Abstract:
To estimate the fatigue life of long-span steel bridge more accurately, this paper proposes a method for estimating the fatigue life of long-span bridges by considering vehicle-bridge coupled vibration. Firstly, the universal equation of vehicle-bridge vibration is derived based on triaxial standard multi-scale model of fatigue vehicle and bridge, and relevant program for vehicle-bridge coupled vibration is programmed. Secondly, a method for estimating the fatigue life of long-span steel bridge is proposed based on fracture mechanics theories, and the analysis process is expounded in details.

Abstract Bridges are a critical element of the transport network. In case of neglected maintenance, war conflict or natural disaster, they may be damaged or destroyed. An alternative solution in the form of a detour is mostly feasible only in the case of ground communication. But even in this case, it can be a very difficult and lengthy solution. Therefore, temporary bridges are often used to replace the permanent bridge structure for a certain time. The history of temporary bridges is essentially as old as that of permanent bridges. The first patented temporary bridge was the Eifel Bridge, wh

In cable-stayed bridges, especially asymmetric bridges, counterweights are always made to work together with cable pretension forces to get a reasonable finished state. To solve the optimization problem of the cable-stayed bridge considering the counterweights, the integrated optimization method (IOM) for estimating cable forces and counterweights is proposed. In this method, the counterweights are proposed to act on the anchor points. After that, the summary of the minimum weighted total bending energy and the summary of the counterweights are considered as two objective functions of a multio

Abstract Stress-strain cycles in filler loaded rubbers can be described with the aid of the van der Waals-network model. Reinforcement comes about by drawing pairs of filler particles apart. Reinforcement is observed because the intrinsic strain within the rubber bridge which is located between the filler particles exceeds the macroscopic strain very much, so much that interfacial slippage is enforced. The rubbery intra-cluster bridge distribution is represented by three dominant filler particle distances. One of them describes direct filler-to-filler (FF-) contacts, the critical strength of w

The first part reviews the fundamental notion of classifying topos of a geometric theory and discusses the appropriate kinds of interpretations between theories which induce morphisms between the associated classifying toposes; the theoretical presentation is accompanied by a few concrete examples of classifying toposes of theories naturally arising in mathematics. A characterization theorem for universal models of geometric theories inside classifying toposes is also established. The second part presents the general unifying technique ‘toposes as bridges’.

Abstract Arc-sprayed zinc coatings are being used as anodes in active cathodic protection systems for steel reinforced concrete bridges of historical and economic significance on the Oregon coast. Research was recently begun to determine the service life of the zinc coatings, the effect of operating and environmental variables on coating bond strength, and the corrosion performance of metals typically found in service equipment for cathodic protection systems and other utilities. Mass loss measurements are in progress at seven bridges and eight coastal areas to determine the effects of microcl

Abstract Cathodic Protection is a corrosion mitigation practice that is used to insure the mechanical integrity of critical steel structures such as pipelines, storage tanks, ship’s hulls, bridges, etc. Sufficient cathodic protection current prevents galvanic corrosion between steel and an electrolytic environment but determining the adequacy of the level of cathodic protection at the steel-to-electrolyte interface directly is difficult. As such, NACE International (NACE) and several other industry associations have developed standard practices that detail consensus criteria to determine indir

Abstract Since the Florida Keys incident in 1986, effectiveness of epoxy coated reinforcing steel (ECR) has been questioned among corrosion professionals and transportation officials. One of the key controversies is whether ECR can be effective corrosion resistant under the disbonded coating condition. A school of experts claim that as soon as the epoxy coating disbonds, the ECR no longer provides adequate corrosion protection. According to others, however, excellent field performance records for nearly 30 years and several significant laboratory studies proved that, despite universally accept

Abstract Flow accelerated corrosion under turbulent flow is a complex process with enhanced mass transport, development of concentration gradients and film formation all influencing the corrosion rate. Published data from well established hydrodynamic correlations of mass transfer and flow, and shear stress and flow, are first compared to illustrate the relative magnitudes of the various parameters for different flow geometries. The results of these empirical studies are also compared with the universal velocity profile concept. The analysis shows that any lack of correspondence between corros

In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), according to 2015 figures from the Joint Monitoring Program, over 100 million people do not have access to adequate sanitation services, and nearly 34 million do not have access to safely managed drinking water. A disproportionate number of these households are from lower-income market segments and wealth quintiles, primarily residing in the rapidly growing, high-density periphery of established urban centers, small towns, and rural areas. Access to water and sanitation has been declared by the United Nations to be a human right, indicating that there

Currently, there are no universally accepted procedures or criteria related to the inspection of pedestrian bridges in the U.S. While some states have some criteria in place, the FHWA has no specific recommendations or requirements for such structures. However, pedestrian bridges can be very complex structures in some cases, whether by using non-redundant cable-supported walkways, curved super structures, or other materials not commonly used in highway bridges. Furthermore, many of these bridges are over busy state highways and carry many pedestrians daily. Due to the Indiana climate, these st

Targeting social assistance in situations of protracted conflict, displacement or recurrent climate shocks so that it reaches those most in need in a timely and effective manner, and without doing further harm, is a complex technical and political challenge for development and humanitarian actors across government and non-government sectors. Trade-offs involving costs beyond the economic – such as risk of exclusion, and concerns over protection and social cohesion – raise key questions about who to target, how to target or whether to target at all (i.e. through universal coverage or lotteries)

Not opening scientific data is costly. It has been estimated that a significant share of scientific knowledge disappears every year. In a 2014 study less than half of biological datasets from the 1990s have been recovered and when possible the recovery has necessitated significant time and efforts. In comparison, 98% of datasets published on PLOS with unique identifiers (data DOIs) are still available for future research.
