Full textThe thesis considers two subjects: (1) the significance of a critical feministanalysis of law and the political system, and the possible liberatingconsequences derived from reflecting on matters such as citizenship, therecognition of rights and the end of systems of oppression and (2) theevaluation of the degree to which the law constructs the immigrant womanas a subordinate subject, presenting this exclusionary construction as thetip of the iceberg of our social contract, our juridical and political system, which permits the reinforced exclusion of immigrant women and itssilencing. The study, thus, politicizes the situation of immigrant womenand tries to explain the reasons for their exclusion, and, in addition, includes a revision of the limitations surrounding gender and citizenship. The work consists of three parts: the starting point is a review of the"stages" of feminist thought, not only does this aim to clarify debates andpositions later considered, but it also acts as a revision of how and fromwhich point immigrant women can be considered in the intended method. The second part presents the instruments of analysis developed by feministtheory with regard to politics and law. The third part applies theseinstruments to the analysis of the legislation relating to foreigners, showingthat the different levels of access to rights by immigrant women is evidenceof an incomplete (gendered) citizenship, unequal for women. The analysisproves that law is one of the structures responsible for creating genderdifference resulting in a significant difference in the establishment ofhierarchies with regards to the enjoyment of rights. This is this can bewitnessed in three different situations in which women have a leading role:family reunification, domestic service and prostitution (sex work).

Full textThis doctoral dissertation tackles issues related to narrative methodologies in critical social psychology. Since the “narrative Turn” is possible to understand the world as composed by small stories. These stories emerge from subjects in one hand, and in the other hand from the social groups they form. Even though the Narrative Turn is understood as a critical approach in social sciences, it frequently lacks from a more reflexive practice regarding its political and ethical implications, transforming narrative in nothing more than a methodological technique. Feminist epistemologies offer the possibility of bringing this ethical and political component to research, considering feminism’s advocacy for the production of a socially responsible knowledge, that focus as much on the research process as it does on its final product. These epistemologies also offer some useful concepts such as partial knowledge, reflexivity and the incorporation of the researcher’s subjective dimension, which it seems to be plausible to work within narrative research methodologies. Considering this, the objective of this doctoral dissertation is to develop a proposal for critical methodologies using narratives, but funded over the ethical and political aspects from feminist epistemology. This doctoral dissertation is structured in three different moments. The first moment comprehends an introduction to the research topic, not just by analyzing literature related to the issue, but also producing knowledge from the experiences of other researchers that have previously worked with narrative methodologies or narrative inquiry more generally. This obeys to the objective of taking into account previously published literature around the research topic, in one hand, but also rescuing experience in this sort of research, in the other. Second, once accomplished the systematic review of the literature around the topic and the analysis of the field work, this project contemplates the writing of a meta-narrative with a methodological aim, as a strategy for accounting the knowledge produced by the analysis of the experiences of other researchers, and the systematization of the literature review. The objective of this meta-narrative is to be not only a theoretical development, but mainly as a narrative proposal grounded in feminist epistemologies. Hence, including feminist research issues such as partial perspective, reflexivity through writing and the implication of the researcher, as baseline conditions to develop an accountable social research. The third and final moment, consists in using the new narrative-feminist research proposal, in order to project its methodological possibilities and limits for one thing, and considering its ethical and political issues as a second but equally important issue.

The focus of our research is on Edna Pontellier, the protagonist of The Awakening, a 19th century novel whose main character is a housewife who was in search of her own emancipation. Our theory and critical resources are supported by works written by Per Seyersted(1979) and Nadilza Moreira(2003) both references names for Chopin's scholarship.Besides, we used Beauvoir' (1970), Woolf' (2012) and Showalter's(1979) critical studies to help us to develop our understanding of the 19th century social-hisorical women's context in the USA. For the study of representation we used the concept fromAna Gabriela Macedo e Ana Luisa Amaral(2005). To support our analysis on the role of the narrative voice we used Chris Baldick(1991) Our conclusion is that: Edna Pontellier represents a multiplicity of images and they are presented to the reader as the narrative develops itself showing Edna's multiples “awakenings” as a woman in transition.
