Review of Radio Happy Isles: Media and Politics at Play in the Pacific, by Robert Seward. Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press. It was a pleasure to open Robert Seward's Radio Happy Isles to find an excellent summation of some of the intricacies of radio media at work in the small island countries, both below and above the Equator. It also contains references to Australia and New Zealand, as both run a regular short-wave service with programmes aimed at audiences at the Pacific region.

Abstract:
OBJECTTVE: To compare nine on-line bibliographic databases to obtain bibliographic references on specific drug interactions. DESIGN: Seven bibliographic databases were selected for their ability to provide information concerning drug interactions: EMBASE, MEDLINE, TOXLINE, BIOSIS, Chemical Abstracts (CAS), PHARMLINE, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (IPA). Two French on-line bibliographic databases (i.e., PASCAL, BIBLIOGRAPHIF) were also tested to compare them with the other international databases. Twenty drug interactions were selected randomly using the journal Reactions Weekly 1993. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The total number of references, the number of potentially relevant references, the number of case report references, the number of unique references in the total number of references, and the number of unique references between potentially relevant references were analyzed by using the Friedman two-way ANOVA by ranks. For each database, relevance and relative recall were calculated. RESULTS: For the total number of references, EMBASE was significantly more comprehensive than all other databases (p < 0.05). EMBASE had a significantly greater number of potentially relevant references than IPA, PHARMLINE, CAS, and BIBLIOGRAPHIF (p < 0.05). For the total number of case report references, only one significant difference, between EMBASE and BIBLIOGRAPHIF (p < 0.05), was observed. MEDLINE and TOXLINE had the lowest cost per potentially relevant reference. CONCLUSIONS: To obtain bibliographic references on drug interactions, the first step should be to search MEDLINE or TOXLINE; the second step, for completeness, should be to search EMBASE.

Abstract:
Biomedical databases are an important source of information for health technology assessment. However, there is considerable variation in the costs of accessing commercial databases. We sought to measure the quality, amount of overlap, and costs of information retrieved from two of the main database sources — MEDLINE and EMBASE. Librarians at two health technology assessment agencies ran a total of eight literature searches on various medical technologies, using both databases. All search results were independently reviewed by two researchers. The researchers were asked to identify relevant references and to rank each of these according to a level of evidence scale. The results were tabulated to show the number of references identified by each database, the number of relevant references ranked by level of evidence, and the number of these references that were unique to one or the other database. The cost of retrieving references from each source was also calculated. Each database contained relevant references not available in the other. Because of the longer time lag for indexing in MEDLINE, many of the references that originally appeared to be unique to EMBASE were subsequently available in MEDLINE as well. Since our study was conducted, MEDLINE has been made available worldwide, free of charge, via the Internet. Hence, the cost difference between the databases is now even greater. However, notwithstanding the costs, it appears that literature searches that rely on only one or the other database will inevitably miss pertinent information.

Abstract:
The basic text books in Death and Dying make numerous references to the literature. A sample of five such texts disclosed that each covers similar topics, but with noted exceptions, they use references that are unique to each text. The authors' areas of special interest are indicated in these texts by the frequency of references cited within those topics of special interest. An operational definition of what is a “classic” reference to the field is offered by tallying those reference cited by all text authors.

Abstract:
AbstractAs a means of transmitting not only data but also code encapsulated within functions, higher-order channels provide an advanced form of task parallelism in parallel computations. In the presence of mutable references, however, they pose a safety problem because references may be transmitted to remote threads where they are no longer valid. This paper presents an ML-like parallel language with type-safe higher-order channels. By type safety, we mean that no value written to a channel contains references, or equivalently, that no reference escapes via a channel from the thread where it is created. The type system uses a typing judgment that is capable of deciding whether the value to which a term evaluates contains references or not. The use of such a typing judgment also makes it easy to achieve another desirable feature of channels, channel locality, that associates every channel with a unique thread for serving all values addressed to it. Our type system permits mutable references in sequential computations and also ensures that mutable references never interfere with parallel computations. Thus, it provides both flexibility in sequential programming and ease of implementing parallel computations.

