Abstract:
With the world's attention focused on the Persian Gulf crisis during the latter part of 1990 and the important part played in the situation by the United Nations Security Council, the 45th session of the UN General Assembly received very little attention in the press. In general, however, this post-Cold War session was considered a success, with an unprecedented number of resolutions adopted by consensus. As usual there were numerous resolutions of interest to the legal community.

Abstract:
This article deals with the analysis of the coverage of the Second Karabagh War by the influential British press. The mass media plays an important role in shaping or influencing people’s opinions on conflicts. The Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh Conflict is one of the conflicts that has got and presently is getting international press coverage. The news coverage has great importance in informing the world how Armenia invaded and destroyed Karabakh. And as the British press is enough influential in western countries and plays an important role in shaping the opinions, its coverage of the conflict is very important. Another important point is that the United Kingdom has long been one of the important geostrategic actors in the system of international relations. Although the UK's international influence is relatively weak in modern times, the country is still considered one of the world's power centers. The United Kingdom is also home to concepts such as parliamentarism, democracy, liberalism, and freedom of thought, speech, and press. All these factors make the analysis of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the British press especially relevant. One more important fact that is worth to mention that Azerbaijan is a country rich in oil and gas reserves. This fact draws the attention of many individuals and legal entities in the United Kingdom, including BP, to Azerbaijan. The economic interests of transnational companies coincide with the development trends of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and, as a result, take different directions. Taking this into account, Azerbaijan is objectively interested in gaining access to the political and intellectual elite of the United Kingdom through these individuals and legal entities. The links of transnational companies to Azerbaijan's national security are one of the subjects of research in the British press. This, in turn, increases the relevance of the study of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the British press.

While news of United Nations activities in Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia and other trouble spots has been in the press almost daily in recent months, information about internal UN developments are more difficult to come by. Fortunately, we have recently obtained documents on some organizational changes that affect the way the UN carries on its business and consequently the paper work documenting its activities. These changes involve several UN bodies, including the General Assembly and the Security Council, as well as other UN units. The number of developments is such that one cannot easily cover all the information in one column, and it has been decided to concentrate here on Security Council documentation.

Abstract:
This study hypothesizes that people under conditions of high censorship are likely to be more critical news consumers than people who believe they live in countries with a free and objective press. An experimental design using an international news story, attributed either to a high- or low-constraint source, was employed to compare the processing strategies of students from the United States and Indonesia. Findings suggest that audiences in censored news environments are more critical in distinguishing among news sources, but less critical of the unconstrained news itself.

Abstract:
This article provides an overview of the post-war contexts in which the Empire Press Union (EPU) became the Commonwealth Press Union and offers an assessment of its changing leadership and regular five-yearly conferences over the period 1946 to 1965. In particular, it examines the extent to which its pre-war hierarchies and British influence were sustained or modified with the decline of empire and the advent of international bodies such as the United Nations. It assesses the impact over two critical decades of the politics of decolonization and the changing roles of both the Australian and British sections of the organization within the new information order. How did these post-war changes and the power blocks which emerged affect the Press Union and its member countries and shape the ethos of the newly named Commonwealth Press Union thereafter? The article argues that the issues of press freedom and censorship are central to understanding the changing character of the organization and its emerging international profile by the mid-1960s. At a time when the United Nations proclaimed freedom of information to be a fundamental human right, the Press Union’s own libertarian rhetoric in defence of a free media sought to acknowledge the realities of decolonization, while retaining pre-war cultural values.

Abstract:
A comparative content analysis was conducted to determine whether the Russian (ITAR-TASS) and the American (UPI) wire service coverage of President Boris Yeltsin in the April 25, 1993, referendum was balanced and unbiased. Also, the amount of space dedicated to this topic was measured. Study results indicate that ITAR-TASS was more critical of Yeltsin prior to the referendum than UPI, and that there was no statistically important difference between the two wire services in their post referendum coverage. UPI articles were almost 30% longer than the ITAR-TASS articles. Each UPI article was on an average more than 220 words longer than were the ITAR-TASS articles.

