Dessì, Giuseppe, and Mario Pinna. Tre amici tra la Sardegna e Ferrara. Edited by Costanza Chimirri. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-478-3.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This personal and frank book offers an insider's view on the violent confrontations in Charlottesville during the “summer of hate.” Blending memoir, courtroom drama, and a consideration of the unhealed wound of racism in our society, the book shines a light on the conflict between the value of free speech and the protection of civil rights. The author has spent his career in the thick of these tempestuous and fraught issues, from acting as lead counsel in a famous Supreme Court decision challenging Virginia's law against burning crosses, to serving as co-counsel in a libel suit brought by a fraternity against Rolling Stone magazine for publishing an article alleging that one of the fraternity's initiation rituals included gang rape. The author has also been active as a university leader, serving as dean of three law schools and president of one and railing against hate speech and sexual assault on US campuses. Well before the tiki torches cast their ominous shadows across the nation, the city of Charlottesville sought to relocate the Unite the Right rally; the author was approached to represent the alt-right groups. Though the author declined, he came to wonder what his history of advocacy had wrought. Feeling unsettlingly complicit, the author joined the Charlottesville Task Force, and realized that the events that transpired there had meaning and resonance far beyond a singular time and place. Why, he wonders, has one of our foundational rights created a land in which such tragic clashes happen all too frequently?

Mazer, Sharon. Professional Wrestling. University Press of Mississippi, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.14325/mississippi/9781496826862.001.0001.

Abstract:
Professional wrestling is one of the most popular performance practices in the United States and around the world, drawing millions of spectators to live events and televised broadcasts. The displays of violence, simulated and actual, may be the obvious appeal, but that is just the beginning. Fans debate performance choices with as much energy as they argue about their favorite wrestlers. The ongoing scenarios and presentations of manly and not so-manly characters—from the flamboyantly feminine to the hypermasculine—simultaneously celebrate and critique, parody and affirm, the American dream and the masculine ideal. Sharon Mazer looks at the world of professional wrestling from a fan’s-eye-view high in the stands and from ringside in the wrestlers’ gym. She investigates how performances are constructed and sold to spectators, both on a local level and in the “big leagues” of the WWF/E. She shares a close-up view of a group of wrestlers as they work out, get their faces pushed to the mat as part of their initiation into the fraternity of the ring, and dream of stardom. In later chapters, Mazer explores professional wrestling’s carnivalesque presentation of masculinities ranging from the cute to the brute, as well as the way in which the performances of women wrestlers often enter into the realm of pornographic. Finally, she explores the question of the “real” and the “fake” as the fans themselves confront it. First published in 1998, this new edition of Professional Wrestling: Sport and Spectacle both preserves the original’s snapshot of the wrestling scene of the 1980s and 1990s and features an up-to-date perspective on the current state of play.

Idris, Murad. Assigning Symmetry. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190658014.003.0002.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 examines peace and war in Plato’s Laws. The dialogue’s speakers schematize war along an aesthetic pattern of symmetry, of polis against polis, person against person. These wars suggest an orderly universe. Ultimately, they locate peace in a different aesthetic—namely, the wholeness of the polis. The characters’ generalization of the polis as the primary site of well-ordered peace and war reflects anxieties about the polis’s finitude and about sources of disordering violence, notably Greek empires, Persia, and slave revolts. Second, Plato has his characters rehabilitate peace against arguments about its insufficiency by affirming that “war is for the sake of peace” and by appealing to peace’s parasitical structure: they insinuate fraternity, friendship, unity, security, and law into peace. In both Plato’s Laws and contemporaneous Athenian orations, these insinuates gain primacy over peace and facilitate war, including wars that govern the polis’s interior and police its surrounding neighbors.
