Abstract:
A new maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique based on the bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm for photovoltaic system (PV system) is proposed, namely tunicate swarm algorithm-based MPPT (TSA-MPPT). The proposed algorithm is implemented on the PV system with five PV modules arranged in series and integrated with DC-DC buck converter. Then, the PV system is tested in a simulation using PowerSim (PSIM) software. TSA-MPPT is tested under varying irradiation conditions both uniform irradiation and non-uniform irradiation. Furthermore, to evaluate the performance, TSA-MPPT is compared with perturb & observe-based MPPT (P&O-MPPT) and particle swarm optimization-based MPPT (PSO-MPPT). The TSA-MPPT has an accuracy of 99% and has a reasonably practical capability compared to the MPPT technique, which already existed before.

Abstract:
This study deals with the evaluation of self-healing ability of conducting polymer corresponding to a corrosion process. Poly ortho-anisidine (PoA) was doped with Phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) and Tungstosilicic acid (TSA) and incorporated in polyvinyl butyral (PVB) coatings. The self-healing abilities of coatings were evaluated using open circuit potential (OCP) in 0.1 M NaCl solution for 45 hours of immersion. The coatings containing doped PoA showed increased positive potential of OCP after 45 hours of immersion as compare toblank PVB which showed a constant profile of OCP over the time indicating uniform corrosion under the coating.Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that PoA doped with TSA is more stable and more effective in the coating. High resolution Transmission Electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirms the doping of PoA.

Abstract:
Self-expanding stents are small medical devices used to treat vascular disease and are typically fabricated from a super-elastic, shape memory alloy known as Nitinol and have a fine mesh structure. This paper describes preliminary work on the application of Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) to Nitinol stents. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on thin tubes of Nitinol to characterise the material mechanical properties. TSA calibration exercises were conducted, which showed that Nitinol exhibits a non-uniform thermoelastic response through its elastic region that corresponded to the superelastic behaviour. Initial TSA demonstrated that a viable thermoelastic signal could be obtained from the stents. In high resolution tests the effect of motion and noise were considerable but it was still possible to obtain a readable thermoelastic signal.

Abstract:
Due to their multiple advantages, piezoceramic materials have been widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM). Piezoceramic patch-based smart aggregate (SA) and spherical piezoceramic-based smart aggregate (SSA) have been developed for damage detection of concrete structures. However, the stress waves generated by these two types of transducers are limited by their geometry and are unsuitable for use in two-dimensional concrete structures (e.g., shear walls, floors and cement concrete pavements). In this paper, a novel embeddable tubular smart aggregate (TSA) based on a piezoceramic tube was designed, fabricated and tested for use in two-dimensional (2D) structures. Due to its special geometry, radially uniform stress waves can be generated, and thus the TSA is suitable for damage detection in planar structures. The suitability of the transducer for use in structural health monitoring was investigated by characterizing the ability of the transducer to transmit and measure stress waves. Three experiments, including impedance analysis, time of arrival analysis and sweep frequency analysis, were conducted to test the proposed TSA. The experimental results show that the proposed TSA is suitable for monitoring the health condition of two-dimensional concrete structures.

Abstract:
This study applied the reciprocal matrix approach to deduce the correlation between hand-felt (HF) and tissue softness analyzer (TSA) instrumental measurements of tissue softness. The research was conducted in three phases, which are discussed separately. In the phase one study, results indicated that systematic collection of samples and preparation of test specimens were the foundation of successful tests. TSA-HF and tensile strength exhibited a strong negative correlation. In the future, same-unit physical properties can provide a basis for discussing the commonality and complementary natures of hand-felt and TSA softness measurements. In phase two, through the reciprocal matrix approach, subjective softness assessments performed by humans were reliably quantified. The quantified values were further applied to a statistical analysis using the t-test to distinguish and train professional panelists. In phase three of HF panel test results, all independent panels were compared to one another under a uniform scale established by four standard samples. The calibrated HF panel values were incorporated with TSA-HF results to establish technical curves between the softness and tensile strength, which were helpful for onsite workers to carry out process controls.