Abstract:
The following research is a content analysis of 114 articles written by the American and British news media outlets in the first month following the BP Gulf oil spill in April 2010. The goal of the research was to identify any dominant frames evident in the reports and to compare the two countries to see if there was a difference in the dominant frames used. Positive, negative, and neutral tones were also evaluated to determine if there was a difference between the countries. The results show that both countries reports predominantly used an ecology and action frame, while British media outlets also used an economic frame. Both countries reported with primarily a negative and neutral tone. The implications of these findings for crisis communication managers are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The onset of democracy in South Africa in 1994 was accompanied by the rise in bids for, and the hosting of sports mega-events so as to accomplish national interests and goals. This was done with the purpose of rebranding the South African image to the international community through national and international campaigns that sought to highlight the country’s aspirant status as a rainbow nation and its pan-Africanist ideals. This study investigates how, as host for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, South Africa was reported on by two international online media newspapers, The New York Times (United States of America (USA)) and the Guardian (United Kingdom (UK)). The aim is to address an understudied aspect of South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ by reflecting systematically on the tone and content of international media portrayals of the event, both before and during the tournament. The study has two focuses. Firstly, it considers the motives for South Africa’s bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Secondly, it appraises the content and nature of reporting in the two overseas newspapers. The study uses a mix of secondary and primary sources, which include academic journals, books, websites, newspaper articles and government and the FIFA websites. The findings of this study suggest that the bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ was based on the country’s positive experience from hosting previous sports mega-events. Additionally, South Africa wanted to showcase its commercial maturity, its development of physical infrastructure, and the presence of human skills. The motives underpinning the bid aimed at dispelling and challenging international misconceptions of the African continent. The novelty of an African country bidding to stage and hosting a sport mega-event such as the FIFA World Cup™ resulted in the country gaining extensive international media coverage from The New York Times and the Guardian. The qualitative and quantitative content analysis from these two newspapers yielded some commonality and recurrence of words such as: “stadium”, “tickets”, ‘vuvuzela”, “crime”, and “security”. The differences between the two newspapers were minimal, supporting the liberal-pluralist theoretical claim that the media acts as an agenda setter, and in line with the Marxist theory of the ideological role of the media. Media coverage of sports mega-events is important and influential in determining the way in which the host country is branded, and future studies are necessary to address the

Abstract:
The newspaper «Le Monde» gives testimony, and is almost an actor, of the French Republic and its relations to foreign partners, the most important and influential of which is the United States of America. On one hand we will look into the image given by this country throughout « Le Monde »’s articles. We will consider how the United States are being covered, the way they relate to the rest of the world, the way their economy is valued, their level of development, the description of their society and their people, the image given by their democracy and their power. On the other hand we will watch the acquaintances between the United States and « Le Monde »’s editorial staff in a broad way, that is journalists and directors, from its foundation along the seventy following years and the various US administrations, which will show how the successive directors of the newspaper and the main journalists have had a genuine knowledge and esteem for this country. We will also learn the way America is covered through the designing of the newspaper. We will see how the editorial staff and the american authorities intermate, the way the latter greet and convey informations in an attempt to influence, openly or not, «Le Monde»’s protagonists ans beyond this, how the directors of the newspaper are inspired by the United States and the american press. Last but not least, we will look into the editorial line «Le Monde» choses to refer to the United States. Three major periods will emerge, the first one of which corresponds to Hubert Beuve-Méry’s management with a longlasting concern ever since for financial and editorial independance. His successors will try to keep on with his heritage while America is dividing the editorial staff. After the fall of the Berlin wall the new generation will modify the vision « Le Monde » had of America whereas the digital technologies start revolutionizing the media

Abstract:

The local authorities will also have to inform the foreign prisoner about such right, at the pisoners request, the authorities shall notify the detention to the consulate; besides authorize the access of the consular officers to the prisoner. This piece, analyzes the importance of this right, specially in the cases of death penalty; and describes the Consular Assistance institute, particularly, in respect to Mexican immigrants prisoners with a death penalty sentence in the United States. The relevance of the migratory phenomenon in Latin America, above all of the Mexicans in United States, makes this situation a vital example. It contributes, in this sense, with the discussion of international law in consular matters, as an instrument of citizenship and human rights achievement. It presents the International Court of Justice position - main international law judicial organism to solution of conflict between States - and, by comparison, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights position, in the regional sphere. Upon the analysis of International Law and the main contingent of migrants in the United States circumstances - the Latin-Americans, and among them, the Mexicans, this piece contributes to a better understanding of the integration process on the continent.

