Bederman, Jeanette M. "Beyond military service an analysis of United States Naval Academy graduates' civilian career experiences." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/2011.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the civilian career experiences of United States Naval Academy (USNA) graduates who have left military service. The data comes from a 2004 survey of USNA graduates from the classes of 1986 through 1996. This thesis analyzes the effect of human capital accumulated via the USNA education, via follow-on military experiences, and via career preparation on civilian salary and satisfaction. Both the first salary after leaving the military service and the current salary are analyzed. Both salary models find that varsity athletes, honors graduates, submariners, and those who achieved higher military ranks earn more than their classmates. Military tenure increases civilian salary, but the effect diminishes after a certain point. Selective Reservists consistently earn lower civilian salaries. The write-in responses reveal that leadership, academics, time management and other personal skills provide the most influential USNA experiences on current civilian jobs. While 84 percent describe themselves as satisfied, a satisfaction model is estimated to examine for trade-offs between salary and satisfaction. Satisfaction is further examined by evaluating the effect of civilian accomplishments. The estimates find that Marines, Naval Aviators, and Trident Scholars are more likely to be dissatisfied than satisfied. Military tenure yields a tradeoff between wages and satisfaction.

Fox, Jason P. "Selecting the brigade leadership at the United States Naval Academy: who are the stripers?" Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/9846.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the process of selecting the midshipmen leadership, or "stripers," at the United States Naval Academy. Using a qualitative approach, it gathers data from the current cohort of decision makers who select the stripers each semester regarding what they believe to be the desirable and undesirable qualities of striper candidates. Shifting to a quantitative approach, those qualities are then used to create variables using data from the Naval Academy classes of 1999 through 2002. A logistic regression is then estimated with the purpose of gauging if those qualities are, in fact, represented in the selectees. A model is presented which indicates that, by and large, the goals of the selection process are being met. Recommendations for minor policy adjustments and for further research are made based on the findings of both the qualitative and quantitative data.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the leadership opportunities available to midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy, from the perspective of the midshipmen. The purpose was to identify which leadership opportunities, experiences and influences are viewed as highly beneficial to their development as leaders. The research was primarily qualitative in nature, using focus groups with 12 cohorts of midshipmen. Additionally, a quantitative analysis was conducted to compare and contrast the results. The results of this study indicate that the midshipmen primarily learn leadership from other midshipmen, role models, formal leadership positions they fulfill (specifically small unit leadership positions), gender relations and the classroom environment. This thesis presents recommendations to highlight and expand additional leadership positions, experiences or opportunities for midshipmen leadership development. Recommendations for improvements in leadership instruction are also provided

Abstract:
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited
This study examines fleet retention rates of USNA graduates who participated in varsity athlete programs from 1988 to 1990 and retained beyond their initial service obligation (N = 2,735). It is based on a theoretical model which investigates two forces of influence on retention: varsity athlete status as a positive influence and recruit status as a negative influence. Results of the hierarchical logistic regression analyses validate the theoretical model and suggest that varsity athletic participation and recruit status do have an impact on fleet retention rates. The negative retention influence of recruit status and the positive retention influence of varsity athletic participation are observed through the interaction of these two forces. Results indicate that recruit status is significantly related to lower retention rates, however, this negative force is counterbalanced by the positive influence of sustained varsity athletic participation, should the athlete have the perseverance to letter in his or her sport. This study also identifies the walk-on varsity athlete as the true beneficiary of the human capital benefits associated with varsity athletic participation. The walk-on varsity athlete acquires leadership and teamwork skills attributed to participation in varsity athletics without the negative recruit influence.
Lieutenant, United States Naval Reserve

Abstract:
This study employed quantitative and qualitative methods to examine gender trends and the quality of gender interactions at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). In addition to gender, midshipmen demographics, experiences, personality types, interests, and graduation outcomes were compared within and across gender for graduation years, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2004. Representation of women has increased to the current high of around 16%. Further, the data revealed similarities and differences between men and women in terms of their non-gender characteristics. Women's SAT scores and Cumulative Quality Point Ratios (QPRs) are on par with the men's. Proportionally, women are more likely to be extroverts and varsity athletes than are men. Women are less likely to be technical majors. Women are being afforded leadership experiences to the same extent as men. Perceptions regarding gender relations and cohesion were assessed through focus groups conducted with 110 midshipmen. Although gender representation has increased, and the Administration is credited with improving the explicit climate, there does not yet exist a completely gender-neutral or women "friendly" climate. The preponderance of findings regarding gender interactions at the Naval Academy suggests that male midshipmen have yet to fully accept female midshipmen. The Naval Academy must continue to confront the subsurface issues and dynamics persisting amongst male and female midshipmen. Recommendations include making an institutional commitment to improving gender interactions and company cohesion, securing alumni cooperation, and involving midshipmen in improving the gender climate.