Abstract:
A wide range of medical devices have significant electronic components. Compared to open-source medical software, open (and open-source) electronic hardware has been less published in peer-reviewed literature. In this review, we explore the developments, significance, and advantages of using open platform electronic hardware for medical devices. Open hardware electronics platforms offer not just shorter development times, reduced costs, and customization; they also offer a key potential advantage which current commercial medical devices lack—seamless data sharing for machine learning and artificial intelligence. We explore how various electronic platforms such as microcontrollers, single board computers, field programmable gate arrays, development boards, and integrated circuits have been used by researchers to design medical devices. Researchers interested in designing low cost, customizable, and innovative medical devices can find references to various easily available electronic components as well as design methodologies to integrate those components for a successful design.

Abstract:
Most of the previous revolutions in the post-Soviet sphere were concentrated around two dimensions: reluctance to challenge abuses of power and the will to redirect the external trajectory. The Armenian Velvet Revolution marked the change of the axiology of revolution. Civil disobedience was only focused on the corrupt political system based on clientelism and patronage. It was not addressing any issues related to the international situation. In statements, activists avoided references to foreign policy and change of geopolitical direction. The purpose of the paper is to identify convergent and separate features characterizing the Velvet Revolution in comparison with breakthroughs classified as revolutions in the post-Soviet space after 1989. The research question is how the Armenian Velvet Revolution’s features stand out from previous revolutionary changes of power in the post-Soviet space, and to what extent they are convergent. The theoretical framework is based on multi-dimensional academic reflection on the factors characterizing particular revolutionary waves in post-Soviet space. Using comparatively the rich achievements of study on the Autumn of Nations, Color Revolutions, and Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity, this essay aims to inscribe the unique and modular factors characterizing the Armenian Velvet Revolution into a broader spectrum of theoretical and practical considerations on political breakthroughs in post-Soviet space.

Smith, Daniel Wayne. "Preserving Unique References in Java Lists." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36343.

Abstract:
The Java collection framework introduces aliasing when objects are added to and accessed from collections. This thesis describes a list component implemented in Java that preserves unique references of objects in the list, thereby avoiding undesired aliasing. We compared the running time of our list with three other lists from Java collections (Java collection framework, Google, and Functional Java) in five different applications. We found that the performance of our list was usually slightly slower than the performance of the Java list, but often much faster than the Google and Functional Java lists. We also compared the reasoning complexity of our list with Javaâ s list by creating tracing tables for a method from a towers-of-Hanoi application and comparing the number of tokens in the table using our list with the number of tokens in the table using the Java list. We found that the number of tokens in the tracing table using the Java list was much higher than the number of tokens in the table using our list. We argue that this result will occur in any table for applications that use mutable list objects.

Abstract:
View. They empirically occur as labels, shops-signs, tiles of pictures, naming phrases of sculptures and son on. Tome i its divided intoi two parts. The first 150 pages draw the empirical limits of the field and set up the elements of a labelling theory; labelling is defined as a specific semio-linguistic process through which an object can be identified, in prasentia, by a written linguistic phrase or expression located next to it. The second part of tome 1 (p. 151 up to p. 678) is devoted to an empirical validation of the labelling theory thourgh a data base composed of 3000 painting titles (from the 13 th c. To the 20th c). Thee main results can be drawn. On theoretical grounds, a new pattern, termed a scripto-visual frame, is needed so that the title formulas can be explained as non-related to either sentences or lexical forms. On a descriptive level, specific uses such as limited determination, aspectuo-temporal values and visual characterisation are to be noticed. Finally from a historical point of view, titles appear to be the last step of the process referring to paintings as proper names do to particulars; the previous step is that of the legend way whereby they are pointed to without being named during this era of pictorial reproduction of "realit", the referring legend has the effect of bringing together the picture and iyts referent. Tome ii contains the corpus, completed by reproductions of paintings. Some results of that specific contribution concerning the uniquely naming process in painting matters can be extended to any other uniquely naming process