Abstract:
Relying on framing theory, this study used The New York Times to explore how Chinese news was depicted before, during and after the Beijing Summer Olympics. The research regarding how the Chinese government tried to leverage the Olympics to enhance its image is often deliberated. However, there have only been a 3 few studies on the evaluation of the effects the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games had on the image of China, as depicted by The New York Times. This study generated an understanding of the impact the presentations of The New York Times had on the soft power used by China through the Beijing Summer Olympic Games. The study examined how the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics were associated with the depiction of Chinese news in The New York Times during the pre-, mid-, and post-Olympics years. Specifically, world and business sections within The New York Times were mainly influenced by the effects of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In addition, there were no direct associations found between the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and how China was depicted photographically in The New York Times. In terms of the above factors; this study showed that China's national image did not improve in the New York Times after the 2008 Bejing Summer Olympic Games.

Manayeva, Natalie. "War of words: Framing of the United States in Selected Belarusian newspapers in 2009." 2010. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_gradthes/729.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the peculiarities of framing of the United States in selected Belarusian newspapers during first six months of the Obama administration. The concepts of anti-Americanism, authoritarian model of mass media and framing were chosen as a theoretical framework. This study was focused on the two main questions: first, what is the difference in how Belarusian state-run and independent newspapers frame the U.S., and second, what is the mechanism of creating negative image of the U.S. in Belarusian newspapers. In order to provide comprehensive answers to both questions the multi-method approach (involving methods of content and framing analysis) was chosen. As this study demonstrated, the state-run and independent newspapers present a very different image of the U.S.: state-run newspapers present the U.S. within a scope of strong negative frames. However, the picture in the independent newspapers is the opposite: out of four general frames three were positive and one was neutral-positive. The results of the content analysis showed that negative images of the United States do not necessarily have to be promoted through direct judgmental statements, but could rather be initiated by means of selecting certain negative facts for publication, often from unidentified sources. By concentrating their attention on crime, natural catastrophes, manipulating statistical data, omitting sources of information and selecting foreign experts who are critically inclined against the U.S media create a negative image of the United States.

Abstract:
AbstractThe author describes how New Zealand successfully eliminated the virus. ‘Go ahead, Go early’ was New Zealand’s moto. Strict border controls and high compliance with lockdown measures proved to be effective in controlling the pandemic.New Zealand’s official campaign ‘Unite Against COVID-19’, was later changed to ‘Unite for Recovery’ as the focus shifted from elimination to recovery. It has now changed back to ‘Unite for Recovery’ and this will remain until the international threat of COVID-19 is eliminated. The strategy was guided by science and data. The government relied on public health advice and evolving evidence. And, of course, leadership played a crucial role. The Prime Minister was resolute, confident, and pragmatic. The messages she re-iterated at the daily press conferences became catch phrases. Discipline came to the fore. People did not complain. They did not protest. They simply followed the rules, placing utmost trust in their government and its clear communications. Trust in political leaders and health experts was the key reason for the success of the program. And kindness was the Mantra!Amid the gloom and doom that our world is currently battling, God was spotted in New Zealand. Someone asked God ‘What are you doing?’ ‘Working from home, Bro’.

Abstract:
After Friday’s chaotic session, the United Women of the Tribune were determined to show that women could come together behind a core set of concerns, countering all the media representations of women fighting over microphones and exchanging barbs in press conferences. In an effort to counter the media image of women engaged in a “global catfight,” IWY tribune organizers staged a “unity panel” to showcase broad agreement on a range of issues. The plan backfired when Bolivian labor activist Domitila Barrios de Chungara confronted the panel chair, Mexican feminist Esperanza Brito de Martí, to insist that calls for unity were simply another form of imperialism.

Abstract:
As the IWY events neared their conclusion, chaos erupted in the NGO tribune when participants learned that the group representing the United Women of the Tribune, led by Betty Friedan, had attempted to represent the tribune to the intergovernmental conference. The Mexican press attributed the campaign entirely to Friedan, describing the group she “commands” as composed primarily of US women who sought to subordinate the more political concerns that preoccupied Third World women to the “secondary issues” that interested US women. A planned lunchtime forum for the United Women turned into a fracas that generated one of IWY’s most widely circulated images: an AP photograph of two women fighting over a microphone.

