy a software created by FANUC, the system supplier, is used. The software is a measuring tool called Servo Viewer and it can analyze the status of the machine by measuring the percentage of the total amount of torque that is available and the position error while the machine is running. The thesis also aims to investigate how to automatize the measurements within a database called MT-LINKi and later be analyzed by a software called AI Servo Monitor. The conclusion that can be drawn from the thesis is that it is possible to use FANUC Servo Viewer to measure the condition of the machine and therefore being able to predict when the maintenance needs to be performed as it is possible to read deviating factors during the measurements. With these factors it is possible to set triggers that will alarm the system when the machine exceeds them. Some of the components that will be possible to monitor condition for, are ball screws, linear control, encoders, belts, servomotors and servo cards. However the work isn’t not a complete concept in itself, more measurements are needed to be performed over time to create a normal situation and identify error development graphs to set the triggers in the software. As analysis and collection of measurement data became more time consuming than planned, the evaluation of MT-LINKi and AI Servo Monitor has not been performed and a further description of the work has been provided.

Full textThe thesis this report refers to has been carried out in one of Volvo Group truck operation’s(GTO) foundries in the engine factory in Skövde. Sandcasting is used to manufacture components for truck engines of cast iron. In the casting process, sandcores are manufactured according to the Epoxy-SO2-process. The sand cores are handled by robots in closed cells. The maintenance department experiences tha tcomponents on the robotic tools that move the cores have a short service life. One theory is that this is due to exposure to SO2. According to research, certain materials exposed to SO2 can corrode or become brittle. The corrosion process for metals can increase if SO2 react with water and oxygen to form sulfurous acid (H2SO3) or sulfuric acid (H2SO4). In order for thischemical process to begin, a relative humidity of at least 60% is required. Polymers such as plastic and rubber may swell, dissolve or become brittle upon exposed to SO2, H2SO3 or H2SO4. The final goal with this thesis is to define suitable components for the maintenance department that will be used in the renovation of the robotic tools. Before this can be done the tools need to be broken down to component level and be registered in a maintenance system. Furthermore, measurements of concentration of sulfur dioxide, humidity and temperature will be performed in the robotic cells. The results from the measurements are used as a basis for finding out if there are similar components that can withstand the environment better. When the tools are finally renovated, hopefully the unplanned stops will decrease. If the unplanned stops decrease, the maintenance costs associated with the robotic cells will also decrease. According to the measurements, the humidity was not high enough for the components in the robotic cells to risk corroding due to exposure to SO2. However, many pneumatic components are partly made of plastic that does not tolerate SO2. Many of these components are available as alternatives made of, for example, nickel-plated brass or stainless steel that can withstand the gas. The thesis has provided answers to the issues and led to concrete improvements. It has also created new ideas for continued improvement work.

Full textLike most companies in the air maintenance business TAM (Täby Air Maintenance) uses workorders to describe where the technicians should perform their work and how they should perform it. The task that was assigned was to improve the efficiency of TAM:s workorder system for the aircraft model SAAB 340. Their current system is to write the workordes manually in Microsoft Excel and then edit them to fit a specific customer. The workorder is then divided into different sections of the aircraft this is done to improve for the technicians when they decide how their work should be performed. When the workorder is completed will the responsible technician hand out it to his co-workers. The workers is then divided into groups, each group will be responsible for one section of the aircraft. To improve when the workorder is created the best solution was to come up with a program that creates the workorder in a more automatic way. This will save time but also improve how the workorder is created. The program is developed to make it easier to create and edit workorders compared to the now existing procedure.