This research aims to understand how changes in the context of health protection and agriculture inspection between 1996 and 2014 relate to the Idaf identity configurations expressed by managers in this context. It is a qualitative research that seek to describe the identity processes of the organization by an interpretive look at understanding the symbolic relations that permeate this organization, observed in speeches of the subjects. For data collection were used desk research and semi-structured individual interviews. Interviews were conducted with five subjects of the organization in the months of September and October 2014. The analysis method was content analysis (KRIPPENDORFF, 1990) that investigates textual data through techniques to understand them with their meanings, references , valuations and intentions. It was intended to contribute to this study, for understanding the organizational identity in a public organization in the context of health protection and agricultural inspection. The results showed the Idaf as unique and distinct from other organizations and how this identification is related to change in agricultural context.

Kadmon, Nirit. "On unique and non-unique reference and asymmetric quantification." 1987. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI8805935.

Full text
Abstract:
The view that definite noun phrases are systematically accompanied by uniqueness implications is defended in this dissertation against rivals and counterexamples, with emphasis on the precise understanding of the phenomenon and factors which have obscured its generality. It is argued that all definites are 'unique', in a sense defined within the Kamp/Heim framework on the basis of discourse representations containing implicated, accommodated and contextually supplied material. Definites are contrasted with indefinites, including indefinites with numeral determiners. In quantified sentences, a definite may be unique relative to another element. For example, the use of the definite pronoun in Every chess set comes with a spare pawn. It is taped to the top of the box implies that there is a unique spare pawn per chess set. It is argued that uniqueness depends on the configuration of quantifiers and their scope; roughly, a definite A is unique relative to an element B if it has narrow scope relative to B. A general theory of uniqueness is proposed, and applied to a variety of examples. Then the 'asymmetric' reading of quantified sentences is discussed; that is, for example, the reading of Most women who have a dog are happy which is false in the situation where out of ten women, one has 50 dogs and is happy, and the other nine have exactly one dog each and are miserable. The asymmetric reading is not captured by the unselective quantification found in the Kamp/Heim system. An analysis of this reading is proposed, which finds support in the behavior of definite NPs in 'donkey' sentences, and which derives a cluster of properties of the reading from the asymmetry inherent to scope relations. Thus both uniqueness and the asymmetric reading are seen to reflect scope relations. The combined understanding and analyses of these phenomena are shown to reveal and explain systematic patterns in the behavior of donkey sentences, and illuminate puzzling speakers' judgements concerning these sentences.

Abstract:
Abstract This research report investigates the role of the musical instrument, Marimba Lumina in the post-electronic music compositions by Lukas Ligeti, musician, performer and composer. Innovative works require new kinds of interfaces and instruments for new modes of musical expression. Post-electronic composers can now redefine their music and find a new musical identity through the advancement of technology. Although tradition has always been a key influence on the expressive level of composers, new trends and technologies have helped to catapult them to greater heights of achievement. In this research, through the examination of various musical parameters that define and characterise Ligeti’s compositions performed on the Marimba Lumina, the application of these parameters will be explored in the context of computer-based music. Technology has had an enormous impact on the world of music creating new dimensions and possibilities to the extent that composers have virtually limitless avenues of self expression through their music. This research report also addresses the issues surrounding “laptop musicians1”. 1 Musicians that perform music by pushing computer buttons

