Abstract:
Abstract Advancements in genetic science and conservation are crucial tools for enhancing the resilience of forest ecosystems against climate change, emphasizing the need for conservation strategies that protect genetic diversity. Strategic management and policy development are imperative to utilize these technologies effectively in conservation efforts, and this is evident in the participation of Greece and Serbia in international organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), and the European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN). Greece and Serbia are actively engaged within the specified organizations, and as such, their efforts in the conservation of forest genetic resources (FGRs) amidst climate change are structured under the guidance and influence of these stakeholders. Both countries recognize collaborative endeavors between research entities and conservation initiatives and underscore the potential of innovative genetic and biotechnological approaches in FGR management. Genetic monitoring and evaluation play a vital role in pinpointing species and populations at risk and guiding conservation priorities and actions. Examples of successful conservation practices are given both from Serbia and Greece, illustrating that combining traditional methods with modern genetic insights is key to sustaining forest ecosystems. Such comprehensive approaches are essential in countering the adverse effects of climate change on forests, thereby contributing to the conservation of global biodiversity and the stability of natural environments.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the last two decades, the globe has faced numerous significant public health crises triggered by zoonotic diseases. Notable instances include the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak from 2002 to 2004, the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa between 2013 and 2016, the spread of the Zika virus in the Americas from 2015 to 2016, and the COVID-19 pandemic starting in 2019. These events underscore the pressing need for a holistic, integrated approach to address these health threats. The global One Health index (GOHI) was introduced to meet this need, emphasizing a collaborative strategy across human, animal, and environmental health domains. This initiative is backed by significant global organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Together, they have clearly defined One Health as “an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems”. The GOHI project aims to assess the application and development status of the One Health approach in over 160 countries/territories, intending to enhance its global implementation. The GOHI framework evaluates various aspects, including external, intrinsic, and core drivers of One Health development. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary collaboration, GOHI offers insights into the global performance of the One Health approach, highlighting areas for improvement. Its ultimate goal is to guide nations in adopting effective strategies, optimizing health practices, and formulating policies that encompass the intricate interplay between humans, animals, and the environment.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 2013, the United Kingdom Department for International Development and the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy published a business case for the Carbon Market Finance Programme (CMFP). The core mandate: to build capacity and develop aids for least developed countries in sub-Saharan Africa to access finance via the carbon market. The chosen strategy involved signing emission reduction purchase agreements with private sector enterprises, using the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to verify generation of tradeable certified emissions reductions. The World Bank’s Carbon Initiative for Development (Ci-Dev) would implement the 12-year program. The team for the 2019 midterm evaluation found that program uncertainty—from sociopolitical challenges in pilot markets to global indecision on the future of Article 6 and carbon markets—would complicate assessing progress toward business case objectives. The collapse and failed recovery of the carbon market impacted underlying assumptions of the CMFP’s theory of change, and uncertainty about CDM’s future complicated evaluation of program sustainability. This chapter presents a practical approach to using realist evaluation to overcome the contextual uncertainties of the carbon market landscape, providing strengths and weaknesses of the approach applied and recommending a revised approach for future evaluations.

Abstract:
Biomass integrated gasification-gas turbine (BIG-GT) technology offers the opportunity for efficient and environmentally sound power generation from biomass fuels. Since biomass is ‘carbon-neutral’ it can be used in power generation equipment without contributing to the ‘greenhouse effect’ if it is grown sustainably. The Brazilian BIG-GT initiative is one of a number of initiatives world-wide aimed at demonstrating, and thereby establishing, biomass as an energy resource for power production. The goal of the Brazilian BIG-GT project is to confirm the commercial viability of producing electrici
