Abstract:
These 10 obvious propositions make a model of the specification of form, intended to expose underlying assumptions of developmental biology for examination and future experimentation. (I) The control of development is by means of local interactions, rather than global control mechanisms. (II) A macromolecule near a specific site will bind by mass action. (III) Starting with a precursor cell, all cells are assembled automatically by specifically binding macromolecules. (IV) At the surface of cells are specific adhesion sites that determine how all cells bind to each other. (V) An organism will assemble automatically from parts (macromolecules, structures, and cells) specified by nuclear control factors. (VI) The nuclear control factors in each cell are from precursor cells and factors derived by signaling from other cells. (VII)The macromolecules that determine specific binding, cell adhesion, and signaling are controlled by nuclear control factors, and in a grand feedback the cell adhesion and signaling systems determine the nuclear factor patterns. (VIII) The embryonic precursor cells for organs, termed “precursor groups,” are linked by adhesion and signaling relationships. (IX)The precursor groups include precursors for regions of an organ and boundary cells between regions having few cell types, growing without additional specific cell-to-cell relationships. (X)Organs are held together by cell adhesion in functional relationships. Thus the form and function of the organism is specified entirely by local control mechanisms. Without global control systems, information for form is in the genes for structural proteins, adhesion molecules, control factors, signaling molecules, and their control regions.

Björk, Ingrid. "Relativizing linguistic relativity : Investigating underlying assumptions about language in the neo-Whorfian literature." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Linguistics and Philology, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-8679.

Full text
Abstract:

This work concerns the linguistic relativity hypothesis, also known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which, in its most general form claims that ‘lan-guage’ influences ‘thought’. Past studies into linguistic relativity have treated various aspects of both thought and language, but a growing body of literature has recently emerged, in this thesis referred to as neo-Whorfian, that empirically investigates thought and language from a cross-linguistic perspective and claims that the grammar or lexicon of a particular language influences the speakers’ non-linguistic thought.

The present thesis examines the assumptions about language that underlie this claim and criticizes the neo-Whorfian arguments from the point of view that they are based on misleading notions of language. The critique focuses on the operationalization of thought, language, and culture as separate vari-ables in the neo-Whorfian empirical investigations. The neo-Whorfian stud-ies explore language primarily as ‘particular languages’ and investigate its role as a variable standing in a causal relation to the ‘thought’ variable. Tho-ught is separately examined in non-linguistic tests and found to ‘correlate’ with language.

As a contrast to the neo-Whorfian view of language, a few examples of other approaches to language, referred to in the thesis as sociocultural appro-aches, are reviewed. This perspective on language places emphasis on prac-tice and communication rather than on particular languages, which are vie-wed as secondary representations. It is argued that from a sociocultural per-spective, language as an integrated practice cannot be separated from tho-ught and culture. The empirical findings in the neo-Whorfian studies need not be rejected, but they should be interpreted differently. The findings of linguistic and cognitive diversity reflect different communicational practices in which language cannot be separated from non-language.