The current economic strategy of the European Union - the Europe 2020 Strategy - has defined five measurable Headline Targets to enhance economic growth and allowed the Member States to set their own national numerical values for these targets. This thesis analyses quality of this target setting process. First, it tries to figure out whether the targets have been set better than in the preceding Lisbon Strategy. Second, it examines whether the National Targets have been defined clearly and unequivocally. Third and the most important, based on original empirical analysis, the thesis evaluates whether the National Targets have been determined reasonably with respect to general capacities of individual European economies. The main results reveal that some learning from the Lisbon Strategy has been made, but the quality of the National Targets is insufficient and should be increased. Abstract:
The importance of place—as a unique spatial identity—has been recognized since antiquity. Ancient references to the ‘genius loci’, or spirit of place, evoked not only the location of a distinct atmosphere or environment, but also the protection of this location, and implicitly, its making and construction. This volume examines the concept of place as it relates to architectural production and building knowledge in early modern Europe (1400-1800). The places explored in the book’s ten essays take various forms, from an individual dwelling to a cohesive urban development to an extensive political territory. Within the scope of each study, the authors draw on primary source documents and original research to demonstrate the distinctive features of a given architectural place, and how these are related to a geographic location, social circumstances, and the contributions of individual practitioners. The essays underscore the distinct techniques, practices and organizational structures by which physical places were made in the early modern period.

Abstract:
AbstractHow to integrate mathematics, psychology, pedagogy and practical teaching within the didactics of mathematics in order to get unified specific theories and conceptions of mathematics teaching? This problem—relevant for theoretical and empirical studies in mathematics education as well as for teacher training—is considered in the present paper. The author suggests an approach which is based on teaching units (Unterrichtsbeispiele). Suitable teaching units incorporate mathematical, pedagogical, psychological and practical aspects in a natural way and therefore they are a unique tool for integration. It is the aim of the present paper to describe an approach to bridging the often deplored gap between didactics of mathematics teaching on one hand and teaching practice, mathematics, psychology, and pedagogy on the other hand. In doing so I relate the various aspects of mathematics education to one another. My interest is equally directed to teacher training and to the methodology of research in mathematics education. The structure of the paper is as follows. First I would like to make reference to and characterize an earlier discussion on the status and role of mathematics education; secondly, I will talk about problems of integration which naturally arise when mathematics education is viewed as an interdisciplinary field of study. The fourth and essential section will show how to tackle these problems by means of teaching units. The present approach is based on a certain conception of mathematics teaching which is necessary for appreciating Sect. 4. This conception is therefore explained in Sect. 3.

Abstract:
AbstractThe concept of surgical margins was born a long time ago but still lacks a univocal and sound understanding. The current biological rationale behind the recommendations on margins management relies on two pillars: (1) the observation that groups of cancer cells can leave the macroscopic tumor and disseminate throughout adjacent tissues with different degrees of aggressiveness; (2) the belief that removal of all (or most of) cancer cells can cure the patient. However, this background is undermined by some pieces of evidence. For instance, it has been proven that tissues surrounding cancer often bear precancerous traits, which means that cutting through non-cancerous tissues does not equate to cut through healthy tissues. The head and neck exquisitely poses a number of challenges in the achievement of negative margins, with special reference to anatomical complexity, high density in relevant structures, and unique histological heterogeneity of cancers. Currently, intraoperative margins evaluation relies on surgeons’ sight, palpation, ability to map tumor extension on imaging, and knowledge of anatomy, with some optical imaging technologies aiding the delineation of the mucosal margins of excision. Frozen sections are currently used to intraoperatively evaluate margins, yet with debate on whether and how this practice should be performed. Future perspectives on improvement of margins control are threefold: research is oriented towards refinements of understanding of cancers local progression, implementation of technologies to intraoperatively render tumor extension, and employment of optical imaging modalities capable of detecting foci of residual tumor in the surgical bed.

