Akin, Alexander. East Asian Cartographic Print Culture. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463726122.

Full text
Abstract:
Alexander Akin examines how the expansion of publishing in the late Ming dynasty prompted changes in the nature and circulation of cartographic materials in East Asia. Focusing on mass-produced printed maps, East Asian Cartographic Print Culture: The Late Ming Publishing Boom and its Trans-Regional Connections investigates a series of pathbreaking late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century works in genres including geographical education, military affairs, and history, analysing how maps achieved unprecedented penetration among published materials, even in the absence of major theoretical or technological changes like those that transformed contemporary European cartography. By examining contemporaneous developments in neighboring Chos.n Korea and Japan, this book demonstrates the crucial importance of considering the East Asian sphere in this period as a network of communication and publication, rather than as discrete national units with separate cartographic histories. It also reexamines the Jesuit printing of maps on Ming soil within the broader context of the local cartographic publishing boom and its trans-regional repercussions.

Full text
Abstract:
Care for the critically ill cardiovascular patients and their families requires a unique environment that is structurally different from other clinical units. Coronary care units were introduced in the 1960s for the main purpose of prevention and prompt treatment of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias related to acute myocardial infarction. Since then, major progress in cardiology in general and acute cardiac care, in particular, dictated a major change in the structure and organization of these units, symbolically expressed in the new title of ‘intensive cardiac care unit’. Contemporary intensive cardiac care units receive older and more complex patients, often with multiple comorbidities and diverse diagnoses. The modern intensive cardiac care unit incorporates sophisticated monitoring and up-to-date equipment to meet the changing needs of the patient with cardiovascular disease requiring critical care. The intensive cardiac care unit operates in the centre of the hospital’s cardiology service, receiving patients from the mobile care unit (directly or via an ST elevation myocardial infarction network), the emergency department, and other wards, including coronary, structural, and electrophysiology intervention laboratories and operating rooms. Patients are usually unstable and require immediate full attention by highly trained medical and nursing staff. The 2005 recommendations for the structure, organization, and operations of the intensive cardiac care unit were issued by Hasin et al. for the Working Group of Acute Cardiac Care of the European Society of Cardiology, which serves as basis for this chapter. The chapter will focus on the requirements for staffing, training, and accreditation, as well as the structure organization and equipment of the intensive and intermediate cardiac care units.

Abstract:
Before being able to correctly classify carbon units (the object of trade in emissions trading schemes) under international economic law, their inherent qualities and characteristics need to be understood. This requires a factual assessment of their qualities and characteristics, which will provide the evidence necessary to determine their proper legal classification under international economic law. In particular, Chapter 3 considers the historical and policy origins of emissions trading schemes and the key attributes and nature of carbon units, such as how they are created, what they represent, how they may be used, and how they derive value. The legal classification of carbon units under the different domestic jurisdictions is also surveyed.

Abstract:
This chapter breaks dissenting church practice down into basic units in order to analyse the basis for understanding the ‘protean organizational creativity and adaptability’ of dissenting Protestantism. The chapter uses this framework to point to drivers for ‘malformation’ and some of the less fortunate outcomes of dissenting change and expansion. The denomination, it notes, is one of the most distinctive forms of D/dissenting trans-congregational organization, while the development of trans-congregational organizations has in part been driven by a distinctive understanding of the catholicity and unity of the church, and of the authority (and thus exercise of power) that most faithfully enables fuller embodiment of catholicity and unity so understood. Another key element has been the emphasis Protestants place upon personal conscience, and so individual choice. While there has been a vast proliferation of dissenting protestant forms, the basic building blocks are recognizably there, providing the basis for continuing mutual recognition and action.

Higginson, Irene J. Palliative care delivery models. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199656097.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
Palliative care is not integrated into health care in many countries, with a network of services, a medical speciality or sub-speciality, and academic departments. A common distinction exists between generalist and specialist palliative care. Specialist service are dedicated to palliative care, have staff trained in it, and in addition to providing clinical care, engage in education, research, and the measurement of outcomes. Moreover, the patients they care for have more complex needs. Models of service delivery include inpatient palliative care units and hospices, consultation teams (at home, in the community, and in hospitals), day care units, and outpatient services. New models include short-term palliative care services, working in an integrated way with other services. Principles common to all services include a holistic approach (physical, emotional, social, and spiritual), considering the patient and family as the unit of care, and with impeccable attention to listening, communication, and individualized care.

Munro, James. Emissions Trading Schemes under International Economic Law. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198828709.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book assesses whether—and how—emissions trading schemes are subject to international economic law. Through an analysis of trade and investment treaties and related jurisprudence, it argues that the objects of trade in these schemes, namely carbon units (also known as emissions permits or carbon credits), are capable of being legally characterized as ‘goods’, ‘services’, ‘financial services’, and ‘investments’ under international economic law. The sui generis properties of carbon units—such as their intangibility, their degree of permanence, their relationship to an economic activity performed, and their use as a regulatory instrument—make this a particularly complex question. Having ascertained whether and how carbon units are regulated in this regard, this book undertakes a comparative analysis of numerous emissions trading schemes and uncovers a raft of design elements affecting trade and investment in carbon units that could be impugned under international economic law. In particular, it demonstrates how all of the major schemes—from the nascent schemes in China, South Korea, and Ontario to the more established schemes in the European Union, Switzerland, New Zealand, Norway, California, and Quebec—engage in violations of international economic law that are, in many cases, unlikely to be justified under environmental or other exceptions or exemptions. Not only do these conclusions have implications for the relationship between the international economic and international climate regimes but, more broadly, these conclusions interrogate the efficacy of international economic law for covering market-based mechanisms designed to manage environmental problems. They also provide guidance to policy-makers seeking to inoculate their emissions trading schemes from legal challenges under international trade and investment treaties.