Abstract:
Since 2011, we have published four research papers in TAPPI Journal. In this fifth paper, we summarize information from the 2023 study, use experimental data collected in 2019 and 2021, and examine methodologies for generating onsite, employee-qualified standard samples for timely quality management. We accomplished three objectives. First, four qualified standard samples were successfully generated for high, medium, and low softness levels in intervals surpassing statistically significant variance (TSA-HF ≥ 2.0, CHF-bulk ≥ 2.4, CHF-surface ≥ 2.6). The three correlation coefficients (R2) — panel-corrected hand-felt bulk softness (CHF-bulk), panel-corrected hand-felt surface softness (CHF-surface), and total tensile strength (TTS) — showed high correlation to analyzed softness (TSA-HF) (CHF-bulk: 0.9789, CHF-surface: 0.995, TTS: 0.975), suggesting these could facilitate identification of hand-felt pair-wise comparisons, as well as instrument calibration. Second, based on extensive practical experience on production lines, we know that certain areas demand special attention when collecting standard samples, including base paper, following the Yankee dryer and semi-finished and finished products following the processing machines. Third, with confirmation for TSA-HF and Panel-HF, we can produce qualified standard samples with more uniform qualities, enabling well-trained quality inspectors to perform their tasks on time.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Integrated retroviral DNA is subject to epigenetic gene silencing, but the viral and host cell properties that influence initiation, maintenance, and reactivation are not fully understood. Here we describe rapid and high-frequency epigenetic repression and silencing of integrated avian sarcoma virus (ASV)-based vector DNAs in human HeLa cells. Initial studies utilized a vector carrying the strong human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) immediate-early (IE) promoter to drive expression of a green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter gene, and cells were sorted into two populations based on GFP expression [GFP(+) and GFP(−)]. Two potent epigenetic effects were observed: (i) a very broad distribution of GFP intensities among cells in the GFP(+) population as well as individual GFP(+) clones and (ii) high-frequency GFP reporter gene silencing in GFP(−) cells. We previously showed that histone deacetylases (HDACs) can associate with ASV DNA soon after infection and may act to repress viral transcription at the level of chromatin. Consistent with this finding, we report here that treatment with the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA) induces GFP activation in GFP(−) cells and can also increase GFP expression in GFP(+) cells. In the case of the GFP(−) populations, we found that after removal of TSA, GFP silencing was reestablished in a subset of cells. We used that finding to enrich for stable GFP(−) cell populations in which viral GFP reporter expression could be reactivated by TSA; furthermore, we found that the ability to isolate such populations was independent of the promoter driving the GFP gene. In such enriched cultures, hCMV IE-driven, but not the viral long terminal repeat-driven, silent GFP reporter expression could be reactivated by the transcriptional activator prostratin. Microscopy-based studies using synchronized cells revealed variegated reactivation in cell clones, indicating that secondary epigenetic effects can restrict reactivation from silencing. Furthermore we found that entry into S phase was not required for reactivation. We conclude that HDACs can act rapidly to initiate and maintain promoter-independent retroviral epigenetic repression and silencing but that reactivation can be restricted by additional mechanisms.

Abstract:
Abstract The exclusive expression weiyi ‘sole/only’ in Mandarin can appear preverbally in a relative clause (e.g., wo weiyi xihuan de shu ‘the sole book I like’) but not in other types of clauses (e.g., *Wo weiyi xihuan shu, intended: ‘I only like books’). This paper first justifies the claim that weiyi may not only function as an adjectival modifier but also appear preverbally inside a relative clause, and then demonstrates how weiyi is related to definiteness and takes scope out of a relative clause. It is proposed that preverbal weiyi is part of a DP which undergoes overt A’-movement in the process of relativization. The syntactic structure and semantic composition of a matching analysis are offered to show how a uniform account can be given across adjectival and relative weiyi. A major implication of this paper is that Mandarin does not possess a relative pronoun but allows a DP-internal focus expression to mark syntactic movement in relativization. A comparison between relative constructions involving weiyi and English all-clefts is also discussed.