Abstract:
Identifiers (or names) are created by a declaration. They are referenced by various statements. EXPRESS does not require declaration before reference, therefore the reference can come after or before the place where the declaration is given. The usual way of referring to a thing is to simply write its name. However, there are situations where a more elaborate reference — called a qualified reference — is needed. Some qualified names can be quite long. The Alias statement (13.2) can be used to simplify matters when the qualified name gets too clumsy to work with conveniently. A scope is a region of the source within which a name is visible. References to a name are legal in its scope but are illegal outside it. Scopes can be thought of as boxes nested within other boxes as illustrated by Figure 12.1. EXPRESS assumes that there is a giant box called the ‘universe’ which surrounds every other scope. All of the standard identifiers (Integer, Real... Abs, Usedln...) and all schemas are in the scope of the universe. As an example Figure 12.2 gives an inventory of the full names of the things shown in Figure 12.1 (but note that ‘universe’ is never specifically written). Although it may seem that some of the ‘given’ names are duplicates (AnAttribute for instance), when the full name is written out every name is unique. Name uniqueness is a requirement of EXPRESS. Peer names are visible to one another. The picture shows peer names as the ones inside the same box. The same effect is shown in the inventory by tracing common name elements from left to right until a name difference is found. Peer names are the ones at the level where the difference occurs. Visibility to other names starts at some point in the name chain. Every name along the path (reading from right to left) and their peers are visible. In the picture, start inside some box and jump outside. The names in that outer box are visible. Then jump to the next outer box, etc., until there are no more outer boxes. As an example, ASchema. AnotherEntity. AnotherAttribute (‘Universe’ will no longer be used) can ‘see’ the things shown in Figure 12.3. In fact, references can to their simple names can be used.

Abstract:
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is generally recognized as the most informative imaging technology for assessing patients with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathies. Beyond its standard-of-reference-quality quantitative data, it provides unique information on myocardial tissue characteristics that allows for the detection, localization, and spatial quantification of myocardial oedema, fibrosis, and infiltration. This not only provides an accurate discrimination of non-ischaemic from ischaemic myocardial disease, but also has led to very specific diagnostic criteria for certain cardiomyopathies (e.g. myocarditis, cardiac amyloidosis, myocardial iron overload, stress-induced cardiomyopathy Takotsubo, or Fabry’s disease). Furthermore, CMR provides criteria for acute versus remote injury and, depending on the clinical context, evidence for myocardial inflammation such as in viral myocarditis. The chapter presents and discusses the important aspects of the clinical application of CMR in non-ischaemic cardiomyopathies with a focus on useful scan protocols, typical findings, added diagnostic value, and limitations. New approaches such as cardiac T1 mapping and T2 mapping are included. Key references on the current state-of-the-art use of CMR are provided and discussed.

In 2011, 15 families of the Burmese refugee community on Buffalo’s Westside collectively purchased a vacant house in Buffalo at 349 Plymouth Ave. They wanted to convert the house to a Buddhist temple and residence for three monks. ‘Temple in a House’ is an adaptive project designed in collaboration with local architect and artist Dennis Maher (University at Buffalo), which presented a significant challenge: that of trying to reconcile a very radical change of program, use, and cultural references. Beyond the project’s unique socio-economic characteristics pertaining to Buffalo, this project has global implications. Changing world demographics, as a result of different economic and migratory dynamics, are increasingly asking designers to negotiate complex cultural, social, religious, and economic systems.