Full text
Abstract:
Concern over "welfare dependency" has featured prominently in the public discoursearound social assistance programmes in numerous countries for many years. The notionthat social assistance payments tend to sap the recipient's initiative, independence andpropensity for securing paid employment is widespread and is often assumed to be anobjective fact (rather than a concept) by public officials, social commentators and themedia. Consequently, charges of "welfare dependency" have often been used as the basisfor cutting social assistance expenditure, restricting eligibility or preventing newinitiatives. In South Africa, for example, the concept has been used in opposition todeveloping a universal Basic Income Grant (BIG).With the aid of case studies focusing on recent social welfare deVelopments in SouthAfrica, Australia and Brazil, this study attempts to critically analyse the term "welfaredependency" to determine which social values and assumptions inform the concept. Inaddition, the study aims to determine how "welfare dependency" manifests incontemporary social welfare policy and, most importantly, determine if the utilisation ofthe concept is related to other socio-economic agendas.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose with this study is to identify an organizational culture at Posten Örebro based on Edgar H. Schein´s theory about the three levels of culture. These three levels consist of artifacts, espoused beliefs and values and basic underlying assumptions. Artifacts represent the visible and tangible of an organization and this level is the easiest level to identify. Espoused beliefs and values include common thoughts and ideals within the organization and are an aware, but not necessarily material, cultural level. The essence of a culture contains basic underlying assumptions that influence underlying thoughts and actions and this is a level that is difficult to identify since it is unaware to the members of an organization. This study will also examine the organizational culture’s level of homogeneity among departments and employee levels within Posten Örebro. This study is based on the following questions: How can the organizational culture of Posten Örebro be described based on Schein´s levels of culture? How homogenous is the organizational culture among departments and employee levels within Posten Örebro? The result of this study shows that it is possible to apply Schein´s theory on Posten Örebro and to identify artifacts, espoused beliefs and values and an indication of a basic underlying assumption. The result also shows that the organizational culture within Posten Örebro is almost completely homogenous, with the exception of the value of change.Key words: Organizational culture, Schein, Posten, artifacts, espoused values, underlying assumptions

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of organizational culture among salespeople at a specific workplace. The purpose was also to investigate what motivates these salespeople in their work and the impact culture has on their motivation. We have used a qualitative research method to collect the empirical material. With the help of seven interviews, including six salespeople from one of Sweden’s biggest electronic retailer and also one information interview with a sales consultant, we attempted to find the answer to how they perceive the organizational culture and how it affects their work motivation.  The following questions are used to fulfill this purpose:   How do the salespeople experience the organizational culture?   What motivates the salespeople in their daily work?   What effects does the organizational culture have on the salespersons motivation?  As analytical tools we have used are the concept of organizational culture, Schein's description of the three components of culture and Herzberg Motivation-Hygiene theory.  The results of the study indicate that the salespeople experience a positive organizational culture and that this culture promotes fellowship and unity between colleagues, which in turn contributes to an enhanced motivation. Our study also shows that there are other factors contributing to the salespeople’s motivation such as conscious efforts of the organization and the factors that are built in into their daily work. A strong contest culture is also shown in the organization, the colleagues compete amongst each other to become the best salesperson.
 Vad motiverar försäljarna i deras dagliga arbete?

This study aims to examine how professionalization and commercializationinfluence the culture of the organization in a non-profit association. The studyobject is the elite preparatory activity in a sports organization. Therespondents in this study consist of head coaches, coaches and leaders inmanagerial positions who together have contributed to empirical material inthe form of qualitative data. The results were then analyzed out of Schein'stheory of organizational culture and the three cultural levels. The conclusionstated that artifacts and espoused values were identifiable in theorganizational culture based on Schein's theory. However, the underlyingassumptions were more difficult to understand. A connection that indicates aprofessionalization and commercialization of the non-profit activity could bepointed out.

Full text
Abstract:
Tugboat and towboat stability analysis may be performed with either “fixed trim” or “free to trim” methodologies under the current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The “fixed trim” method allows the vessel’s draft to change with increasing heel angle, while maintaining constant trim until the trimming moment is zero. The “free to trim” method is representative of how the vessel will behave, allowing the vessel to trim until the trimming moment is zero, with no restrictions on draft or trim. The use of the fixed trim method originally simplified the calculations performed by naval architects and produced accurate results for traditional model bow tugboats that were predominant. However, as tug styles and computers have evolved, the methodology is no longer as relevant or necessary. The paper quantifies what affect the fixed trim method has on the calculated righting energy at large angles of heel and determines when the method is no longer valid. The analysis looks at tugboats currently in operation representing a range of design characteristics and ages. The results show that the fixed trim method may provide a reasonably accurate righting arm curve for traditional model bow tugboats in some loading conditions. However, the fixed trim method can result in unrealistic and exaggerated righting arm curves for many foc’sle bow tugboat designs particularly in the intermediate and load line conditions. As older tugs are modified and new design trends evolve, it is important that naval architects understand the underlying reasoning behind the regulations that are applied to these vessels. The issue has become particularly relevant as older Load Line tugs are being repowered, modernized and, in many cases, converted into modern articulated tug and barge (ATB) units. These older tugs were not originally designed to the current stability standards and it is often a challenge for these vessels to comply.