Abstract:
Aim: Sessile serrated lesions (SSL) have the potential for malignant transformation into colorectal carcinoma (CRC), which develops via the serrated pathway of carcinogenesis. Material and Methods: Based on colonoscopy and pathology reports, all sessile serrated lesions or polyps in the risk screening group were studied at an urban medical research center between July 2018 and July 2022. We prospectively included consecutive colorectal polyps classified as a hyperplastic polyp (HP), sessile serrated lesion (SSL), traditional serrated adenoma (TSA), unclassified serrated adenoma, and synchronous neoplasm or polyp. Results: During the 48-month study period, 167 cases of sessile serrated lesions or polyps were diagnosed. In the study, 97 (58.1%) of the patients were male, 70 were female (41.9%), and the mean age was 59.74 (± 11.1). Hematoxylin-eosin preparations were available for complete analysis for 226 SSL, and 117 had synchronous adenomatous polyps or carcinomas. Approximately 88.1% of all polyps were ≤10 mm or less in diameter. There was a significant correlation between polyp size (≤10 mm) and epithelial polyps (p=0.000). In particular, polyps detected in the sigmoid colon with the rectum were relatively larger than in other locations. The sigmoid colon and rectum were the most common locations for sessile serrated lesions in our study. There was a significant association between epithelial polyps and anatomical locations (p=0.000). The distribution of all epithelial polyps was as follows; HP was the most frequently observed epithelial polyp with 57.7% (194 polyps), SSL was 6.8% (23 polyps), and TSA was 2.1% (7 polyps), unclassified serrated adenoma was 0.6% (2 cases), synchronous conventional were seen in 31% (104 polyps) of SSL or polyps, and carcinoma with polyps was detected in three (0.9%) cases Conclusions: Hyperplastic polyps are the most common sessile serrated lesions, and synchronous conventional tubular adenomas were most commonly accompanied by hyperplastic polyps. HPs were most commonly observed in the distal colon, particularly in the sigmoid colon and rectum. Future prospective studies using uniform diagnostic criteria and considering clinical outcomes are needed to make accurate decisions regarding surveillance and treatment of patients with serrated lesions.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to provide a critical assessment of the right of a seller to cure his breach to a contractual agreement (“right to cure”), with specific consideration to the delivery of non-conforming goods under domestic and transnational sale agreements. Subsequent to an elucidation of the methodological and doctrinal aspects of the research conducted herein, the paper delves into an in-depth analysis of the concept of warranty for hidden defects, tackling such concept from its Roman origins and the outset of Anglo-American law, to the current stance adopted by the Italian judicial system. The research then extends to analyzing the right to cure with a specific focus on English and American law, and cross-border sales between businesses, with particular regard to the provisions set forth by article 7.1.4 of the Unidroit Principles, and by articles 37 and 48 of the CISG, and in the most prominent European private law harmonization projects. The paper concludes by assessing the compatibility between the right to cure, available to the seller as urgent remedy for defects in sold goods after the completion of a contractual agreement, and the traditional legal institutions concerning defect warranties under Italian law, with the aim of determining whether, and to what extent, such right may find a place in our judicial system.<br>Il presente contributo si prefigge di esaminare il diritto alla correzione dell'inadempimento ("right to cure") del venditore, con specifico riguardo alla consegna di un bene affetto da vizi di conformità nei contratti di vendita domestici e transnazionale.

Doctoral thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11393/251086.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This book provides comprehensive information essential for both the design of new steel structures and the analysis of existing ones. It covers the fundamental principles of design, procedures, historical context, specifications, and the Turkish standard TS 498 for design loads. It also addresses probability and factor of safety, the application of steel in structures, the mechanical properties of structural steels, and an introductory comments on TS 498. The book covers fundamental concepts including the behavior of tension and compression members, methods for their analysis, and details regarding compound struts. Compound struts with uniform cross-sections, designs for them in groups I-II-III, struts with varying moment of inertia, and cross-ties are addressed. Essential information on Mohr’s Circle equations and the product moment of inertia are reminded. Subsequent chapters delve into beams, lateral buckling, and beam-columns, making distinctions between beams subjected exclusively to bending and those subjected to both axial loading and bending. Additionally, analysis of fasteners, such as rivets and bolts, include design factors like length, diameter, fastener spacing, weight, modes of failure, types of fastened connections, design assumptions and allowable stresses, and other design considerations are included. Similarly, different types of bolts, advantages, installation methods of high-strength bolts, allowable stresses, and design considerations are discussed. The design of fastened connections, including direct shear, pure moment connections, and eccentric load connections for fasteners in shear, along with the AISC recommendations and the method of instantaneous center of rotation are explained. Combined shear and torsion as a more complex scenario are also addressed. Design rules for TS 648 and allowable stresses for steel structures are presented in tabular form. Further chapters cover welding, discussing its advantages and disadvantages, types, classifications, symbols, quality, defects, and key issues related to inspection and control. Specific types of welds, such as butt and fillet welds, are examined, along with stresses in welded connections, theoretical considerations, effective areas of welds, and additional considerations. Finally, the book covers torsion, including plate girders, trusses, splice and connection design principles, and allowable stresses. These topics are explored in depth through illustrative examples, and the book concludes with a presentation of a previous three-course examination. A brief introduction is included in this book, but detailed examples are decided to be included in future Steel Structures II book.