Abstract:
From 1962 Lancashire, in England, became the focus of a major renewal scheme: the creation of a ‘super-city’ for 500,000 people. The last and largest New Town designated under the 1965 Act, Central Lancashire New Town (CLNT) differed from other New Towns. Although influenced by the ideals and example of Garden City model, its master plan followed new and proposed infrastructure to connect the sub-region’s poly-centricity. By unifying and expanding existing towns and settlements it aimed to generate prosperity on a sub-regional scale using the New Towns Act, rather than creating a single new self-sufficient urban development. CLNT’s scale, poly-centricity and theoretical growth made it unique compared to other new town typologies and, although not realised, its planning can be traced across Lancashire’s urban and rural landscape by communication networks and city-scale public and civic buildings. With reference to diagrams for the British New Towns of Hook, Milton Keynes and Civilia, this paper will contextualize and evaluate CLNT’s theoretical layout and its proposed expansion based on interdependent townships, districts and ‘localities’. The paper will conclude by comparing CLNT’s theoretical diagram with its proposed application and adaptation to the sub-region’s topographical physical setting. Abstract:
Recently, the big data can be employed as the economical ship operating or evaluation of ship performance conditions. However, such data cannot be easily obtained and analyzed for every ship. In this case, for example, an evaluation of ship performance during operation is usually dependent on ship owner’s experience. The time-dependent ship performance is an essential topic for ship owners because if they realize their current ship performance, they can implement something such as hull or propeller cleaning for their economical operation. This study is focused on the usage of noon report data rather than the big data due to their obtainability. Usually, such data are considered as references because different ship operational condition and environmental condition obscure current ship performance. However, our unique approach, which is used integrally the noon report data such as BHP, propeller revolution and fuel oil consumption, ship sea trial data and propeller performance, can be evaluated ship performance during ship in service. The analyzed output data can be produced as increasing of ship resistance (delta Rw) versus ship performance efficiency, fuel oil consumption (ton per day) or sea margin. Under this output conditions, it can be comparable at same conditions even though the conditions of operations are different. Therefore, this analyzed data has a potential ability to have a look at ship performance conditions during ship in service. The purpose of this paper is to introduce our unique approach using noon data for time-dependent ship performance and then discuss the verification of this approach. As the case study, the noon report data for Japanese domestic bulker was chosen and the ship performance was evaluated in terms of different points of views. It was done comparing the conditions of before and after dry dock to evaluate our approach. In addition, the potential application of this approach will be discussed in this paper.

Abstract:
A unique type of self-protective Ultra-High Pressure Vessel (UHPV) cylinder with helically wound Flat Steel Ribbons (FSR) is proposed. The shielding properties of its self-protection in the hoop and axial directions of a FSR cylinder in the case of fracture failure, as well as quick-actuating of the tooth-locked end closure of this new vessel structure are both expounded. Based on its axial strength, a formula of the ultimate load-carrying capability of FSR layers is derived. The shielding function and self-protective capability of FSR layers to the UHPV cylinder are analyzed quantitatively in detail, and a design criterion is also defined. According to the formula and the design criterion defined in this paper, the predicted ultimate load-carrying capability of the FSR layers is 48.3% higher than that in previous references. Results from burst tests of 6 model vessels show that the brittle failure morphology of UHPV cylinders are changed with FSR layers and the potential hazard of failure of the UHPV is reduced. In addition, the cross fracture of the UHPV cylinder is shielded effectively and the derived formulation on the ultimate load-carrying capability of FSR layers is reasonable. UHPV cylinders designed according to the formula and the criterion can use much fewer FSR layers with the same shielding capability.

The land acquisition and real estate development have caused rapid disappearance and decline of a large number of traditional villages, resulting in "urban villages" in China. They seem chaotic, but contain rich and colorful social life. The living environment is really harsh, but people always maintain close relationship with each other. They are different from neither the modern urban nor traditional villages, but they have their own unique vitality. Such heterogeneous space is always a symbol of historical change and cultural collision which, according to the French philosopher Michel Foucault, can be called Heterotopias. In order to study this heterotopic phenomenon, the triangular area of Guandongdian district in Beijing has been chosen as the object of this case study. With the in-depth investigation of interviews, observation, statistics and sketches, this paper is trying to interpret the characteristics of the heterotopic state of the urban village from three aspects of social form, urban morphology and architectural feature. Eventually, in order to keep the complexity and diversification of urban village, several strategies are put forward for reference to future transforming practice. References Foucault, M. Abstract:
The efficiency of a turbine stage is impacted by a number of factors such as the component design philosophy, operating environment, leakage flow and its interaction with the main gas flow path. When looking at improving a turbine stage performance, there is a natural tendency amidst the designers to look into the factors listed above. Every engine manufacture has a unique style of component design philosophy and hence there are fewer opportunities to radically change the design. On the other hand, the operating environment or operating conditions are usually becoming more challenging. Hence, component designers typically look for opportunities to reduce the leakage or to reduce the losses due to interactive effect of the leakage with the gas path. The rim seal flow and its interaction with the gas path has been of interest for the past few decades and many studies have been carried out to understand the impact of cavity geometry, leakage flows and the ingestion of the hot gas into the rim seal cavities. The rim seal cavities functionally act as a buffer cavity to dilute and dampen the effect of the hot gas ingested into the secondary air flow path and to prevent the discs from being exposed to ingested hot gas. The successful function of the rim seal cavity depends on multiple factors like rotor-stator axial clearance, cavity volume, cavity shape, cavity approach to the gas path and its interface, in addition to the leakage flow into the main flow path. The present paper aims at providing a review of a typical rim seal cavity used in the High Pressure Turbine based on systematic CFD studies of the rim seal cavities. While the paper does not present validation data for the approach, the authors attempt to provide references to specific design aspects that are already available in the literature, which are usually less noticed.