Abstract:
Thus far, comparatively little has been written on the ways in which Abu Dhabi's ruling elite-presiding over the resource-rich and technologically advanced United Arab Emirates- has been developing a range of new authoritarian tools to strengthen further its position. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources (including official government data, state press releases, judicial documentation, reports from international and non-governmental organizations, and articles in the international and local media), this chapter situates such developments within a suitably constructive framework of evolving Gulf authoritarianism, and seeks to provide a systematic and empirically rich analysis of some of these new authoritarian instruments. In particular, covering tools that could be considered both legally-based and more obviously coercive-and those that could be deemed both 'direct' and 'indirect'-the chapter reviews the recent tightening up of the UAE's media and free speech-related legislation; the apparent introduction of increasingly sophisticated cyber-surveillance techniques; and (most dramatically) the creation of a multi-layered and mostly foreign-staffed 'praetorian guard'. Finally, in the context of such tools being transferable or exportable to other authoritarian settings, the chapter considers the likely impact of the UAE's evolving authoritarianism elsewhere in the Gulf and the wider Arab region.

Abstract:
Harry Bridges, longtime leader of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU, representing Pacific Coast workers), was born in Australia in 1901 and came to the United States in 1920. Bridges brought Australian concepts of labor and politics to the docks of San Francisco in the early 1930s and injected Australian examples into his discussions of US working conditions and politics thereafter. When faced in 1939-1955 with deportation for being a Communist, he always attributed his political outlook to his early experiences in Australia. Bridges was frequently demonized in the US press, and a similar process occurred in Australia as the press there drew upon the US press in presenting Bridges. Just as business groups and conservatives in the United States saw Bridges as a dangerous radical, so too did conservative Australian politicians let their fear of Bridges carry them into a Quixotic campaign to prevent him from sneaking into their country. However, the Australian dockworkers’ union, the Waterfront Workers’ Federation, looked to Bridges and the ILWU as inspiration and exemplar, and Bridges and the ILWU worked closely with their counterparts in Australia. With the thaw in the Cold War aecline in anticommunist rhetoric in both nations, Bridges could be celebrated in both places as a “labor statesman.”

Abstract:
This essay analyzes the international history of the efforts of the Cuban government led by Fidel Castro to project itself as a leader of Third World internationalism after coming to power in January 1959. It begins by exploring revolutionary Cuba's first effort to convene and host a major international conference, a "Conference of Underdeveloped Nations" in Havana in 1960. Using a combination of the published Cuban press and several diplomatic archives – chiefly from the United States and United Kingdom, but also including a few Mexican and Venezuelan documents and the 47-page internal report of Cuban Ambassador Carlos Lechuga's tour of Latin America in January-February 1960, obtained from his family in Havana – the chapter analyzes the failure of Cuba's efforts to convene this conference, and the efforts of the Eisenhower administration to discourage Latin American governments from participating. At a time when Cuba's international orientation was very much in flux, the struggle over the conference became part of a larger contest over the future direction of the Revolution and over Latin American engagement with both the U.S. and the Third World.

Chapter 2 examines the formative period in Ian Hamilton Finlay’s career when he encountered the work of like-minded poets in the United States, including Niedecker. Chapter 2 argues that Finlay’s use of folk forms in his poetry during the late 1950s articulates a critical response to the orthodoxies of the ‘Scottish Renaissance’ at that time. Finlay counters what he perceived as the Renaissance’s cultural myopia and literary pretensions by developing a faux-naif folk poetry that consciously evoked the doggerel of the Scottish poet William McGonagall, as well as with an early twentieth-century Russian avant-garde. In doing so, this chapter argues, Finlay strategically situates his work in an international tradition of avant-garde innovation that subverts Renaissance nationalism.

Abstract:
A vast array of manufactured articles containing metal components utilize power press methods in their production. The common aspect of these methods is the use of specialized dies and the mechanical energy of the press machine to impart the required finished shape with a minimum of time and material loss. The innovation of power press metal forming methods in conjunction with advances in sheet rolling technology can be credited with a significant portion of the United States economic growth from manufacturing between 1890 and 1940. Of the many variations of power press metal forming processes that now exist, sheet stamping is found to be the most significant to the economic development of the U.S. as a synergetic partner of the new automobile industry. Data from the 1929 Census of Manufactures is used to generate a Social Savings metric which estimates the effect of the use of sheet stamping in terms productivity gained. The estimated Social Savings of this very small sector of manufacturing represents a tenth of one percent of the total Value Added by all U.S. industries in 1929.