Abstract:
The chapter looks into efforts of non-consumption of tea. The campaign against tea proceeded in different colonies at different times, eventually, the Continental Association imposed uniformity on the diversity. The chapter explains how the ban on tea took nearly a year, reflecting the difficulty in convincing Massachutsettsans to see tea as a political product instead of a consumer product. It mentions how tea parties were sometimes just propaganda even if Patriots wrote how they were signs of widespread, uniform, and already-accomplished tea resistance. Meanwhile, Loyalists' fears became half-true since non-consumption was eventually enforced, the ban on tea was implemented, and the Association became a tool for finding colonists disaffected from the Patriot cause.

Abstract:
To enhance sensing or communication capabilities, the utilization of extremely large multiple-input multiple-output transceiver arrays (EL-MIMO-TAs) with high array degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) holds significant promise for future applications, such as integrated sensing and communications systems. However, the implementation of EL-MIMO-TAs may face the problem of mutual coupling. It also necessitates a substantial number of radio frequency chains, leading to undesirable hardware costs. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in sparse array designs aimed at reducing mutual coupling and hardware expenses while maintaining a constant array DoFs. Nevertheless, conventional sparse arrays primarily benefit from spatial DoFs alone. A shift toward the development of sparse polarimetric arrays has emerged, offering low mutual coupling, and enhanced spatial DoFs along with the ability to exploit the polarimetric characteristics of electromagnetic waves. This chapter explores different strategies for designing sparse polarimetric arrays, focusing on the sparsity of array element positions—specifically, non-uniform, uniform, and hybrid non-uniform and uniform sparsity. Additionally, it introduces a novel method for estimating multi-dimensional parameters based on the reconstructed covariance matrix through data fitting, emphasizing low computational complexity. A new beamformer in the spatial-polarimetric joint domain is also presented, showcasing its ability to suppress main-lobe interferences and improved beamforming performance from a sparse reconstruction perspective.

Abstract I now called upon the District Governor, and found him at home, surrounded by a bevy of officers in full uniform. He told me that a Cossack colonel had recently died of consumption, and that the funeral ceremony was then going on inside the church. The men of the regiment were all mounted and drawn up facing the holy edifice. The cold was very great, and the troops had every facility afforded them for sowing the seeds of their colonel’s malady. Indeed, the frost was so severe that the District Governor and his friends had found it inconvenient to remain inside the church, and had returned to drink tea at home, until such time as the service was concluded.

Abstract:
Tea tree oil is the most sought-after natural oil because of its diverse pharmacological actions. It is widely used as a superficial antiseptic because of its broad-spectrum antimicrobial action. However, the oil is volatile and direct application on the skin can cause severe erythema. The present work aims to overcome this issue by developing topical gels loaded with tea tree oil nanosponges. Tea tree oil was encapsulated into nanosponges by emulsion solvent evaporation using varying concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol and ethyl cellulose. The nanosponges formed were subsequently characterized for its size and drug entrapment and then loaded into carbopol 934 gels for convenient administration. The viscosity, pH, spreadability, extrudability, ex vivo permeation, skin irritation potential and antimicrobial activity of the gels were tested. The nanosponge formulations exhibited particle size in the range 307.8 -394.4 nm with an oil entrapment efficiency ranging from 62.40% - 89.50%. Scanning Electron Microscopy of nanosponges demonstrated the presence of nano sized pleomorphic particles with spongy surface. pH of the gels ranged between 6.37±0.11 to 6.45±0.21 and spreadability between 3.60±0.15 to 4.28±0.11 g.cm/sec. The gels extruded easily and uniformly from the collapsible tubes. The antimicrobial activity and in vivo skin-irritation studies confirmed the non-irritant nature of the gel along with its antifungal and antibacterial activity. The study demonstrated that showed that the encapsulation of tea tree oil within nanosponges helped in the prevention of side effects associated with the use of pure tea tree oil.