Abstract:
Existing methods for predicting the tip-leakage losses in turbomachinery are based on a variety assumptions, many of which have not been fully verified experimentally. Recently, several detailed experimental studies in turbine cascades have helped to clarify the physics of the flow and provide data on the evolution of the losses. The paper examines the assumptions underlying the prediction methods in the light of these data. An improved model for the losses is developed, using one of the existing models as the starting point.

Abstract:
The design of a hovercraft involves complex principles derived from fluid mechanics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics and mechanical design. This work seeks to extract the fundamental principles from these subjects and implement them in the design and construction of a hovercraft. The challenge is to maintain a level-appropriate engineering standard while enabling sophomores from different engineering majors understand and effectively apply these standards. In order to do this, we have to decide what parameters to ignore and what engineering approximations should be made. By examination of the underlying engineering assumptions, it is shown that this aspect engages the engineering students interest as they find opportunities to implement what they are currently learning or have recently learnt. Actual construction of the hovercraft allows the basic theories to be tested and improves understanding of their effectiveness by quantifying underlying engineering assumptions. Assessment methods indicate that this project provides excellent preparation for future design innovation.

Most common tests performed to assess the strength of components made from ceramics are bend bar specimens tested in three-point and four-point flexure, C-ring and O-ring specimens under diametral compressive or tensile loads, and biaxial ring-on-ring specimens. ASTM closed form solutions [1] for the effective volume and area exist for specimen geometries based on classical theories with underlying assumptions. In general, the closed form expressions are valid for limited specimen geometry bounds. A discussion regarding the validity is presented via a numerical approach that computationally determines the effective volume and area for ceramic test specimens. The results obtained utilizing the numerical approach are compared with the closed form solutions. These comparisons point to the need for revisiting the underlying assumptions used in developing the closed form expressions. Finally, simple power law approximations are developed based on numerical results that directly give the effective volume and/or the effective area based on the Weibull modulus for the test geometries investigated in this research effort.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been considerable study of the potential mechanisms underlying the electro-mechanical response of ionic-polymer-metal composites (IPMCs). Most of these efforts have employed assumptions of uniform and balanced ion distribution within spherical cluster shapes, in the ionic polymer layer of the IPMC. Inspired by the results of a preliminary computational study, the present work investigates the impact of dispensing with these assumptions. A computational micromechanics model has been developed to study ion response in a single cluster of these ionomeric transducers. Assuming a constant solvated state, the model tracks the position of individual ions within a given cluster in response to ion-ion interaction, mechanical stiffness of the pendant chain, cluster surface response force, and external electric field loading. Results suggest that the classic assumptions will tend to under-predict electromechanical response and that charge imbalance has significant impact of cluster behavior.

Abstract:
This documents describes several studies undertaken to assess the applicability of MultiLevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods to problems of interest; namely in turbulent fluid flow over civil engineering structures. Several numerical experiments are presented wherein the convergence of quantities of interest with mesh parameters are studied at different Reynolds’ numbers and geometries. It was found that MLMC methods could be used successfully for low Reynolds’ number flows when combined with appropriate Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) strategies. However, the hypotheses for optimal MLMC performance were found to not be satisfied at higher turbulent Reynolds’ numbers despite the use of AMR strategies. Recommendations are made for future research directions based on these studies. A tentative outline for an MLMC algorithm with adapted meshes is made, as well as recommendations for alternatives to MLMC methods for cases where the underlying assumptions for optimal MLMC performance are not satisfied.