Abstract:
The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) is an Islamic organisation legally established in 1972. From 1971 until now, ABIM is very concern to international issues, especially the Israeli-Palestinian issue. This article discusses the influence and impact of ABIM in fighting for the liberation of Palestine (1971-2020). ABIM has always called on those responsible for Palestinian independence and the freedom of its people from the grip of Israel. Although various peace negotiations have been held between Israel and Palestine internationally, concrete solutions have not been reached. The objective to be achieved is to analyze ABIM’s involvement in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The methodology used is primary source research in the National Archives of Malaysia and the ABIM Archive. Apart from that, an interview with the President of ABIM, Mr. Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz was also held. The results of the study found that ABIM is consistent and active in fighting for this issue. This proves that the voice of NGOs can influence and impact decisions at the national and international levels such as the United Nations (UN). The volume of voice that is always displayed by ABIM is able to give awareness to the leaders and the people of Malaysia that this issue is not just a religious issue but this issue is a universal issue involving humanitarian values. ABIM has held press conferences, sent memorandum, held demonstrations, peaceful rallies, boycotts of American-Israeli goods and set up a Palestinian Aid Fund to raise the issue. ABIM's official paper, 'Risalah' also played a role in disseminating current Palestinian issues by publishing articles from original sources on the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and developments in Palestine, especially in the 1970s. This is because resources at the time were very limited and Western media published biased and untrue news.

Abstract:
The United Nations Food and Agroindustry Organization (FAO) declared in 2018 the Malaga raisin pro-duction system as an Important World Agricultural Heritage System (SIPAM). There are 62 SIPAM world-wide, five of them in Spain and Malaga is the only one in the entire Andalusian autonomous community. The value of this declaration resides in the recognition of a cultural heritage capable of combining agri-cultural biodiversity with resilient ecosystems and a valuable cultural landscape where its architecture remains linked to artisan production. The SIPAM of Malaga has an area of 280 km², it ranges from the cultivation of the Moscatel grape to its transformation into raisins through drying in the sun, favoring the conservation of the landscape, avoiding erosion or desertification processes and constituting an element of linkage of the population with its territory.Since the 18th century, the production coexisted with other forms of elaboration that complemented it. Said structures associated with this industry were located on agricultural properties following various construc-tion models, ranging from rudimentary forms of sunlight such as the almijares in the paved ring of the press, to buildings of higher production. After the phylloxera crisis and the process of constant production decline, we would end up with the destruction of a large part of Malaga's payments. The wineries, paseros and warehouses were transformed into ruins or were reconverted to other lower-yield agricultural activi-ties.Of that material wealth we recognize scattered examples in the current rural landscape of the mountains of Malaga, whose architectural qualities deserve to be rescued and valued as an example of the unique and representative traditional architecture of a declared cultural landscape. These results are directly linked to the work strategies and objectives that we follow in the Transnational research project SIN-PAR (Inno-vation System for the Heritage of Rural Andalusia)

By integrating light and static electricity to form a passive electrostatic image on an image unit covered with a light conducting substance, the electrophotography principle is applied to digital printing and employ powder ink with a charge or toner on both the recording unit's image and non-image areas. Static electricity also causes the image to transfer to the printed material. The quality of the image that is conveyed and received depends on the electric charge energy. This study's objectives were to examine how the electric charge energy difference in a digital press image impacts the color value. By changing the electric charge's five levels to -10, -5, 0, +5, and +10, evaluate the color difference value, and selected each of electric charge energy value to improve color quality of digital printing.

Abstract:
In the earlier studies, it was shown that a whole multi stage former can be divided into three major sub-sections, the positioning unit, the gripping unit and the forming unit. The two first units were investigated and related parameters and features of each were discussed. This research herein deals with the forming unit. For this research, the positioning unit and the gripping unit are applied to the forming unit including a micro press equipped with a die system. The analysis focuses on verifying the results already extracted from previous researches by implementing all mentioned units together. A motion study of the system gives an overview of different steps and movements inside the multi stage former. Significantly, increasing the production rate increases the acceleration and also causes the time frame tight. The time limitations put overlaps on the moving parts in terms of milliseconds. A high speed camera was used in the experiments with high resolution to show the details of the motion while enabling to detect any unwanted movement within milliseconds. Importantly, increasing the frequency of image capturing within the movement is another beneficial feature in the high speed camera in order to give sufficient information on critical movements where they may need sensors and enough time to ensure getting at the right position as programmed. In this research the production rate raised to 169 strokes per minute. The results show that the concept introduced for the manipulator works very well at a real process implementation. This significantly approves the techniques already were given to evaluate the precisio in the positioning unit and the gripping unit.