Abstract:
Abstract At the time of our arrival Tashkent had been under the Bolsheviks for nearly a year. Trams and horse cabs plied, and a few things could still be bought in the shops. In our hotel we could get quite good meals, and life generally at this time was not very different from what it must have been before the revolution. But the position rapidly deteriorated. Hotels and restaurants were closed or turned into Soviet institutions meagrely patronized by the proletariat. All motor cars had been commandeered for the Bolshevik officials. Theatres were still open. While we were in Tashkent an Englishman passed through with a troupe of performing elephants! These he was taking to Kashgar over the none too easy Terek Dawan. Everywhere one saw Austrian prisoners of war. ·Many still in their uniforms with F.J.I. on their hats. In all cafes and restaurants an orchestra of Austrians played. The most fashionable restaurant was the Chashka Chai (Cup of Tea). We were very soon known to the band here and they used to break off their tune and play ‘Tipperary’ as we entered! Under the deep shade of the karagach (a kind of elm) or acacia we would eat ices and drink beer, or one of the substitutes for tea or coffee, to the pleasant sound of running water in the street gutters.

Abstract:
In the summer of 2015, the government of Uttar Pradesh began putting out advertisements looking for “peons”—the local term for low-ranking office helpers. UP, as the state is known, is home to more than 200 million Indians, packed into an area about the size of Texas (which has one-seventh as many inhabitants). Fittingly, UP needed a small army of new peons: in all, 368 jobs were posted. A very strange thing happened next. Applications poured in. After a painstaking survey that took weeks, 2.3 million résumés were counted. There were 6,250 candidates for each available position. Some of the applicants had doctorates. While peon jobs are stable—even respectable—they are by no means glamorous. Peons are usually the first people one sees at Indian government offices, dressed in shabby, faded khaki uniforms; their work involves tracking down dusty files, fetching tea, and ushering in guests. Salaries range from just $150 to $250 a month. The question is why these low-skill, low-paying jobs were in such high demand. There are several possible explanations. First, $250 a month may sound like a pittance, but it is not insignificant: it amounts to nearly double the median national salary. Second, peons are influential gatekeepers in Indian bureaucracy. If you need to see a local officer, a small bribe can go a long way. But workplace corruption is hardly something young, idealistic Indians aspire to (let alone the ones with doctorates). Something deeper was going on. A third possibility is that India simply isn’t creating enough jobs. A 2016 report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) revealed that India’s working-age population expanded by 300 million between 1991 and 2013. But during those same twenty-two years, the UNDP says, the economy created just 140 million new jobs. Put another way, 160 million working-age Indians were without formal employment. Job creation is the number one headache for India’s policymakers. By some estimates, India needs to create a million new jobs every month simply to keep pace with the gush of new entrants to the workforce. There is little evidence that India has a plan to meet this demand.

Abstract:
A decade ago, IT — through its innovations in business process reengineering — led the way in breaking down the inefficiencies within companies. Firms in the new millennium now face relentless pressure to perform better, faster, cheaper, while maintaining a high level of guaranteed results. Firms must thus focus on their core competencies and outsource all other activities. Working with a partner, however, requires breaking down the inefficiencies between organizations and coping with frequent change across the entire end-to-end value chain. In this new world of collaborative commerce and collaborative souring, a standard business process is simply inadequate. Using e-contracts to build new business relationships and to fulfill e-contracts through the Internet are important trends. E-contracting is however not a new concept. The history of e-contracting can be reviewed from legal and technology aspects. Over the last 20 years or so, a growing body of research in artificial intelligence has focused on the representation of legislation and regulations (Sergor, 1991). As specific regulations, contracts are used to regulate the actions of twoor multi-party interactions. Gardner (1987) has developed contract formation rules. Her work concerns legislation about the nature of exchanges that lead to contractual relations. The ALDUS project and Legal Expert project investigated drafting the Sale Goods contract (ALDUS, 1992) and the United Nations Convention on contracts for the international sale of goods (Yoshino 1997, 1998), respectively. Detailed information on developing logic-based tools for the analysis and representation of legal contracts can be found in Daskalopulu (1997, 1999). The law regards contracts as collections of obligations; research in this area includes automated inference methods, which are intended to facilitate application of the theory to the analysis of practical problems. The purpose of a legal e-contracting system is to clarify and expand an incomplete and imprecise statement of requirements into a precise formal specification. In the early 1990s, the development of EDI (electronic data interchange) was a significant movement for electronic commerce. EDI was considered a term that refers solely to electronic transactions and contracts (Justice Canada, 1995). EDI requires an agreement between trading partners that not only dictates a standard data format for their computerto- computer communications, but also governs all related legal issues of EDI usage. In 1987, the first set of EDI rules was named the Uniform Rules of Conduct for Interchange of Trade Data by Teletransmission (UNCID, 1987). In 1990, the American Bar Association (ABA) published a Model Trading Partner Agreement and Commentary, together with an explanatory report (Winn &amp; Wright, 2001). In 2000 IBM submitted to OASIS (for standardization) the first example of an XML-based EDI TPA language, called Trading Partner Agreement Markup Language (tpaML). While the EDI standard introduced efficient communication channels between companies, its implementation was not widely accepted due to its high installation costs, lack of flexibility, and technological limitations (Raman, 1996). With the development of the Internet, electronic contracting began to be interpreted in broader terms. In this new view, an e-contract is not only used as a legally binding agreement between a buyer and seller, but it can also used across different workflow systems to cross different organizational business processes (Koetsier, Grefen, &amp; Vonk, 1999; Kafeza, Chiu, &amp; Kafeza, 2001; Cheung, Chiu &amp; Till, 2002) to integrate different Web services (Cheung et al., 2002, 2003). E-contracting has become synonymous with business integration over electronic networks.