Abstract:
Abstract When an aged mooring system seeks a life extension, it is necessary to assess the remaining fatigue life of the corroded mooring chain. This paper summarizes the results of fatigue tests performed on mooring chain samples retrieved from six different fields in West Africa and North Sea. The impacts of corrosion on fatigue life on the samples were researched. The tests were managed under a Joint Development Project, “Fatigue of Corroded Chains (FoCCs JDP)”. The objectives of the JDP are (1) to derive a methodology for assessing the remaining fatigue life of corroded chain, (2) to develop guidance for performing reliable FEA of chain links to assess remaining fatigue life, and (3) to provide more rational basis to improve industry guidance on mooring line replacement criteria for life extension. Fatigue test procedure was defined by the fifteen (15) participating members. The procedure specified the testing parameters, including mean tension, tension range, and test frequency. Six sets of fatigue tests have been completed in seawater with the number of cycles to failure recorded. These chain samples were retrieved from floating production and storage units, e.g. FPSOs and FSUs, that were still in service. Fatigue data obtained from the tests were plotted against the design SN curves and results from fatigue testing of new chain. It was found that most of these samples have limited amount of fatigue capacity remained. Most interesting finding is that the sharpness of the surface feature on the corroded chain link has a significant impact on the remaining fatigue life. Another interesting finding is that the surface feature created by corrosion can be quite distinct and unique depending on the geophysical locations where the sample came from. These findings and test results may serve as references for life extension assessment of an aged mooring system.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a novel, practical, and theoretically sound kinematic control strategy for redundant serial manipulators. This strategy yields repeatability in the joint space of a redundant serial manipulator whose end effector undergoes some general cyclic type motion. This is accomplish by defining a potential energy function that is based on springs being theoretically or conceptually located in the joints of the manipulator (torsional springs for revolute joints, translational springs for prismatic joints). Previous researchers have also minimized potential energy functions to solve the inverse kinematic problem for redundant serial manipulators. However, to the authors’ knowledge, the new strategy is the first to include the free angles of torsional springs and the free lengths of translational springs. This is important because it provides a meaningful reference for zero potential energy i.e. when all joints are at their free angles or free lengths. This reference for zero potential energy ensures the repeatability in the joint space of a redundant serial manipulator whose end effector undergoes a cyclic-type motion. Choices for the free angle and torsional stiffness of a joint (or the free length and translational stiffness) are made based upon the mechanical limits of the joint. For instance, the free angle of a joint is that angle which is midway between joint limits. Joint stiffnesses are chosen so that the most dexterous joint is the most pliable, and so that the least dexterous joint is the stiffest. This strategy ensures that joints of the manipulator are kept away from their respective joint limits.