Abstract:
A virtual prototype of the moving beam balancing system of a heavy-duty hydraulic press working under die forging function is built with Adams, AMESim and Simulink, and the balancing control process is analyzed using this prototype. The moving beam of the heavy-duty hydraulic press may tilt due to the eccentric load during the die forging processing, and thus affect the forging quality and the safety of the press. So it is necessary to research the beam balancing control process. Compared to the traditional methods based on simplified mathematical models, virtual prototype technology can obtain a co-simulation model, avoid tedious formula derivation and solving work, and save test time and cost. Based on the analysis of the working principle of balancing system, this paper establishes a dynamical model of the moving beam, a hydraulic circuit model of the single balancing system and a controller model using Adams, AMESim and Simulink, respectively. Then a virtual prototype is built using the three models via co-simulation interface files. The eccentric load signal is constructed in AMESim according to the variation of eccentric load during die forging process. By adjusting the controller parameters, the rapid balancing of the moving beam under eccentric load conditions is realized, and high precision of dynamic balancing and steady equilibrium is obtained. The simulation results show that the single balancing unit can achieve effective balancing of the moving beam, and the co-simulation analysis method based on the virtual prototype built with Adams, AMESim and Simulink is feasible in the research of the synchronous rectification of the moving beam. This work is a useful exploration in the research of synchronous rectification of moving beams.

Full text
Abstract:
Ongoing research has been done to develop control methods based on the simulated loading paths input to the press machinery. This forms an open loop system where the characteristics of the Press hydraulic unit involved delivering the forming agents, i.e. the axial cylinders and valves, are neglected. This process approach leads to most experiments being done by simplifications which is time consuming and expensive, curbs the ability to have feedback control and restricts development of complex machinery response algorithms. Cylinder force control and controller design models have been researched widely such as PID and H∞ but less is known about their application to Tube Hydroforming (THF) process control which is relatively new. This paper focuses on modeling the THF process and developing a Real time PID controller to operate with a prototype model. The position of the cylinder is tracked and compared with reference provided from a database via a dynamic data exchange link showing that control could be achieved with a prototype. Position control with above approach results in efficient and concerted control merging the loading path design flexibility with machinery dynamic response.

In ASME 2010 8th International Conference on Fuel Cell Science, Engineering and Technology. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/fuelcell2010-33231.

Abstract:
The most critical step in high temperature proton exchange membrane (PEM) MEA manufacturing is sealing of the membrane between the two electrodes. This sealing process is typically conducted using a precision hydraulic thermal press. In order to achieve cost-effective high-volume MEA manufacturing, it is important to reduce the variability in MEA performance due to variations in incoming material properties and dimensions, and to reduce the unit process cycle time. This paper explains the application of real time adaptive process controls (APC) combined with effective in-situ diagnostics during the MEA sealing process to achieve greater uniformity and performance of high temperature PEM MEAs. The in-situ impedance measurement is carried out in a precision thermal press using a milliohmmeter by reading the complex impedance of the MEA at 1 kHz as the components of the MEA are sealed. This signal is then used to adjust the pressing process parameters in real time to achieve more uniform MEA performance. An experiment was carried out in an attempt to identify the impedance parameter which correlated most closely with the MEA’s future performance. Using these impedance parameters during pressing, we are able to reliably produce MEAs using the real time APC technique that perform consistently in a single cell test fixture with more than a 50% reduction in pressing time.

Full text
Abstract:
The Zap-Lok connection system involves a bell, or expanded area, formed on one end of a joint of pipe, and a groove is formed on the opposite end. Both end-forming operations are accomplished with a hydraulic belling unit and a hydraulic groover, respectively, operated by hydraulic power units. These end preparations are automatically controlled to specifications required for the Zap-Lok joint. In the field, or on the right-of-way, the belled end of one length of pipe and grooved end of another are forced together by the Zap-Lok joining press, with a thin coating of epoxy serving as a lubricant. The Zap-Lok joint is made cold and formed from the pipe itself. This process takes about 10 seconds, and it is normal to average 90 seconds per connection, including driving to the next joint. In the drive to lower costs for oil and gas operators, Zap-Lok is seen as a way to reduce costs of pipeline construction by 25% to 30% on land and by 45% to 60% offshore. Over the past several years an extensive testing program has been undertaken by Zap-Lok to evaluate the performance of their system, especially in relatively shallow water applications. This paper provides details on specific phases of the research program and the insights that were gained in the evaluation effort.