Abstract:
Abstract NAC International Inc. (NAC) is providing transportable storage canisters (TSCs) to Central Plateau Cleanup Company CPCCo) for long term dry storage of capsulized radioactive waste at the Hanford Site in Richland, WA. The TSC consists of 316/316L stainless-steel components welded to form a cylindrical canister that acts as a confinement boundary for the payload. The heat affected zones of the welded areas are most susceptible to Chloride Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking (CISCC), that may limit the life of the TSC. To mitigate CISCC during the anticipated 300-year storage period, an overcoating is applied to the heat affected zones of all external TSC fabrication welds, referred to as Cold Spray. This paper will discuss the purpose, development, and application of Cold Spray to the CPCCo TSCs. Cold Spray is a process whereby metal powder particles are deposited upon a substrate by means of ballistic impingement via a high-velocity stream of gas, resulting in a uniform deposition with minimal porosity and high bond strength. Temperatures are below the melting thresholds of many engineering materials enabling a large variety of application uses. NAC developed a process for Cold Spray application onto the 316/316L stainless-steel TSCs to serve as a CISCC protective/mitigative coating for its canister products. Testing during development arrived at nickel as the deposited coating material and nitrogen as the gas vehicle, along with a set of various application parameters. The qualified process was implemented onto the CPCCo TSCs. Prior to application, the equipment and process are validated via coupons that are sprayed and then tested to meet requirements for adhesion strength (ASTM C633) and porosity (ASTM E2109). After successful coupon testing, Cold Spray is performed on the external TSC fabrication welds, to include heat affected zones. Acceptance testing of the resulting deposition is performed via visual inspection.

Abstract:
Abstract Self-healing coatings have been promising due to their automatic recovering functions, which can extend the coating lifetime with lower maintenance costs. One of the most effective strategies to achieve self-healing property is to encapsulate healing agents inside microcapsules and integrate the microcapsules into the coating matrix. In this study, linseed oil was successfully encapsulated in poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) shell via in-situ polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the chemical composition of the synthesized microcapsules. The size and morphology of the synthesized microcapsules were observed with both optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The microcapsules were integrated into epoxy coating matrix to fabricate the self-healing coating. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) showed a uniform distribution of microcapsules inside the coating matrix. The robust microcapsules with the high core content ensured their self-healing function. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to monitor the anti-corrosion performance of the self-healing coating. SEM observation of the artificial cracks proved that the self-healing coating exhibited excellent healing performance comparing to the neat epoxy coating.

Abstract:
Abstract Displacement and stress fields in a functionally graded (FG) fiber-reinforced rotating annular disk with a non-uniform thickness profile, subjected to angular deceleration and a temperature profile were investigated. Unidirectional fibers were considered to be circumferentially distributed within the disk with fiber volume fraction changing radially. The governing equations for displacement, stress, and temperature fields were solved using finite difference method. The results indicated that thermal induced stresses were more dominate than the rotational induced stresses. Disks which were fiber rich at the inner radius, the fibers made negligible difference on the displacement and stress fields when compared to a homogenous disk made from the matrix material. In addition, it was found that the deceleration magnitude had no effect on the radial and hoop stresses, nor the temperature on the developed shear stress. The shear stress was only affected by the disk deceleration. Tsai-Wu failure criterion was applied for decelerating disks to ascertain their failure behavior. The results show that Tsai-Wu failure index is dominated by the thermal stresses.

Abstract:
