Abstract:
The ArgumentBesides the well-known advocate of unified field theories, there was “another Einstein,” who was skeptical of the continuum as a foundational element in physics. This paper presents evidence for the existence of this “other Einstein,” and of the debate between the two Einsteins that lasted most of Einstein's life.

The electromagnetic interaction in the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann (EIH) equations of motion for charged particles in Einstein's unified field theory (EUFT) is found to be automatically precluded by the conventional identification of the skew part of the fundamental tensor with the Faraday tensor. It is shown that an alternative identification, suggested by observations of Einstein, Bergmann and Papapetrou, would lead to the expected electromagnetic interaction, were it not for the intervention of an infelicitous (radiation) gauge. Therefore, an EIH analysis of EUFT is inconclusive as a test of t

We revisit Weyl’s unified field theory, which arose in 1918, shortly after general relativity was discovered. As is well known, in order to extend the program of geometrization of physics started by Einstein to include the electromagnetic field, H. Weyl developed a new geometry which constitutes a kind of generalization of Riemannian geometry. However, despite its mathematical elegance and beauty, a serious objection was made by Einstein, who considered Weyl’s theory not suitable as a physical theory since it seemed to lead to the prediction of a not yet observed effect, the so-called “second

In this paper we show how to describe the general theory of a linear metric compatible connection with the theory of Clifford valued differential forms. This is done by realizing that for each spacetime point the Lie algebra of Clifford bivectors is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of [Formula: see text]. In that way the pullback of the linear connection under a local trivialization of the bundle (i.e., a choice of gauge) is represented by a Clifford valued 1-form. That observation makes it possible to realize immediately that Einstein's gravitational theory can be formulated in a way which is si

Because of the dynamical equivalence between the f(R) gravity and the Brans-Dicke theory, the dynamical equation in the f(R) gravity is suggested to be derived from a view point of thermodynamics here. By a conformal transformation, the Brans–Dicke theory in the Jordan frame could be expressed as a minimal coupling scalar field theory in Einstein frame. Using the entropy-area relation [Formula: see text], the correct Friedmann equations could be gotten in both frames. Furthermore, we also discuss the corresponding generalized Misner–Sharp energies for theoretical consistence.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the question of why general relativity was perceived to be an incomplete theory by many contemporary scientists, including Einstein himself. In the formative years, general relativity was often seen as a partial or incomplete theory to be generalized, encompassed, or superseded by an overarching unifying theory that would also explain the constitution of matter, typically by including gravity and electromagnetism. This chapter also discusses Einstein's essay, entitled “Generalization of Gravitation Theory,” which he added to the third edition of The Meaning of Relativity. This essay reflects Einstein's struggle in his search for a unified field theory, which in the last ten years of his life was based on the notion of a non-symmetric metric.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on John Wheeler’s work on geons and geometrodynamics which would lead to many concepts and results that would be of importance to quantum gravity research - these projects, initially, were rather old fashioned, harking back to the classical ‘unified field theory’ work of Einstein. Moreover, we find that this work that we now tend to think of as foundational in quantum gravity---e.g., we often think of ‘quantum geometrodynamics’ as just another phrase for ‘quantum gravity’---had its roots firmly embedded in the quest for understanding the elementary particles. It wasn’t until after 1957 that Wheeler began to look seriously at general relativity and quantum gravity independently from concerns in particle physics, and this shift in fact coincides with a more general trend to treat gravitational physics as a worthwhile field in its own right.