In ASME 2010 International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2010-34054.

Full text
Abstract:
Curing and consolidating thermoset composite laminates and sandwich structures typically involves vacuum bagging an uncured and formed layup over a thin-walled mold, placing it in an autoclave, and subjecting the entire unit to temperature, vacuum and pressure cycles as prescribed by the manufacturer. Autoclaving is generally considered the major bottleneck in manufacturing of advanced composites parts because of high capital and consumable costs, energy usage, waste generated and process scalability. A new curing and consolidation process, called ‘thermal press curing’ is discussed and demonstrated as an alternative to autoclaving. The process involves compressing a composite laminate between a special mold set — heated metal mold and a matching rubber-covered mold made of an insulative material — designed to provide uniform temperature and pressure over the metal mold surface, that is, mimic the process conditions provided by an autoclave. The thermal press curing process is demonstrated for the first time using a mold set for a simple 2-dimensional axisymmetric shape. An aluminum curing mold with embedded electric resistance cartridge heaters is heuristically designed to provide uniform temperature in operation across the mold surface within 1°C of the target value (177°C). With the mold set compressing an eight-ply carbon/epoxy composite workpiece and well insulated on all sides, the power draw is at least 1–2 orders-of-magnitude less than a comparable autoclaving operation. The potential to significantly improve pressure uniformity from the compressed rubber mask is shown by changing the mask shape. Even without an optimized rubber layer shape and thickness, the eight-ply composite part was successfully cured. Finally, a plan for future work is described.

The Changing Shape of the World Automobile Industry: A Multilayer Network Analysis of International Trade in Components and Parts. Abstract:
In 2018, after 25 years of the North America Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the United States requested new rules which, among other requirements, increased the regional con-tent in the production of automotive components and parts traded between the three part-ner countries, United States, Canada and Mexico. Signed by all three countries, the new trade agreement, USMCA, is to go into force in 2022. Nonetheless, after the 2020 Presi-dential election, the new treaty's future is under discussion, and its impact on the automo-tive industry is not entirely defined. Another significant shift in this industry – the acceler-ated rise of electric vehicles – also occurred in 2020: while the COVID-19 pandemic largely halted most plants in the automotive value chain all over the world, at the reopen-ing, the tide is now running against internal combustion engine vehicles, at least in the an-nouncements and in some large investments planned in Europe, Asia and the US. The definition of the pre-pandemic situation is a very helpful starting point for the analysis of the possible repercussions of the technological and geo-political transition, which has been accelerated by the epidemic, on geographical clusters and sectorial special-isations of the main regions and countries. This paper analyses the trade networks emerg-ing in the past 25 years in a new analytical framework. In the economic literature on inter-national trade, the study of the automotive global value chains has been addressed by us-ing network analysis, focusing on the centrality of geographical regions and countries while largely overlooking the contribution of countries' bilateral trading in components and parts as structuring forces of the subnetwork of countries and their specific position in the overall trade network. The paper focuses on such subnetworks as meso-level structures emerging in trade network over the last 25 years. Using the Infomap multilayer clustering algorithm, we are able to identify clusters of countries and their specific trades in the automotive internation-al trade network and to highlight the relative importance of each cluster, the interconnec-tions between them, and the contribution of countries and of components and parts in the clusters. We draw the data from the UN Comtrade database of directed export and import flows of 30 automotive components and parts among 42 countries (accounting for 98% of world trade flows of those items). The paper highlights the changes that occurred over 25 years in the geography of the trade relations, with particular with regard to denser and more hierarchical network gener-ated by Germany’s trade relations within EU countries and by the US preferential trade agreements with Canada and Mexico, and the upsurge of China. With a similar overall va-riety of traded components and parts within the main clusters (dominated respectively by Germany, US and Japan-China), the Infomap multilayer analysis singles out which com-ponents and parts determined the relative positions of countries in the various clusters and the changes over time in the relative positions of countries and their specialisations in mul-tilateral trades. Connections between clusters increase over time, while the relative im-portance of the main clusters and of some individual countries change significantly. The focus on US and Mexico and on Germany and Central Eastern European countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) will drive the comparative analysis.