Abstract:
Feature extraction algorithms are routinely leveraged to extract building footprints and road networks into vector format. When used in conjunction with high resolution remotely sensed imagery, machine learning enables the automation of such feature extraction workflows. However, many of the feature extraction algorithms currently available have not been thoroughly evaluated in a scientific manner within complex terrain such as the cities of developing countries. This report details the performance of three automated feature extraction (AFE) datasets: Ecopia, Tier 1, and Tier 2, at extracting building footprints and roads from high resolution satellite imagery as compared to manual digitization of the same areas. To avoid environmental bias, this assessment was done in two different regions of the world: Maracay, Venezuela and Niamey, Niger. High, medium, and low urban density sites are compared between regions. We quantify the accuracy of the data and time needed to correct the three AFE datasets against hand digitized reference data across ninety tiles in each city, selected by stratified random sampling. Within each tile, the reference data was compared against the three AFE datasets, both before and after analyst editing, using the accuracy assessment metrics of Intersection over Union and F1 Score for buildings and roads, as well as Average Path Length Similarity (APLS) to measure road network connectivity. It was found that of the three AFE tested, the Ecopia data most frequently outperformed the other AFE in accuracy and reduced the time needed for editing.

Abstract:
The coordination of transportation and land use (also known as “smart growth”) has been a long-standing goal for planning and engineering professionals, but to this day it remains an elusive concept to realize. Leaving us with this central question -- how can we best achieve transportation and land use coordination at the corridor level? In response, this report provides a review of literature and practice related to sustainability, livability, and equity (SLE) with a focus on corridor-level planning. Using Caltrans’ Corridor Planning Process Guide and Smart Mobility Framework as guideposts, this report also reviews various principles, performance measures, and place typology frameworks, along with current mapping and planning support tools (PSTs). The aim being to serve as a guidebook that agency staff can use for reference, synergizing planning insights from various data sources that had not previously been brought together in a practical frame. With this knowledge and understanding, a key section provides a discussion of tools and metrics and how they can be used in corridor planning. For illustration purposes, this report uses the Smart Mobility Calculator (https://smartmobilitycalculator. netlify.app/), a novel online tool designed to make key data easily available for all stakeholders to make better decisions. For more information on this tool, see https://transweb.sjsu.edu/research/1899-Smart-Growth-Equity-Framework-Tool. The Smart Mobility Calculator is unique in that it incorporates statewide datasets on urban quality and livability which are then communicated through a straightforward visualization planners can readily use. Core sections of this report cover the framework and concepts upon which the Smart Mobility Calculator is built and provides examples of its functionality and implementation capabilities. The Calculator is designed to complement policies to help a variety of agencies (MPOs, DOTs, and local land use authorities) achieve coordination and balance between transportation and land use at the corridor level.

Abstract:
Symphonies Reframed recreates symphonies as chamber music. The project aims to capture the features that are unique for chamber music, at the juncture between the “soloistic small” and the “orchestral large”. A new ensemble model, the “triharmonic ensemble” with 7-9 musicians, has been created to serve this purpose. By choosing this size range, we are looking to facilitate group interplay without the need of a conductor. We also want to facilitate a richness of sound colours by involving piano, strings and winds. The exact combination of instruments is chosen in accordance with the features of the original score. The ensemble setup may take two forms: nonet with piano, wind quartet and string quartet (with double bass) or septet with piano, wind trio and string trio. As a group, these instruments have a rich tonal range with continuous and partly overlapping registers. This paper will illuminate three core questions: What artistic features emerge when changing from large orchestral structures to mid-sized chamber groups? How do the performers reflect on their musical roles in the chamber ensemble? What educational value might the reframing unfold? Since its inception in 2014, the project has evolved to include works with vocal, choral and soloistic parts, as well as sonata literature. Ensembles of students and professors have rehearsed, interpreted and performed our transcriptions of works by Brahms, Schumann and Mozart. We have also carried out interviews and critical discussions with the students, on their experiences of the concrete projects and on their reflections on own learning processes in general. Chamber ensembles and orchestras are exponents of different original repertoire. The difference in artistic output thus hinges upon both ensemble structure and the composition at hand. Symphonies Reframed seeks to enable an assessment of the qualities that are specific to the performing corpus and not beholden to any particular piece of music. Our transcriptions have enabled comparisons and reflections, using original compositions as a reference point. Some of our ensemble musicians have had first-hand experience with performing the original works as well. Others have encountered the works for the first time through our productions. This has enabled a multi-angled approach to the three central themes of our research. This text is produced in 2018.
